Resuspension: decadal monitoring time series of the anthropogenic radioactivity deposition in Japan

Monthly atmospheric depositions of (90)Sr and (137)Cs have been observed at the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI), Tsukuba, Japan. This study reports temporal trends and levels of (90)Sr and (137)Cs depositions in the 1990s. Although the current (90)Sr and (137)Cs concentrations declined dramatically, they have been found continuously in the deposition samples throughout the 1990s. During this period, the annual (90)Sr ((137)Cs) deposits at MRI ranged from 70-180 (140-350) mBq/m(2)/year. With a sufficiently long time series, the decreasing trend of the deposition evidently differs from the past stratospheric fallout; it is far slower. Thus, reservoirs other than the stratosphere provide small amounts of (90)Sr and (137)Cs to the atmosphere. A simple calculation clearly refutes the significance of the ocean as a potential source of airborne anthropogenic radioactivity. We will demonstrate that these radionuclides in the deposited materials originate from resuspension processes (soil dust suspension processes). The temporal trends of the time series monitoring reveal differences from those in the UNSCEAR Report 2000, which were predicted by a model that disregarded resuspension. The specific activity of (90)Sr ((137)Cs) in the annual depositions exhibited a 10-year (20-year) half-life. Those data were comparable with values reported in the literature for the half-residence time (HRT) of (90)Sr and (137)Cs in Japanese surface soils. They were also comparable to those calculated from nationwide data of (90)Sr and (137)Cs concentrations in the surface soil (0-10 cm) obtained from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Environmental Radiation Database (the MEXT Database). Regarding the activity ratio of (137)Cs/(90)Sr, the Japanese nationwide surface soil data collected during the 1990s in the MEXT Database (median: 5.3, n = 584) did not accord with that in the deposition samples (average: 2.1, n = 82) at MRI. This supports our previous hypothesis that Asian dust may transport a large fraction of anthropogenic radioactivity into the Japanese atmosphere. We need to study the fate of long-lived anthropogenic radioactivity dispersed in the environment over greater spatial and temporal scales.

Cation-cation interactions in neptunyl(V) compounds: hydrothermal preparation and structural characterization of NpO2(IO3) and alpha- and beta-AgNpO2(SeO3)

The hydrothermal reaction of NpO(2) with IO(3)(-) in the presence of nitrate results in the formation of NpO(2)(IO(3)) (1). Under similar conditions, NpO(2) reacts with AgNO(3) and SeO(2) to yield alpha-AgNpO(2)(SeO(3)) (2) and beta-AgNpO(2)(SeO(3)) (3). The structure of 1 consists of distorted pentagonal bipyramidal Np(V) centers that are bridged by iodate anions. In addition, the oxo atoms of the neptunyl(V) cations coordinate adjacent Np(V) centers creating layers that are linked into a three-dimensional network structure by the iodate anions. The structure is polar owing to the alignment of the stereochemically active lone pair of electrons on the iodate anions along the c-axis. alpha-AgNpO(2)(SeO(3)) (2) forms a layered structure consisting of hexagonal bipyramidal NpO(8) polyhedra that are bound by chelating and bridging selenite anions. The primary and secondary structures of 3 are similar to those of 1, and neptunyl-neptunyl interactions are partially responsible for the creation of a three-dimensional network structure. However, the selenite anions in 3 are rotated with respect to the iodate anions found in 1, and the structure is centrosymmetric. The network found in 3 consists of interconnecting, approximately square channels that house the Ag(+) cations. A bond-valance sum parameter of 2.036 A for Np(V) bound exclusively to oxygen has been developed with b = 0.37 A. Kinetic and steady-state investigations of solute accumulation in bacterial membranes by continuously monitoring the radioactivity in the effluent of flow-dialysis experiments

The flow-dialysis technique for studies of solute accumulation by membrane preparations has been made more suitable for routine measurements by recording continuously the radioactivity in the effluent of a flow-dialysis vessel with a homogeneous flow-monitoring device for beta-emitters. This modification not only decreases the time and cost of a flow-dialysis experiment but also allows the investigator to react directly on the outcome of his experiments. Analysis of the kinetics of this automated flow-dialysis system shows that this technique can also be used for the determination of the rate of uptake of solutes into bacterial membranes. This has been confirmed in Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides by comparing the results of Rb+ and inorganic phosphate uptake studies performed by automated flow-dialysis and by the conventional filtration procedure. This application has the limitation that solute uptake has to proceed linearly for a period of about five times the half-time of the response of the flow-dialysis system. The two described applications make automated flow-dialysis very well-suited for experiments on the bioenergetics and regulation of solute uptake into bacterial membranes. Both driving force and rate of solute uptake can now be determined in one experiment.
