Abstract
Surface dilational moduli of polymer monolayers, blended polymer monolayers, and polymer particle monolayers spread at air-water interfaces are reviewed, focusing on measurements using surface pressure isotherm, surface pressure relaxation, and oscillating barrier methods. Differences between the surface dilational moduli of condensed polymer monolayers and expanded polymer monolayers are explored. Moreover, the features of the surface dilational moduli in blended polymer monolayers are discussed in terms of their miscibility.

Abstract
A combination of anionic and RAFT polymerization was used to synthesize an ABC triblock polymer poly[(propylenesulfide)-block-(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-block-(N-isopropylacrylamide)] (PPS-b-PDMA-b-PNIPAAM) that forms physically cross-linked hydrogels when transitioned from ambient to physiologic temperature and that incorporates mechanisms for reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggered degradation and drug release. At ambient temperature (25 °C), PPS-b-PDMA-b-PNIPAAM assembled into 66 ± 32 nm micelles comprising a hydrophobic PPS core and PNIPAAM on the outer corona. Upon heating to physiologic temperature (37 °C), which exceeds the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAM, micelle solutions (at ≥2.5 wt %) sharply transitioned into stable, hydrated gels. Temperature-dependent rheology indicated that the equilibrium storage moduli (G') of hydrogels at 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 wt % were 20, 380, and 850 Pa, respectively. The PPS-b-PDMA-b-PNIPAAM micelles were preloaded with the model drug Nile red, and the resulting hydrogels demonstrated ROS-dependent drug release. Likewise, exposure to the peroxynitrite generator SIN-1 degraded the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The hydrogels were cytocompatible in vitro and were demonstrated to have utility for cell encapsulation and delivery. These hydrogels also possessed inherent cell-protective properties and reduced ROS-mediated cellular death in vitro. Subcutaneously injected PPS-b-PDMA-b-PNIPAAM polymer solutions formed stable hydrogels that sustained local release of the model drug Nile red for 14 days in vivo. These collective data demonstrate the potential use of PPS-b-PDMA-b-PNIPAAM as an injectable, cyto-protective hydrogel that overcomes conventional PNIPAAM hydrogel limitations such as syneresis, lack of degradability, and lack of inherent drug loading and environmentally responsive release mechanisms.

Abstract
Polymers that respond to small changes in environmental stimuli with large, sometimes discontinuous changes in their physical state or properties, are often called "smart" polymers. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAAm, is one of the most representative smart polymer that exhibits a thermally reversible soluble-insoluble change in the vicinity of its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at 32°C in aqueous solution. Temperature-responsive chromatography for the separation of biomolecules utilizing the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-modified stationary phase is performed with an aqueous mobile phase without using an organic solvent. The surface properties and function of the stationary phase are controlled by external temperature changes without changing the mobile-phase composition. The separation of the biomolecules, such as nucleotides, was achieved by a dual temperature- and pH-responsive chromatography system. The electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions could be modulated simultaneously with the temperature in an aqueous mobile phase. Additionally, we also prepared functional copolymers composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and amino acid derivative or naphthyl alanine derivative, which have temperature-responsiveness and molecular recognition. These separation systems would have potential applications in the separation of biomolecules.

Abstract
In this submission, two independent sets of microgels were synthesized that exhibit pH responsivity over different solution pH ranges. The microgels were synthesized by copolymerizing two different comonomers with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm). The microgels copolymerized with acrylic acid exhibit a negative charge above pH 4.25, while the microgels copolymerized with N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide exhibit a positive charge below pH 8.4; these microgels are neutral outside of these pH ranges. We show that aggregates form when the two independent sets of microgels are exposed to one another in a solution that renders them both charged. Furthermore, in solutions of pH outside of this range, the microgels disaggregate because one of the microgels becomes neutralized. This behavior was exploited to load (aggregation) and release (disaggregation) a small-molecule model drug, methylene blue. This aggregate-based system is one example of how pNIPAm-based microgels can be used for controlled/triggered drug delivery, which can have implications for therapeutics.

Abstract
The effect of temperature on the micellar morphology of two polystyrene-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) diblock copolymers in an aqueous solution was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At 25 °C, a mixture of vesicles and spheres are observed for the micelles of PS65-b-PNIPAM108, while PS65-b-PNIPAM360 exhibits mixed cylindrical and spherical micellar morphology. Upon increasing the temperature, the micellar morphology becomes spherical for PS65-b-PNIPAM108 at 60 °C and for PS65-b-PNIPAM360 at 40 °C. Such vesicle-to-sphere and cylinder-to-sphere transitions of micellar morphology are reversible when the micellar solutions are cooled back to 25 °C. However, these temperature-induced morphological transitions of the PS-b-PNIPAM micelles are contrary to the theoretical prediction. Qualitative analysis of the free energy shows that vesicular or cylindrical micelles tend to form at higher temperatures if only the overall volume change of the PNIPAM block is considered. The contradiction between the experimental results and theoretical prediction is interpreted in terms of the local deformability of the PNIPAM chains. At elevated temperatures, the collapsed PNIPAM globules are less deformable and must occupy larger areas at the micellar interface, although the overall volume is smaller at higher temperatures. This will lead to a larger repulsion between the PNIPAM globules and a remarkable increase in the free energy of the corona; thus, the formation of vesicles or cylinders at higher temperatures is prohibited.

Abstract
The effect of urea on the phase transition of PNIPAM was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For a certain urea concentration, the enthalpy change of phase transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) aqueous solution increases with the number of DSC cycles, presumably due to the displacement of water molecules bound to the amide groups of PNIPAM by urea molecules at the temperature higher than the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM and causes the decrease in the absolute value of the exothermic heat related to the dehydration of hydrophilic groups and interactions of hydrophilic residues to around 0. Moreover, the enthalpy change decreases with the urea concentration during the heating process of the first DSC cycle, indicating the replacement of water molecules around the apolar isopropyl groups by urea molecules at the temperature lower than LCST, and the endothermic heat caused by the dehydration of apolar groups decreases. Furthermore, the urea molecules which replace the water molecules at high temperature can be replaced again by water molecules at the temperature lower than LCST, but this process needs several days to complete.

Abstract
We have studied the micelle formation and phase behavior of a series of temperature- and pH-responsive surfactants prepared by controlled radical (RAFT) polymerization. These C12NIPAMm surfactants consist of a dodecyl tail, a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAM) headgroup with average degrees of polymerization of between 7 and 96, and an ionizable carboxylate group. In the un-ionized state, these surfactants phase separate on warming toward a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which decreases as the length of the NIPAM group is decreased. This is in agreement with the behavior of conventional nonionic poly(ethylene oxide)-based surfactants but is very different from that of polyNIPAM oligomer solutions. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) shows that these surfactants self-assemble into micelles consisting of a nearly spherical hydrophobic core surrounded by a "hairy" polyNIPAM shell far below their LCST. Upon warming, the micelles undergo a sphere-to-rod transition induced by the collapse of the polyNIPAM shell, causing a reduction in the headgroup area. In the un-ionized state the demixing follows at the LCST, but a single charge on the free polymer end completely suppresses phase separation, allowing micelles to undergo a shape change but remain dissolved.

Abstract
We use density functional theory to study the influence of fluid adsorption on the structure of grafted chain layer. The chains are modeled as freely jointed spheres. The chain segments and spherical molecules of the fluid interact via the Lennard-Jones potential. The fluid molecules are attracted by the substrate. We calculate the excess adsorption isotherms, the average height of tethered chains, and the force acting on selected segments of the chains. The parameters that were varied include the length of grafted chains, the grafting density, the parameters characterizing fluid-chain and fluid-surface interactions, the bulk fluid density, and temperature. We show that depending on the density of the bulk fluid the height of the bonded layer increases, remains constant, or decreases with increasing temperature.

Abstract
Smart supramolecular nanoenzymes with temperature-driven switching property have been successfully constructed by the self-assembly of supra-amphiphiles formed by the cyclodextrin-based host-guest chemistry. The self-assembled nanostructures were catalyst-functionalized and thermosensitively-functionalized through conveniently linking the catalytic center of glutathione peroxidase and thermosensitive polymer to the host cyclodextrin molecules. The ON-OFF switches for the peroxidase activity by reversible transformation of nanostructures from tube to sphere have been achieved through changing the temperature. We anticipate that such intelligent enzyme mimics could be developed to use in an antioxidant medicine with controlled catalytic efficiency according to the needs of the human body in the future.

Abstract
Chitin can be dissolved and homogeneously functionalized in NaOH/urea aqueous solvent. Previously, we reported that chitin modified with acrylamide (AMC) possesses high water solubility and can undergo a sol-gel transition responding to pH and cationic ions. In this report, we further explored the thermosensitive behavior of this multiple responsive chitin. We showed that the sol-gel transition temperature of AMC can be facilely adjusted by the degree of substitution (DS), pH, polymer concentration and the presence of anions or cations. Importantly, AMC can form a hydrogel at 37 °C and return to solution at 4 °C by adjusting experimental parameters. We anticipate this multiple responsive chitin may have potential applications in injectable materials and smart drug delivery.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with finite element calculations are used to explore the conformational dynamics of a thermo-sensitive oligomer, namely poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), subjected to an ultra-fast heating-cooling cycle. Finite element (FE) calculations were used to predict the temperature profile resulting from laser-induced heating of the polymer-aqueous system. The heating rate (∼0.6 K ps(-1)) deduced from FE calculations was used to heat an aqueous solution of PNIPAM consisting of 30 monomeric units (30-mer) from 285 K to 315 K. Non-equilibrium effects arising from the ultra-fast heating-cooling cycle results in a hysteresis during the coil-to-globule transition. The corresponding atomic scale conformations were characterized by monitoring the changes in the vibrational spectra, which provided a reliable metric to study the coil-to-globule transition in PNIPAM and vice-versa across the LCST. The vibrational spectra of bonds involving atoms from the oligomer backbone and the various side-groups (amide I, amide II, and the isopropyl group of PNIPAM) of the oligomers were analyzed to study the conformational changes in the oligomer corresponding to the observed hysteresis. The differences in the vibrational spectra calculated at various temperatures during heating and cooling cycles were used to understand the coil-to-globule and globule-to-coil transitions in the PNIPAM oligomer and identify the changes in the relative interactions between various atoms in the backbone and in the side groups of the oligomer with water. The shifts in the computed vibrational spectral peaks and the changes in the intensity of peaks for the different regions of PNIPAM, seen across the LCST during the heating cycle, are in good agreement with previous experimental studies. The changes in the radius of gyration (Rg) and vibrational spectra for amide I and amide II regions of PNIPAM suggest a clear coil-to-globule transition at ∼301 K during the heating cycle from 285 K to 315 K. During the heating cycle, a comparison of the vibrational spectra of isopropyl groups in PNIPAM at 285 K and 315 K suggests dehydration of the isopropyl moieties at 315 K. This implies that the oligomer-water interactions are dominant below the LCST whereas oligomer-oligomer interactions pre-dominate above the LCST. On the other hand, during the cooling cycle minor changes in the Rg and vibrational spectra of the PNIPAM oligomer in going from 315 K to 285 K indicate that the interactions between oligomer-oligomer and between the oligomer and water are less perturbed during the cooling cycle. Our simulations suggest that the observed hysteresis is a consequence of ultrafast heating-cooling kinetics, which allows insufficient relaxation times for the solvated oligomer.

Abstract
The enthalpically favoured hydration of hydrophobic entities, termed hydrophobic hydration, impacts the phase behaviour of numerous amphiphiles in water. Here, we show experimental evidence that hydrophobic hydration is strongly determined by the mean energetics of the aqueous medium. We investigate the aggregation and collapse of an amphiphilic polymer, poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNiPAM), in aqueous solutions containing small amounts of alcohol and find that the thermodynamic characteristics defining the phase transitions of PNiPAM evolve relative to the solvent composition at which the excess mixing enthalpy of the water/alcohol mixtures becomes minimal. Such correlation between solvent energetics and solution thermodynamics extends to other mixtures containing neutral organic solutes that are considered as kosmotropes to induce a strengthening of the hydrogen bonded water network. This denotes the energetics of water as a key parameter controlling the phase behaviour of PNiPAM and identifies the excess mixing enthalpy of water/kosmotrope mixtures as a gauge of the kosmotropic effect on hydrophobic assemblies.

Abstract
Zwitterionic polymers are generally viewed as a new class of nonfouling materials. Unlike their poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) counterparts, zwitterionic polymers have a broader chemical diversity and greater freedom for molecular design. In this Minireview, we highlight recent microbiological applications of zwitterionic polymers and their derivatives, with an emphasis on several unique molecular strategies to integrate antimicrobial and nonfouling properties. We will also discuss our insights into the bacterial nonfouling performance of zwitterionic polymers and one example of engineering zwitterionic polymer derivatives for antimicrobial wound-dressing applications.

Abstract
The introduction of stimuli-responsive polymers into the study of organic catalysis leads to the generation of a new kind of polymer-based stimuli-responsive recyclable catalytic system. Owing to their reversible switching properties in response to external stimuli, these systems are capable of improving the mass transports of reactants/products in aqueous solution, modulating the chemical reaction rates, and switching the catalytic process on and off. Furthermore, their stimuli-responsive properties facilitate the separation and recovery of the active catalysts from the reaction mixtures. As a fascinating approach of the controllable catalysis, these stimuli-responsive catalytic systems including thermoresponsive, pH-responsive, chemo-mechano-chemical, ionic strength-responsive, and dual-responsive, are reviewed in terms of their nanoreactors and mechanisms.
