Abstract
The first four generations of cobaltocenium-functionalized, diaminobutane-based poly(propylene imine) dendrimers DAB-dend-Cb,(PFb)x (x = 4, 8, 16, and 32; Cb=[Co(eta5-C5H4CONH)(eta5-C5H5)] (1-4) have been synthesized and characterized. The redox activity of the cobaltocenium centers in 1-4 has been characterized by using cyclic voltammetry and the electrochemical quartz-crystal microbalance (EQCM). All of the dendrimers exhibit reversible redox chemistry associated with the cobaltocenium/cobaltocene redox couple. Upon reduction. the dendrimers exhibit a tendency to electrodeposit onto the electrode surface, which is more pronounced for the higher generations. Pt and glassy carbon electrodes could be modified with films derived from 1-4,exhibiting a well-defined and persistent electrochemical response. EQCM measurements show that the dendrimers adsorb, at open circuit, onto platinum surfaces at monolayer or submonolayer coverage. Cathodic potential scanning past -0.75 V at which the cobaltocenium sites are reduced, gave rise to the electrodeposition of multilayer equivalents of the dendrimers. The additional material gradually desorbs upon re-oxidation so that only a monolayer equivalent remains on the electrode surface. Changes in film morphology as a function of dendrimer generation and surface coverage were studied by using admittance measurements of the quartz-crystal resonator on the basis of its electrical equivalent circuit, especially in terms of its resistance parameter. In general, we find that films of the lower dendrimer generation 1 behave rigidly, whereas those of the higher generation 4 exhibit viscoelastic behavior with an intermediate behavior being exhibited by 2 and 3. Using tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). we have been able to obtain molecularly resolved images of dendrimer 4 adsorbed on a Pt(111) electrode.

Abstract
The convergence of our understanding of structure-property relationships for selected biological macromolecules and our increased ability to prepare large synthetic macromolecules with a structural precision that approaches that of proteins have spawned a new area of research where chemistry and materials science join with biology. While evolution has enabled nature to perfect processes involving energy transfer or catalysis by incorporating functions such as self-replication and repair, synthetic macromolecules still depend on our synthetic skills and abilities to mesh structure and function in our designs. Clearly, we can take advantage of our understanding of natural systems to mimic the structural features that lead to optimized function. For example, numerous biological systems make use of the concept of site isolation whereby an active center or catalytic site is encapsulated, frequently within a protein, to afford properties that would not be encountered in the bulk state. The ability of the dendritic shell to encapsulate functional core moieties and to create specific site-isolated nanoenvironments, and thereby affect molecular properties, has been explored. By utilizing the distinct properties of the dendrimer architecture active sites that have either photophysical, photochemical, electrochemical, or catalytic functions have been placed at the core. Applying the general concept of site isolation to problems in materials research is likely to prove extremely fruitful in the long term, with short-term applications in areas such as the construction of improved optoelectronic devices. This review focuses on the evolution of a natural design principle that contributes to bridging the gap between biology and materials science. The recent progress in the synthesis of dendrimer-encapsulated molecules and their study by a variety of techniques is discussed. These investigations have implications that range from the preliminary design of artificial enzymes, catalysts, or light-harvesting systems to the construction of insulated molecular wires, light-emitting diodes, and fiber optics.

Abstract
The convergent synthesis of a series of polycationic aryl ether dendrimers has been accomplished by a convenient procedure involving quantitative quaternarization of aryl(poly)amine core molecules. The series has been expanded to the preparation of the first polycationic, mixed core-shell dendrimer. All these dendrimers consist of an apolar core with a peripheral ionic layer which is surrounded by a less polar layer of dendritic wedges. These cationic, macromolecular species have been investigated for their ability to form assemblies with (anionic) guest molecules. The results obtained from UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopies, and MALDI-TOF-MS demonstrate that all the cationic sites throughout the dendrimer core are involved in ion pair formation with anionic guests giving predefined guest/host ratios up to 24. The large NMR spectroscopic shifts of resonances correlated with the groupings located in the core of the dendrimers, together with the relaxation time data indicate that the anionic guests are associated with the cationic core of these dendrimers. The X-ray molecular structure of the octacationic, tetra-arylsilane model derivative [Si(C6H3[CH2NMe3](2)-3,5)4]8+. 8I- shows that the iodide counterions are primarily located near the polycationic sphere. The new polycationic dendrimers have been investigated for their catalytic phase-transfer behavior and substrate delivery over a nanofiltration membrane.

Abstract
Neutral phosphorus-containing dendrimers with aldehyde groups at the periphery have been analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) up to generation four. Although the expected quasi-molecular ion is generally observed, the mass spectral pattern, presence of fragments and adducts related to the original skeleton, is highly relevant to the sample preparation (nature of the matrix: 2-5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2.5-DHB), 1,8-dihydroxy-9[10H]-anthracenone (dithranol), 6-azathiothymine, 2,4,6-trihydroxyacetophenon, 7-hydroxycoumarin or 2-anthramine, and addition of alkali metal salts). The dithranol matrix with addition of LiI offers milder conditions; however, abundant fragments are still observed for the higher generation dendrimers. Investigation of these effects in connection with SEC, NMR, and MALDI-TOFMS studies of UV preirradiated dendrimers allows the assumption to be made that fragmentation occurs in MALDI due to the relatively strong absorption of the dendrimers at 337 nm. Fragmentations and formation of adducts involve nitrogen-nitrogen bond cleavage, imine metathesis, and reaction of aldehyde groups with internal imino groups.

Synthesis of periphery-functionalized dendritic molecules using polylithiated dendrimers as starting material. Org Lett 2000; 2:1621-4. Abstract
A general method for the functionalization of Si-Cl terminated carbosilane dendritic molecules via organolithium or organomagnesium reagents is described. Quantitative exchange of the bromine atoms of 4-bromophenyl-functionalized dendrimers affords polylithiated species that are valuable starting materials for further functionalization, e.g., into pyridyl alcohols. The latter were successfully applied as catalyst precursors in a ruthenium-mediated ring-closure metathesis reaction.
