Abstract
In this work we report on the synthesis and self-assembly of a thermo-sensitive block copolymer system of n-octadecyl-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), abbreviated as C18-PEGn-b-PNIPAAMm. We present a facile synthetic strategy for obtaining highly tunable thermo-responsive block copolymers starting from commercial PEG-based surfactants (Brij®) or a C18 precursor and conjugating with PNIPAAM via an Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) protocol. The self-assembly and detailed nanostructure were thoroughly investigated in aqueous solutions using both small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) combined with turbidity measurements. The results show that the system forms rather well defined classical micellar structures at room temperature that first undergo a collapse, followed by inter-micellar aggregation upon increasing the temperature. For the pure C18-PNIPAAM system, however, rather ill-defined micelles were formed, demonstrating the important role of PEG in regulating the nanostructure and the stability. It is found that the PEG content can be used as a convenient parameter to regulate the thermoresponse, i.e., the onset of collapse and aggregation. A detailed theoretical modeling analysis of the SAXS/SANS data shows that the system forms typical core-shell micellar structures. Interestingly, no evidence of back folding, where PEG allows PNIPAAM to form part of the C18 core, can be found upon crossing the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). This might be attributed to the entropic penalty of folding a polymer chain and/or enthalpic incompatibility between the blocks. The results show that by appropriately varying the balance between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic content, i.e. the amphiphilicity, tunable thermoresponsive micellar structures can be effectively designed. By means of SAXS/SANS we are able to follow the response on the nanoscale. These results thus give considerable insight into thermo-responsive micellar systems and provide guidelines as to how these systems can be tailor-made and designed. This is expected to be of considerable interest for potential applications such as in nanomedicine where an accurate and tunable thermoresponse is required.

Abstract
We report noncovalent dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in organic liquids with extremely high loading (∼2 mg mL(-1)) using polyvinylferrocene (PVF). In contrast to common dispersants, PVF does not contain any conjugated structures or ionic moieties. PVF is also shown to be effective in controlling nanotube dispersion and reprecipitation because it exhibits redox-switchable affinity for solvents, while maintaining stable physical attachment to CNTs during redox transformation. This switchability provides a novel approach to creating CNT-functionalized surfaces. The material systems described here offer new opportunities for applications of CNTs in nonaqueous media, such as nanotube-polymer composites and organic liquid-based optical limiters, and expand the means of tailoring nanotube dispersion behavior via external stimuli, with potential applications in switching devices. The PVF/CNT hybrid system with enhanced redox response of ferrocene may also find applications in high-performance biosensors and pseudocapacitors.

Abstract
Porous biphasic calcium phosphates (BCP) were fabricated using reverse thermo-responsive hydrogels with hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium (β-TCP) powder and planetary centrifugal mixer. This hydrogel mixture slurry will shrink and compress the HAp powder during the sintering process. The porous bioceramics are expected to have good mechanical properties after sintering at 1200°C. Reverse thermo-responsive hydrogels of poly[(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(methacrylic acid)] p(NiPAAm-MAA) were synthesized by free-radical cross-linking copolymerization, and their chemical properties were evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the hydrogel was determined using turbidity measurements. A thermogravimetric analysis was used to examine the thermal properties. The porous bioceramic properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, bulk density, compressive strength testing and cytotoxicity. The compressive strength and average porosity of the porous bioceramics were examined at approximately 6.8MPa and 66% under 10wt% p(NiPAAm-MAA)=99:1 condition. The ratio of HAp/β-TCP can adjust two different compositional behaviors during the 1200°C sintering process without resulting in cell toxicity. The (rhBMP-2)-HAp-PLGA carriers were fabricated as in our previous study of the double emulsion and drop-coating technique. Results of animal study included histological micrographs of the 1-mm defect in the femurs, with the rhBMP-2 carrier group, the bioceramic spacer group and the bioceramic spacer with rhBMP-2 carriers group showing better callus formation around the femur defect site than the control group. The optimal dual effects of the bone growth factors from osteoconductive bioceramics and osteoinductive rhBMP-2 carriers produced better bone formation.

Abstract
Materials offering the ability to change their characteristics in response to presented stimuli have demonstrated application in the biomedical arena, allowing control over drug delivery, protein adsorption and cell attachment to materials. Many of these smart systems are reversible, giving rise to finer control over material properties and biological interaction, useful for various therapeutic treatment strategies. Many smart materials intended for biological interaction are based around pH or thermo-responsive materials, although the use of magnetic materials, particularly in neural regeneration, has increased over the past decade. This review draws together a background of literature describing the design principles and mechanisms of smart materials. Discussion centres on recent literature regarding pH-, thermo-, magnetic and dual responsive materials, and their current applications for the treatment of neural tissue.

Abstract
Interest in thermoresponsive polymers has steadily grown over many decades, and a great deal of work has been dedicated to developing temperature sensitive macromolecules that can be crafted into new smart materials. However, the overwhelming majority of previously reported temperature-responsive polymers are based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), despite the fact that a wide range of other thermoresponsive polymers have demonstrated similar promise for the preparation of adaptive materials. Herein, we aim to highlight recent results that involve thermoresponsive systems that have not yet been as fully considered. Many of these (co)polymers represent clear opportunities for advancements in emerging biomedical and materials fields due to their increased biocompatibility and tuneable response. By highlighting recent examples of newly developed thermoresponsive polymer systems, we hope to promote the development of new generations of smart materials.

We describe an in-depth investigation on the dynamics and assembly behavior at polar-apolar interfaces of ferritin-PNIPAAm conjugates (poly-N-isopropylacrylamide). The stabilization of oil-water interfaces by the modified ferritin was investigated by dynamic surface tension measurements and compared to the individual components of the bionanoparticle conjugate, namely, unmodified ferritin and pure PNIMAAm of similar molecular weight. It was found that the modified ferritin, even at a low particle concentration, rapidly reduces the interfacial tension. The difference in interfacial stabilization was also shown by cryo-scanning electron microscopy and scanning force microscopy, which displayed very different morphologies at the polar-apolar interface for the unmodified ferritin, pure PNIPAAm, and the ferritin-PNIPAAm conjugate, respectively. The self-assembly of the ferritin-PNIPAAm was further analyzed by cryo-transmission electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy, for which a fluorescently labeled polymer was used. Both techniques revealed details on the assembly of the protein-polymer conjugate at the oil-water interface.

Abstract
Two poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PEP-PEO-P(NIPAm-co-AA)) triblock terpolymers were synthesized by a combination of anionic and RAFT polymerizations, followed by acid hydrolysis. Micellar aggregation and gelation behavior in aqueous solutions were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rheology, respectively. DLS measurements on dilute solutions revealed that the triblock terpolymers form micelles with PEP cores and PEO-P(NIPAm-co-AA) coronae at room temperature and undergo a micelle to micellar aggregate transition upon heating. Rheological measurements showed that micellar aggregation manifests itself as gelation at higher concentrations (~4 wt %). The observed thermoresponsive aggregation and gelation is due to the intermicellar association of P(NIPAm-co-AA) blocks in the coronae above the lower critical solution temperature of the P(NIPAm-co-AA) block. The critical micellar aggregation and gelation temperatures are controlled by the mole fraction and degree of acrylic acid (AA) ionization in the P(NIPAm-co-AA) block, and therefore they can be modulated as functions of both pH and AA content in the polymer.

Abstract
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a compatible or protective osmolyte that stabilizes the protein native structure through non-bonding mechanism between TMAO and hydration surface of protein. However, we have shown here first time the direct binding mechanism for naturally occurring osmolyte TMAO with hydration structure of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), an isomer of polyleucine, and subsequent aggregation of PNIPAM. The influence of TMAO on lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM was investigated as a function of TMAO concentration at different temperatures by fluorescence spectroscopy, viscosity (η), multi angle dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements. To address some of the basis for further analysis of FTIR spectra of PNIPAM, we have also measured FTIR spectra for the monomer of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in deuterium oxide (D(2)O) as a function of TMAO concentration. Our experimental results purportedly elucidate that the LCST values decrease with increasing TMAO concentration, which is mainly contributing to the direct hydrogen bonding of TMAO with the water molecules that are bound to the amide (-CONH) functional groups of the PNIPAM. We believed that the present work may act as a ladder to reach the heights of understanding of molecular mechanism between TMAO and macromolecule.

Abstract
A new concept in chromatography is proposed that utilizes a temperature-responsive surface with a constant aqueous mobile phase. The surface of the silica stationary phase in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been modified with temperature-responsive polymers to exhibit temperature-controlled hydrophilic/hydrophobic changes. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) was grafted onto (aminopropyl)silica using an activated ester-amine coupling method. These grafted silica surfaces show hydrophilic properties at lower temperatures which, as temperature increases, transform to hydrophobic surface properties. The elution profile of five mixed steroids on an HPLC column packed with this material depends largely on the temperature of the aqueous mobile phase. Retention times increase with increasing temperature without any change in the eluent. Changes in the retention times of hydrophobic steroids were larger than those for hydrophilic steroids. The temperature-responsive interaction between PIPAAm-modified silica and these steroids is proposed to result from changes in the surface properties of the HPLC stationary phase by the transition of hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface-grafted IPAAm polymers. We demonstrate a novel and useful new chromatography system in which surface properties and the resulting function of the HPLC stationary phase are controlled by external temperature changes. This method should be effective in biological and biomedical separations of peptides and proteins using only aqueous mobile phases.

Abstract
This review focuses on polymers with upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water or electrolyte solution and provides a detailed survey of the yet few existing examples. A guide for synthetic chemists for the design of novel UCST polymers is presented and possible handles to tune the phase transition temperature, sharpness of transition, hysteresis, and effectiveness of phase separation are discussed. This review tries to answer the question why polymers with UCST remained largely underrepresented in academic as well as applied research and what requirements have to be fulfilled to make these polymers suitable for the development of smart materials with a positive thermoresponse.

Abstract
A simple and rapid method for separation of cells is to functionalize magnetic particles with a receptor that selectively captures the target and then pull the magnetic particles out of the mixture upon applying a magnetic field. The separation efficiency of magnetic separation, however, is typically limited by the nonspecific interaction between the magnetic particles and nontarget species. We here present a multistage separation process that is able to effectively circumvent the problem caused by the nonspecific interactions by introducing multiple capture-and-release cycles to the magnetic separation process. The multiple capture-and-release cycles are enabled by attaching a temperature-responsive polymer to both the magnetic particles and the targets. Through temperature cycling, we demonstrate that target microspheres can be separated from nontarget microspheres in multiple separation stages. The overall enrichment factor significantly increases with the number of separation stages and reaches as high as 1.87 × 10(5) after 5 cycles.

Abstract
Temperature and pH responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPAM)) copolymer containing D-π-A type pyran-based fluorescent dye (fluorophore) and basic comonomer, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-methacrylamide (DMAPAM) was prepared by free radical polymerization. With increase of pH values, aqueous poly(NIPAM-co-DMAPAM-co-fluorophore) solution showed decrease of a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and increase of fluorescence intensity, due to a change in the ionization state. And also hydrodynamic radius of poly(NIPAM-co-DMAPAM-co-fluorophore) changed correspondingly to changes of temperature and pH values.

Abstract
The phase separation mechanism in semidilute aqueous poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions is investigated with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The nature of the phase transition is probed in static SANS measurements and with time-dependent SANS measurements after a temperature jump. The observed critical exponents of the phase transition describing the temperature dependence of the Ornstein-Zernike amplitude and correlation length are smaller than values from mean-field theory. Time-dependent SANS measurements show that the specific surface decreases with increasing time after a temperature jump above the phase transition. Thus, the formation of additional hydrogen bonds in the collapsed state is a kinetic effect: A certain fraction of water remains as bound water in the system. Moreover, H-D exchange reactions observed in PNIPAM have to be taken into account.
