Abstract
It has been difficult to decipher the mechanistic issue whether E/Z isomerization is involved in the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) process of a tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative, due to the difficulty in the synthesis of its pure E and Z conformers. In this work, pure stereoisomers of a TPE derivative named 1,2-bis{4-[1-(6-phenoxyhexyl)-4-(1,2,3-triazol)yl]phenyl}-1,2-diphenylethene (BPHTATPE) are successfully synthesized. Both isomers show remarkable AIE effect (α(AIE) ≥ 322) and high fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state (Φ(F) 100%). The conformers readily undergo E/Z isomerization upon exposure to a powerful UV light and treatment at a high temperature (>200 °C). Such conformational change, however, is not observed under normal fluorescence spectrum measurement conditions, excluding the involvement of the E/Z isomerization in the AIE process of the TPE-based luminogen. The molecules of (E)-BPHTATPE self-organize into ordered one-dimensional nanostructures such as microfibers and nanorods that show obvious optical waveguide effect. BPHTATPE shows rich chromic effects, including mechano-, piezo-, thermo-, vapo-, and chronochromisms. Its emission peak is bathochromically shifted by simple grinding and pressurization and the spectral change is reversed by fuming with a polar solvent, heating at a high temperature, or storing at room temperature for some time. The multiple chromic processes are all associated with changes in the modes of molecular packing.

Abstract
Specific bioprobes with fluorescence turn-on response are highly desirable for high contrast biosensing and imaging. In this work, we developed a new generation bioprobe by integrating tetraphenylsilole, a fluorogenic unit with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic, with cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid tripeptide (cRGD), a targeting ligand to integrin α(v)β(3) receptor. Emission of the AIE probe is switched on upon its specific binding to integrin α(v)β(3), which allows quantitative detection of integrin α(v)β(3) in solution and real-time imaging of the binding process between cRGD and integrin α(v)β(3) on cell membrane. The probe can be used for tracking integrin α(v)β(3) and for identifying integrin α(v)β(3)-positive cancer cells.

Abstract
There have been intensive studies on the newly discovered phenomena called aggregation induced emission (AIE), in contrast to the conventional aggregation quenching. Through combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics computations, we have investigated the aggregation effects on the excited state decays, both via radiative and nonradiative routes, for pyrazine derivatives 2,3-dicyano-5,6-diphenylpyrazine (DCDPP) and 2,3-dicyanopyrazino phenanthrene (DCPP) in condensed phase. We show that for DCDPP there appear AIE for all the temperature, because the phenyl ring torsional motions in gas phase can efficiently dissipate the electronic excited state energy, and get hindered in aggregate; while for its "locked"-phenyl counterpart, DCPP, theoretical calculation can only give the normal aggregation quenching. These first-principles based findings are consistent with recent experiment. The primary origin of the exotic AIE phenomena is due to the nonradiative decay effects. This is the first time that AIE is understood based on theoretical chemistry calculations for aggregates, which helps to resolve the present disputes over the mechanism.

Using fluorine-containing amphiphilic random copolymers to manipulate the quantum yields of aggregation-induced emission fluorophores in aqueous solutions and the use of these polymers for fluorescent bioimaging. Abstract
Two new series of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore-containing amphiphilic copolymers possessing the segments of a monomeric AIE fluorophore, N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA), [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (MATMA), and/or 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) were synthesized. Photophysical properties were investigated using UV-Vis absorbance and fluorescence spectrofluorometry. The increases of molar fractions of the hydrophobic AIE fluorophores and/or the trifluoroethyl moieties result in the higher quantum yields of the AIE fluorophores in the polymers. Using 1-mol% of AIE fluorophores with the tuning of molar fractions of TFEMA, 40% quantum yield was achieved, whereas only less than 10% quantum yield was obtained for the polymers without the TFEMA segments. The quantum yield difference indicates the importance of the fluorine segments for getting high quantum yields of the AIE fluorophores. These polymers were explored for fluorescent bioimaging using human brain glioblastoma U87MG and human esophagus premalignant CP-A cell lines. All the polymers are cell permeable and located in the cellular cytoplasma area. Cellular uptake was demonstrated to be through endocytosis, which is time and energy dependent. The polymers are non-cytotoxic to the two cell lines. Because the polymers contain (19)F segments, we studied the spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) and spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of these polymers. T1 and T2 are the two important parameters for the evaluations of the capacity of these polymers for further applications in (19)F magnetic resonance imaging ((19)F MRI). Structure influence on T1 and T2, especially for T2, was observed. These new multifunctional materials are the first series of fluorinated polymers with AIE fluorophores for bioapplications.

Abstract
Mechanofluorochromic materials, which are dependent on changes in physical molecular packing modes, have attracted considerable interest over the past ten years. In this review, recent progress in the area of pure organic mechanofluorochromism is summarized, and majority of the reported organic mechanofluorochromic systems are discussed, along with their derived structure-property relationships. The existence of a structural relationship between aggregation-induced emission compounds and mechanofluorochromism is recognized based on our recent results, which considered aggregation-induced emission compounds as a well of mechanofluorochromic materials. The established structure-property relationship will guide researchers in identifying and synthesizing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract
Conductive and emissive: organic transistors made from a simple styrylanthracene derivative have high charge mobility and high luminescence quantum yields. These properties are attributed to the lack of singlet fission, and challenge the idea that the efficient π interactions required for high mobility always lead to quenching of emission. The transistors emit blue electroluminescence and are stable during operation and storage.

Abstract
Fluorescent polymeric assemblies and nanoparticles (NPs) of nanoscale dimensions have become a focus of intensive investigations during the past few decades due to combined advantages such as improved biocompatibility, water dispersibility, stimuli-responsiveness, facile integration into optical detection devices, and the ability of further functionalization. In addition, the chemical composition and morphology of polymeric assemblies and NPs can be modulated via synthetic approaches, leading to the precise spatial organization of multiple fluorophores. Thus, polymeric assemblies and NPs have been utilized to optimize the photoluminescent properties of covalently or physically attached fluorophores and facilely modulate the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes when the polymeric matrix is endowed with stimuli-responsiveness. These fascinating fluorescent polymeric assemblies and NPs offer unique and versatile platforms for the construction of novel detection, imaging, biolabeling, and optoelectronic systems. This feature article focuses on the recent developments of polymeric assemblies and NPs-based stimuli-tunable fluorescent systems and highlights their future practical applications with selected literature reports.

Abstract
A major part of contemporary nanomaterials research is focused on metal and semiconductor nanoparticles, constituted of extended lattices of atoms or ions. Molecular nanoparticles assembled from small molecules through non-covalent interactions are relatively less explored but equally fascinating materials. Their unique and versatile characteristics have attracted considerable attention in recent years, establishing their identity and status as a novel class of nanomaterials. Optical characteristics of molecular nanoparticles capture the essence of their nanoscale features and form the basis of a variety of applications. This review describes the advances made in the field of fabrication of molecular nanoparticles, the wide spectrum of their optical and nonlinear optical characteristics and explorations of the potential applications that exploit their unique optical attributes.

Abstract
A new series of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type quinoacridine derivatives (1-3) with aggregation-induced red emission properties were designed and synthesized. In these compounds, the electron-withdrawing 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)acetonitrile groups act as electron-accepting units, while the alkyl-substituted conjugated core acts as electron-donating units. The restriction of intramolecular rotation was responsible for the AIE behavior of compounds 1-3. All compounds were employed as building blocks to fabricate one-dimensional (1-D) organic luminescent nano- or microwires based on reprecipitation or slow evaporation approaches. Morphological transition from zero-dimensional (0-D) hollow nanospheres to 1-D nanotubes has been observed by recording SEM and TEM images of aggregated sates of compound 2 in THF/H(2)O mixtures at different aging time. It was demonstrated that the synthesized compounds with different lengths of alkyl chains displayed different wire formation properties. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of compound 2 provided reasonable explanation for the formation of 1-D nano- or microstructures.

Abstract
Amyloid fibrillation of proteins is associated with a great variety of pathologic conditions. Development of new molecules that can monitor amyloidosis kinetics and inhibit fibril formation is of great diagnostic and therapeutic value. In this work, we have developed a biocompatible molecule that functions as an ex situ monitor and an in situ inhibitor for protein fibrillation, using insulin as a model protein. 1,2-Bis[4-(3-sulfonatopropoxyl)phenyl]-1,2-diphenylethene salt (BSPOTPE) is nonemissive when it is dissolved with native insulin in an incubation buffer but starts to fluoresce when it is mixed with preformed insulin fibril, enabling ex situ monitoring of amyloidogenesis kinetics and high-contrast fluorescence imaging of protein fibrils. Premixing BSPOTPE with insulin, on the other hand, inhibits the nucleation process and impedes the protofibril formation. Increasing the dose of BSPOTPE boosts its inhibitory potency. Theoretical modeling using molecular dynamics simulations and docking reveals that BSPOTPE is prone to binding to partially unfolded insulin through hydrophobic interaction of the phenyl rings of BSPOTPE with the exposed hydrophobic residues of insulin. Such binding is assumed to have stabilized the partially unfolded insulin and obstructed the formation of the critical oligomeric species in the protein fibrillogenesis process.
