Molecular and Supramolecular Networks on Surfaces: From Two-Dimensional Crystal Engineering to Reactivity

Two-dimensional self-assembled structures of melamine and melem at the aqueous solution-Au(111) interface

Self-assembled structures of melamine and the condensed melamine derivative melem were investigated at aqueous solution-Au(111) interfaces by cyclic voltammetry and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation. The adsorption/desorption behaviors of both molecules on Au(111) surfaces could be controlled by varying the electrochemical potential and solution concentration. In the negative potential region, self-assembled structures of melem and melamine were constructed by double hydrogen bonding systems between nitrogen atoms of triazine rings and amine groups. In addition, melem formed a closely packed structure at potentials of between -0.3 and -0.15 V or in solutions at higher concentrations.

Surface-enhanced Raman signal for terbium single-molecule magnets grafted on graphene

We report the preparation and characterization of monolayer graphene decorated with functionalized single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The grafting ligands provide a homogeneous and selective deposition on graphene. The grafting is characterized by combined Raman microspectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electron transport measurements. We observe a surface-enhanced Raman signal that allowed us to study the grafting down to the limit of a few isolated molecules. The weak interaction through charge transfer is in agreement with ab initio DFT calculations. Our results indicate that both molecules and graphene are essentially intact and the interaction is driven by van der Waals forces.

Two-dimensional molecular organization of pyridinecarboxylic acids adsorbed on graphite

Pyridinecarboxylic acids 3-9 are adsorbed from solution onto graphite to produce well-ordered adlayers that can be imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy. Hydrogen bonds involving the carboxyl groups and the nitrogen atom of the pyridyl ring play key roles in controlling the observed two-dimensional (2D) organization. Pyridinecarboxylic acids have a strong tendency to associate to form hydrogen-bonded chains and cyclic oligomers, which then pack to produce sheets. The preference for sheets ensures that molecular organization in 2D and 3D typically shows a significant degree of homology. Together, our observations highlight the potential of engineering similarly ordered 2D and 3D structures built from simple compounds that combine an inherent affinity for surfaces with an ability to engage in strong coplanar intermolecular interactions.

Two-dimensional structures of anthracene derivatives: photodimerization and host-guest chemistry

By using a simple anthracene derivative with four alkoxy tails, a two-dimensional patterned surface was fabricated. The two-dimensional structures were directly visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solid/liquid interface. The anthracene derivative formed highly ordered structures displaying cavities into which solvent molecules of 1-phenyloctane were coadsorbed. The functionality of the patterned surface was demonstrated by activating host-guest chemistry as the solvent molecules could be replaced by coronene, whose size is almost identical to the cavities formed by the anthracene derivative. Furthermore, [4 + 4] photodimerization of the anthracene derivative was performed at the solid/liquid interface and revealed that the physical height and electron density of the states were changed, resulting in the increase of an apparent height in the STM images. We demonstrate thus that the porous network of the two-dimensional pattern created by the anthracene derivative can be applied for selectively incorporating guest molecules and for photoprocessing.

Guest-induced growth of a surface-based supramolecular bilayer

Self-assembly of planar molecules on a surface can result in the formation of a wide variety of close-packed or porous structures. Two-dimensional porous arrays provide host sites for trapping guest species of suitable size. Here we show that a non-planar guest species (C(60)) can play a more complex role by promoting the growth of a second layer of host molecules (p-terphenyl-3,5,3″,5″-tetracarboxylic acid) above and parallel to the surface so that self-assembly is extended into the third dimension. The addition of guest molecules and the formation of the second layer are co-dependent. Adding a planar guest (coronene) can displace the C(60) and cause reversion to a monolayer arrangement. The system provides an example of a reversible transformation between a planar and a non-planar supramolecular network, an important step towards the controlled self-assembly of functional, three-dimensional, surface-based supramolecular architectures.

Supramolecular surface-confined architectures created by self-assembly of triangular phenylene-ethynylene macrocycles via van der Waals interaction

At the liquid/graphite interface triangular and rhombic phenylene-ethynylene macrocycles substituted by alkyl chains self-assemble to form porous two-dimensional (2D) molecular networks of honeycomb and Kagomé types, respectively, or close-packed non-porous structures via alkyl chain interdigitation as the directional intermolecular linkages. Factors that affect the formation of the 2D molecular networks, such as alkyl chain length, solvent, solute concentration, and co-adsorption of guest molecules, were elucidated through a systematic study. For the porous networks, various molecules and molecular clusters were adsorbed in the pores reflecting the size and shape complementarity, exploring a new field of 2D host-guest chemistry.

Porous graphene as an atmospheric nanofilter

The fabrication of nanoscale membranes exhibiting high selectivity is an emerging field of research. The possibility to use bottom-up approaches to fabricate a filter with porous graphene and analyze its functionality with first principle calculations is investigated. Here, the porous network is produced by self-assembly of the hexaiodo-substituted macrocycle cyclohexa-m-phenylene (CHP). The resulting porous network exhibits an extremely high selectivity in favor of H(2) and He among other atmospheric gases, such as Ne, O(2), N(2), CO, CO(2), NH(3), and Ar. The presented membrane is superior to traditional filters using polymers or silica and could have great potential for further technological applications such as gas sensors or fuel cells.

Patterning of functional compounds by multicomponent Langmuir-Blodgett transfer and subsequent chemical modification

The multicomponent transfer of functional molecules by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique onto solid substrates offers an interesting route for generation of functionalized patterns by self-assembly over large surface areas. In the present paper, we discuss LB transfer of mixed LB films containing different functional amphiphiles (an azide, an estrone derivate, a lithocholic acid derivative, or an alkoxyamine) in combination with dipalmitoylphosphatidyl choline (DPPC). The effect of the mixing ratio on pattern formation is discussed, and we provide some general design rules for the synthesis of functional molecules to be applicable for the multicomponent LB transfer process. We show that these functional compounds can be successfully transferred to oxidized Si wafers in stripe pattern. Covalent attachment of the functional entities is easily achieved, and the patterned surfaces are then ready for further chemical manipulation. This is demonstrated by site-specifically covalent attaching dye molecules applying the copper(l)-catalyzed alkyne azide click reaction (CuAAC), the thiol-ene reaction, and a surface-initiated radical polymerization.

Entropically stabilized growth of a two-dimensional random tiling

The assembly of molecular networks into structures such as random tilings and glasses has recently been demonstrated for a number of two-dimensional systems. These structures are dynamically arrested on experimental time scales, so the critical regime in their formation is that of initial growth. Here, we identify a transition from energetic to entropic stabilization in the nucleation and growth of a molecular rhombus tiling. Calculations based on a lattice-gas model show that clustering of topological defects and the formation of faceted boundaries followed by a slow relaxation to equilibrium occur under conditions of energetic stabilization. We also identify an entropically stabilized regime in which the system grows directly into an equilibrium configuration without the need for further relaxation. Our results provide a methodology for identifying equilibrium and nonequilibrium randomness in the growth of molecular tilings, and we demonstrate that equilibrium spatial statistics are compatible with exponentially slow dynamical behavior.

Fullerene/porphyrin multicomponent nanostructures on Ag(110): from supramolecular self-assembly to extended copolymers

A novel two-step bottom-up approach to construct a 2D long-range ordered, covalently bonded fullerene/porphyrin binary nanostructure is presented: in the first place, reversible supramolecular interactions between C60 and 5,15-bis(4-aminophenyl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin are exploited to obtain large domains of an ordered binary network, subsequently a reaction between fullerene molecules and the amino-groups residing on porphyrin units, triggered by thermal treatment, is used to freeze the supramolecular nanostructure with covalent bonds. The resulting nanostructure resists high temperature treatments as expected for an extended covalent network, whereas very similar fullerene/porphyrin nanostructures held together only by weak interactions are disrupted upon annealing at the same or at lower temperatures.

Towards supramolecular engineering of functional nanomaterials: pre-programming multi-component 2D self-assembly at solid-liquid interfaces

Materials with a pre-programmed order at the supramolecular level can be engineered with a sub-nanometer precision making use of reversible non- covalent interactions. The intrinsic ability of supramolecular materials to recognize and exchange their constituents makes them constitutionally dynamic materials. The tailoring of the materials properties relies on the full control over the self-assembly behavior of molecular modules exposing recognition sites and incorporating functional units. In this review we focus on three classes of weak-interactions to form complex 2D architectures starting from properly designed molecular modules: van der Waals, metallo-ligand and hydrogen bonding. Scanning tunneling microscopy studies will provide evidence with a sub-nanometer resolution, on the formation of responsive multicomponent architectures with controlled geometries and properties. Such endeavor enriches the scientist capability of generating more and more complex smart materials featuring controlled functions and unprecedented properties.

Templating molecular adsorption using a covalent organic framework

A two-dimensional nanoporous covalent organic framework can be prepared on a Au(111) substrate with near complete surface coverage and can be used to control the organisation of a sublimed layer of C(60).

Molecular Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Systems Observed by STM

Since the invention of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), 2D supramolecular architectures have been observed under various experimental conditions. The construction of these architectures arises from the balance between interactions at the medium-solid interface. This review summarizes molecular motion observed in 2D-supramolecular structures on surfaces using nanospace resolution STM. The observation of molecular motion on surfaces provides a visual understanding of intermolecular interactions, which are the major driving force behind supramolecular arrangement.

Self-assembly of enantiopure domains: the case of indigo on Cu(111)

The adsorption of indigo molecules on Cu(111) was investigated by low temperature (5 K) scanning tunneling microscopy from the isolated single molecule regime to one monolayer. Structural optimization and image calculations demonstrate that the molecules are in a physisorbed state. Because of the reduced symmetry at the surface, single molecules acquire a chiral character upon adsorption leading to a two-dimensional (2D) chirality. They adopt two adsorption configurations, related by a mirror symmetry of the substrate, each with a distinct molecular orientation. Consequently, the 2D chirality is expressed by the orientation of the molecule. For higher coverage, molecules self-assemble by hydrogen bonding in nearly homochiral molecular chains, whose orientation is determined by the orientation taken by the isolated molecules. When the coverage approaches one monolayer, these chains pack into domains. Finally, the completion of the monolayer induces the expulsion of the molecules of the wrong chirality that are still in these domains, leading to perfect resolution in enantiopure domains.

Tailoring two-dimensional PTCDA-melamine self-assembled architectures at room temperature by tuning molecular ratio

Engineering and tuning multi-component supramolecular self-assemblies on surfaces is one of the challenges of nanotechnology. We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the influence of molecular ratio on the self-assembly of PTCDA-melamine structures on Au(111)-(22 x complex square root of 3). Our observations reveal that three different chiral supramolecular networks having a PTCDA:melamine ratio of 3:2, 1:2, 1:4 can be selectively created by tuning the ratio of molecules deposited on the surface. The 1:2 ratio network having melamine in excess has been observed previously but the 1:4 network has not yet been reported. In comparison, the multi-component 3:2 network having PTCDA in excess is a completely new structure.

An electron induced two-dimensional switch made of azobenzene derivatives anchored in supramolecular assemblies

Supramolecular assemblies of 4-anilino-4'-nitroazobenzene are investigated on the Au(111) surface by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy with submolecular resolution. Adsorption at 250 K leads to three different structures that are formed via hydrogen bonds: a star structure and two types of line structures: a meandering and a zigzag line. The formation of these supramolecular assemblies is affected by the available space on the fcc domains of the reconstructed Au(111) substrate as well as by the two-dimensional chirality of the molecules on the surface. The star structure is enantiomerically pure, while both types of lines consist of a racemic mixture. Bonding between homochiral pairs differ from the one between heterochiral pairs in the position of the hydrogen bonds. Inside these supramolecular assemblies two configurations of the molecules are identified: An almost straight trans-configuration and a slightly bent cis*-configuration. The trans-configuration largely reflects the structure of this isomer in gas phase, while the cis*-configuration is two-dimensional on the surface in contrast to the three-dimensional gas phase cis-configuration. The reversible trans-cis* isomerization is induced by electron tunneling through the LUMO+1 state of the molecule, which is located at +2.9 V.

Strong adsorption of aminotriazines on graphene

DFT calculations reveal that aminotriazines have a strong affinity for graphite and suggest that part of the driving force for adsorption is a specific attractive interaction of NR(2) groups with the underlying surface.

Tuning the packing density of 2D supramolecular self-assemblies at the solid-liquid interface using variable temperature

The two-dimensional (2D) crystal engineering of molecular architectures on surfaces requires controlling various parameters related respectively to the substrate, the chemical structure of the molecules, and the environmental conditions. We investigate here the influence of temperature on the self-assembly of hexakis(n-dodecyl)-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC-C(12)) adsorbed on gold using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the liquid/solid interface. We show that the packing density of 2D self-assembled HBC-C(12) can be precisely tuned by adjusting the substrate temperature. Increasing the temperature progressively over the 20-50 degrees C range induces three irreversible phase transitions and a 3-fold increase of the packing density from 0.111 to 0.356 molecule/nm(2). High-resolution STM images reveal that this 2D packing density increase arises from the stepwise desorption of the n-dodecyl chains from the gold surface. Such temperature-controlled irreversible phase transitions are thus a versatile tool that can then be used to adjust the packing density of highly ordered functional materials in view of applications in organic electronic devices.

L-tyrosine on Ag(111): universality of the amino acid 2D zwitterionic bonding scheme?

We present a combined study of the adsorption and ordering of the l-tyrosine amino acid on the close-packed Ag(111) noble-metal surface in ultrahigh vacuum by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. On this substrate the biomolecules self-assemble at temperatures exceeding 320 K into linear structures primarily following specific crystallographic directions and evolve with larger molecular coverage into two-dimensional nanoribbons which are commensurate with the underlying atomic lattice. Our high resolution topographical STM data reveal noncovalent molecular dimerization within the highly ordered one-dimensional nanostructures, which recalls the geometrical pattern already seen in the l-methionine/Ag(111) system and supports a universal bonding scheme for amino acids on smooth and unreactive metal surfaces. The molecules desorb for temperatures above 350 K, indicating a relatively weak interaction between the molecules and the substrate. XPS measurements reveal a zwitterionic adsorption, whereas NEXAFS experiments show a tilted adsorption configuration of the phenol moiety. This enables the interdigitation between aromatic side chains of adjacent molecules via parallel-displaced pi-pi interactions which, together with the hydrogen-bonding capability of the hydroxyl functionality, presumably mediates the emergence of the self-assembled supramolecular nanoribbons.
