We evaluate the correlation between binding energy (BE) and electron density ρ(r) at the bond critical point for 28 neutral hydrogen bonds, recently reported by Emamian and co-workers (J. Comput. Chem., 2019, 40, 2868). As an efficient tool, we use local stretching force constant k HB a derived from the local vibrational mode theory of Konkoli and Cremer. We compare the physical nature of BE versus k HB a , and provide an important explanation for cases with significant deviation in the BE- k HB a relation as well as in the BE-ρ(r) correlation. We also show that care has to be taken when different hydrogen bond strength measures are compared. The BE is a cumulative hydrogen bond strength measure while k HB a is a local measure of hydrogen bond strength covering different aspects of bonding. A simplified and unified description of hydrogen bonding is not always possible and needs an in-depth understanding of the systems involved.

Crystalline Peroxosolvates: Nature of the Coformer, Hydrogen-Bonded Networks and Clusters, Intermolecular Interactions

Despite the technological importance of urea perhydrate (percarbamide) and sodium percarbonate, and the growing technological attention to solid forms of peroxide, fewer than 45 peroxosolvates were known by 2000. However, recent advances in X-ray diffractometers more than tripled the number of structurally characterized peroxosolvates over the last 20 years, and even more so, allowed energetic interpretation and gleaning deeper insight into peroxosolvate stability. To date, 134 crystalline peroxosolvates have been structurally resolved providing sufficient insight to justify a first review article on the subject. In the first chapter of the review, a comprehensive analysis of the structural databases is carried out revealing the nature of the co-former in crystalline peroxosolvates. In the majority of cases, the coformers can be classified into three groups: (1) salts of inorganic and carboxylic acids; (2) amino acids, peptides, and related zwitterions; and (3) molecular compounds with a lone electron pair on nitrogen and/or oxygen atoms. The second chapter of the review is devoted to H-bonding in peroxosolvates. The database search and energy statistics revealed the importance of intermolecular hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) which play a structure-directing role in the considered crystals. H2O2 always forms two H-bonds as a proton donor, the energy of which is higher than the energy of analogous H-bonds existing in isostructural crystalline hydrates. This phenomenon is due to the higher acidity of H2O2 compared to water and the conformational mobility of H2O2. The dihedral angle H-O-O-H varies from 20 to 180° in crystalline peroxosolvates. As a result, infinite H-bonded 1D chain clusters are formed, consisting of H2O2 molecules, H2O2 and water molecules, and H2O2 and halogen anions. H2O2 can form up to four H-bonds as a proton acceptor. The third chapter of the review is devoted to energetic computations and in particular density functional theory with periodic boundary conditions. The approaches are considered in detail, allowing one to obtain the H-bond energies in crystals. DFT computations provide deeper insight into the stability of peroxosolvates and explain why percarbamide and sodium percarbonate are stable to H2O2/H2O isomorphic transformations. The review ends with a description of the main modern trends in the synthesis of crystalline peroxosolvates, in particular, the production of peroxosolvates of high-energy compounds and mixed pharmaceutical forms with antiseptic and analgesic effects.

Determinant Factor for Thermodynamic Stability of Sulfuric Acid-Amine Complexes

Atmospheric amines are thought to play significant roles in the nucleation of sulfuric acid-mediated aerosol particles. Their enhancing effects on the stabilization of the related complexes have formerly been correlated with the amine base strength, but there are a few exceptions reported. In this work, the influence of seven alkylamines on the thermodynamic stability of sulfuric acid-amine complexes has been theoretically investigated, e.g., ethylamine, propylamine, isopropylamine, tert-butylamine, dimethylamine, ethylmethylamine, and trimethylamine. For all primary and secondary amine-mediated complexes, a dual hydrogen bond configuration is generally suggested in the most stable isomer. The stabilization of this special structure predicted by the electrostatic potential distribution on the molecular surface of amines exactly agrees with the base strength sequence, providing crucial evidence for the previous deduction of correlation between the base strength and the enhancing effect. Meanwhile, the considerable van der Waals interactions are found between the free hydroxyl of sulfuric acid and the β-methyl group of amine, resulting in the extra stability for sulfuric acid-dimethylamine and sulfuric acid-ethylmethylamine complexes. Therefore, the electrostatic potential distribution of amines is the essential determinant factor for the thermodynamic stability of the relevant complexes. Our conclusions provide new insight into a way to evaluate the enhancing abilities of amines in aerosol particle nucleation.

Field-induced single molecule magnet behavior of a dinuclear cobalt(II) complex: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Two dinuclear cobalt(ii) complexes, [(dmso)CoIIL1(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (1) and [(dmso)CoIIL2(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (2) [dmso = dimethylsulfoxide, H2L1 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-methoxyphenol) and H2L2 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic-susceptibility measurements and various spectroscopic techniques. Each complex contains a cobalt(ii) center with a slightly distorted octahedral geometry and a second cobalt(ii) center with a distorted trigonal prismatic one. To obtain insight into the physical nature of weak non-covalent interactions, we have extensively used the Bader's quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM). In addition, the non-covalent interaction reduced density gradient (NCI-RDG) methods established the presence of such non-covalent intermolecular interactions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that both cobalt centers in each complex are in the high spin state (S = 3/2) and both complexes show weak ferromagnetic couplings through the double phenoxido bridges (J = 3.36(3) cm-1 in 1 and 4.56(2) cm-1 in 2). The magnetic properties of both complexes can be fitted to a Co(ii) dimer model including similar orbital reduction factors (α = -0.94(1) for 1 and -0.85(1) for 2) although different zero field splitting parameters D(1) = 11.0(4) cm-1 and D(2) = 19.5(4) cm-1 in 1 and D(1) = 8.2(4) cm-1 and D(2) = -1.3(4) cm-1 in 2. AC magnetic measurements reveal that the CoII2 unit in complex 2 exhibits field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures and high frequencies.

Theoretical Insights into the Effect of Cations, Anions, and Water on Fixation of CO2 Catalyzed by Different Ionic Liquids

Chemical fixation of CO₂ is an efficient means for decreasing amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere. One of promising technologies is the cycloaddition of CO₂ with epoxides to synthesize cyclic carbonates. In this reaction, ionic liquid (IL) catalysts show versatile and unique advantages. However, the reaction mechanism using ILs is not clear. In this work, a detailed theoretical investigation was performed by DFT calculations. The energetic profile shows that the reaction consists of three steps, with the ring-opening step being the rate-determining step. Based on the results, effects of cations, anions and water were calculated. Cations show strong hydrogen bonding interactions with epoxides, which decreases the energy barrier of the ring-opening step, indicating that hydrogen bonds play a positive role in promoting the reaction. The effect of anions was evaluated by nucleophilicity index (N_Nu ); anions with a larger N_Nu (stronger nucleophilicity) value show lower energy barriers. The influence of water was investigated by implicit and explicit models. Compared with the solvent-free case, water as an implicit solvent decreases the energy barriers through polarization with epoxides. In the explicit solvent model, the water molecules form new hydrogen bonds with epoxides and cations, which can efficiently reduce the energy barriers. The result indicates that there is a new synergic catalytic mechanism, in which the water acts not only as solvent but also as a catalyst in the reaction. Supporting experiments further confirm the calculation results.

Separating Enthalpic, Configurational, and Solvation Entropic Components in Host-Guest Binding: Application to Cucurbit[7]uril Complexes through a Full In Silico Approach via Water Nanodroplets

Cucurbiturils are a family of supramolecular hosts obtained by condensation of glycoluril and formaldehyde. Cucurbit[7]uril, CB[7], is the most prominent member of the family for its biomolecular interest, arising from its mild solubility in water and for its strong binding with a large variety of guests containing nonpolar fragments such as adamantanes and ferrocene. For instance, CB[7] encapsulates diamantane diammonium iodide with an attomolar dissociation constant, a value unmatched even in natural encapsulation processes. Computational chemistry has been extensively employed to describe the enthalpic-entropic compensation principle of the molecular recognition process of cucurbituril hosts, but the synergistic contribution of experimental data is required for accurate results to be obtained. This paper proposes the first fully theoretical model able to reconcile the calculated thermodynamics of the complexation process with the experimental data obtained by calorimetry (ITC) for cucurbit[7]uril. The model allows the isolation and estimation of all of the enthalpic and entropic contributions coming from solute and solvent alike to the whole host-guest binding event and enables the straightforward calculation of the contribution of the solvation entropy to the binding.

Search for optimal monomers for fabricating active layers in thin-film composite osmosis membranes by conceptual density functional theory

This paper presented an effective way to select monomers to fabricate active layers for the thin-film composite (TFC) membrane at the molecular level. Five types of diamine monomers and six acid chloride monomers were firstly selected by a conformer search process. Then, the conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) method was adopted to examine the properties of these monomers. A few different molecular properties were calculated, including relative energy, hydrogen bond, global/local/difference local softness, hardness, chemical potential, and electrophilicity index. Similarly, polyamides that were the productions of interfacial polymerization reaction were also analyzed by CDFT. Our results showed that the mixture of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) for the interfacial polymerization was ideal synthetic materials to fabricate the active layer of TFC membranes. van der Waals potential: an important complement to molecular electrostatic potential in studying intermolecular interactions

Electrostatics and van der Waals (vdW) interactions are two major components of intermolecular weak interactions. Electrostatic potential has been a very popular function in revealing electrostatic interaction between the system under study and other species, while the role of vdW potential was less recognized and has long been ignored. In this paper, we explicitly present definition of vdW potential, describe its implementation details, and demonstrate its important practical values by several examples. We hope this work can arouse researchers' attention to the vdW potential and promote its application in the studies of weak interactions. Calculation, visualization, and quantitative analysis of the vdW potential have been supported by our freely available code Multiwfn ( http://sobereva.com/multiwfn ).

A pillar[5]arene-based fluorescent sensor for sensitive detection of L-Met through a dual-site collaborative mechanism

L-Methionine (L-Met) is one of the essential amino acids in human health, efficiently detect L-Met is a significant issue. Herein, a concept "dual-site collaborative recognition" had been successfully introduced into the design and achieved high selective and sensitive recognition of L-Met. In order to realize the "dual-site collaborative recognition", we rationally designed and synthesized an ester functionalized pillar[5]arene-based fluorescent sensor (SP5). And it shows blue Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence. In the SP5, the pillar[5]arene group act as C-H···π interactions site, and ester group serve as multi hydrogen bonding acceptor. Interestingly, the SP5 exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity (2.84 × 10^-8 M) towards L-Met based on the collaboration of electron-rich cavernous pillar[5]arene group and ester group through C-H···π and H-bond interactions, respectively. This "dual-site collaborative recognition" mechanism has been investigated by ¹H NMR, ESI-MS and theoretical calculation including frontier orbital (HOMO and LUMO), electrostatic potential (ESP) and the noncovalent interaction (NCI). These theoretical calculations not only support the proposed host-guest recognition mechanism, but also provided visualized information on the "dual-site collaborative recognition" mode. Furthermore, the concept "dual-site collaborative recognition" is an effective strategy for easily detecting biological molecules.

Understanding noncovalent bonds and their controlling forces

The fundamental underpinnings of noncovalent bonds are presented, focusing on the σ-hole interactions that are closely related to the H-bond. Different means of assessing their strength and the factors that control it are discussed. The establishment of a noncovalent bond is monitored as the two subunits are brought together, allowing the electrostatic, charge redistribution, and other effects to slowly take hold. Methods are discussed that permit prediction as to which site an approaching nucleophile will be drawn, and the maximum number of bonds around a central atom in its normal or hypervalent states is assessed. The manner in which a pair of anions can be held together despite an overall Coulombic repulsion is explained. The possibility that first-row atoms can participate in such bonds is discussed, along with the introduction of a tetrel analog of the dihydrogen bond.

One-Step Instantaneous Detection of Multiple Military and Improvised Explosives Facilitated by Colorimetric Reagent Design

Although colorimetric detection based on reagents has been widely used in the fields of practical trace analysis, its versatility for detecting multitargets remains the most challenging problem. As a proof of concept, a general colorimetric reagent based on potassium isopropanol (C₃H₇KO) and dimethyl sulfoxide for one-step instantaneous detection and discrimination of typical military and improvised explosives was designed. Vivid colors from none to purple red, blue green, yellow green, and green were shown, respectively, when detecting 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), elemental sulfur (S), and potassium permanganate (KMnO₄). The unique design including the specific nucleophilic addition reaction and the base-catalyzed oxidation-induced electron transfer ensures perfect selectivity even upon facing more than 20 interferents. It is further experimentally demonstrated that the confinement effect introduced by Tween-20 plays an essential role in enhancing the color signal on the surface and thus boosts the detection performance even with a mass as low as 1.45 ng. The applicability of this versatile colorimetric reagent was further verified by integrating the reagent onto paper strips for the in-field identification of TNT, DNT, S, and KMnO₄ with the help of a portable smartphone-based microscope apparatus, and a practical detection mass of 10.3 ng could be realized. We expect the present colorimetric reagent design strategy would pave a way for one-step instantaneous visual detection toward trace multianalytes.

A density functional theory study on the electronic and adsorption characteristics of cyclo M9N9 (M = B and Al)

On the basis of experimental and theoretical calculations conducted for cyclo C₁₈, we predicted two novel inorganic cyclo M₉N₉ (M = B and Al) molecules. Because of the significant difference in electronegativity between M and N atoms, M-N bonds were ionic. Furthermore, the interaction of cyclo M₉N₉ with cyclopropylpiperazine (CPPP) was investigated. In cyclo M₉N₉, each M atom could adsorb one CPPP molecule. The CPPP molecules exhibited a preference to remain outside cyclo M₉N₉ molecules. Depending on the structural characteristics of CPPP molecules, the exciting part is that up to four CPPP molecules could be adsorbed on the exterior surface of cyclo M₉N₉. We calculated adsorption energies and analyzed the main structural parameters in the process. The research results indicated that adsorption on cyclo Al₉N₉ was energetically more favorable than that on cyclo B₉N₉. The cyclo M₉N₉ have considerable potential in the future. Graphical abstract.

Modulating electrolyte structure for ultralow temperature aqueous zinc batteries

Rechargeable aqueous batteries are an up-and-coming system for potential large-scale energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, the freeze of aqueous electrolyte limits the low-temperature operation of such batteries. Here, we report the breakage of original hydrogen-bond network in ZnCl₂ solution by modulating electrolyte structure, and thus suppressing the freeze of water and depressing the solid-liquid transition temperature of the aqueous electrolyte from 0 to –114 °C. This ZnCl₂-based low-temperature electrolyte renders polyaniline||Zn batteries available to operate in an ultra-wide temperature range from –90 to +60 °C, which covers the earth surface temperature in record. Such polyaniline||Zn batteries are robust at –70 °C (84.9 mA h g⁻¹) and stable during over 2000 cycles with ~100% capacity retention. This work significantly provides an effective strategy to propel low-temperature aqueous batteries via tuning the electrolyte structure and widens the application range of temperature adaptation of aqueous batteries.

Rechargeable aqueous batteries are promising for potential large-scale energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. Here the authors analyse a zinc chloride based low-temperature electrolyte for improving practicability of the aqueous batteries.

Green Synthesis, SC-XRD, Non-Covalent Interactive Potential and Electronic Communication via DFT Exploration of Pyridine-Based Hydrazone

Ultrasound-based synthesis at room temperature produces valuable compounds greener and safer than most other methods. This study presents the sonochemical fabrication and characterization of a pyridine-based halogenated hydrazone, (E)-2-((6-chloropyridin-2-yl)oxy)-N′-(2-hydroxybenzylidene) acetohydrazide (HBPAH). The NMR spectroscopic technique was used to determine the structure, while SC-XRD confirmed its crystalline nature. Our structural studies revealed that strong, inter-molecular attractive forces stabilize this crystalline organic compound. Moreover, the compound was optimized at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level using the Crystallographic Information File (CIF). Natural bonding orbital (NBO) and natural population analysis (NPA) were performed at the same level using optimized geometry. Time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) was performed at the B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) method to calculate the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). The global reactivity descriptors were determined using HOMO and LUMO energy gaps. Theoretical calculations based on the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QT-AIM) and Hirshfeld analyses identified the non-covalent and covalent interactions of the HBPAH compound. Consequently, QT-AIM and Hirshfeld analyses agree with experimental results.

Enantioselective Intramolecular Allylic Substitution via Synergistic Palladium/Chiral Phosphoric Acid Catalysis: Insight into Stereoinduction through Statistical Modeling

The mode of asymmetric induction in an enantioselective intramolecular allylic substitution reaction catalyzed by a combination of palladium and a chiral phosphoric acid was investigated by a combined experimental and statistical modeling approach. Experiments to probe nonlinear effects, the reactivity of deuterium-labeled substrates, and control experiments revealed that nucleophilic attack to the π-allylpalladium intermediate is the enantio-determining step, in which the chiral phosphate anion is involved in stereoinduction. Using multivariable linear regression analysis, we determined that multiple noncovalent interactions with the chiral environment of the phosphate anion are integral to enantiocontrol in the transition state. The synthetic protocol to form chiral pyrrolidines was further applied to the asymmetric construction of C-O bonds at fully substituted carbon centers in the synthesis of chiral 2,2-disubstituted benzomorpholines.

On the Interaction between Superatom Al12Be and DNA Nucleobases/Base Pairs: Bonding Nature and Potential Applications in O2 Activation and CO Oxidation

The interaction between quasi-chalcogen superatom Al₁₂Be and DNA nucleobases/base pairs has been explored by searching for the most stable Al₁₂Be-X (X = DNA bases and base pairs) complexes. Our results reveal that Al₁₂Be prefers to combine with guanine by two Al-O and Al-N bonds rather than the other DNA bases, no matter in free state or base pair. The formed Al-N and Al-O bonds between Al₁₂Be and DNA bases proved to be strong polar covalent bonds by the Wiberg bond index, nature bond orbitals, atoms in molecules theory, localized molecular orbitals, and electron localization functions analyses. More importantly, it is found that the formed global minimum of Al₁₂Be-G has the ability to activate an oxygen molecule into a peroxide dianion ¹O₂ ^2-, which can further catalyze the CO oxidation via the Eley-Rideal mechanism with a small energy barrier of 7.78 kcal/mol. We hope that this study could not only provide an in-depth understanding on the intermolecular interaction between metallic superatoms and DNA at the molecular level but also attract more interest in designing and synthesizing superatom-based heterogeneous catalysts with DNA/nucleobases as basic building blocks.

Mechanism and Origins of Enantio- and Regioselectivities in Catalytic Asymmetric Minisci-Type Addition to Heteroarenes

This work presents a density functional theory (DFT) study on the mechanism and origins of enantio- and regioselectivities in dual photoredox/chiral Brønsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric Minisci-type addition of carbon-centered radicals to N-heteroarenes [Science, 2018, 360, 419-422]. The previously proposed mechanism has been partially revised. First, photoexcited *[Ir^III] is reductively quenched by TRIP anion rather than the experimentally proposed neutral radical generated from the chiral Brønsted acid cycle. Second, final product formation involves a hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) from a neutral radical intermediate to the TRIP radical, instead of single-electron transfer (SET) to *[Ir^III]. The TRIP catalyst has been shown to play a triple role by reductively quenching *[Ir^III] with its anion form, activating the substrate, and inducing asymmetry. The calculated results rationalize the experimentally observed enantio- and regioselectivities and reveal that the enantioselectivity of the reaction originates from the hydrogen-bond interaction between TRIP and the N-H group of the carbon-centered radical, and the regioselectivity arises from the electron-withdrawing inductive effect from the protonated N-atom and the intramolecular hydrogen-bond interaction between the acetylamino group and the protonated pyridine ring. We also provide explanations for the experimentally observed a dramatic decrease in enantioselectivity when changing substrate or radical precursor and rationalize the solvent-controlled switch of regioselectivity.

Theoretical investigation on the ESIPT mechanism and fluorescent sensing mechanism of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) thiazole-4-carboxaldeyde in methanol

2-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl) thiazole-4-carboxaldeyde (aldehyde 1) and hemiacetal 2 were selected to study the mechanism of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and the detecting of Al³⁺ ion in methanol by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental values. The intramolecular H-bond is enhanced in the first excited-state based on the analyses of structural parameters, frontier molecular orbitals and electronic spectra. The stronger intramolecular H-bond is more favorable for ESIPT process. In order to further demonstrate the proton transfer process, we constructed the potential energy curves of probe 1 and 2 in both ground- and excited-states, and concluded that proton transfer processes in probe 1 and 2 are apt to happen in the S₁ state. In addition, the Mayer bond order, energy gap and absorption and fluorescence spectra were applied to interpret the process of detection of Al³⁺ ion.

Switching Xe/Kr adsorption selectivity in modified SBMOF-1: a theoretical study

The separation of Xe/Kr mixtures in used nuclear fuel (UNF) has attracted lots of attention, but no report on the adsorption and separation of Kr from mixed Kr/Xe at room temperature can be found. From grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation, it is found that by replacing the metal center Ca of SBMOF-1 with Mg, due to the appropriate pore size, the adsorption selectivity (S Kr/Xe) was extremely high (250 000) and the adsorption capacity for Kr on Mg-SBMOF-1 modified with -NH2 was increased by 300% to 1.020 from 0.248 mmol g-1. Based on the calculations of density functional theory (DFT), we found that the stronger electron-donating ability of a functional group will increase the polarizability of the ligand, and thus increase the adsorption capacity to Kr. In addition, the analysis of electronic structures with independent gradient model (IGM) and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicates that van der Waals forces will be responsible for the interaction of Mg-SBMOF-1 and Kr gas. Among them, the interaction of Mg-SBMOF-1 and Kr gas is mainly an induction force, while that of modifications with -CH3 and -NH2 is mainly a dispersion force. The present theoretical study represents the first report of the separation of Kr from Xe with MOF adsorption at room temperature. We hope this work may promote the experimental synthesis of Mg-SBMOF-1 for efficient separation of Kr and Xe.

Relative Position and Relative Rotation in Supramolecular Systems through the Analysis of the Principal Axes of Inertia: Ferrocene/Cucurbit[7]uril and Ferrocenyl Azide/β-Cyclodextrin Case Studies

Parameters comprising the relative position and relative rotation of molecules can be evaluated when the principal axes of inertia of the entities in a supramolecular association are employed as reference. Such information applies to the characterization and identification of experimental and theoretical nonbonded systems. The parameters are relevant to geometric comparison (for theory and experiment) and, for instance, to monitoring structures by theoretical simulations. This work introduces a software developed to obtain such parameters through the discussion of some intriguing host-guest systems, the ferrocene/cucurbit[7]uril and ferrocenyl azide/β-cyclodextrin. The ideas within this contribution naturally apply to the study of other nonbonded associations beyond host-guest chemistry. A modified version of the software discussed herein serves to obtain user-defined spatial arrangements for two nonbonded entities. Therefore, with a given geometry, for instance, from X-ray data, the parameters can be derived, and with the parameters, from a theoretical perspective, a spatial arrangement can be obtained.

Toward an Understanding of the Formation and Desolvation of Methanol Solvate, and Structure of Methanolysis Product: A Case Study of Nicosulfuron

Nicosulfuron (NS) is a widely used sulfonylurea herbicide because of its high selectivity, broad spectrum of herbicide activity, and excellent performance. In this work, nicosulfuron methanol solvate (NS-MeOH) and [[3-[(Dimethylamino)carbonyl]-2-pyridinyl]sulfonyl]carbamic acid methyl ester (PCM) as a product of methanolysis of NS were obtained. Both of their structures were determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction. A broad range of analytical techniques was applied to characterize the NS-MeOH, such as Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and hot stage microscopy (HSM). Combined with the analysis of the Independent gradient model (IGM), Atom-in-molecules (AIM), and Hirshfeld surface (HS), direct insights into the role of solvent played in the formation of NS-MeOH and the mechanism of solid-to-solid phase transformation of NS-MeOH could be obtained. In addition, the aqueous solubility of NS was improved through the formation of NS-MeOH. A systematic investigation of herbicidal activity of NS and PCM was carried out. It was found that NS and NS-MeOH had similar herbicidal activities at the experimental concentrations while PCM exhibited significantly lower activity. It was suggested that methanolysis of the sulfonylurea bridge in the NS molecule exerted a great influence on the herbicidal activity.

Quantitative decomposition of resonance-assisted hydrogen bond energy in β-diketones into resonance and hydrogen bonding (π- and σ-) components using molecular tailoring and function-based approaches

Using the molecular tailoring and function-based approaches allows one to divide the energy of the O─H⋯O═C resonance-assisted hydrogen bond in a series of the β-diketones into resonance and hydrogen bonding components. The magnitude of the resonance component is assessed as about 6 kcal mol^-1 . This value increases by ca. 1 kcal mol^-1 on going from the weak to strong resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding. The magnitude of the hydrogen bonding component varies in the wide range from 2 to 20 kcal mol^-1 depending on the structure of the β-diketone in question.

The effect of adsorption and grafting on the acidity of [(HSO3)C3C1im]+[Cl]- on the surface of (SiO2)4O2H4 clusters

Both adsorption and graft of active components on the surface of the silica are paramount methods for preparing heterogeneous catalysts. In this paper, the acidity of [(HSO₃)C3C1im]⁺[Cl]^- adsorbed and grafted on the surface of silica clusters was calculated at the level of B3LYP-d3/6-311++g(d, p). The results showed that both methods can enhance the acidity of the ionic liquids (ILs). The hydroxyl group on the carrier surface can increase the acidity, and moreover the acidity increases with the number of hydroxyl group. Besides, geometric parameters, ESP, topology and NBO analysis proved that the ILs acidity on the hydroxyl-free surface was mainly influenced by the interaction between -SO₃ group and cluster surface. And yet the ILs acidity on the hydroxylated surface changes followed with the moderate strength hydrogen bond between the ILs and cluster surface.
