Abstract
Quantum mechanical calculations reveal the origin of diastereo- and enantioselectivities of aldol reactions between aldehydes catalyzed by histidine, and differences between related reactions catalyzed by proline. A stereochemical model that explains both the sense and the high levels of the experimentally observed stereoselectivity is proposed. The computations suggest that both the imidazolium and the carboxylic acid functionalities of histidine are viable hydrogen-bond donors that can stabilize the cyclic aldolization transition state. The stereoselectivity is proposed to arise from minimization of gauche interactions around the forming C-C bond.

Abstract
Correlations between experimental, solution-phase thermodynamic data and calculated gas-phase energies of interaction are investigated for noncovalent halogen bonding interactions between electron-deficient iodo compounds and Lewis bases. The experimental data consist of free energies of interaction spanning roughly 7 kcal/mol; they encompass halogen bonds involving both organic (iodoperfluoroarene or iodoperfluoroalkane) and inorganic (I(2), IBr, ICN) donors with nitrogen- and oxygen-based acceptors and are divided into two sets according to the identity of the solvent in which they were determined (alkanes or CCl(4)). Adiabatic energies of halogen bonding were calculated using a variety of methods, including 22 DFT exchange-correlation functionals, using geometries optimized at the MP2/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. Certain DFT functionals, particularly the B97-1, B97-2, and B98 family, provide outstanding linear correlations with the experimental thermodynamic data, as assessed by a variety of statistical methods.

Abstract
Ab initio calculations were carried out for a benzyl-substituted iminium cation derived from (E)-crotonaldehyde and a chiral imidazolidinone that was developed as an organocatalyst by MacMillan et al. At the MP2 level of theory it is predicted that the phenyl group is close to the iminium moiety in the most stable conformer, suggesting that the cation-π interaction contributes to the stabilization of this conformer. Energy decomposition analyses on model systems indicate that the electrostatic and polarization terms make significant contribution to the attractive interactions between the benzene ring and the iminium cation.

Abstract
A new concept in organocatalysis allowing for the construction of cyclobutanes with four contiguous stereocenters with complete diastereo- and enantiomeric control by a formal [2 + 2]-cycloaddition is presented. The concept is based on simultaneous dual activation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and nitroolefins by amino- and hydrogen-bonding catalysis, respectively. A new bifunctional squaramide-based aminocatalyst has been designed and synthesized in order to enable such an activation strategy. The potential and scope of the reaction are demonstrated, and computational studies which account for the stereochemical outcome are presented.

Abstract
The origin of stereoselectivity of NHC-catalyzed annulation reactions of ynals and stable enols was studied with Density Functional Theory. The data suggest that the C-C bond formation is the stereo-determining step. Only the deprotonated pathway (containing an oxy anion and overall neutral species) was found to give rise to discrimination of the competing stereoisomers. This is due predominantly to electrostatic repulsion of the β-stabilizing enolate functionality with the π-cloud of the aryl group in the NHC-catalyst.
