Abstract
From 2010 to 2015, 73 common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) were diagnosed postmortem with lymphocytic enterocolitis. We used unbiased deep-sequencing to screen the blood of deceased enterocolitis-positive marmosets for viruses. In five out of eight common marmosets with lymphocytic enterocolitis, we discovered a novel pegivirus not present in ten matched, clinically normal controls. The novel virus, which we named Southwest bike trail virus (SOBV), is most closely related (68% nucleotide identity) to a strain of simian pegivirus A isolated from a three-striped night monkey (Aotus trivirgatus). We screened 146 living WNPRC common marmosets for SOBV, finding an overall prevalence of 34% (50/146). Over four years, 85 of these 146 animals died or were euthanized. Histological examination revealed 27 SOBV-positive marmosets from this cohort had lymphocytic enterocolitis, compared to 42 SOBV-negative marmosets, indicating no association between SOBV and disease in this cohort (p = 0.0798). We also detected SOBV in two of 33 (6%) clinically normal marmosets screened during transfer from the New England Primate Research Center, suggesting SOBV could be exerting confounding influences on comparisons of common marmoset studies from multiple colonies.

Abstract
Non-primate hepacivirus (NPHV), equine pegivirus (EPgV) and Theiler's disease associated virus (TDAV) are newly discovered members of two genera in the Flaviviridae family, Hepacivirus and Pegivirus respectively, that include human hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human pegivirus (HPgV). To investigate their epidemiology, persistence and clinical features of infection, large cohorts of horses and other mammalian species were screened for NPHV, EPgV and TDAV viraemia and for past exposure through serological assays for NPHV and EPgV-specific antibodies. NPHV antibodies were detected in 43% of 328 horses screened for antibodies to NS3 and core antibodies, of which three were viraemic by PCR. All five horses that were stablemates of a viraemic horse were seropositive, as was a dog on the same farm. With this single exception, all other species were negative for NPHV antibodies and viraemia: donkeys (n=100), dogs (n=112), cats (n=131), non-human primates (n=164) and humans (n=362). EPgV antibodies to NS3 were detected in 66.5% of horses, including 10 of the 12 horses that had EPgV viraemia. All donkey samples were negative for EPgV antibody and RNA. All horse and donkey samples were negative for TDAV RNA. By comparing viraemia frequencies in horses with and without liver disease, no evidence was obtained that supported an association between active NPHV and EPgV infections with hepatopathy. The study demonstrates that NPHV and EPgV infections are widespread and enzootic in the study horse population and confirms that NPHV and potentially EPgV have higher frequencies of viral clearance than HCV and HPgV infections in humans.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with some B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B cell-NHLs). Patients with HCV infection frequently show co-infections with GB virus C (GBV-C, formerly known as hepatitis G virus), and some studies have suggested a higher incidence of GBV-C infection in patients with B cell-NHLs. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the association between HCV and/or GBV-C infection and B cell-NHLs in different geographic areas. One hundred thirty-seven lymphoma cases and 125 non-lymphoma matched controls were enrolled in an international case-control study conducted in Switzerland (Bellinzona), Spain (Barcelona) and England (Southampton) on samples collected from 2001 to 2002. In Bellinzona (41 cases and 81 controls), the overall prevalence of HCV was 3.3% (4.9% in NHLs), and the overall prevalence of GBV-C was 24% (22% in NHLs). In Barcelona (46 cases and 44 controls), the prevalence of HCV was 10% (8.7% in NHLs) and the prevalence of GBV-C 20% (13% in NHLs). There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of both infections between patients with NHL and controls. In Southampton, 50 NHL cases were analysed, none of them was found to be HCV-positive; therefore, no control group was analysed and GBV-C analysis was not performed, too. Both in Bellinzona and in Barcelona, the seropositivity rate was significantly lower for HCV than for GBV-C, suggesting that their transmission can be independent. The incidence of HCV was significantly higher in Barcelona than that in Bellinzona. This study confirmed the existence of marked geographic differences in the prevalence of HCV in NHL but cannot provide any significant evidence for an association between HCV and/or GBV-C and B-cell NHLs.

Abstract
We investigated whether there was an association between GBV-C viremia and the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in 553 NHL cases and 438 controls from British Columbia, Canada. Cases were aged 20-79, diagnosed between March 2000 and February 2004, and resident in Greater Vancouver or Victoria. Cases and controls were tested for GBV-C RNA by RT-PCR and positive samples were genotyped. Overall, GBV-C RNA was detected in 4.5% of NHL cases vs. 1.8% of controls [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.22-6.69]. The association between GBV-C RNA detection and NHL remained even after individuals with a history of prior transfusion, injection drug use and hepatitis C virus sero-positivity were excluded. GBV-C viremia showed the strongest association with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (adjusted OR = 5.18, 95% CI = 2.06-13.71). Genotyping was performed on 29/33 GBV-C RNA positive individuals; genotypes 2a (n = 22); 2b (n = 5) and 3 (n = 2) were identified, consistent with the distribution of genotypes found in North America. This is the largest case-control study to date associating GBV-C viremia and NHL risk. As GBV-C is known to be transmitted through blood products this may have important implications for blood safety.

Abstract
A number of new hepatitis viruses (G, TT, SEN) were discovered late in the past century. We review the data available in the literature and our own findings suggesting that the new hepatitis G virus (HGV), disclosed in the late 1990s, has been rather well studied. Analysis of many studies dealing with HGV mainly suggests the lymphotropicity of this virus. HGV or GBV-C has been ascertained to influence course and prognosis in the HIV-infected patient. Until now, the frequent presence of GBV-C in coinfections, hematological diseases, and biliary pathology gives no grounds to determine it as an “accidental tourist” that is of no significance. The similarity in properties of GBV-C and hepatitis C virus (HCV) offers the possibility of using HGV, and its induced experimental infection, as a model to study hepatitis C and to develop a hepatitis C vaccine.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine whether human osteoblasts might harbor the hepatitis C virus. We tested for positive-strand and negative-strand (replicative) hepatitis C virus RNA by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, by in situ reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction for intracellular localization of the hepatitis C virus, and by amplicon sequencing in in vitro differentiated mature osteoblasts from STRO-1+ osteoprogenitor cells from patients with chronic hepatitis C and from healthy individuals. We only detected the hepatitis C virus genome in STRO-1+ cells and mature osteoblasts from carriers with chronic hepatitis C, and we found hepatitis C virus negative strands expressed sporadically in these patients. Using in situ hepatitis C virus reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, we determined that the percentage of infected carrier osteoblasts ranged from 8.0-15.3%. These data provide evidence of hepatitis C virus presence and replication in human osteoprogenitors and osteoblasts, which may have important implications for bone allograft processing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study was performed to evaluate the reliability of three reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays, one commercial and two 'homebrew', for GB virus C (GBV-C)/hepatitis G virus (HGV) RNA detection in clinical specimens. We, therefore, investigated the virus prevalence with the method that gave us the best performances. METHODS The commercial assay amplified sequences from the viral 5'-untranslated region (5'UTR) and non-structural 3 (NS3) region. The non-commercial assays 1 and 2 were based on different primers for the 5'UTR consensus sequence. RESULTS The percentage of overall concordance by the three methods was 91.7%, raising to 93.0% when only the two non-commercial methods were compared. Assay 1 showed low sensitivity (57.1% vs. the commercial assay, 58.8% vs. assay 2), with 100% specificity. The commercial assay gave 18 of 54 (33.3%) 'false-negative' results, concordantly negative by the other assays. The prevalence of GBV-C/HGV RNA among the HIV+ patients was 27.0 and 32.6% in HIV/HCV co-infected patients. CONCLUSION These data suggest that assay 2 has higher reliability as compared to the other two methods and may be used for an accurate GBV-C/HGV RNA detection in clinical and epidemiological studies.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis G virus (HGV) belong to the same family of flaviviridea. A causative role of HCV infection in the pathogenesis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has been discussed widely. Little is known about the possible association between NHL and HGV discovered recently. In this study, anti-HCV and HGV-RNA prevalence were investigated in a group of 70 patients with NHL. The results were compared to a control group of 70 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. One patient in each group (1.4%) was found to be anti-HCV-positive; the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Five subjects in the patient group (7.1%) were positive for HGV-RNA, while a single subject was positive in the control group (1.4%); the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Odds ratios for anti-HCV and HGV-RNA were 1 and 5.30, respectively. Our findings suggest that neither HCV nor HGV are causative or contributing factors in the aetiopathogenesis of NHL.

Transmission via the blood-borne route is the commonest mode, although vertical and sexual transmission is well documented. GBV-C/HGV is distributed globally; its prevalence in the general population is 10 fold higher in African countries than in non-African countries. High prevalences of GBV-C/HGV have been found in subjects with frequent parenteral exposure and in groups at high risk of exposure to blood and blood products. The clinical significance of human infection with GBV-C/HGV is currently unclear. The virus can establish both acute and chronic infection and appears to be sensitive to interferon. Only some 12-15% of chronic Non-A, B, C hepatitis cases are infected with GBV-C/HGV. A direct association with liver pathology is still lacking and it is not yet clear as to whether GBV-C/HGV is indeed a hepatotropic virus. Current evidence suggests that the spectrum of association of GBV-C/HGV infection with extrahepatic diseases ranges from haematalogical diseases, aplastic anaemia, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive idiopathic thrombocytopenia and thalassemia, through to common variable immune deficiency and cryoglobunemia.

Abstract
We determined the hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies (anti-HCV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) in a cohort of 68 consecutive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients diagnosed and treated in our institution between December 1997 and March 1999. 27 cases were diagnosed as low-grade, 33 as intermediate-grade, and eight as high-grade NHL. In 35 cases (51.4%) we found evidence of either HCV or HBV infection. Anti-HCV antibodies were found in 20 patients (29.5%) and HBsAg was found in 21 patients (30.8%). In six patients both anti-HCV and HBsAg were present. Anti-HCV were present in 12/27 low-grade NHL cases (44.4%) and in 8/41 intermediate/high-grade (aggressive) NHL cases (19.5%, P < 0.03). HBsAg was found in 10/27 low-grade NHL cases (37%) and in 11/41 aggressive NHL cases (26.8%). Evidence of liver disease, as reflected by elevated aminotransferases or typical alterations at liver biopsy, was present in eight patients. Cryoglobulins were present in six patients, all anti-HCV positive and with low-grade NHL. The prevalence of both HCV antibodies and HBsAg was significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in our NHL cases than in a sample of the general Romanian population, where the prevalence of anti-HCV was 4.9% and that of HBsAg was 6.3%. It is difficult to say whether either HCV or HBV had actually been involved in lymphomagenesis or if alpha-interferon treatment would be effective in this subset of patients.
