Abstract
Conducting polymers like polypyrrole, polyaniline, and polythiophene with nanostructures offers several advantages, such as high conductivity, a conjugated structure, and a large surface area, making them highly desirable for energy storage applications. However, the direct synthesis of conducting polymers with nanostructures poses a challenge. In this study, we employed a hard template method to fabricate polystyrene@polypyrrole (PS@PPy) core-shell nanoparticles. It is important to note that PS itself is a nonconductive material that hinders electron and ion transport, compromising the desired electrochemical properties. To overcome this limitation, the PS cores were removed using organic solvents to create hollow PPy nanospheres. We investigated six different organic solvents (cyclohexane, toluene, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, acetone, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)) for etching the PS cores. The resulting hollow PPy nanospheres showed various nanostructures, including intact, hollow, buckling, and collapsed structures, depending on the thickness of the PPy shell and the organic solvent used. PPy nanospheres synthesized with DMF demonstrated superior electrochemical properties compared to those prepared with other solvents, attributed to their highly effective PS removal efficiency, increased specific surface area, and improved charge transport efficiency. The specific capacitances of PPy nanospheres treated with DMF were as high as 350 F/g at 1 A/g. And the corresponding symmetric supercapacitor demonstrated a maximum energy density of 40 Wh/kg at a power density of 490 W/kg. These findings provide new insights into the synthesis method and energy storage mechanisms of PPy nanoparticles.

Abstract
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have become an important source of microplastics (MPs) contamination and most MPs remain in the sludge inducing potential impacts on sludge disposal. However, little is known about the influence of MPs on the characteristics of sludge, which is essential for sludge disposal. In this study, the dewaterability of activated sludge in response to chronic exposure (60 days) to MPs of different sizes (213.7 nm ~ 4.2 mm) and polymers (polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride) were investigated. Overall, different particle sizes caused more evident effects on sludge dewatering than different polymer types did. Millimeter MPs (~4 mm) dramatically reduced the dewaterability of sludge by 29.6% ~ 47.7%. These effects were mainly caused by the physical crushing of MPs on sludge flocs, except polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-MPs, possibly containing additives, induced toxicity on sludge. Moreover, 100 mg/L nano-size MPs (213 nm) also reduced the dewatering performance of sludge. The potential mechanism is that nano-size MPs inhibited sludge activity and decreased the abundance of key microorganisms, which subsequently altered the composition and spatial distribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and finally impeded sludge dewatering. Our results highlight the impacts of different sizes of MPs on the characteristics of sludge, affecting the final disposal of sludge.

Abstract
Plastic debris, in particular, microplastics and nanoplastics, is becoming an emerging class of pollutants of global concern. Aging can significantly affect the physicochemical properties of plastics, and therefore, may influence the fate, transport, and effects of these materials. Here, we show that aging by UV or O3 exposure drastically enhanced the mobility and contaminant-mobilizing ability of spherical polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs, 487.3 ± 18.3 nm in diameter) in saturated loamy sand. Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek calculations and pH-dependent transport experiments demonstrated that the greater mobility of the aged PSNPs was mainly the result of surface oxidation of the nanoplastics, which increased not only the surface charge negativity, but more importantly, hydrophilicity of the materials. The increased mobility of the aged PSNPs significantly contributed to their elevated contaminant-mobilizing abilities. Moreover, aging of PSNPs enhanced the binding of both nonpolar and polar contaminants, further increasing the contaminant-mobilizing ability of PSNPs. Interestingly, aging enhanced binding of nonpolar versus polar compounds via distinctly different mechanisms: increased binding of nonpolar contaminants (tested using pyrene) was mainly the result of the modification of the polymeric structure of PSNPs that exacerbated slow desorption kinetics; for polar compounds (4-nonylphenol), aging induced changes in surface properties also resulted in irreversible adsorption of contaminants through polar interactions, such as hydrogen bonding. The findings further underline the significant effects of aging on environmental fate and implications of nanoplastics.

Abstract
Fe(3)O(4) is a promising material for arsenic sequestration due to its specific affinity toward arsenic and feasible magnetic separation. How to further increase its adsorption capacity while maintain its low-field separation is an interesting but challenging task. In this study nano-Fe(3)O(4) was successfully coated onto the outer surface of polystyrene (PS) beads of 350-400 nm in diameter by the hetero-coacervation method, and the resulting composite PS-Fe(3)O(4) was characterized using transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and electrophoresis measurement (EM). Its adsorption toward arsenate was investigated as a function of solution pH, arsenic concentration, contact time, and coexisting anions. The maximum adsorption capacity of PS-Fe(3)O(4) was 139.3mg/g Fe(3)O(4), 77.7% greater than that of bulky Fe(3)O(4). More attractively, it can be readily separated from water under a low magnetic field (<0.035 T). Continuous adsorption-desorption cyclic results demonstrated that arsenate-loaded PS-Fe(3)O(4) can be effectively regenerated by NaOH solution, and the regenerated composite beads could be employed for repeated use without significant capacity loss, indicating that nano-Fe(3)O(4) was steadily coated onto the surface of PS beads. Generally, PS beads could be employed as a promising host to fabricate efficient composites originated from Fe(3)O(4) or other nanoparticles for environmental remediation.

Abstract
Polyaniline (PANI)/Au composite hollow spheres were successfully synthesized using polystyrene/sulfonated polystyrene core/shell gel particle templates. The PANI shell thickness and the number of Au nanoparticles decorating the PANI could be controlled effectively by adjusting the experimental conditions. The morphology, composition, and optical properties of the resulting products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra. It was found that the electrical conductivity of the PANI/Au composite hollow spheres was more than 3 times higher than that of the pure PANI hollow spheres. Furthermore, PANI/Au composites were immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and applied to construct a sensor. The obtained PANI/Au-modified GCEs showed one pair of redox peaks and high catalytic activity for the oxidation of dopamine. The possible formation mechanism of the PANI/Au composite hollow spheres was also discussed.

Abstract
The monodisperse, poly(glycidylmethacrylate-co-ethylenedimethacrylate) beads with macroporous in the range of 8.0-12.0 microm were prepared by a single-step swelling and polymerization method. The seed particles prepared by dispersion polymerization exhibited good absorption of the monomer phase. The pore size distribution of the beads was evaluated by gel permeation chromatography and mercury instrusion method. Based on this media, a hydrophobic interaction chromatographic (HIC) stationary phase for HPLC was synthesized by a new chemically modified method. The prepared resin has advantages for biopolymer separation, high column efficiency, low column backpressure, high protein mass recovery and good resolution for proteins. The dynamic protein loading capacity of the synthesized HIC packings was 40.0 mg/ml. Six proteins were fast separated in less than 8.0 min using the synthesized HIC stationary phase. The HIC resin was firstly used for the purification and simultaneous renaturation of recombinant human interferon-gamma (rhIFN-gamma) in the extract solution containing 7.0 mol/l guanidine hydrochloride with only one step. The purity and specific bioactivity of the purified of rhIFN-gamma was found more than 95% and 1.3 x 10(8) IU/mg, respectively.

Abstract
The latest developments and in particular important synthetic aspects for the preparation of modern HPLC supports are reviewed. In this context, the chemistry of inorganic supports based on silica, zirconia, titania or aluminum oxide as well as of organic supports based on poly(styrene-divinylbenzene), acrylates, methacrylates and other, more specialized polymers is covered. Special consideration is given to modern approaches such as sol-gel technology, molecular imprinting, perfusion chromatography, the preparation of monolithic separation media as well as to organic HPLC supports prepared by new polymer technologies such as ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Synthetic particularities relevant for the corresponding applications are outlined.
