Abstract
Rh(III) and Ru(II) complexes, [RhCl2(κ4-N2N'P-L)][SbF6] (1) and [RuCl2(κ4-N2N'P-L)] (2), were synthesised using the tetradentate ligand L (L=N,N-bis[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]methanamine). In each case only one diastereomer is detected, featuring cis-disposed pyridine groups. The chloride ligand trans to pyridine can be selectively abstracted by AgSbF6, with the ruthenium complex (2) reacting more readily at room temperature compared to the rhodium complex (1) which requires elevated temperatures. Rhodium complexes avoid the second chloride abstraction, whereas ruthenium complexes can form the chiral bisacetonitrile complex [Ru(κ4-N2N'P-L)(NCMe)2][SbF6]2 (5) upon corresponding treatment with AgSbF6. The complex [RhCl2(κ4-N2N'P-L)][SbF6] (1) has also been used to synthesise polymetallic species, such as the tetrametallic complex [{RhCl2(κ4-N2N'P-L)}2(μ-Ag)2][SbF6]4 (6) which was formed with complete diastereoselectivity and chiral molecular self-recognition. In addition, a stable bimetallic mixed-valence complex [{Rh(κ4-N2N'P-L)}{Rh(COD)}(μ-Cl)2][SbF6]2 (7) (COD=cyclooctadiene) was synthesised. These results highlight the significant differences in chloride lability between Rh3+ and Ru2+ complexes and demonstrate the potential for complexes to act as catalyst precursors and ligands in further chemistry applications.

Abstract
The ability of the imine PyCH═N-CH2Py (Py = 2-pyridyl, bpi) to behave as a heteroditopic ligand, which is suitable for creating two separate compartments to host metals in different oxidation states, has been developed by studying the reactions of the mixed-valence complexes [(cod)M-Ι(μ-bpi)MΙ(cod)] (M = Rh, Ir) with [M'(Cl)2(PPh3)2] (M' = Pd, Ni). The results depend on the molar ratio of the reagents used (1:1 or 1:2) to give the heterometallic complexes {d10-M',d8-M}-[(PPh3)(Cl)M'0(μ-bpi)MΙ(cod)] (Pd,Rh, 4; Pd,Ir, 5; Ni,Rh, 8; Ni,Ir, 9) and the two-electron mixed-valent compounds [(PPh3)(Cl)M'0(μ-bpi)M'ΙΙ(Cl)] (M' = Ni, 10; Pd, 11), respectively. A redox process occurs in the replacement of the low-valent [(cod)M-I] fragment, whereas the exchange of the [(cod)MI] fragment is redox-neutral. The metal with a d8 configuration in the products exhibits a square-planar geometry coordinated to two (Rh/Ir) or three (Ni/Pd) nitrogen atoms of the bridging bpi ligand. Conversely, the metal with a d10 configuration adopts trigonal-planar geometries, π-bonded to the imine C═N bond. The isolated complexes 4/5 and 10/11, along with the hypothetical heterometallic Pd,Ni compound (12), were studied by DFT methods. Additionally, the T-shaped moiety 'M'ΙΙ(PPh3)(Cl)(η1-CH-N(bpi))', stabilized by a secondary γ-agostic interaction, and the 'M'II(Cl)(κ3N-bpi)' fragment was found to be accessible redoxomers of complexes 10 and 11 by DFT calculations.

Crystallographic and structural characterization of heterometallic platinum compounds. Part II. Heterobinuclear Pt compounds with Pt⋯M (M = transition or lantanide metal) > 3.0 Å. OPEN CHEM 2012. Abstract
AbstractThis review covers almost two hundred and twenty heterobinuclear platinum compounds in which Pt⋯M separation is over 3.0 Å. The M is a transition metal (Cu, Ag, Au, Ti, V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni and Pd). There is an example of a lanthanide, Yb and a actinide, U. The Pt atom has oxidation numbers 0, +2 and +4. The Pt coordination geometries include trigonal planar Pt(0); square planar Pt(II); trigonal bipyramidal, and pseudo octahedral Pt(IV), with the most frequent being square planar. The most common ligands for Pt are P and C donor atoms, as well as a chlorine atom. The Pt — Ag distance of 3.002(1) Å is the shortest found in this series. There are examples which contain two crystallographically independent molecules, which differ mostly by degree of distortion and even one unique example, which contains eight such molecules. These are examples of distortion isomerism. Factors affecting bond lengths and angles are discussed and some ambiguities in coordination polyhedral are outlined.

Abstract
2-(2'-Pyridyl)-3,4,5,6-tetraphenylpyridine 2 (HL), a ligand with both N,N-bidentate and N,N,C-terdentate coordination potential, was prepared in excellent yield by the Diels-Alder [2+4] cycloaddition of 2-cyanopyridine and tetraphenylcyclopentadien-1-one. Monometallic Pd(II) and Rh(III) complexes were formed which exhibit both types of ligand coordination (trans-[RhCl2(L)(NCMe)] 3, cis-[RhCl(L)(NCMe)2]PF6, cis-[RhCl2(HL)2]PF6 6, [RhCl(L)(HL)]PF6 7, [Rh(L)2]PF6 8, [Pd(OAc)(L)] 9 and [Pd(eta3-methallyl)(HL)]PF6) 10. The molecular structures of the ligand and six complexes, including the chloro-bridged dimer [RhCl(L)(micro-Cl)]2 5, were obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Reaction of the aryl-monophosphine ligand alpha(2)-(diisopropylphosphino)isodurene (1) with the Rh(I) precursor [Rh(coe)(2)(acetone)(2)]BF(4) (coe=cyclooctene) in different solvents yielded complexes of all three common oxidation states of rhodium, depending on the solvent used. When the reaction was carried out in methanol a cyclometalated, solvent-stabilized Rh(III) alkyl-hydride complex (2) was obtained. However, when the reaction was carried out in acetone or dichloromethane a dinuclear eta(6)-arene Rh(II) complex (5) was obtained in the absence of added redox reagents. Moreover, when acetonitrile was added to a solution of either the Rh(II) or Rh(III) complexes, a new solvent-stabilized, noncyclometalated Rh(I) complex (6) was obtained. In this report we describe the different complexes, which were fully characterized, and probe the processes behind the remarkable solvent effect observed.

Abstract
Several methods to synthesize bimetallic complexes in which two different metal fragments are connected by halide bridges are described. Using simple starting materials a large pool of structurally defined bimetallic complexes with unique chemical reactivities can be prepared in short time. Applications in organometallic synthesis and homogeneous catalysis are discussed.
