Isostructurality of quinoxaline crystal phases: the interplay of weak hydrogen bonds and halogen bonding

Creation of isostructural systems is a balance between thermodynamic and kinetic factors, shown by a set of substituted quinoxalines, where the lighter halogens form a set of metastable isostructural crystals, different to the heavy substitutions.

A mechanophysical phase transition provides a dramatic example of colour polymorphism: the tribochromism of a substituted tri(methylene)tetrahydrofuran-2-one

Background

Derivatives of fulgides have been shown to have interesting photochromic properties. We have synthesised a number of such derivatives and have found, in some cases, that crystals can be made to change colour on crushing, a phenomenon we have termed “tribochromism”. We have studied a number of derivatives by X-ray crystallography, to see if the colour is linked to molecular structure or crystal packing, or both, and our structural results have been supported by calculation of molecular and lattice energies.

Results

A number of 5-dicyanomethylene-4-diphenylmethylene-3-disubstitutedmethylene-tetrahydrofuran-2-one compounds have been prepared and structurally characterised. The compounds are obtained as yellow or dark red crystals, or, in one case, both. In two cases where yellow crystals were obtained, we found that crushing the crystals gave a deep red powder. Structure determinations, including those of the one compound which gave both coloured forms, depending on crystallisation conditions, showed that the yellow crystals contained molecules in which the structure comprised a folded conformation at the diphenylmethylene site, whilst the red crystals contained molecules in a twisted conformation at this site. Lattice energy and molecular conformation energies were calculated for all molecules, and showed that the conformational energy of the molecule in structure IIIa (yellow) is marginally higher, and the conformation thus less stable, than that of the molecule in structure IIIb (red). However, the van der Waals energy for crystal structure IIIa, is slightly stronger than that of structure IIIb – which may be viewed as a hint of a metastable packing preference for IIIa, overcome by the contribution of a more stabilising Coulomb energy to the overall more favourable lattice energy of structure IIIb.

Conclusions

Our studies have shown that the crystal colour is correlated with one of two molecular conformations which are different in energy, but that the less stable conformation can be stabilised by its host crystal lattice.

Suspensions of organic microcrystals produced in the presence of polymers: diversity of UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence properties according to the preparation conditions

Free-standing microcrystals of an organic fluorescent dye, specifically, 4-n-octylamino-7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole, were prepared using a solvent-exchange process at room temperature, in the presence of polymers used as additives. Parameters such as the dye concentration, the nature and concentration of the polymer, and the pH of the solution were varied. Six samples of microcrystals were therefore obtained and characterized by fluorescence microscopy and by electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). They differed by their content in microcrystals, the shape and size of which depends strongly on experimental conditions. Curiously, the UV/vis absorption spectra of the microcrystal suspensions were very different from one sample to another. As a result the emission spectra were also varied. The diversity of the optical response obtained was attributed to the presence of several dye populations in the microcrystal suspensions. A distinction was made between the intrinsic spectral properties of the microcrystals and artifacts due to the presence of the additives.

The aromatic ring systems in the title compound, C(14)H(10)N(2)O, form a dihedral angle of 63.8 (1)°, resulting in an opening up of the ether-O atom angle to 118.2 (1)°.

Conformational flexibility and hydrogen-bonding patterns of the neotame molecule in its various solid forms

The conformational flexibility and the molecular packing patterns of the neotame molecule in its various crystal forms, including neotame monohydrate, methanol solvate, ethanol solvate, benzene solvate, and anhydrate polymorph G, are analyzed in this work. The Cerius2 molecular modeling program with the Dreiding 2.21 force field was employed to calculate the most stable conformations of neotame molecules in the gaseous state and to analyze the conformations of the neotame molecule in its various crystal forms. Using graph set analysis, the hydrogen bond patterns of these crystal forms were compared. The neotame molecule takes different conformations in its crystal forms and in the free gaseous state. Cerius2 found 10 conformers with lower conformational energies than those in the actual crystal structures, which represent an energetic compromise. The relatively large differences between the energies of the conformers indicate the necessity for rewriting or customizing the force field for neotame. The hydrogen bonding patterns of the neotame methanol and ethanol solvates are identical, but different from those of the other three forms, which also differ from each other. The neotame molecule in its various crystal forms takes different conformations that differ from those in the gaseous state because of the influence of crystal packing. The intramolecular ring, S5, is present in all the crystal forms. The following hydrogen bonding patterns occur in some of the crystal forms: diad, D; intramolecular rings, S(6) and S(7); chains, C(5) and C(6); and an intermolecular ring, R2(2)(12).
