Abstract
A post-functionalization route to tris(dipyrrinato) metal complexes is presented giving access to a range of new complexes relevant in the context of medicinal inorganic chemistry. A pentafluorophenyl group in the meso-position of the dipyrrin ligand serves as an anchor for the connection with alcohols and thiocarbohydrates. The photochemotherapeutic activity of the complexes has been assessed in cellular assays with tumor cell lines and against the Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. Finally, it is shown that this post-functionalization is also applicable to other dipyrrinato metal complexes.

Abstract
The thorough study of fluorinated benzoates of lanthanides (Eu, Tb, Nd, Er, Yb, Gd, La, Lu) is reported. Their composition in single crystal and powder state revealed two predominant structural motifs. An in-depth luminescence study has been performed on the reported fluorobenzoates, showing, that terbium and europium complexes in solid state possess high luminescence intensity with the quantum yield of up to 69 %. High solubility in most organic solvents, as well as in water, combined with the high luminescence intensity in water solution and non-toxicity allowed the testing of europium complexes as bioprobes in cellulo. Among all tested fluorobenzoates, europium 2-fluorobenzoate dihydrate combined the best luminescent properties, thermodynamic stability, aqueous solubility, and non-toxicity, and was shown to be a viable bio-marker.

Abstract
The synthesis of two new Ir(III) complexes which are effectively isostructural with well-established [Ru(NN)2(dppz)](2+) systems is reported (dppz=dipyridophenazine; NN=2,2'-bipyridyl, or 1,10-phenanthroline). One of these Ir(III) complexes is tricationic and has a conventional N6 coordination sphere. The second dicationic complex has a N5C coordination sphere, incorporating a cyclometalated analogue of the dppz ligand. Both complexes show good water solubility. Experimental and computational studies show that the photoexcited states of the two complexes are very different from each other and also differ from their Ru(II) analogues. Both of the complexes bind to duplex DNA with affinities that are two orders of magnitude higher than previously reported Ir(dppz)-based systems and are comparable with Ru(II)(dppz) analogues.

Abstract
Two new tetracationic hetero-bimetallacycles, compounds 4 and 5, have been constructed from an N,N'-bis(4-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)phenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide ligand (1), and cis-blocked complexes [M(dppf)(OTf)2 ] (dppf=1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; OTf=trifluoromethanesulfonate; M=Pd (2), Pt (3)) in CH3 NO2 /CH2 Cl2 (1:1) solvent. Both complexes were isolated with adequate yields as triflate salts and were then characterized using (1) H, (13) C, and (31) P NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and high-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry (HR-ESMS). The molecular structure of 4 was determined by molecular mechanics force-field calculations. The cytotoxic effect of both new complexes were analyzed against T98G (brain tumor), KB (head and neck cancer), SNU-80 (thyroid cancer), and HEK-293 non-malignant cell lines. The cytotoxicity of complexes 4 and 5 were found to be considerably more effective against cancer cells than reference drug cisplatin. Annexin-V/PI staining, caspase-3/7 activity, and the reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential justify a significant level of apoptosis in complex-treated cells.

Abstract
Iridium(III) complexes of the type [Ir(η(5) -C5 Me5 )Cl2 {Ph2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 S(O)x Ph-κP}] (x=0-2; 1-3) and [Ir(η(5) -C5 Me5 )Cl{Ph2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 S(O)x Ph-κP,κS}][PF6 ] (x=0-1; 4 and 5) with 3-(diphenylphosphino)propyl phenyl sulfide, sulfoxide, and sulfone ligands Ph2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 S(O)x Ph were designed, synthesized, and characterized fully, including X-ray diffraction analyses for complexes 3 and 4. In vitro studies against human thyroid carcinoma (8505C), submandibular carcinoma (A253), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), colon adenocarcinoma (SW480), and melanoma (518A2) cell lines provided evidence for the high biological potential of the neutral and cationic iridium(III) complexes. Neutral iridium(III) complex 5 proved to be the most active, with IC50 values up to about 0.1 μM, representing activities of up to one order of magnitude higher than cisplatin. Using 8505C cells, apoptosis was shown to be the main mechanism through which complex 5 exerts its tumoricidal action. The described iridium(III) complexes represent potential leads in the search for novel metal-based anticancer agents.

Abstract
A new disubstituted terpyridine ligand and the corresponding tri-copper(II) complex have been prepared and characterised. The binding affinity and binding mode of this tri-copper complex (as well as the previously reported mono- and di-copper analogues) towards duplex DNA were determined by using UV/Vis spectroscopic titrations and fluorescent indicator displacement (FID) assays. These studies showed the three complexes to bind moderately (in the order of 10(4) M(-1)) to duplex DNA (ct-DNA and a 26-mer sequence). Furthermore, the number of copper centres and the nature of the substituents were found to play a significant role in defining the binding mode (intercalative or groove binding). The nuclease potential of the three complexes was investigated by using circular plasmid DNA as a substrate and analysing the products by agarose-gel electrophoresis. The cleaving activity was found to be dependent on the number of copper centres present (cleaving potency was in the order: tri-copper>di-copper>mono-copper). Interestingly, the tri-copper complex was able to cleave DNA without the need of external co-reductants. As this complex displayed the most promising nuclease properties, cell-based studies were carried out to establish if there was a direct link between DNA cleavage and cellular toxicity. The tri-copper complex displayed high cytotoxicity against four cancer cell lines. Of particular interest was that it displayed high cytotoxicity against the cisplatin-resistant MOLT-4 leukaemia cell line. Cellular uptake studies showed that the tri-copper complex was able to enter the cell and more importantly localise in the nucleus. Immunoblotting analysis (used to monitor changes in protein levels related to the DNA damage response pathway) and DNA-flow cytometric studies suggested that this tri-copper(II) complex is able to induce cellular DNA damage.

Abstract
It was shown that bismuth(III)hexanoate (Bi(OHex)3) efficiently and selectively catalyzes the addition of tetra(ethylene glycol) (TEG) onto the isocyanate group of 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane, IPTES. delta-Valerolactone (deltaVL), epsilon-caprolactone (epsilonCL) and D,L-lactide were polymerized by initiation with TEG/Bi(OHex)3. The resulting telechelic polyesters were in situ functionalized with IPTES or with 3-isocyanatopropyl trimethoxysilane, IPTMS. Using pentaerythritol as co-initiator of Bi(OHex)3 and epsilonCL as monomer, star-shaped polylactones having triethylsilyl end-groups were synthesized in a one-pot-procedure. All functionalized polyesters were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Bi(OHex)3 is a remarkable initiator and catalyst, because of its extraordinary low toxicity.

Abstract
To examine the effect of leaving group and trans influence on the general reactivity of polynuclear platinum antitumor agents we investigated substitution of the chloride leaving groups with nitrite ion, which forms strong bonds to Pt. It was of interest to explore whether nitrite could be used to modulate biological properties of these agents, in particular the deactivating reactions that occur on reaction with S-nucleophiles, involving loss of the linking diamine under the trans influence of sulfur. Reported herein is a study of the synthesis, aquation, DNA binding and reactions with glutathione (GSH), methionine (Met) and acetylmethione (AcMet) of nitrito derivatives of di- and trinuclear platinum antitumor compounds: [{trans-PtNO(2)(NH(3))(2)}(2)(mu-NH(2)(CH(2))(6)NH(2))](NO(3))(2) (1-NO(2)) and [{trans-PtNO(2)(NH(3))(2)}(2)(mu-trans-Pt(NH(3))(2){NH(2)(CH(2))(6)NH(2)}(2))](NO(3))(4) (1'-NO(2)). {(1)H,(15)N}-HSQC NMR studies revealed that 1-NO(2) is inert to aquation reactions, even after prolonged incubation at physiological pH. Monitoring of the interaction of 1-NO(2) with the duplex 5'-d(ATATGTACATAT)(2) (I) showed only unreacted complex, consistent with activation by aquation being a requirement for covalent DNA binding. The reaction of 1-NO(2) with GSH was studied by (1)H, (195)Pt, (15)N and {(1)H,(15)N}-HSQC NMR spectroscopy. For the parent dichlorido compounds (1 and 1') substitution of chloride by GS(-) leads to drug degradation involving liberation of the diamine linker. While the same final products trans-[Pt(SG)(2)(NH(3))(2)] (5) and trans-[{Pt(SG)(NH(3))(2)}(2)-mu-SG] (6) are formed, different mechanisms are involved, consistent with the trans influence NO(2)(-) > Cl(-); the half-life is slightly longer for 1-NO(2) (1.8 h) compared with 1 (1.3 h). Identification of the intermediate trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2)(NO(2))(SG)] (4) shows that the nitrito group remains coordinated while the linker amine is substituted by coordination of GS(-), and then trans labilization of the nitrito group occurs leading to 5 and 6. Reaction of the trinuclear 1'-NO(2) with GSH follows essentially the same reaction pathway. Reaction of 1-NO(2) with Met and AcMet is much slower and only 20 % liberated amine was observed after reaction with Met for 24 h at 37 degrees C. The final product from reaction with AcMet is trans-[Pt(NH(3))(2)(NO(2))(AcMet)], as in this case coordination of the S-nucleophile does not lead to trans labilization of the nitrito group.

Abstract
An oxo-bridged diruthenium(III) complex containing pyrazolato and pyrazole ligands is stable against ascorbic-acid reduction, induces apoptosis (60%, 48 h) against HeLa cells at 10 microM level and exhibits promising anti-angiogenic activity at its sub-cytotoxic concentrations. Other mononuclear ruthenium(III) complexes containing pyrazole ligands [Ru(pz)(4)X(2)](+) exhibit dual anti-angiogenic and cytotoxic properties.
