Abstract
Dihydro[1,3]oxazines are an important class of heterocyclic compounds having a
wide range of biological and material properties. Medicinally, they possess diverse pharmacological
activities, such as bactericidal, fungicidal, microbiocidal, antitumor, anti-HIV, and
anti-inflammatory agents. Apart from being biologically active, they are materially useful for
making polybenzoxazines. Polybenzoxazines are a novel class of non-conjugated thermosetting
materials that belong to the family of addition-curable phenolic resins. They have lucrative
properties such as small shrinkage in curing, low water absorption, good thermal stability,
and there is no release of volatile materials during cure, and no need for catalyst and inexpensive
raw materials. Further, the flexibility in designing a monomer gives polybenzoxazines
an additional edge over ordinary phenolic resins. This review briefly describes the syntheses,
including eco-friendly strategies, and biological and material significance of various dihydro[1,3]oxazine
derivatives.

Abstract
A series of benzoxazine monomer supramolecules with different substituted groups on their benzene ring was prepared with a Mannich reaction and characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR and MS. The obtained products were 3,4-dihydro-3-(2'-hydroxyethylene)-6-methyl-2H-benzoxazine (BM1), 3,4-dihydro-3-(2'-hydroxyethylene)-6-ethyl-2H-benz-oxazine (BM2), and 3,4-dihydro-3-(2'-hydroxyethylene)-6-methoxy-2H-benzoxazine (BM3). The efficiency of alkali metal ion extraction from the products was determined with Pedersen's technique, while the complexation of the Ce(III) ion was confirmed by the Job's and the mole ratio methods. The evidence of complex formation between benzoxazine monomers and Ce(III) ions was obtained with FTIR and a computational simulation. Single phase ceria (CeO₂) as observed with XRD was successfully prepared by calcinating the Ce(III)-benzoxazine monomer complexes at 600 °C for 2 h. In addition, the geometry of the ceria nanoparticles confirmed by TEM is spherical, with an average diameter of 10-20 nm.

Abstract
The Mannich reaction is detailed, which was carried out on benzoxazine dimers under various conditions, that is, temperature, reaction time, and solvents. Against our expectation, in any condition, instead of generating a disubstitution oxazine compound, the reaction gives a product with only a single oxazine ring, a mono-oxazine benzoxazine dimer, as characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 2D-NMR (1H-1H COSY, 1H-13C HMQC, and 1H-13C HMBC), and EA. The asymmetrical reaction is found to be based on the original structure of the benzoxazine dimer which has two phenol rings in a different stability as clarified by X-ray structure analysis of the single crystal. All types of benzoxazine dimers indicate the specific structure with a pair of inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The bond distance indicates that the intramolecular hydrogen bonding is very strong, while the packing structure emphasizes the high stability of the dimer unit and implies the deactivation of one phenol ring in the benzoxazine dimer. In this contribution, we demonstrate one of the quite rare examples, showing how the stereostructure of the reactant molecule is an important factor to control the reaction and give an asymmetric product which we never expected when considering only the chemical formula.
