Abstract
Herein we demonstrate that, based on the creation of dynamic nanospaces in solution by highly charged positive coordination cage of [Pd6 (RuL3 )8 ]28+ , multirole and multi-way cage-confined catalysis is accomplishable for versatile functions and anomalous reactivities with the aid of the biomimetic cage effect. The high cationic-host charges drive partial deprotonation of 24 imidazole-NHs on cage sphere alike imidazole-residuals in proteins, generating amphoteric heterogeneity in solution to enforce effective cavity-basicity against solution-acidity. Synergistic actions arisen from cage hydrophobicity, host-guest electrostatic interactions and imidazole-N coordination facilitate C(sp)-H activation and carbanionic intermediate stabilization of terminal alkynes to achieve unusual H/D-exchange and Glaser coupling under acidic conditions, and enable phase transfers of water-insoluble substrates/products/co-catalysts to make immiscible-phase and bi-phase catalysis feasible, thus providing a useful catalytic protocol to combine merits from homogeneous, heterogeneous, enzymatic and phase transfer catalysis.

Abstract
We prepared conceptually novel, fully rigid, spiro compact electron donor (Rhodamine B, lactam form, RB)/acceptor (naphthalimide; NI) orthogonal dyad to attain the long‐lived triplet charge‐transfer (3CT) state, based on the electron spin control using spin‐orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT‐ISC). Transient absorption (TA) spectra indicate the first charge separation (CS) takes place within 2.5 ps, subsequent SOCT‐ISC takes 8 ns to produce the 3NI* state. Then the slow secondary CS (125 ns) gives the long‐lived 3CT state (0.94 μs in deaerated n‐hexane) with high energy level (ca. 2.12 eV). The cascade photophysical processes of the dyad upon photoexcitation are summarized as 1NI*→1CT→3NI*→3CT. With time‐resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra, an EEEAAA electron‐spin polarization pattern was observed for the naphthalimide‐localized triplet state. Our spiro compact dyad structure and the electron spin‐control approach is different to previous methods for which invoking transition‐metal coordination or chromophores with intrinsic ISC ability is mandatory.

Abstract
Oxoverdazyl (Vz) radical units were covalently linked to the naphthalenediimide (NDI) chromophore to study the effect of the radical on the photophysical properties, especially the radical enhanced intersystem crossing (REISC), which is a promising approach to develop heavy-atom-free triplet photosensitizers. Rigid phenyl or ethynylphenyl linkers between the two moieties were used, thus REISC and formation of doublet (D1 , total spin quantum number S=1/2) and quartet states (Q1 , S=3/2) are anticipated. The photophysical properties of the dyads were studied with steady-state and femtosecond/nanosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopies and DFT computations. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show a fast electron transfer (<150 fs), and ISC (ca. 1.4-1.85 ps) is induced by charge recombination (CR, in toluene). Nanosecond transient absorption spectra demonstrated a biexponential decay of the triplet state of the NDI moiety. The fast component (lifetime: 50 ns; population ratio: 80 %) is assigned to the D1 →D0 decay, and the slow decay component (2.0 μs; 20 %) to the Q1 →D0 ISC. DFT computations indicated ferromagnetic interactions between the radical and chromophore (J=0.07-0.13 eV). Reversible formation of the radical anion of the NDI moiety by photoreduction of the radical-NDI dyads in the presence of sacrificial electron donor triethanolamine (TEOA) is achieved. This work is useful for design of new triplet photosensitizers based on the REISC effect.

Abstract
The equilibrium geometries, IR-spectra and transition mechanism of intramolecular hydrogen-bonded methyl salicylate in excited state were studied using DFT and TDDFT with 6-31++G (d, p) basis set. The length of hydrogen bond OH⋯OC is decreased from 1.73 Å in the ground state to 1.41 and 1.69 Å in the excited S1 and S3 states. The increase of bond length for HO and CO group also indicates that in excited state the hydrogen bond OH⋯OC is strengthened. IR spectra show HO and CO stretching bands are strongly redshifted by 1387 and 67 cm(-1) in the excited S1 and S3 states comparing to the ground state. The excitation energy and the absorption spectrum show the S3 state is the main excited state of the low-lying excited states. By analyzing the frontier molecular orbitals, the transition from the ground state to the excited S1 and S3 states was predicted to be the π→π∗ mode.

Abstract
Ground- and excited-state magnetic properties of recently characterized pi-conjugated photomagnetic organic molecules are analyzed by the means of density functional theory (DFT). The systems under investigation are made up of an anthracene (An) unit primarily acting as a photosensitizer (P), one or two iminonitroxyl (IN) or oxoverdazyl (OV) stable organic radical(s) as the dangling spin carrier(s) (SC), and intervening phenylene connector(s) (B). The magnetic behavior of these multicomponent systems, represented here by the Heisenberg-Dirac magnetic exchange coupling (J), as well as the EPR observables (g tensors and isotropic A values), are accurately modeled and rationalized by using our DFT approach. As the capability to quantitatively assess intramolecular exchange coupling J in the excited state makes it possible to undertake rational optimization of photomagnetic systems, DFT was subsequently used to model new compounds exhibiting different connection schemes for their functional components (P, B, SC). We show in the present work that it is worthwhile considering the triplet state of anthracene, that is, P when promoted in its lowest photoexcited state, as a full magnetic site in the same capacity as the remote SCs. This framework allows us to accurately account for the interplay between transient ((3)An) and persistent (IN, OV) spin carriers, which magnetically couple according to a sole polarization mechanism essentially supported by phenyl connector(s). From our theoretical investigations of photoinduced spin alignment, some general rules are proposed and validated. Relying on the analysis of spin-density maps, they allow us to predict the magnetic behavior of purely organic magnets in both the ground and the excited states. Finally, the notion of photomagnetic molecular devices (PMMDs) is derived and potential application towards molecular spintronics disclosed.
