Abstract
Chirality is a fundamental characteristic of nature. Expanded porphyrinoids and their analogues offer an attractive platform for delving into the intricacies of chirality. Expanded porphyrinoids comprise pyrrolic macrocycles and related heterocyclic systems. As a class, expanded porphyrinoids are widely recognized for their flexible structural features, nontrivial coordination capabilities, and intriguing optical and electronic properties. With limited exceptions, their inherent conformational flexibility coupled with a low racemization barrier allows for the facile interchange between enantiomers. As a result, achieving the effective chiral resolution of individual enantiomers and the subsequent exploration of their chiroptical properties represents a significant challenge. This review summarizes strategies used to realize the chiral resolution of expanded porphyrinoids and the understanding of intrinsic chiroptical properties that has emerged from these separation efforts. It is our hope that this review will serve not only to codify our current understanding of chiral expanded porphyrinoids, but also inspire advances in the generalized area of chiral functional materials.

Abstract
A non-aromatic expanded carbaporphyrinoid, incorporating two built-in 2,7-pyrenylene moieties was synthesized. The intrinsically labile structure was demonstrated by proton-triggered conformational changes between the figure-of-eight and quasi-Möbius conformers. Upon treatment with Pd(OAc)2 , the reaction produces two bis-PdII complexes with distinct coordination modes. Metal coordination serves to fix the macrocyclic frameworks with the net result that both bis-PdII complexes could be resolved by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a chiral stationary phase. The isolated enantiomers showed persistent chiroptical properties as evidenced by the intense response in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and the record high absorption dissymmetry factors (gabs of up to 0.038) seen in the near-infrared spectral region. Moreover, the mutual interconversion of these two PdII complexes was found to be stereospecific and to favor the more stable isomers under weakly acidic conditions.

Abstract
A simple chiral dopant molecule (R)-1 with both rod- and arch-like units was prepared, and extremely large helical twisting powers (+123 to +228 μm(-1)) in nematic liquid crystal phases were achieved. We have demonstrated that the introduction of an arch-like unit in addition to rod-like units is highly effective in controlling the helical molecular alignment. As an application of the dopant, induction of blue phases by addition of a small amount of it was achieved.

Abstract
Multifunctional π-expanded macrocyclic oligothiophene 6-mer 1, as well as 9- (2) and 12-mers (3), was synthesized using a McMurry coupling reaction as the key step. The 6-mer 1 was converted to cyclo[6](2,5-thienylene-ethynylene) (4) by using a bromination-dehydrobromination procedure. From X-ray analysis, the crystal structures of nonplanar 1 and round-shaped 2 and 4 were elucidated. STM showed that 4 formed a self-assembled monolayer at the liquid/solid interface to produce a hexagonal porous network. Chemical oxidation of 1, 2, and 4 with 1 and 2 equiv of Fe(ClO4)3 produced 1(•+) and 1(2+), 2(•+) and 2(2+), and 4(•+) and 4(2+), respectively. Although oligothiophene radical cations containing β,β-disubstituted thiophenes usually do not form π-dimers, 4(•+) clearly formed a π-dimer owing to its planar, round shape. As for the dications of 1, 2, and 4, 1(2+), which has 34π-electrons, exhibited a large diatropic ring current effect, whereas 34π dication 4(2+) only showed a medium diatropic ring current effect. In contrast to 1(2+) and 4(2+), 52π dication 2(2+) had biradical cationic character instead of Hückel-type cyclic conjugation. Interestingly, 6-mer 1 showed polymorphism and unusual melting point behavior due to the number of stable conformations in the solid state. Single crystals of 1 melted at 176 °C, whereas an amorphous film of 1 crystallized in the temperature range of 80-83 °C to form a lamellarly stacked microcrystalline film, which melted at 139 °C. The polymorphism of 1 was applied to either fluorescence switching or switching of field effect transistor (FET) activity and electrical conductivity.

Abstract
A series of four dichromophoric rigid macrocycles 6a-6d, two with diphenyloligothiophene chromophores, the other two with more electron-rich diphenyl-EDOT or diphenyl-bis-EDOT chromophores, have been synthesized. The absorption spectrum of the diphenyl-bis-EDOT based macrocycle 6d displayed the most pronounced vibronic resolution with a well-resolved 0-0 transition, indicating a fully planarized geometry of the diphenyl-bis-EDOT chromophores. The (1)H NMR spectra of the macrocycles displayed weak to moderate chemical shifts of characteristic signals upon addition of pi-conjugated oligonitro-9-fluorenone acceptors. X-ray single-crystal analysis showed that columnar pi-stacked donor/acceptor complexes are formed with the stacks composed of alternating donor and acceptor molecules. The stoichiometry of the crystalline, dark-colored complexes was found to be 1:1 by elemental analysis and integration of the (1)H NMR peaks. The complex formation is accompanied by remarkably large Stern-Volmer constants of fluorescence quenching.

Abstract
Upon complexation of a rectangular-shaped achiral macrocyclic host with chiral guests, twisting deformation occurs to induce exciton-type bisignated CD, whereas a chiral rectangular host undergoes a similar structural change only with the matching enantiomer of a chiral guest.

Abstract
A Suzuki polycondensation reaction has been used to synthesize two copolymers consisting of alternating oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (OPV) donor and perylene bisimide (PERY) acceptor chromophores. The copolymers differ by the length of the saturated spacer that connects the OPV and PERY units. Photoinduced singlet energy transfer and photoinduced charge separation in these polychromophores have been studied in solution and in the solid state via photoluminescence and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. In both polymers a photoinduced electron transfer occurs within a few picoseconds after excitation of the OPV or the PERY chromophore. The electron transfer from OPV excited state competes with a singlet energy transfer state to the PERY chromophore. The differences in rate constants for the electron- and energy-transfer processes are discussed on the basis of correlated quantum-chemical calculations and in terms of conformational preferences and folding of the two polymers. In solution, the lifetime of the charge-separated state is longer than in the films where geminate recombination is much faster. However, in the films some charges are able to escape from geminate recombination and diffuse away and can be collected at the electrodes when the polymers are incorporated in a photovoltaic device.
