Redox Switches with Chiroptical Signal Expression Based on Binaphthyl Boron Dipyrromethene Conjugates

Axially-chiral boramidine for detailed (chir)optical studies

The inclusion of boron atoms into chiral π-conjugated systems is an effective strategy to unlock unique chiroptical properties. Herein, the preparation and characterization of a configurationally stable axially-chiral boramidine are reported, showcasing absorption in the UV domain, deep-blue fluorescence (Φ up to 94%), and ca. |10-3| gabs and glum values. Detailed photophysical studies and quantum-chemical calculations clearly elucidate the deactivation pathways of the emissive state to triplet excited states, involving increased spin-orbit coupling between the lowest singlet excited state and an upper triplet state.

UV-vis and ECD spectroelectrochemistry of atropisomeric naphthalenediimide derivative

The UV-vis and ECD spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) of a chiral binaphthalenylamine derivative of the N-butyl naphthalenediimide (NDIB-NH₂) enantiomers were applied to measure UV-vis and ECD spectra of NDIB-NH₂ radicals and dianion formed in the reduction and oxidation processes observed in cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV curves and EPR spectroelectrochemistry enabled us to establish conditions at which a radical-anion [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.-, a dianion [NDIB-NH₂]^2-, and a radical-cation [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.+ are formed. The DFT restricted open-shell CAM-B3LYP-D3/def2TZVP/PCM calculations demonstrated that in the radical-anion [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.-, spin is spread over the NDI system while in the radical-cation [NDIB-NH₂]̇⁺ it is spread over the aminonaphthalene moiety. The UV-vis spectra of radical-anion and dianion show the most significant changes in the 400-800 nm range. In that range, the ECD spectra varied with the change of electrode potential more than the UV-vis did and enabled the identification of a new ECD band of [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.- at ca. 400 nm hidden in the background in the UV spectra at -1000 mV. A broad structured ECD pattern with a maximum at ca. 530 nm was observed for [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.- (-1000 mV), while a single smooth ECD band of [NDIB-NH₂]^2- was located at 520 nm (-1750 mV). For the first time, an isosbestic point (455 nm) was found in ECD spectroelectrochemical measurements for the radical-cation [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.+ in equilibrium with the NDIB-NH₂ neutral form. The TD-DFT CAM-B3LYP-D3/6-31G** calculations combined with the hybrid (explicit combined with implicit) solvation model fairly well reproduced the UV-vis and ECD SEC of neutral and redox forms of NDIB-NH₂ but the ECD spectrum of [NDIB-NH₂]̇^.+ above 390 nm.

Chiroptical Switching and Quantitative Chirality Sensing with (Pseudo)halogenated Quinones

(Pseudo)halogenated quinones react smoothly with chiral amines, amino alcohols, and amino acids toward push-pull conjugates with optical sensing and switching applications. The chiroptically active conjugates serve as redox switches between two reversibly interconverting states with remarkably different UV and CD signatures. Addition of sodium borohydride generates a hydroquinone derivative that is quantitatively re-oxidized to the original quinone upon exposure to air. This chiroptical quinone/hydroquinone redox switch system combines several attractive features such as simple set-up, use of inexpensive chemicals, short response time, and thermal and photochemical stability. A conceptually new sensing approach that is based on integrated chiroptical amplification and redox switching enables on-the-fly deconvolution of otherwise overlapping CD spectra and is used for quantitative er analysis of challenging samples containing constitutional isomers in varying enantiomeric compositions.

Redox-active tetraaryldibenzoquinodimethanes

Quinodimethanes (QDs) are a class of non-aromatic π-conjugated compounds that are well-known to be interconvertible scaffolds in many response systems. While parent ortho- and para-QDs (o-QD and p-QD) can be easily converted to benzocyclobutenes or oligomers/polymers by the formation of C-C bonds at α-positions, the attachment of four phenyl groups to these reactive sites makes o-Ph₄QD and p-Ph₄QD long-lived. We have demonstrated that further dibenzo-annulation of such tetraaryl QD units also drastically increases their stability, and many tetraarylated dibenzoquinodimethane derivatives have been developed. This Feature Article shows our milestones in creating functional redox systems, where drastic changes in structure occur upon electron transfer (dynamic redox "dyrex" behaviour).

ECD spectroelectrochemistry: A review

The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy is probably the most important chiraloptical method, and the role of chirality in contemporary chemistry, pharmacy, and material science constantly increases. On the other hand, the electrochemical methods are also very sensitive tools for studying multivarious redox processes. Nevertheless, the first ECD spectroelectrochemical (SEC) study was only published by Daub, Salbeck and Aurbach in 1988, and since then, the ECD SEC method has been mentioned in only thirty papers. By the summer of 2020, the ECD SEC studies were mainly focused around molecular systems for organic, and marginally, inorganic chiroptical switching studies of biochemical redox reactions. The review provides more details about the ECD SEC studies carried out so far. At the end, we suggest some future applications for the ECD spectroelectrochemistry.

Synthesis and Functions of Oligomeric and Multidentate Dipyrrin Derivatives and their Complexes

The dipyrrin–metal complexes and especially the boron complex 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) have recently attracted considerable attention because of their interesting properties and possible applications. We have developed two unique and useful ways to extend versatility and usefulness of the dipyrrin complexes. The first one is the linear and macrocyclic oligomerization of the BODIPY units. These arrangements of the B–F moieties of the oligomerized BODIPY units provide sophisticated functions, such as unique recognition ability toward cationic guest, associated with changes in the photophysical properties by utilizing unprecedented interactions between the B–F and a cationic species. The second one is introduction of additional ligating moieties into the dipyrrin skeleton. The multidentate N2Ox dipyrrin ligands thus obtained form a variety of complexes with 13 and 14 group elements, which are difficult to synthesize using the original N2 dipyrrin derivatives. Interestingly, these unique complexes exhibit novel structures, properties, and functions such as guest recognition, stimuli-responsive structural conversion, switching of the optical properties, excellent stability of the neutral radicals, etc. We believe that these multifunctional dipyrrin complexes will advance the basic chemistry of the dipyrrin complexes and develop their applications in the materials and medicinal chemistry fields.

Bis(haloBODIPYs) with Labile Helicity: Valuable Simple Organic Molecules That Enable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Simple organic molecules (SOM) based on bis(haloBODIPY) are shown to enable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), giving rise to a new structural design for technologically valuable CPL-SOMs. The established design comprises together synthetic accessibility, labile helicity, possibility of reversing the handedness of the circularly polarized emission, and reactive functional groups, making it unique and attractive as advantageous platform for the development of smart CPL-SOMs.

Assembly of an Axially Chiral Dynamic Redox System with a Perfluorobiphenyl Skeleton into Dumbbell- or Tripod-type Electron Donors

The incorporation of F atoms endows a diethenylbiphenyl-based electron donor with configurational stability and SN Ar reactivity. The former enables the dynamic redox pair of (Rax)-1/(Rax ,R,R)-1(2+) to exhibit drastic UV/Vis and CD spectral changes upon electrolysis, whereas the latter makes it possible for (Rax)-1 to serve as a useful chiral synthon for the production of larger assemblies [(Rax ,Rax)-2 d,p,m and (Rax ,Rax ,Rax)-3] containing two or three dyrex units. These dyads and triad also exhibit a clean electrochiroptical response with isosbestic points owing to one-wave multi-electron transfer.

Controlled formation of chiral networks and their reversible chiroptical switching behaviour by UV/microwave irradiation

By using chiral diamines a chiral 3D coordination polymer is assembled to show reversible chiroptical switching behavior by UV/microwave irradiation.

A new multi-addressable molecular switch based on a photochromic diarylethene with a 6-aryl[1,2-c]quinazoline unit

A novel diarylethene with a 6-aryl[1,2-c]quinazoline unit has been synthesized via a nucleophilic reaction. Its photochromism and fluorescence exhibited multi-addressable behaviors by the stimulation of both light irradiation and acid/base. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid to the solution of the diarylethene resulted in notable absorption spectral change, and the protonated form also possessed excellent photochromic properties. Meanwhile, its emission intensity was enhanced remarkably and the emission peak redshifted with a notable color change from dark blue to bright green. The changes could be recovered to the initial state by neutralizing with triethylamine. Consequently, a logic circuit was constructed with the diarylethene by using the fluorescence intensity at 482nm as output and acid/base as inputs.

A Highly Selective Fluorescent Indicator for Copper Based on a Boron Complex

Condensation of 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde with aqueous hydrazine, followed by complexation with BF3·OEt2 gives a fluorescent indicator highly selective for copper. The indicator forms a 2 : 1 complex with Cu2+ and displays a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent quenching action with Cu2+ upon excitation at 440 nm in water/THF (7 : 3, v/v) solution. This action is pH-independent over the range 4.5 < pH < 9.5.

Synthesis and photophysical properties of pyrene-based green fluorescent dyes: butterfly-shaped architectures

A few pyrene-based fluorescent compounds were synthesized using Pd/Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction. Photophysical properties of the π-conjugated pyrene derivatives were studied and the results indicate materials with high quantum efficiency and high extinction coefficient. No π stacking was observed in the crystal lattice. The molecules described here may be useful in developing sensors or imaging agents.

Circularly polarized luminescence by visible-light absorption in a chiral O-BODIPY dye: unprecedented design of CPL organic molecules from achiral chromophores

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in simple (small, nonaggregated, nonpolymeric) O-BODIPYs (R)-1 and (S)-1 by irradiation with visible light is first detected as proof of the ability of a new structural design to achieve CPL from inherently achiral monochromophore systems in simple organic molecules. The measured level of CPL (|g(lum)|) in solution falls into the usual range of that obtained from other simple organic molecules (10(-5)-10(-2) range), but the latter having more complex architectures since axially chiral chromophores or multichromophore systems are usually required. The new design is based on chirally perturbing the acting achiral chromophore by orthogonally tethering a single axially chiral 1,1'-binaphtyl moiety to it. The latter does not participate as a chromophore in the light-absorption/emission phenomenon. This simple design opens up new perspectives for the future development of new small-sized CPL organic dyes (e.g., those based on other highly luminescent achiral chromophores and/or chirally perturbing moieties), as well as for the improvement of the CPL properties of the organic molecules spanning their use in photonic applications.

Axially chiral BODIPYs

The synthesis and resolution of a class of chiral organic fluorophores, axially chiral 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacenes (Ax*-BODIPY), is described. Ax*-BODIPYs were prepared through a modular synthesis, resolved by preparative chiral HPLC and absolute stereochemistry assigned by ECD.

An optically transparent thin-layer electrochemical cell for the study of vibrational circular dichroism of chiral redox-active molecules

An optically transparent thin-layer electrochemical (OTTLE) cell with a locally extended optical path has been developed in order to perform vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy on chiral molecules prepared in specific oxidation states by means of electrochemical reduction or oxidation. The new design of the electrochemical cell successfully addresses the technical challenges involved in achieving sufficient infrared absorption. The VCD-OTTLE cell proves to be a valuable tool for the investigation of chiral redox-active molecules.

Electrochemistry and electrogenerated chemiluminescence of BODIPY dyes

BODIPY (boron dipyrromethene) dyes are unique materials with spectroscopic and electrochemical properties comparable to those of aromatic hydrocarbons. Electrochemical studies are useful in understanding the redox properties of these materials and finding structure-stability relations for the radical ions; along with spectroscopy, these studies help researchers design novel compounds with desired properties. This Account represents our attempt at a full description of the electrochemical and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) properties of the BODIPY dyes. When the dyes are completely substituted with alkyl or other groups, the radical ions of BODIPY dyes are highly stable. But if they include unsubstituted positions, the radical ions can undergo dimerization or other reactions. BODIPY dyes also show unusually large separations, ~1.0 V, between the first and second cyclic voltammetric (CV) waves for both oxidation and reduction half-reactions. Alkyl-substituted BODIPY dyes show good photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiencies, and radical ion electron transfer annihilation in these molecules produces electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL), the intensity of which depends on the structure of the dye. The large separation between waves and the presence of strong ECL signals are both important in the design of stable ECL-based materials. The ECL spectra provide a fast method of monitoring the electrochemical formation of dimers and aggregates from the monomers. BODIPY dyes are particularly good systems for studying stepwise electron transfer in their chemically synthesized oligomers and polymers because of the small separation between the first oxidation and first reduction waves, generally about 2.0-2.4 V, and their relative ease of reduction compared with many other aromatic compounds. The larger separation between consecutive waves for oxidation compared with reduction is noticeable for all BODIPY dimers and trimers. We also observe a more difficult addition or extraction of a third electron compared with the second for the trimers, signaling the importance of electrostatic interactions. In general, BODIPY dyes combine interesting electrochemical and spectroscopic properties that suggest useful analytical applications.

A controllable chiral molecular machine: movement on molecular level

With the view to develop new chiral molecular switches, a new pH-controlled bistable chiral [3]rotaxane with a binaphthalene as chiral moiety is synthesized and characterized. The movement of the macrocycle DB24C8 along the thread tunes the dihedral angle between the two naphthalene rings and supplies tunable circular dichroism output signals.

Synthesis of isoindoles and related iso-condensed heteroaromatic pyrroles

Over the past few years, isoindoles have found wide application in materials science. Isoindole containing BODIPY dyes are highly fluorescent materials and have been extensively used in various fields of science. Phthalocyanines, metal containing cyclic tetramers of isoindole, form coordination complexes with most elements of the periodic table. These complexes are intensely coloured and are used as pigments and dyes. However, isoindoles are relatively unstable 10π-heteroaromatic systems and few synthetic methods provide these compounds in good yields. This tutorial review will give an overview of the reported synthetic methods towards isoindoles and related heteroaromatic systems over a time span of approximately 10 years (2000 to current), including the applications where they have been reported. The importance of the field will be illustrated and factors influencing product stability will be discussed.

Recent advances towards azobenzene-based light-driven real-time information-transmitting materials

Photochromic switches that are able to transmit information in a quick fashion have attracted a growing interest within materials science during the last few decades. Although very fast photochromic switching materials working within hundreds of nanoseconds based on other chromophores, such as spiropyranes, have been successfully achieved, reaching such fast relaxation times for azobenzene-based photochromic molecular switches is still a challenge. This review focuses on the most recent achievements on azobenzene-based light-driven real-time information-transmitting systems. Besides, the main relationships between the structural features of the azo-chromophore and the thermal cis-to-trans isomerisation, the kinetics and mechanism are also discussed as a key point for reaching azoderivatives endowed with fast thermal back-isomerisation kinetics.

CHARGE AND ENERGY TRANSFER IN BINAPHTHALENE MOLECULE WITH TWO SPIROPYRAN UNITS USED FOR CHIRAL MOLECULAR SWITCHES AND LOGIC GATES

A new binaphthalene molecule with two spiropyran units used for chiral molecular switches and logic gates was synthesized and characterized.12 In this paper, charge and energy transfer in binaphthalene molecule with two spiropyran units are theoretically investigated with quantum chemistry method, as well as 2D and 3D real space analysis methods, since molecule construction with photoinduced electron transfer or charge transfer is one of the most frequently used pathways for building useful sensors and molecular machines. The orientation and strength of transition dipole moment in absorption spectra are obtained by 3D transition density. The orientation and results of intramolecular charge transfer on the excitation are obtained with 3D charge difference densities. The electron-hole coherence and excitation delocalization in absorption spectra are investigated with 2D contour plots of transition density matrix. Overall, the computed results remain in good agreement with the relevant experimental data, and the theoretical results reveal the relationship between the function of sensor and the excited state properties of the structure and transformation of the compound, upon addition of acid and base in absorption spectra.
