Abstract
Phenol is one of the most important fine chemical intermediates in the synthesis of plastics and drugs with a market size of ca. $30b1 and the commercial production is via a two-step selective oxidation of benzene, requiring high energy input (high temperature and high pressure) in the presence of a corrosive acidic medium, and causing serious environmental issues2-5. Here we present a four-phase interface strategy with well-designed Pd@Cu nanoarchitecture decorated TiO2 as a catalyst in a suspension system. The optimised catalyst leads to a turnover number of 16,000-100,000 for phenol generation with respect to the active sites and an excellent selectivity of ca. 93%. Such unprecedented results are attributed to the efficient activation of benzene by the atomically Cu coated Pd nanoarchitecture, enhanced charge separation, and an oxidant-lean environment. The rational design of catalyst and reaction system provides a green pathway for the selective conversion of symmetric organic molecules.

Abstract
Ferrocene is used as a catalytically active site and building block to construct a new conjugated microporous polymer (CMP), named Fc-POP. A corresponding carbon nanotube composite (CNTs@Fc-POP) with tubular structure was obtained through the π–π interaction between multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reactive molecules. This innovative modification method of carbon nanotubes provides a way to construct functionalized carbon materials. The two materials can achieve high conversion and selectivity of benzene hydroxylation to phenol under light irradiation using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidant. Due to the synergistic effect between the carbon nanotubes and the ferrocene group, the incorporation of MWCNTs can improve the yield of phenol significantly. This work explores a new photocatalystic system and expands the related photocatalytic application of CNTs. Ferrocene is used as a catalytically active site and building block to construct a new conjugated microporous polymer (CMP), named Fc-POP.![]()

Abstract
A dual mechanism for direct benzene catalytic hydroxylation is described. Experimental studies and DFT calculations have provided a mechanistic explanation for the acid-free, Tp x Cu-catalyzed hydroxylation of benzene with hydrogen peroxide (Tp x = hydrotrispyrazolylborate ligand). In contrast with other catalytic systems that promote this transformation through Fenton-like pathways, this system operates through a copper-oxyl intermediate that may interact with the arene ring following two different, competitive routes: (a) electrophilic aromatic substitution, with the copper-oxyl species acting as the formal electrophile, and (b) the so-called rebound mechanism, in which the hydrogen is abstracted by the Cu-O moiety prior to the C-O bond formation. Both pathways contribute to the global transformation albeit to different extents, the electrophilic substitution route seeming to be largely favoured.

Abstract
The OsVI nitrido complex, OsVI (N)(quin)2 (OTs) (1, quin=2-quinaldinate, OTs=tosylate), is a highly selective and efficient catalyst for the ring hydroxylation of alkylbenzenes with H2 O2 at room temperature. Oxidation of various alkylbenzenes occurs with ring/chain oxidation ratios ranging from 96.7/3.3 to 99.9/0.1, and total product yields from 93 % to 98 %. Moreover, turnover numbers up to 6360, 5670, and 3880 can be achieved for the oxidation of p-xylene, ethylbenzene, and mesitylene, respectively. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the active intermediate is an OsVIII nitrido oxo species.

Abstract
Hierarchical HZSM-5 were synthesised by controlled desilication in alkaline medium and characterised by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry, N2 adsorption–desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The catalytic performance of HZSM-5 towards the selective oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol by H2O2 was evaluated. Recyclability tests were also carried out. The results showed that 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone was produced in high yields (i.e. 90 %), corresponding to a 2,3,6-trimethylphenol percentage of 98 %. The N2 adsorption–desorption and XRD studies suggested that mesopores with an average size of 5 nm were produced and that the structural character of HZSM-5 was preserved after desilication. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the spent catalyst indicated good stability of the hierarchical structure. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies revealed the development of acid sites. The combined results suggested that the nature of the solvent, intrinsic acidity, and shape selectivity of the hierarchical structure of the catalyst ensured high catalytic properties.

Abstract
This work reports on iron-catalysed hydroxylation of benzene and toluene using aqueous H2O2. While benzene is hydroxylated with a high selectivity to phenol, toluene is hydroxylated to cresols with a high selectivity for the ortho and para-position. An inverse KIE indicates the presence of a high valent Fe=O species during catalysis.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) raspberry-like CuCr2O4 spinel nanoparticles were prepared hydrothermally in the presence of cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Detailed characterization of the material was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD revealed the formation of CuCr2O4 spinel phase, and SEM showed the formation of a 3D raspberry-like structure, composed of 20-50 nm nanoparticles. The raspberry-like particles exhibited excellent catalytic behavior for the hydroxylation of benzene to phenol with H2O2. The influence of reaction parameters were investigated in detail. A benzene conversion of 68.5% with 95% phenol selectivity was achieved at 80 °C. The catalyst did not show any leaching up to 10 reuses, showing the true heterogeneity of the catalyst. However, significant H2O2 decomposition occurs on the catalyst necessitating its use in 5-fold excess.

Abstract
Ferrocene moieties were heterogenized onto carbon nitride polymers by a covalent -C=N- linkage bridging the two conjugation systems, enabling the merging of the redox function of ferrocene with carbon nitride photocatalysis to construct a heterogeneous Photo-Fenton system for green organocatalysis at neutral conditions. The synergistic donor-acceptor interaction between the carbon nitride matrix and ferrocene group, improved exciton splitting, and coupled photocatalytic performance allowed the direct synthesis of phenol from benzene in the presence of H2 O2 under visible light irradiation. This innovative modification method will offer an avenue to construct functionalized two-dimensional polymers useful also for other green synthesis processes using solar irradiation.

Abstract
In this article, we demonstrate for the first time that ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4) possess peroxidase activity. Fe doping of the nanosheets leads to peroxidase mimetics with greatly enhanced catalytic performance and the mechanism involved is proposed. We further demonstrate the novel use of such Fe-g-C3N4 as a cheap nanosensor for simple, rapid, highly selective and sensitive optical detection of glucose with a pretty low detection limit of 0.5 μM.

Abstract
The homogeneous Fenton-like oxidation of organic substrates in water with hydrogen peroxide, catalyzed by six different metal coordination complexes with N-based neutral ligands, was studied at ambient conditions and initial pH 7, employing hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant. At low catalyst concentration, the catalytic oxidative depletion of toluene achieved by selected catalysts was much more efficient than that obtained by the Fenton reagent at pH 3. The influence of pH, the water matrix and the catalyst/hydrogen peroxide concentration were investigated for the oxidation of toluene employing [FeCl2(bpmcn)] (1, bpmcn = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N,N'-dimethyl-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane), the most efficient catalyst of the series. Moreover, the evolution of catalysts [FeCl2(bpmcn)] (1) and [Fe(OTf)2(Pytacn)] (3, Pytacn = 1-(2-pyridylmethyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate anion) during the course of the reaction was also studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The oxidation products derived from toluene oxidation were also analyzed. A plausible mechanism of toluene degradation using [FeCl2(bpmcn)] (1) and [Fe(OTf)2(Pytacn)] (3) as catalysts was proposed, which involves the coexistence of a metal-based path, analogous to that operating in organic media where substrate oxidation is executed by an iron(V)-oxo-hydroxo species, in parallel to a Fenton-type process where hydroxyl radicals are formed.
