Electronic Structure of Vanadium Dioxide: Ab initio Density Functional Theory Studies of Periodic and Local Systems

Surfaces of VO2 -Polymorphs: Structure, Stability and the Effect of Doping

Vanadium dioxide is an interesting and frequently applied material due to its metal‐insulator phase transition. However, there are only few studies of the catalytic activity and surface properties of different VO₂ polymorphs. Therefore, we investigated the properties of the surfaces of the most stable VO₂ phases theoretically at density‐functional theory level using a self‐consistent hybrid functional which has demonstrated its accuracy for the prediction of structural, electronic and energetic properties in a previous study. We found that the surfaces of the rutile R phase of VO₂ are not stable and show a spontaneous phase transition to the monoclinic M₁ phase. Doping with Mo stabilizes the surfaces with rutile structure even for small dopant concentrations (6.25 %). Both M₁ and R surfaces strongly relax, with and without doping. In particular the metal‐metal distances in the uppermost layers change by up to 0.4 Å. Mo segregates in the topmost layer of both R and M₁ phases. The electronic structure is only slightly changed upon doping.

LOW-COST SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL VANADIUM DIOXIDE NANORODS

The synthesis of novel vanadium dioxide nanorods has been achieved by using V 2 O 5 and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in a sol–gel reaction followed by hydrothermal treatment. Morphology and structure of the sample as well as vanadium oxidation state were characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, ESR, XPS and redox titration. The results show that the products are monoclinic (C/2m) B phase VO 2 nanorods and they are 1~2 μm in length. HRTEM micrographs reveal that they indeed form bundles of agglomerated smaller filaments with diameters ranging from 20 to 40 nm besides single nanorod. This filament-like shape in the nanoscale dimension leads to the exposure of a large fraction of the atoms to the surface. Thus, these materials are promising candidates for the development of new functionalized materials. CTAB not only generates a reducing atmosphere, but also plays a key role in the growth of the nanorods. The simplicity of hydrothermal process, as well as cheapness and availability of raw materials are advantages of this method.

Synthetic paramontroseite VO2 with good aqueous lithium-ion battery performance

Synthetic paramontroseite VO(2) has been successfully obtained using a simple chemical reaction route for the first time after fifty years; the paramontroseite phase shows a conducting property and good aqueous lithium ion battery performance.
