Abstract
Lead ion is very harmful to the environment, so it is very important to study its detection methods. In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor was constructed by modifying deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) on the electrode, which can be used for the detection of Pb2+ in the environment. Part of the mixed solution of chitosan (CS) and Pb2+ template ions was dropped onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. CS-Pb2+ film was cross-linked through sodium tripolyphosphate. And a novel DNA-imprinted sensor was prepared by electrodepositing CS-Pb2+ thin film with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), removing Pb2+ templates, and immobilizing specific double-stranded DNA. The electroactive area, surface morphology, sensitivity, and electrochemical reaction mechanism of the DNA-imprinted sensor were analyzed. The elementary reaction steps were studied through electrochemical reaction kinetics analysis. The experimental results indicate that the DNA-imprinted electrochemical biosensor can quantitatively detect Pb2+ in the range of 10-100 μM (R2 = 0.9935), and its detection limit is 6.5074 μM (3σ/slope). The sensitivity of the electrochemical biosensor is 1.55233 × 10-6 A/μM, and its active areas is 6.233 cm2. The desorption mechanism and adsorption mechanism have been explored through dynamic parameter analysis. The novel DNA imprinted electrochemical biosensor developed in this paper provides a robust method for detecting lead ions in solution. Additionally, it establishes a solid groundwork for detecting other metal ions.

Abstract
A sensitive and accurate simultaneous continuous analysis for six arsenic species including arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenocholine (AsC), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenite (AsIII), and arsenate (AsV) has been developed by high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). An anion-exchange column of Hamilton PRP-X100 (Switzerland) was applied for separation of the six arsenic species with gradient elution of 1.25 mmol/L Na2HPO4 and 11.0 mmol/L KH2PO4 as the mobile phase A and 2.5 mmol/L Na2HPO4 and 22.0 mmol/L KH2PO4 as the mobile phase B. The linearity ranges for AsB, AsC, MMA, DMA, AsIII, and AsV were between 0.5 and 50.0 μg/L, and the detection limits of the six arsenic species were all within 0.01–0.35 ng/L. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within 2.26–3.68% and the recovery rates of samples ranged from 95 to 103%. The proposed method was applied for the arsenic speciation analysis of sediment pore-water samples, which were taken from the supernatant after centrifugation and filtration.

Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) guideline states that the total arsenic concentration in drinking water must not exceed 10 ppb. However, arsenic toxicity varies significantly, with inorganic arsenic species being more toxic than organic species. Arsenic speciation is therefore important for evaluating the health risks from arsenic-contaminated drinking water. Capillary electrophoresis provides the necessary high performance separation to determine arsenic species in water, but its sensitivity with absorbance detection is far below than needed. Using a coated capillary, several on-line sample preconcentration techniques such as large volume sample stacking with an electroosmotic flow pump, field amplified sample injection (FASI), transient isotachophoresis (tITP), electrokinetic supercharging (EKS) combining FASI and tITP, and counter flow (CF)-EKS, were therefore investigated. With CF-EKS using phosphate and N-cyclohexyl-2-aminoethanesulfonate as leading and terminating electrolytes, respectively, standard samples of arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsonic acid, and dimethylarsinic acid were preconcentrated from 6,300- to 45,000-fold. The limits of detection obtained with UV absorbance detection were 0.08-0.3 ppb As. For a spring water sample spiked with the four arsenic species, LODs of 2-9 ppb As were obtained, which are lower than the WHO guideline of 10 ppb total As.

Abstract
The optical detection for inorganic arsenic (As) semi-quantitative determination is presented by using silver nanoplates (AgNPls). The color of AgNPs is immediately changed in the presence of As(III) and As(V) with the same sensitivity. To improve the selectivity of AgNPls for As detection, ferrihydrite-coated silica gel (SiO2-Fh) was specifically exploited as adsorbent for arsenic prior to As detection by AgNPls. The developed method provides the detection limit of 0.5ppm with the detection range between 0.5ppm and 30.0ppm for As determination observed with naked eye, and allows to determine total inorganic arsenic. This is the first report of As detection approach combining As removal technology together with nanotechnology. This combined technique provides a rapid, sensitive and selective method for monitoring As levels in aqueous samples, and can be employed as a testing field kit to screen arsenic contamination outside of a laboratory.

Abstract
The determination of arsenic(III) and arsenic(V), as inorganic arsenite and arsenate, was investigated by CE with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (CE-C(4)D). It was found necessary to determine the two inorganic arsenic species separately employing two different electrolyte systems. Electrolyte solutions consisting of 50 mM CAPS/2 mM L-arginine (Arg) (pH 9.0) and of 45 mM acetic acid (pH 3.2) were used for arsenic(III) and arsenic(V) determinations, respectively. Detection limits of 0.29 and 0.15 microM were achieved for As(III) and As(V), respectively by using large-volume injection to maximize the sensitivity. The analysis of contaminated well water samples from Vietnam is demonstrated.

Abstract
A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with indirect laser-induced fluorescence detection (ILIFD) method is described for the simultaneous determination of esculin, esculetin, isofraxidin, genistein, naringin and sophoricoside. The baseline separation was achieved within 5 min with running buffer (pH 9.4) composed of 5mM borate, 20% methanol (v/v) as organic modifier, 10(-7)M fluorescein sodium as background fluorophore and 20 kV of applied voltage at 30 degrees C of cartridge temperature. Good linearity relationships (correlation coefficients >0.9900) between the second-order derivative peak-heights (RFU) and concentrations of the analytes (mol L(-1)) were obtained. The detection limits for all analytes in second-order derivative electrophoregrams were in the range of 3.8-15 microM. The RSD data of intra-day for migration times and second-order derivative peak-height were less than 0.95 and 5.02%, respectively. This developed method was applied to the analysis of the courmin compounds in herb plants with recoveries in the range of 94.7-102.1%. In this work, although the detection sensitivity was lower than that of direct LIF, yet the method would extend the application range of LIF detection.

Abstract
An online preconcentration technique by dynamic pH junction was studied to improve the detection limit for anionic arsenic compounds by CE. The main target compound is roxarsone, or 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid, which is being used as an animal feed additive. The other inorganic and organoarsenic compounds studied are the possible biotransformation products of roxarsone. The arsenic species were separated by a dynamic pH junction in a fused-silica capillary using 15 mM phosphate buffer (pH 10.6) as the BGE and 15 mM acetic acid as the sample matrix. CE with UV detection was monitored at a wavelength of 192 nm. The influence of buffer pH and concentration on dynamic pH junction were investigated. The arsenic species focusing resulted in LOD improvement by a factor of 100-800. The combined use of C18 and anion exchange SPE and dynamic pH junction to CE analysis of chicken litter and soils helps to increase the detection sensitivity. Recoveries of spiked samples ranged between 70 and 72%.

Abstract
Indirect LIF detection was applied to the detection of four acidic diuretics separated by CZE. Semiconductor laser was employed to provide the stable excitation of 473 nm. With an optimized electrophoretic buffer system which contained 5 mM of triethylamine, 0.1 microM of fluorescein, and 5% of n-butanol, fast separation of four diuretics (ethacrynic acid, chlorthalidone, bendroflumethiazide, and bumetanide) can be performed within 3 min with the detection limits of 0.2-2 microg/mL. The impacts of buffer components including the concentrations of the electrolytes, fluorescence probe, and the organic additives were demonstrated. The method was applied for the detection of diuretics in urine. As an alternative way for the fast analysis of diuretics, this indirect detection method provided the technical support for future microchip performances, in which diuretics may be detected in the microchip by the common LIF detector without derivatization.

Abstract
This review as a sequel of three earlier similar reports gives a summary of the progress and significant methodological developments, starting from 2002, in the use of capillary electrophoresis (CE) for inorganic ion analysis. As substantiated by the illustrative number of relevant references, improvements in sensitivity achieved both in and outside a CE system, advances in manipulating the separation selectivity, novel hardware configurations, and system performance innovations are continually being reported over the review period. Specifically viewed are the recent advancements in elemental (bio)speciation analysis, which remains one of the most fertile areas of CE research, as well as in three recently booming research topics: contactless conductivity detection, separations on microchips, and transient isotachophoretic preconcentration. A state-of-the-art picture of technique's potentialities within the field of interest presented here demonstrates that CE has become recognized and is growing in acceptance as a reliable alternative to traditional analytical methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract
This report presents simultaneous analysis of cations and anions by capillary electrophoresis (CE) in conjunction with indirect fluorescence detection using a blue light-emitting diode (LED), based on the displacement of fluorescein with anionic EDTA-metal complexes and anions. A new focusing system combined with a plastic lens and a 40x objective was developed and used effectively to focus the diverging beam of the LED on the capillary. The optimum compositions for simultaneous analysis of metal ions and anions are the samples prepared in 5 mM borate, pH 9.2, containing 2 mM EDTA and the background electrolytes (BGEs) consisting of 5 mM borate buffer, 5 microM fluorescein, and 1 microM NaCl at pH 9.2. Using this pre-capillary complexation method, the analysis of a sample containing five metal ions and eight anions was accomplished in 8 min, with the relative standard deviation values for the migration times less than 2.0%. The peak heights against the concentrations of the metal ions and anions are linear in 10-1000 and 50-2000 microM, with correlation coefficients better than 0.998, and 0.982, respectively. The limits of detection at a signal-to-noise ratio 3 of up to 14.6 microM for formate and as low as 3.7 microM for Ni2+. The results of the analyses of pond water and a Chinese herbal soup present the advantages of this method, including simplicity, rapidity, reproducibility, and low costs.
