Electron acceleration during streamer collisions in air

Streamer formation processes trigger intense x-ray and high-frequency radio emissions in a high-voltage discharge

For a laboratory discharge initiated in a long air gap by a microsecond megavolt pulse, we simultaneously register wideband high-frequency microwave and hard-x-ray emissions and thoroughly analyze the temporal relationship of the emissions depending on the discharge evolution. The temporal structure of microwave radiation is found to consist of numerous short intense bursts with high-frequency components. We directly show that x-ray and microwave emissions can appear almost synchronously in the discharge but only when a complex net of countless plasma channels forms and spans the entire discharge gap. The channel formation is closely related to the intense development of multiple streamers.

Secondary Fast Breakdown in Narrow Bipolar Events

The physical mechanism of Narrow bipolar events (NBEs) has been studied for decades but it still holds many mysteries. Recent observations indicate that the fast breakdown discharges that produce NBEs sometimes contain a secondary fast breakdown that propagates back in the opposite direction but this has not been fully addressed so far in electromagnetic models. In this study, we investigate fast breakdown using different approaches that employ a Modified Transmission Line with Exponential decay (MTLE) model and propose a new model, named "rebounding MTLE model," which reproduces the secondary fast breakdown current in NBEs. The model provides new insights into the physics of the fast breakdown mechanism.

Ionization Waves Enhance the Production of X-rays during Streamer Collisions

Experimental data show that in laboratory sparks, X-rays are produced in time synchronization with the meeting of streamers of opposite polarity just before the final breakdown of the discharge gap. It has been suggested that the electric field enhancement created during the collision of streamers could provide the necessary conditions for electron acceleration, even though some of the theoretical studies show that the duration of the electric field is not long enough to do so. The experimental data on laboratory discharges show that. when streamers of opposite polarity meet each other, a potential or ionization wave that renders the streamer channels conducting is initiated. This paper shows that these ionization waves that convert the discharge channels from weakly conducting to highly conducting are associated with electric fields large enough to accelerate electrons to relativistic energies.

Influence of Elastic Scattering on Electron Swarm Distribution in Electrified Gases

The propagation of energetic electrons through air is one key component in the generation of high-energy atmospheric phenomena such as lightning-generated X-ray bursts, terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs), and gamma ray glows. We show here that models for this propagation can be considerably affected by the parameterization of the differential cross section of elastic scattering of electrons on the molecular components of air. We assess existing parameterizations and propose a more accurate one that builds upon the most up-to-date measurements. Then we conclude that by overweighting the forward scattering probability, previous works may have overestimated the production of runaway electrons under high electric fields close to the thermal runaway threshold.

Spontaneous Emergence of Space Stems Ahead of Negative Leaders in Lightning and Long Sparks

We investigate the emergence of space stems ahead of negative leaders. These are luminous spots that appear ahead of an advancing leader mediating the leader's stepped propagation. We show that space stems start as regions of locally depleted conductivity that form in the streamers of the corona around the leader. An attachment instability enhances the electric field leading to strongly inhomogeneous, bright, and locally warmer regions ahead of the leader that explain the existing observations. Since the attachment instability is only triggered by fields above 10 kV/cm and internal electric fields are lower in positive than in negative streamers, our results explain why, although common in negative leaders, space stems, and stepping are hardly observed if not absent in positive leaders. Further work is required to fully explain the streamer to leader transition, which requires an electric current persisting for timescales longer than the typical attachment time of electrons, around 100 ns.

In-Flight Observation of Positron Annihilation by ILDAS

We report a 511-keV photon flux enhancement that was observed inside a thundercloud and is a result of positron annihilation. The observation was made with the In-flight Lightning Damage Assessment System (ILDAS) on board of an A340 test aircraft. The aircraft was intentionally flying through a thunderstorm at 12-km altitude over Northern Australia in January 2016. Two gamma ray detectors showed a significant count rate increase synchronously with fast electromagnetic field variations registered by an on-board antenna. A sequence of 10 gamma ray enhancements was detected, each lasted for about 1 s. Their spectrum mainly consists of 511-keV photons and their Compton component. The local electric activity during the emission was identified as a series of static discharges of the aircraft. A full-scale Geant4 model of the aircraft was created to estimate the emission area. Monte Carlo simulation indicated that the positrons annihilated in direct vicinity or in the aircraft body.

High-Energy Emissions Induced by Air Density Fluctuations of Discharges

Bursts of X-rays and γ-rays are observed from lightning and laboratory sparks. They are bremsstrahlung from energetic electrons interacting with neutral air molecules, but it is still unclear how the electrons achieve the required energies. It has been proposed that the enhanced electric field of streamers, found in the corona of leader tips, may account for the acceleration; however, their efficiency is questioned because of the relatively low production rate found in simulations. Here we emphasize that streamers usually are simulated with the assumption of homogeneous gas, which may not be the case on the small temporal and spatial scales of discharges. Since the streamer properties strongly depend on the reduced electric field E/n, where n is the neutral number density, fluctuations may potentially have a significant effect. To explore what might be expected if the assumption of homogeneity is relaxed, we conducted simple numerical experiments based on simulations of streamers in a neutral gas with a radial gradient in the neutral density, assumed to be created, for instance, by a previous spark. We also studied the effects of background electron density from previous discharges. We find that X-radiation and γ-radiation are enhanced when the on-axis air density is reduced by more than ∼25%. Pre-ionization tends to reduce the streamer field and thereby the production rate of high-energy electrons; however, the reduction is modest. The simulations suggest that fluctuations in the neutral densities, on the temporal and spacial scales of streamers, may be important for electron acceleration and bremsstrahlung radiation.

A study of the ground-attachment process in natural lightning with emphasis on its breakthrough phase

Synchronized high-speed (124 or 210 kiloframes per second) video images and wideband electromagnetic field records of the attachment process were obtained for 4 negative strokes in natural lightning at the Lightning Observatory in Gainesville, Florida. The majority of imaged upward connecting leaders (UCLs) and upward unconnected leaders, inferred to be mostly initiated from trees, exhibited a pulsating behavior (brightening/fading cycles). UCLs, whose maximum extent ranged from 11 to 25 m, propagated in virgin air at speeds ranging from 1.8 × 10⁵ to 6.0 × 10⁵ m/s with a mean of 3.4 × 10⁵ m/s. Within about 100 m of the ground, the ratio of speeds of the downward negative leader and the corresponding positive UCL was about 3–4 for 2 events and 0.5 for 1 event. The breakthrough phase (final jump) was imaged for 2 events. The initial length of the common streamer zone (CSZ) was estimated to be about 30–40 m. For 2 events, speeds of positive and negative leaders developing toward each other inside the CSZ were found to be between 2.4 × 10⁶ and 3.7 × 10⁶ m/s. For 1 event, opposite polarity leaders were observed to accelerate inside the CSZ. The current at the end of the breakthrough phase, lasting on average 4.7 μs, was estimated to be approximately one-half of the overall current peak. Thus, about one-half of the current peak traditionally attributed to the return-stroke process is actually associated with two leaders extending toward each other to collision inside the CSZ.

Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation From Streamer Collisions

We present a full electromagnetic model of streamer propagation where the Maxwell equations are solved self-consistently together with electron transport and reactions including photoionization. We apply this model to the collision of counter-propagating streamers in gaps tens of centimeters wide and with large potential differences of hundreds of kilovolts. Our results show that streamer collisions emit electromagnetic pulses that, at atmospheric pressure, dominate the radio frequency spectrum of an extended corona in the range from about 100 MHz to a few gigahertz. We also investigate the fast penetration, after a collision, of electromagnetic fields into the streamer heads and show that these fields are capable of accelerating electrons up to about 100 keV. By substantiating the link between X-rays and high-frequency radio emissions and by describing a mechanism for the early acceleration of runaway electrons, our results support the hypothesis that streamer collisions are essential precursors of high-energy processes in electric discharges.
