Temperature-Dependent Dielectric Relaxation Measurements of (Betaine + Urea + Water) Deep Eutectic Solvent in Hz-GHz Frequency Window: Microscopic Insights into Constituent Contributions and Relaxation Mechanisms

A combined experimental and simulation study of dielectric relaxation (DR) of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of betaine, urea, and water with the composition [Betaine:Urea:Water = 11.7:12:1 (weight ratio) and 9:18:5 (molar ratio)] was performed to explore and understand the interaction and dynamics of this system. Temperature-dependent (303 ≤ T/K ≤ 343) measurements were performed over 9 decades of frequency, combining three different measurement setups. Measured DR, comprising four distinct steps with relaxation times spreading over a few picoseconds to several nanoseconds, was found to agree well with simulations. The simulated total DR spectra, upon dissection into three self (intraspecies) and three cross (interspecies) interaction contributions, revealed that the betaine-betaine self-term dominated (∼65%) the relaxation, while the urea-urea and water-water interactions contributed only ∼7% and ∼1%, respectively. The cross-terms (betaine-urea, betaine-water, and urea-water) together accounted for <30% of the total DR. The slowest DR component with a time constant of ∼1-10 ns derived dominant contribution from betaine-betaine interactions, where betaine-water and urea-water interactions also contributed. The subnanosecond (0.1-0.6 ns) time scale originated from all interactions except betaine-water interaction. An extensive interaction of water with betaine and urea severely reduced the average number of water-water H-bonds (∼0.7) and heavily decreased the static dielectric constant of water in this DES (εs ∼ 2). Furthermore, simulated first rank collective single particle reorientational relaxations (C1(t)) and the structural H-bond fluctuation dynamics (CHB (t)) exhibited multiexponential kinetics with time scales that corresponded well with those found both in the simulated and measured DR.

Controlling Interchromophore Coupling in Diamantane-Linked Pentacene Dimers To Create a "Binary" Pair

Two isomeric pentacene dimers, each linked by a diamantane spacer, have been synthesized. These dimers are designed to provide experimental evidence to support quantum mechanical calculations, which predict the substitution pattern on the carbon-rich diethynyldiamantane spacer to be decisive in controlling the interpentacene coupling. Intramolecular singlet fission (i-SF) serves as a probe for the existence and strength of the electronic coupling between the two pentacenes, with transient absorption spectroscopy as the method of choice to characterize i-SF. 4,9-Substitution of diamantane provides a pentacene dimer (4,9-dimer) in which the two chromophores are completely decoupled and that, following photoexcitation, deactivates to the ground state analogous to a monomeric pentacene chromophore. Conversely, 1,6-substitution provides a pentacene dimer (1,6-dimer) that exhibits sufficiently strong coupling to drive i-SF, resulting in correlated triplet M(T1T1) yields close to unity and free triplet (T1 + T1) yields of ca. 50%. Thus, the diamantane spacer effectively switches "on" or "off" the coupling between the chromophores, based on the substitution pattern. The binary control of diamantane contrasts other known molecular spacers designed only to modulate the coupling strength between two pentacenes.

Rigid Cations Induce Enhancement of Microheterogeneity and Exhibit Anomalous Ion Diffusion in Water-Ethanol Mixtures

Because of the amphiphilic nature of ethanol in the aqueous solution, ions cause an interesting microheterogeneity where the water molecules and the hydroxy groups of ethanol preferentially solvate the ions, while the ethyl groups tend to occupy the intervening space. Using computer simulations, we study the dynamics of rigid monovalent cations (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Cs⁺) in aqueous ethanol solutions with chloride as the counterion. We vary both the size of the ions and the composition of the mixture to explore size- and composition-dependent ion diffusion. The relative stability of enhanced microheterogeneous configurations makes ion diffusion slower than what would be surmised by using the bulk properties of the mixture, using the Stokes-Einstein relation. We study the structure through partial radial distribution functions and the stability through coordination number fluctuations. The ion diffusion coefficient exhibits sharp re-entrant behavior when plotted against viscosity varied by composition. Our studies reveal multiple anomalous features of ion motion in this mixture. We formulate a mode-coupling theory (MCT) that takes into account the interaction between different dynamical components; MCT can incorporate the effects of heterogeneous dynamics and nonlinearity in composition dependence that arise from the feedback between mutually dependent ion-solvent dynamics.

Solvation dynamics in electronically polarizable solvents: Theoretical treatment using solvent-polarizable three-dimensional reference interaction-site model theory combined with time-dependent density functional theory

The theory of solvation structure in an electronically polarizable solvent recently proposed by us, referred to as the "solvent-polarizable three-dimensional reference interaction-site model theory," is extended to dynamics in this study through the combination with time-dependent density functional theory. Test calculations are performed on model charge-transfer systems in water, and the effects of electronic polarizability on solvation dynamics are examined. The electronic polarizability slightly retards the solvation dynamics. This is ascribed to the decrease in the curvature of the nonequilibrium free energy profile along the solvation coordinate. The solvent relaxation is bimodal, and the faster and the slower modes are assigned to the reorientational and the translational modes, respectively, as was already reported by the surrogate theory combined with the site-site Smoluchowski-Vlasov equation. The relaxation path along the solvation coordinate is a little higher than the minimum free energy path because the translational mode is fixed in the time scale of the reorientational relaxation.

How different are the dynamics of nanoconfined water?

We unravel the combined effects of confinement and surface interactions by studying the position dependent, time-resolved dynamic response functions in nano-containers of different shapes. Spectroscopic signatures are additionally studied through solvation dynamics by placing ionic and dipolar probes at varying distances from the enclosing surface. We find that the confined water molecules exhibit exotic dynamical features and stark differences from that in the bulk liquid. We employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulation to obtain the solvation time correlation function, non-Gaussian parameter, and non-linear response function that reveal the existence of heterogeneous and non-exponential dynamics with a strong sensitivity to both the size and the shape of the enclosure. Importantly, the slower long-time decay constant exhibits a non-monotonic spatial dependence. The initial ultrafast component is reminiscent of the same in the bulk, but it is found to have a different origin in the present systems. We perform shell-wise analyses to understand the microscopic origin of these observations and the range of the propagation of the surface induced effects.

Interaction and Dynamics in a Fully Biodegradable Glucose-Containing Naturally Abundant Deep Eutectic Solvent: Temperature-Dependent Time-Resolved Fluorescence Measurements

A new room-temperature deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of glucose, urea, and water has been prepared and its relaxation dynamics explored via temperature-dependent time-resolved fluorescence measurements employing hydrophilic and hydrophobic solute probes. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicate a glass transition temperature (T_g) of ∼236 K. Measured viscosity coefficients (η) vary from ∼600 to ∼100 cP in the temperature range 318 ≤ T/K ≤ 343 and exhibit Arrhenius-type temperature dependence with an activation energy of ∼65 kJ mol^-1. Interestingly, this DES forms a stable liquid at ∼300 K but is too viscous to be accurately measured by us below 318 K. Temperature-dependent dynamic fluorescence anisotropy measurements using hydrophobic and hydrophilic solutes of similar sizes reveal bi-exponential kinetics and Arrhenius-type temperature dependence for solute rotation times (⟨τ_r⟩) but with significantly decreased activation energies, ∼31 kJ mol^-1 (hydrophobic) and ∼21 kJ mol^-1 (hydrophilic). Deviation from hydrodynamics is further reflected in the strong fractional viscosity dependence of ⟨τ_r⟩: ⟨τ_r⟩ ∝ (η/T)^p with p ≈ 0.3-0.5, indicating pronounced temporal heterogeneity in the relaxation dynamics. Dynamic fluorescence Stokes shift measurements (temporal resolution ∼85 ps) produce dynamic shifts of ∼500-700 cm^-1, bi-exponential solvation energy relaxation with time constants in the range ∼0.2 ns and ∼4 ns, and estimated missing amplitudes of ∼65-75%. Impact of the density difference between a nonpolar solvent and this DES on the estimated missing amplitudes is explored via measuring the temperature-dependent densities and refractive indices of this DES. Lifetime measurements suggest considerable temperature dependence for the hydrophobic solute but no such dependence for the hydrophilic one. Excitation energy dependence of fluorescence emission of various solutes with widely different lifetimes indicates mild spatial heterogeneity for this DES.

Dynamics of linear molecules in water: Translation-rotation coupling in jump motion driven diffusion

We study by computer simulations, and by theory, the coupled rotational and translational dynamics of three important linear diatomic molecules, namely, carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and cyanide ion (CN^-) in water. Translational diffusion of these molecules is found to be strongly coupled to their own rotational dynamics which, in turn, are coupled to similar motions of the surrounding water. In particular, we find that coupled orientational jump motions play an important role in all three cases. While CO and NO show similar features, CN^- exhibits certain differences. Our results agree well with the known experimental values of the diffusion coefficient. We examined the validity of hydrodynamic predictions and found them to be inadequate, particularly for rotational diffusion. A mode coupling theory approach is developed and applied to understand the complexity of translation-rotation coupling.

Role of Water in the Reaction Mechanism and endo/exo Selectivity of 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions Elucidated by Quantum Chemistry and Machine Learning

Asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of azomethine ylides with activated olefins are among the most important and versatile methods for the synthesis of enantioenriched pyrroline and pyrrolidine derivatives. Despite both theoretical and practical importance, the role of water molecules in the reactivity and endo/exo selectivity remains unclear. To explore how water accelerates the reactions and improves the endo/exo selectivity of the cycloadditions of 1,3-dipole phthalazinium-2-dicyanomethanide (1) and two dipolarophiles, an ab initio-quality neural network potential that overcomes the computational bottleneck of explicitly considering water molecules was used. It is demonstrated that not only the nature of both the dipolarophile and the 1,3-dipole, but also the solvent medium, can perturb or even alter the reaction mechanism. An extreme case was found for the reaction of 1,3-dipole 1 with methyl vinyl ketone, in which the reaction mechanism changes from a concerted to a stepwise mode on going from MeCN to H₂ O as solvent, with formation of a zwitterionic intermediate that is a very shallow minimum on the energy surface. Thus, high stereocontrol can still be expected despite the stepwise nature of the mechanism. The results indicate that water can induce global polarization along the reaction coordinate and highlight the role of microsolvation effects and bulk-phase effects in reproducing the experimentally observed aqueous acceleration and enhanced endo/exo selectivity.

Anomalous water dynamics at surfaces and interfaces: synergistic effects of confinement and surface interactions

In nature, water is often found in contact with surfaces that are extended on the scale of molecule size but small on a macroscopic scale. Examples include lipid bilayers and reverse micelles as well as biomolecules like proteins, DNA and zeolites, to name a few. While the presence of surfaces and interfaces interrupts the continuous hydrogen bond network of liquid water, confinement on a mesoscopic scale introduces new features. Even when extended on a molecular scale, natural and biological surfaces often have features (like charge, hydrophobicity) that vary on the scale of the molecular diameter of water. As a result, many new and exotic features, which are not seen in the bulk, appear in the dynamics of water close to the surface. These different behaviors bear the signature of both water-surface interactions and of confinement. In other words, the altered properties are the result of the synergistic effects of surface-water interactions and confinement. Ultrafast spectroscopy, theoretical modeling and computer simulations together form powerful synergistic approaches towards an understanding of the properties of confined water in such systems as nanocavities, reverse micelles (RMs), water inside and outside biomolecules like proteins and DNA, and also between two hydrophobic walls. We shall review the experimental results and place them in the context of theory and simulations. For water confined within RMs, we discuss the possible interference effects propagating from opposite surfaces. Similar interference is found to give rise to an effective attractive force between two hydrophobic surfaces immersed and kept fixed at a separation of d, with the force showing an exponential dependence on this distance. For protein and DNA hydration, we shall examine a multitude of timescales that arise from frustration effects due to the inherent heterogeneity of these surfaces. We pay particular attention to the role of orientational correlations and modification of the same due to interaction with the surfaces.

Gating That Suppresses Charge Recombination-The Role of Mono-N-Arylated Diketopyrrolopyrrole

Suppressing the charge recombination (CR) that follows an efficient charge separation (CS) is of key importance for energy, electronics, and photonics applications. We focus on the role of dynamic gating for impeding CR in a molecular rotor, comprising an electron donor and acceptor directly linked via a single bond. The media viscosity has an unusual dual effect on the dynamics of CS and CR in this dyad. For solvents with intermediate viscosity, CR is 1.5-3 times slower than CS. Lowering the viscosity below ∼0.6 mPa s or increasing it above ∼10 mPa s makes CR 10-30 times slower than CS. Ring rotation around the donor-acceptor bond can account only for the trends observed for nonviscous solvents. Media viscosity, however, affects not only torsional but also vibrational modes. Suppressing predominantly slow vibrational modes by viscous solvents can impact the rates of CS and CR to a different extent. That is, an increase in the viscosity can plausibly suppress modes that are involved in the transition from the charge-transfer (CT) to the ground state, i.e., CR, but at the same time are not important for the transition from the locally excited to the CT state, i.e., CS. These results provide a unique example of synergy between torsional and vibronic modes and their drastic effects on charge-transfer dynamics, thus setting paradigms for controlling CS and CR.

Reaction Mechanism for Direct Proton Transfer from Carbonic Acid to a Strong Base in Aqueous Solution II: Solvent Coordinate-Dependent Reaction Path

The protonation of methylamine base CH3NH2 by carbonic acid H2CO3 within a hydrogen (H)-bonded complex in aqueous solution was studied via Car-Parrinello dynamics in the preceding paper (Daschakraborty, S.; Kiefer, P. M.; Miller, Y.; Motro, Y.; Pines, D.; Pines, E.; Hynes, J. T. J. Phys. Chem. B 2016, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpcb.5b12742). Here some important further details of the reaction path are presented, with specific emphasis on the water solvent's role. The overall reaction is barrierless and very rapid, on an ∼100 fs time scale, with the proton transfer (PT) event itself being very sudden (<10 fs). This transfer is preceded by the acid-base H-bond's compression, while the water solvent changes little until the actual PT occurrence; this results from the very strong driving force for the reaction, as indicated by the very favorable acid-protonated base ΔpKa difference. Further solvent rearrangement follows immediately the sudden PT's production of an incipient contact ion pair, stabilizing it by establishment of equilibrium solvation. The solvent water's short time scale ∼120 fs response to the incipient ion pair formation is primarily associated with librational modes and H-bond compression of water molecules around the carboxylate anion and the protonated base. This is consistent with this stabilization involving significant increase in H-bonding of hydration shell waters to the negatively charged carboxylate group oxygens' (especially the former H2CO3 donor oxygen) and the nitrogen of the positively charged protonated base's NH3(+).

Two-dimensional measurements of the solvent structural relaxation dynamics in dipolar solvation

Resonant-pump polarizability response spectroscopy (RP-PORS) is based on an optical heterodyne detected transient grating (OHD-TG) method with an additional resonant pump pulse. In RP-PORS, the resonant pump pulse excites the solute-solvent system and the subsequent relaxation of the solute-solvent system is monitored by the OHD-TG spectroscopy. RP-PORS is shown to be an excellent experimental tool to directly measure the solvent responses in solvation. In the present work, we extended our previous RP-PORS (Park et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 214-223) to measure time-dependent transient solvation polarizability (TSP) spectra with Coumarin153 (C153) in acetonitrile. The time-dependent TSP spectra showed how the different solvent intermolecular modes were involved in different stages of the solvation process. Most importantly, the inertial and diffusive components of the solvent intermolecular modes in solvation were found to be spectrally and temporally well-separated. In a dipolar solvation of C153, high-frequency inertial solvent modes were found to be driven instantaneously and decay on a subpicosecond timescale while low-frequency diffusive solvent modes were induced slowly and decayed on a picosecond timescale. Our present result is the first experimental manifestation of frequency-dependent solvent intermolecular response in a dipolar solvation.

Temperature dependence of vibrational frequency fluctuation of N(3) (-) in D(2)O

We have studied the temperature dependence of the vibrational frequency fluctuation of the antisymmetric stretching mode of N(3) (-) in D(2)O by three-pulse infrared (IR) photon echo experiments. IR pump-probe measurements were also carried out to investigate the population relaxation and the orientational relaxation of the same band. It was found that the time-correlation function (TCF) of the frequency fluctuation of this mode is well described by a biexponential function with a quasistatic term. The faster decay component has a time constant of about 0.1 ps, and the slower component varies from 1.4 to 1.1 ps in the temperature range from 283 to 353 K. This result indicates that liquid dynamics related to the frequency fluctuation are not highly sensitive to temperature. We discuss the relationship between the temperature dependence of the vibrational frequency fluctuation and that of the molecular motion of the system to investigate the molecular origin of the frequency fluctuation of the solute. We compare the temperature dependence of the frequency fluctuation with that of other dynamics such as dielectric relaxation of water. In contrast to the Debye dielectric relaxation time of D(2)O, the two time constants of the TCF of the frequency fluctuation do not exhibit strong temperature dependence. We propose a simple theoretical model for the frequency fluctuation in solutions based on perturbation theory and the dipole-dipole interaction between the vibrational mode of the solute and the solvent molecules. This model suggests that the neighboring solvent molecules in the vicinity of the solute play an important role in the frequency fluctuation. We suggest that the picosecond component of the frequency fluctuation results from structural fluctuation of the hydrogen-bonding network in water.

Angular momentum dependent friction slows down rotational relaxation under nonequilibrium conditions

It has recently been shown that relaxation of the rotational energy of hot nonequilibrium photofragments (i) slows down significantly with the increase of their initial rotational temperature and (ii) differs dramatically from the relaxation of the equilibrium rotational energy correlation function, manifesting thereby the breakdown of the linear response description [A. C. Moskun et al., Science 311, 1907 (2006)]. We demonstrate that this phenomenon may be caused by the angular momentum dependence of rotational friction. We have developed the generalized Fokker-Planck equation whose rotational friction depends upon angular momentum algebraically. The calculated rotational correlation functions correspond well to their counterparts obtained via molecular dynamics simulations in a broad range of initial nonequilibrium conditions. It is suggested that the angular momentum dependence of friction should be taken into account while describing rotational relaxation far from equilibrium.

Limiting ionic conductivity and solvation dynamics in formamide

A self-consistent microscopic theory has been used to calculate the limiting ionic conductivity of unipositive rigid ions in formamide at different temperatures. The calculated results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The above theory can also predict successfully the experimentally observed temperature dependence of total ionic conductivity of a given uniunivalent electrolyte in formamide. The effects of dynamic polar solvent response on ionic conductivity have been investigated by studying the time dependent progress of solvation of a polarity probe dissolved in formamide. The intermolecular vibration (libration) band that is often detected in the range of 100-200 cm(-1) in formamide is found to play an important role in determining both the conductivity and the ultrafast polar solvent response in formamide. The time dependent decay of polar solvation energy in formamide has been studied at three different temperatures, namely, at 283.15, 298.15, and 328.15 K. While the predicted decay at 298.15 K is in good agreement with the available experimental data, the calculated results at the other two temperatures should be tested against experiments.

Flow-induced transverse electrical potential across an assembly of gold nanoparticles

We report the generation of a potential difference, of the order of tens of millivolts, induced by the flow of polar liquids over an assembly of gold nanoparticles. The device consisted of two conducting glass plates, one of which contained the gold nanoparticle multilayer assembly. The potential generated is in transverse direction to the flow and is dependent on the nature of the flowing liquid. We propose a simple theoretical model to account qualitatively for the generation of the flow-induced transverse potential.

Equilibrium solvation in quadrupolar solvents

We present a microscopic theory of equilibrium solvation in solvents with zero dipole moment and nonzero quadrupole moment (quadrupolar solvents). The theory is formulated in terms of autocorrelation functions of the quadrupolar polarization (structure factors). It can be therefore applied to an arbitrary dense quadrupolar solvent for which the structure factors are defined. We formulate a simple analytical perturbation treatment for the structure factors. The solute is described by coordinates, radii, and partial charges of constituent atoms. The theory is tested on Monte Carlo simulations of solvation in model quadrupolar solvents. It is also applied to the calculation of the activation barrier of electron transfer reactions in a cleft-shaped donor-bridge-acceptor complex dissolved in benzene with the structure factors of quadrupolar polarization obtained from molecular-dynamics simulations.

QUANTUM MODE-COUPLING THEORY: Formulation and Applications to Normal and Supercooled Quantum Liquids

▪ Abstract  We review our recent efforts to formulate and study a mode-coupling approach to real-time dynamic fluctuations in quantum liquids. Comparison is made between the theory and recent neutron scattering experiments performed on liquid ortho-deuterium and para-hydrogen. We discuss extensions of the theory to supercooled and glassy states where quantum fluctuations compete with thermal fluctuations. Experimental scenarios for quantum glassy liquids are briefly discussed.

Ultrafast molecular dynamics of liquid aromatic molecules and the mixtures with CCl4

The ultrafast molecular dynamics of liquid aromatic molecules, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene, and 1,3-diphenylpropane, and the mixtures with CCl(4) have been investigated by means of femtosecond optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy. The picosecond Kerr transients of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and cumene and the mixtures with CCl(4) show a biexponential feature. 1,3-Diphenylpropane and the mixtures with CCl(4) show triexponential picosecond Kerr transients. The slow relaxation time constants of the aromatic molecules and the mixtures with CCl(4) are qualitatively described by the Stoke-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic model. The ultrafast dynamics have been discussed based on the Kerr spectra in the frequency range of 0-800 cm(-1) obtained by the Fourier transform analysis of the Kerr transients. The line shapes of the low-frequency intermolecular spectra located at 0-180 cm(-1) frequency range have been analyzed by two Brownian oscillators ( approximately 11 cm(-1) and approximately 45 cm(-1) peaks) and an antisymmetric Gaussian function ( approximately 65 cm(-1) peak). The spectrum shape of 1,3-diphenylpropane is quite different from the spectrum shapes of the other aromatic molecules for the low magnitude of the low-frequency mode of 1,3-diphenylpropane and/or an intramolecular vibration. Although the concentration dependences of the low- and intermediate-frequency intermolecular modes (Brownian oscillators) do not show a significant trend, the width of high-frequency intermolecular mode (antisymmetric Gaussian) becomes narrower with the higher CCl(4) concentration for all the aromatics mixtures with CCl(4). The result indicates that the inhomogeneity of the intermolecular vibrational mode in aromatics/CCl(4) mixtures is decreasing with the lower concentration of aromatics. The intramolecular vibrational modes of the aromatic molecules observed in the Kerr spectra are also shown with the calculation results based on the density functional theory.

Mode-coupling theory for reaction dynamics in liquids

A theory for chemical reaction dynamics in condensed phase systems based on the generalized Langevin formalism of Grote and Hynes [J. Chem. Phys. 73, 2715 (1980)] is presented. A microscopic approach to calculate the dynamic friction is developed within the framework of a combination of kinetic and mode-coupling theories. The approach provides a powerful analytic tool to study chemical reactions in realistic condensed phase environments. The accuracy of the approach is tested for a model isomerization reaction in a Lennard-Jones fluid. Good agreement is obtained for the transmission coefficient at different solvent densities, in comparison with numerical simulations based on the reactive-flux approach.
