Vibrational Spectroscopy and Structural Analysis of V+(C2H6)n Clusters (n = 1-4)

The vibrational structure and binding motifs of vanadium cation-ethane clusters, V⁺(C₂H₆)_n, for n = 1-4 are probed using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm^-1). Comparison of spectra to scaled harmonic frequency spectra obtained using density functional theory suggests that ethane exhibits two primary binding motifs when interacting with the vanadium cation: an end-on η² configuration and a side-on configuration. Determining the denticity of the side on isomer is complicated by the rotational motion of ethane, implying that structural analysis based solely on Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface minimizations is insufficient and that a more sophisticated vibrationally adiabatic approach is necessary to interpret spectra. The lower-energy side-on configuration predominates in smaller clusters, but the end-on configuration becomes important for larger clusters as it helps to maintain a roughly square-planar geometry about the central vanadium. Proximate C-H bonds exhibit elongation and large red-shifts when compared to bare ethane, particularly in the case of the side-on isomer, demonstrating initial effects of C-H bond activation, which are underestimated by scaled harmonic frequency calculations. Tagging several of the clusters with argon and nitrogen results in nontrivial effects. The high binding energy of N₂ can lead to the displacement of ethane from a side-on configuration into an end-on configuration. The presence of either one or two Ar or N₂ can impact the overall symmetry of the cluster, which can alter the potential energy surface for ethane rotation in the side-on isomer and may affect the accessibility of low-lying electronic excited states of V⁺.

Dynamics of the Oxygen Atom Transfer Reaction between Carbon Dioxide and the Tantalum Cation

The understanding of fundamental atomic-level processes often requires well-defined model systems. The oxygen atom transfer from CO₂ to a transition metal cation in the gas phase presents such a model system. We investigate the reaction of Ta⁺ + CO₂ for which the formation of TaO⁺ is highly efficient and attributed to multistate reactivity. Here, we study the atomistic dynamics of the oxygen atom transfer reaction by recording experimental energy and angle differential cross sections by crossed beam velocity map imaging supported by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Product ion velocity distributions are dominated by signatures for indirect dynamics, despite the reaction being highly exothermic. Product kinetic energy distributions show little dependence on additional collision energy even with only four atoms involved, which hints at dynamical trapping behind a submerged barrier.

Experiment and Theory Clarify: Sc+ Receives One Oxygen Atom from SO2 to Form ScO+, which Proves to be a Catalyst for the Hidden Oxygen-Exchange with SO2

Using Fourier‐transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, it was experimentally determined that Sc⁺ in the highly diluted gas phase reacts with SO₂ to form ScO⁺ and SO. By ¹⁸O labeling, ScO⁺ was shown to play the role of a catalyst when further reacting with SO₂ in a Mars‐van Krevelen‐like (MvK) oxygen exchange process, where a solid catalyst actively reacts with the substrate but emerges apparently unchanged at the end of the cycle. High‐level quantum chemical calculations confirmed that the multi‐step process to form ScO⁺ and SO is exoergic and that all intermediates and transition states in between are located energetically below the entrance level. The reaction starts from the triplet surface; although three spin‐crossing points with minimal energy have been identified by computational means, there is no evidence that a two‐state scenario is involved in the course of the reaction, by which the reactants could switch from the triplet to the singlet surface and back. Pivotal to the oxygen exchange reaction of ScO⁺ with SO₂ is the occurrence of a highly symmetric four‐membered cyclic intermediate by which two oxygen atoms become equivalent.

High-Level Ab Initio Predictions for the Ionization Energy, Bond Dissociation Energies, and Heats of Formation of Vanadium Methylidyne Radical and Its Cation (VCH/VCH+)

The ionization energy (IE) of VCH, the 0 K V-CH/VC-H bond dissociation energies (D₀s), and the heats of formation at 0 K (ΔH_f0^°) and 298 K (ΔH_f298^°) for VCH/VCH⁺ are predicted by the wave function-based CCSDTQ/CBS approach. This composite-coupled cluster method includes full quadruple excitations in conjunction with the approximation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The contributions of zero-point vibrational energy, core-valence (CV) correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and scalar relativistic corrections are taken into account. The present calculations show that adiabatic IE(VCH) = 6.785 eV and demonstrate excellent agreement with an IE value of 6.774 7 ± 0.000 1 eV measured with two-color laser-pulsed field ionization-photoelectron spectroscopy. The CCSDT and MRCI+Q methods which include CV correlations give the best predictions of harmonic frequencies: ω₂ (ω₂⁺) (bending) = 534 (650) and 564 (641) cm^-1 and the V-CH stretching ω₃ (ω₃⁺) = 835 (827) and 856 (857) cm^-1 compared with the experimental values. In this work, we offer a streamlined CCSDTQ/CBS approach which shows an error limit (≤20 meV) matching with previous benchmarking efforts for reliable IE and D₀ predictions for VCH/VCH⁺. The CCSDTQ/CBS D₀(V⁺-CH) - D₀(V-CH) = -0.012 eV and D₀(VC⁺-H) - D₀(VC-H) = 0.345 eV are in good accord with the experimentally derived values of -0.028 4 ± 0.000 1 and 0.355 9 ± 0.000 1 eV, respectively. The present study has demonstrated that the CCSDTQ/CBS protocol can be readily extended to investigate triatomic molecules containing 3d-metals.

Density functional and ab initio calculations, along with photodissociation spectroscopy and ion imaging of MnO⁺ from 21,300 to 33,900 cm^-1, are used to probe the photodissociation dynamics and bond strength of the manganese oxide cation (MnO⁺). These studies confirm the theoretical ground state (⁵Π) and determine the spin-orbit constant ( A' = 14 cm^-1) of the dominant optically accessible excited state (⁵Π) in the region. Photodissociation via this excited ⁵Π state results in ground state Mn⁺ (⁷S) + O (³P) products. At energies above 30,000 cm^-1, the Mn⁺ (⁵S) + O (³P) channel is energetically accessible and becomes the preferred dissociation pathway. The bond dissociation energy ( D₀ = 242 ± 5 kJ/mol) of MnO⁺ is measured from several images of each photofragmentation channel and compared to theory, resolving a disagreement in previous measurements. MRCI+Q calculations are much more successful in predicting the observed spectrum than TD-DFT or EOM-CCSD calculations.

Spectroscopy and formation of lanthanum-hydrocarbon radicals formed by association and carbon-carbon bond cleavage of isoprene

La atom reaction with isoprene is carried out in a laser-vaporization molecular beam source. The reaction yields an adduct as the major product and C-C cleaved and dehydrogenated species as the minor ones. La(C₅H₈), La(C₂H₂), and La(C₃H₄) are characterized with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The MATI spectra of all three species exhibit a strong origin band and several weak vibronic bands corresponding to La-ligand stretch and ligand-based bend excitations. La(C₅H₈) is a five-membered metallacycle, whereas La(C₂H₂) and La(C₃H₄) are three-membered rings. All three metallacycles prefer a doublet ground state with a La 6s¹-based valence electron configuration and a singlet ion. The five-membered metallacycle is formed through La addition and isoprene isomerization, whereas the two three-membered rings are produced by La addition and insertion, hydrogen migration, and carbon-carbon bond cleavage.
