Quantum Dynamical Resonances in Chemical Reactions: From A + BC to Polyatomic Systems

State-to-State Dynamics in Mode-Specific Reactions of Cl + CH3D(v1-I, v1-II, and v4 = 1; |10⟩): Loss of Memory or Not

Several decades of the study of reaction dynamics culminate in the concept of mode specificity and bond selectivity in polyatomic systems. Until very recently, the main concern of those studies has been total reactivity and little attention has been paid to the mode-specific effects on the more detailed product-state and angular distributions. Conventional wisdom would anticipate that the fine detail should reveal a more pronounced mode dependency. However, a few recent studies showed that the product distributions could appear to be surprisingly insensitive to the modes of internal excitation of reagents. This counterintuitive finding led to a concept of loss of memory. Here, we present detailed experimental results in the reactions of the Cl atom with three distinct stretching-excited CH₃D(v_CH3 = 1) reagents. In conjunction with the previous reports on various aspects of this reaction, such a comprehensive set of data enables us to perform an in-depth examination of the validity of this new concept.

Active learning of potential-energy surfaces of weakly bound complexes with regression-tree ensembles

Several pool-based active learning (AL) algorithms were employed to model potential-energy surfaces (PESs) with a minimum number of electronic structure calculations. Theoretical and empirical results suggest that superior strategies can be obtained by sampling molecular structures corresponding to large uncertainties in their predictions while at the same time not deviating much from the true distribution of the data. To model PESs in an AL framework, we propose to use a regression version of stochastic query by forest, a hybrid method that samples points corresponding to large uncertainties while avoiding collecting too many points from sparse regions of space. The algorithm is implemented with decision trees that come with relatively small computational costs. We empirically show that this algorithm requires around half the data to converge to the same accuracy in comparison to the uncertainty-based query-by-committee algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm is fully automatic and does not require any prior knowledge of the PES. Simulations on a 6D PES of pyrrole(H₂O) show that <15 000 configurations are enough to build a PES with a generalization error of 16 cm^-1, whereas the final model with around 50 000 configurations has a generalization error of 11 cm^-1.

Pair-Correlated Imaging of Cl + CH3D(v4, v1-I, v1-II = 1, |jK⟩) → CH2D(vi) + HCl(v)

The title reactions were studied at a collisional energy of 10.0 kcal mol^-1 in a crossed-beam, product-imaging experiment. In terms of integral cross sections, all three CH₃-stretching excited CH₃D(v_CH3 = 1) reagents promote the reactivity in forming the predominant product pair of (v_CH2D, v_HCl)_s = (0₀, 0/1)_s with a prominent mode-propensity of v₄ > v₁-I > v₁-II, where v₄ denotes the degenerate mode of CH₃ asymmetric stretch and v₁-I and v₁-II are a pair of Fermi-coupled, symmetric-stretch states. The vibrationally excited CH₂D product pairs of (6₁, 0)_s, (1₁, 0)_s, and (3₁, 0)_s appear to be minor channels and display a reverse propensity of v₄ < v₁-I ≈ v₁-II for (6₁, 0)_s, while v₄ > v₁-I for (1₁, 0)_s. Based on the observed angular distributions, we conjecture that, irrespective of the initial mode of excitation, the (0₀, 0)_s product pair proceeds by a direct abstraction of the peripheral type, whereas the (0₀,1)_s pair is mediated via a resonance pathway. Intriguingly, the angular distributions of the excited product pairs-(6₁, 0)_s, (1₁, 0)_s, and (3₁, 0)_s-are remarkably similar and comprise the traits of both the peripheral mechanism and resonance pathway. Possible interpretation and implication are suggested. In addition, due to the spectral overlap of the REMPI bands and heavily congested image features, a robust data analysis method is developed, which enables us to extract the dynamics attributes of a weak feature buried in the proximate, more intense ones with high fidelity.

From Reactive Rainbow to Dynamic Resonance Well

Scattering resonance is a fascinating phenomenon which manifests as a peak or a dip in an observable as a function of collisional energy (E_c). Its occurrence requires a potential well to support the resonance states. In this regard, reactive resonance is unusual in that it can exist in a reaction with unbound Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface, on which the quasi-bound states are dynamically trapped-meaning that some energy is temporarily tied to the other degrees of freedom than the reaction coordinate. The concept of vibrational adiabaticity has been the cornerstone in understanding this phenomenon, for which the vibrationally adiabatic well depth is of primary concern. Recent studies on the F + CH₃D reaction have accumulated compelling evidence for a dominant resonance-mediated pathway at low E_c as well as for a rainbow feature in pair-correlated angular distribution at higher E_c. Here, we report an in-depth study to not only substantiate both claims but also, more importantly, make the first attempt to quantify the vibrationally adiabatic well depth directly from the observed rainbow structure and then compare with the theoretical prediction.

Advances and New Challenges to Bimolecular Reaction Dynamics Theory

Dynamics of bimolecular reactions in the gas phase are of foundational importance in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, interstellar chemistry, and plasma chemistry. These collision-induced chemical transformations are a sensitive probe of the underlying potential energy surface(s). Despite tremendous progress in past decades, our understanding is still not complete. In this Perspective, we survey the recent advances in theoretical characterization of bimolecular reaction dynamics, stimulated by new experimental observations, and identify key new challenges.

Imaging a Resonance-Dominant Polyatomic Reaction: F + CH3D → CH3(ν2 = 2) + DF(ν)

The title reaction was studied in a crossed-beam scattering experiment at the collisional energy ( E_c) ranging from 0.46 to 4.53 kcal mol^-1. Using a time-sliced velocity-imaging technique, both the pair-correlated integral and differential cross sections were measured. On the basis of the observed structures in state-specific excitation functions and the patterns in the E_c evolution of product angular distributions, we inferred that the title reaction proceeds predominantly via a resonance-mediated pathway, in contrast to the previous findings in the isotopically analogous reactions where the alternative direct abstraction pathway often dominates the reactivity. Despite the complexity of numerous scattering resonances involved in this six-atom reaction, extending our understanding of the isolated resonance in the analogous benchmark F + HD (H₂) reaction enables us to propose plausible mechanistic origins for the formation as well as the decay of the complicated overlapped resonances.

A review of dynamical resonances in A + BC chemical reactions

The concept of the transition state has played an important role in the field of chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics. Reactive resonances in the transition-state region can dramatically enhance the reaction probability; thus investigation of the reactive resonances has attracted great attention from chemical physicists for many decades. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress made in probing the elusive resonance phenomenon in the simple A  +  BC reaction and understanding its nature, especially in the benchmark F/Cl  +  H₂ and their isotopic variants. The signatures of reactive resonances in the integral cross section, differential cross section (DCS), forward- and backward-scattered DCS, and anion photodetachment spectroscopy are comprehensively presented in individual prototype reactions. The dynamical origins of reactive resonances are also discussed in this review, based on information on the wave function in the transition-state region obtained by time-dependent quantum wave-packet calculations.

Reactive and Nonreactive Feshbach Resonances Accessed by Photodetachment of FH2O(-)

The photodetachment of the FH2O(-) anion is investigated quantum mechanically on accurate full-dimensional potential energy surfaces of the two lowest-lying electronic states of FH2O. The calculated photoelectron spectrum possesses both broad and sharp features, corresponding to reactive and nonreactive Feshbach resonances. The former extend to both reactant and product channels over the transition state, while the latter are supported by a hydrogen bonded HO-HF well in the product channel. Many of the resonances are assignable with quantum numbers for the stretching and bending modes of the HO-HF complex as well as the H-F vibration. The implications of these resonances in the F + H2O ↔ HF + HO reaction are discussed.

Quantum dynamical resonances in low-energy CO(j = 0) + He inelastic collisions

In molecular collisions, long-lived complexes may be formed that correspond to quasi-bound states in the van der Waals potential and give rise to peaks in the collision energy-dependent cross-sections. They are known as 'resonances' and their experimental detection remains difficult because their signatures are extremely challenging to resolve. Here, we show a complete characterization of quantum-dynamical resonances occurring in CO-He inelastic collisions with rotational CO(j = 0->1) excitation. Crossed-beam scattering experiments were performed at collision energies as low as 4 cm(-1), equivalent to a temperature of 4 K. Resonance structures in the measured cross-sections were identified by comparison with quantum-mechanical calculations. The excellent agreement found confirms that the potential energy surfaces describing the CO-He van der Waals interaction are perfectly suitable for calculating state-to-state (de)excitation rate coefficients at the very low temperatures needed in chemical modelling of the interstellar medium. We also computed these rate coefficients.

Extremely short-lived reaction resonances in Cl + HD (v = 1) → DCl + H due to chemical bond softening

The Cl + H2 reaction is an important benchmark system in the study of chemical reaction dynamics that has always appeared to proceed via a direct abstraction mechanism, with no clear signature of reaction resonances. Here we report a high-resolution crossed–molecular beam study on the Cl + HD (v = 1, j = 0) → DCl + H reaction (where v is the vibrational quantum number and j is the rotational quantum number). Very few forward scattered products were observed. However, two distinctive peaks at collision energies of 2.4 and 4.3 kilocalories per mole for the DCl (v′ = 1) product were detected in the backward scattering direction. Detailed quantum dynamics calculations on a highly accurate potential energy surface suggested that these features originate from two very short-lived dynamical resonances trapped in the peculiar H-DCl (v′ = 2) vibrational adiabatic potential wells that result from chemical bond softening. We anticipate that dynamical resonances trapped in such wells exist in many reactions involving vibrationally excited molecules.
