Sleep Increases Susceptibility to the Misinformation Effect

If you express it in the form of a negation, you can expect an effect similar to misinformation

The primary goal of the presented research was to investigate how processing post-event information affects memory of details in an event viewed on video. We used two forms of post-event information: classic misinformation (changing or implanting new information into memory) and a new form that involves a correct explicit or implicit negation of the existence of an object in the video. We followed the three-step procedure used in studies on the misinformation effect, with a final memory test that was either immediate or delayed by a week and consisted in indicating which objects appeared in the video. We replicated the misinformation effect. More importantly, in the delayed test condition, both explicitly and implicitly negated objects were falsely recalled more often than unmentioned objects. These results indicate that it is possible to induce negation-related false memories; they also show that memory is impaired by negated post-event information or misleading post-event information.

Sleep and interrogation: does losing sleep impact criminal history disclosure?

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Despite centuries of using sleep deprivation to interrogate, there is virtually no scientific evidence on how sleep shapes behavior within interrogation settings. To evaluate the impact of sleeplessness on participants' behavior during investigative interviews, an experimental study examined the impact of sleep restriction on disclosure of past illegal behavior.

METHODS

Healthy participants from a university community (N = 143) either maintained or curbed their sleep (up to 4 h a night) across 2 days with sleep monitored via actigraphy. They were then asked to disclose past illegal acts and interviewed about them. Next, they were reinterviewed following an example of a detailed memory account (model statement). Disclosures were blindly coded for quantity and quality by two independent raters.

RESULTS

Sleep-restricted individuals reported similar offenses, but less information during their disclosure with slightly less precision. Model statement increased disclosure but did not reduce the inhibiting impact of sleep loss. Mediation analysis confirmed the causal role of sleep as responsible for experimental differences in amount of information, and participants' reports suggested impaired motivation to recall information played a role.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that even moderate sleep loss can inhibit criminal disclosure during interviews, point to motivational factors as responsible, and suggest investigators should be cautious when interrogating sleepy participants.

The different roles of sleep on false memory formation between young and older adults

Aging is accompanied by an increase in the probability of false memory. However, what role sleep plays in the age effect in false memory is less understood. Our study utilized a simplified conjoint recognition (SCR)-based Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm to investigate the role of sleep on false memory in young and older adults. The results showed that sleep effect in false memory was modulated by age, manifested as sleep increased young adults' falsely recognized critical lures, while it reduced older adults'. In addition, in a more fine-grained analysis, the results of multinomial processing tree (MPT) modeling further revealed that young adults were more likely to retrieve memory based on gist traces than older adults, and young adults were more susceptible to guess a probe as "old" than older adults in the sleep condition. Combined findings from the number and ratio of falsely recognized critical lures and the MPT modeling, the current study suggested that sleep might increase young adults' false memory via gist extraction, while it decreased older adults' false memory via verbatim trace consolidation. The study contributes to a comprehensive view on the age-by-sleep effect on false recognition, with the segregation of cognitive components of verbatim memory, gist memory, and response bias.

Sleep and mindfulness meditation as they relate to false memory

By a systematic analysis of the current literature, we compare two states of sleep and meditation in terms of their role in the formation or suppression of Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory. We aim to suggest that the occurrence of false memory under these two states is a result of reinforcing some abilities and changes in cognitive systems which can ultimately improve some aspects of cognitive functions. In our analogy, we propose that: (1) both sleep and meditation may improve source monitoring ability whose failure is one of the most important mechanisms in producing false memories, and (2) despite improvement in source monitoring ability, adaptive cognitive processes, as mechanisms which are common in sleep and meditation, can still produce false memories. In conclusion, we propose that in spite of their contribution to false memory through adaptive processes, the beneficial role of sleep and meditation in cognition may be more prominent than their harmful role.

Sculpting memory during sleep: concurrent consolidation and forgetting

There is compelling evidence that sleep actively supports the formation of long-lasting memory representations. Experimental cuing of memories proved that neural replay of representations during sleep plays a causal role for this consolidation, which has also been shown to promote neocortical synaptic plasticity and spine formation. Concurrently, sleep has been proposed to facilitate forgetting through processes of synaptic renormalisation. This view received indirect support by findings in humans of sleep enhancing TMS-evoked plasticity and capabilities for encoding new information. First direct behavioural evidence of sleep inducing forgetting has only recently emerged after encoding large amounts of stimuli in adults. We propose forgetting complements sleep-dependent consolidation and facilitates gist abstraction especially at high memory loads, when reactivation-based consolidation reaches capacity limits.
