Abstract
PURPOSE We applied a previously established common T-score metric for patient-reported and performance-based physical function (PF), offering the unique opportunity to directly compare measurement type-specific patterns of associations with potential laboratory-based, psychosocial, sociodemographic, and health-related determinants in hemodialysis patients. METHODS We analyzed baseline data from the CONVINCE trial (N = 1,360), a multinational randomized controlled trial comparing high-flux hemodialysis with high-dose hemodiafiltration. To explore the associations of potential determinants with performance-based versus patient-reported PF, we conducted multiple linear regression (backward elimination with cross-validation and Lasso regression). We used standardized T-scores as estimated from the PROMIS PF short-form 4a (patient-reported PF) and the Physical Performance Test (performance-based PF) as dependent variables. RESULTS Performance-based and patient-reported PF were both significantly associated with a laboratory marker-based indicator of muscle mass (simplified creatinine index), although the effects were relatively small (partial f2 = 0.04). Age was negatively associated with PF; the effect size was larger for performance-based (partial f2 = 0.12) than for patient-reported PF (partial f2 = 0.08). Compared to performance-based PF, patient-reported PF showed a stronger association with self-reported health domains, particularly pain interference and fatigue. When using the individual difference between patient-reported and performance-based T-scores as outcome, we found that younger age and more fatigue were associated with lower patient-reported PF compared to performance-based PF (small effect size). CONCLUSION Patient-reported and performance-based assessments were similarly associated with an objective marker of physical impairment in hemodialysis patients. Age and fatigue may result in discrepancies when comparing performance-based and patient-reported scores on the common PF scale. Abstract
While classical resistance exercise is an effective way to improve strength and control postural sway, it may not be suitable for some elderly individuals with specific health disorders (e.g., aneurysms). Therefore, there is a need to explore alternative modalities. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of sensorimotor training on muscle strength and postural control in the female elderly population and subsequently compare these effects with a traditional combined resistance-endurance training program. A total of 34 healthy, active elderly women aged from 65 to 75 years, (average age 72.7 ± 4.4 years, height 161.6 ± 5.1 cm, and weight 66.9 ± 8.4 kg) were randomly assigned to three groups undergoing different 10-week interventions: the resistance-endurance training (RET, n = 11), the sensorimotor training (SMT, n = 12) and the control group (COG, n = 11). Prior to and after the interventions all participants underwent tests of maximal voluntary contraction of the dominant and non-dominant leg; postural sway tests with open and closed eyes; novel visual feedback balance test; 10-meter maximal walking speed (10 mMWS) and stair climb test. A T-test and repeated measures ANOVA were used, followed by the Bonferroni post hoc test, to compare the pre and post-measurements and assess differences in gains between groups. Results showed a significant main effect of time on strength (p < 0.001). In addition, significant differences in time × group interaction on strength (p < 0.01), postural control (p < 01), and ascendant and descended vertical speed (p < 0.001) were observed. Besides, the RET group improved significantly the maximal voluntary contraction of both dominant (16.3%, p ≤ 0.01) and non-dominant leg (10.9%, p ≤ 0.05). SMT group improved maximal voluntary contraction of both dominant (16.6%, p ≤ 0.001) and non-dominant leg (12.7%, p ≤ 0.01). In addition, they also improved mean velocity of the centre of pressure (COP) in postural sway test with eyes open (24.2%, p ≤ 0.05) as well as eyes closed (29.2%, p ≤ 0.05), mean distance of COP in novel visual feedback balance test (37.5%, p ≤ 0.001), ascendant and descended vertical velocity (13.6%, p ≤ 0.001 and 17.8%, p ≤ 0.001, respectively). Results show not only resistance training but sensorimotor intervention boosts strength too. This intervention also enhances postural control and functional abilities for both ascending and descending movements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) emerges as a promising therapeutic intervention for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet its impact on physical function remains insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the relative effects of tDCS for physical function in patients with KOA. METHODS Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Database were explored as of August 2023 to identify studies to be included in the current systematic review and metaanalysis. Randomized controlled trials in patients with KOA comparing tDCS with placebo were included. The outcomes defined were measures of physical function (questionnaires, gait, or physical performance). The Risk of Bias tool was used to assess bias in the randomized controlled trials, whereas the PEDro scale was applied for methodological quality, and the certainty of evidence for each outcome was assessed through GRADE. Results for each outcome were synthesized using meta-analysis (random-effects model, I2-test for heterogeneity) and a subgroup analysis was performed to improve the sensitivity of the results and to explore potential moderating factors of the effect sizes. RESULTS Ten studies with good to excellent quality were included, analyzing a total of 628 participants. Regarding physical function, tDCS showed a favorable effect (ES: -0.58; 95%CI -0.82, -0.33; I2: 52.1%) with a low risk of bias and low to moderate certainty of evidence. The concurrent application of physiotherapy interventions and tDCS improved the effects on pain and function. Applying physiotherapy interventions, as well as adding peripheral currents, increased the effect sizes (ES: -0.95, k = 3, p = .018; ES: -0.95, k = 4 p = .001, respectively). The pattern of application of the tDCS, either daily or in alternate days, did not moderate the effect size (p = .619). Meta-regression revealed that the number of tDCS sessions did not moderate the effect size either (p = .242). CONCLUSION The tDCS might be a promising therapeutic approach to enhance physical function in subjects affected with KOA. However, further systematic reviews with meta-analyses should be performed with standardized and proven-efficacy physiotherapy programs, as well as with long-term results, to ascertain whether the improvement may be sustained over time. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing tDCS interventions for enhanced outcomes in the management of KOA.Protocol available via PROSPERO [CRD42023440676].

Abstract
Introduction We investigated the reliability and validity of the 2-min step test (2MST) for assessing the exercise endurance of individuals with stroke and lower-limb musculoskeletal disorders. Participants and methods The participants were 39 individuals with stroke and 42 with lower-limb musculoskeletal disorders (mainly hip fractures) from the convalescent rehabilitation wards of four hospitals. The concurrent validity and congruence between the 2MST and the 6-min walk test (6MWT) and construct validity by hypotheses testing, including mobility and lower limb muscle strength, were also confirmed. A subset of participants (stroke-group, n = 15; musculoskeletal-group, n = 19) underwent a retest 2MST for our evaluation of relative and absolute reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC1,1) and Bland-Altman plot. Results Both groups showed a moderate correlation between the 2MST and 6MWT (ρ = 0.55-0.60), but the congruence was not sufficient. The 6MWT was correlated with mobility in both groups and with muscle strength in the stroke group, whereas the 2MST did not show a significant correlation with mobility. The relative reliability was excellent in both groups (ICC1,1 > 0.9). In terms of absolute reliability, the width of the limit of agreement was 18.8% for the stroke group and 15.4% for the musculoskeletal group, relative to their respective sample means of 2MST. A fixed bias was identified in the stroke group, in which step counts increased by 6.5 steps upon retesting. Discussion Our analyses revealed that the 2MST is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the exercise endurance of individuals with stroke or lower-limb musculoskeletal disorders. However, it is necessary to validate the absolute reliability observed herein by using a larger sample size. In addition, when assessing the exercise endurance of individuals with stroke, it may be necessary to consider the potential bias of an increased step count during retesting.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease with high socioeconomical costs. In Denmark, standard rehabilitation (SR) consists of a combination of patient education and supervised physical exercise involving a standardized neuromuscular training program. As an evidence-based alternative, high-load (>70% 1RM) resistance training (HIRT) has shown positive rehabilitation effects in knee-OA but may not be tolerated in all patients (~25%) due to knee joint pain. However, low-load resistance training (20-40% 1RM) with concurrent partial blood-flow restriction (BFR) appears to produce effects similar to HIRT yet involving reduced joint pain during and after exercise. The aim is to examine the effect of low-load BFR training compared to SR on pain, thigh muscle mass and muscle function in adults with knee-OA. We hypothesize that 12 weeks of BFR will lead to superior improvements in pain, muscle mass and mechanical muscle function compared to SR. METHODS AND ANALYSIS 90 participants diagnosed with radiographic knee-OA will be randomized to either BFR or SR twice a week for 12 weeks. BFR will consist of two selected lower limb strength exercises performed with an inflated pneumatic occlusion cuff. Intervention procedures in SR consist of a full 8 weeks GLA:D course followed by 4 weeks of team group training. Primary outcome variable is the change in KOOS-Pain subscale from baseline to 12 weeks. Secondary outcome variables are changes in pain sensitivity, functional performance, muscle mass and mechanical muscle function. Intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses will be conducted. One-way analysis of variance will be performed to evaluate between-group changes. Pre-to-post intervention comparisons will be analyzed using a mixed linear model. Regression analysis will be performed to evaluate potential associations between selected outcome variables.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To quantify and compare associations and relationships between self-rated and tested assessments of mainly mobility-related physical function in different diagnoses. DESIGN Six longitudinal cohort studies before and after inpatient rehabilitation. PATIENTS Patients with whiplash-associated disorder (n = 71), low back pain (n = 121), fibromyalgia (n = 84), lipoedema (n = 27), lymphoedema (n = 78), and post-acute coronary syndrome (n = 64). METHODS Physical function was measured with the self-rated Short-Form 36 Physical functioning (SF-36 PF) and with the tested 6-Min Walk Distance (6MWD) and assessed by correlation coefficients. Across the 6 cohorts, the relationship between the 2 scores was compared using the ratio between them. RESULTS The correlations between the 2 scores were mostly moderate to strong at baseline (up to r = 0.791), and weak to moderate for the changes to follow-up (up to r = 0.408). The ratios SF-36 PF to 6MWD were 1.143-1.590 at baseline and 0.930-3.310 for the changes, and depended on pain and mental health. CONCLUSION Moderate to strong cross-sectional and moderate to weak longitudinal correlations were found between the 6MWD and the SF-36 PF. Pain and mental health should be considered when interpreting physical function. For a comprehensive assessment in clinical practice and research, the combination of self-rated and tested physical function measures is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is frequently used for the assessment of walking distances in several conditions, as knee osteoarthritis, but it can be both time-consuming for the researcher or clinician, and exhausting of painful for the subject suffering from this condition. The objective of our study was to analyze the concurrent validity of the 2-Minute Walk Test (2MWT) for patients with knee osteoarthritis compared to the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). METHODS Cross-sectional validation study. Scores from the 6MWT of 42 ambulatory patients affected by knee osteoarthritis were compared to those from the shorter 2MWT. An initial correlation test was used to assess correlation between both measures, and a subsequent univariate regression analysis was performed with the aim of comparing the estimated outcomes of the 6MWT versus the actual 6MWT. RESULTS The scores from the 2MWT and 6MWT showed excellent correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient r = 0.976; p-value < 0.001); the predictive equation based on the scores from the 2MWT (R2 = 0.952, p-value < 0.001) estimates the 6MWT scores with a relative error of 3.23%. CONCLUSIONS The 2MWT may be a practical assessment tool in replacement for the 6MWT in clinical assessment due to its low burden on patients and as a means of improving efficiency in a timely manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition affecting the entire joint and surrounding tissue, resulting in pain, stiffness and impaired movement. Recent studies have suggested the use of physical performance tests, such as the six-minute walk test (6MWT) to assess joint function for those with knee OA. This study assessed lower limb sagittal plane joint angles during a 6MWT for people with mild-moderate knee OA. METHODS Thirty-one participants (18 male, 13 female; 62.9 ± 8.4 years) with knee OA were recruited. Gait data were collected in a single session during which participants completed a 6MWT around a 20 m course. Sagittal plane joint angles for the hip, knee and ankle were calculated during the first and last minute of the 6MWT. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) was used to investigate changes in kinematic traces over the gait cycle. RESULTS Mean joint angles for the hip and knee showed no significant differences between the first and last minute of the 6MWT. Ankle joint kinematic traces indicated there to be a decrease in plantarflexion approaching toe-off in the last minute of the test - a 1.5° reduction from the first minute. No significant differences were calculated for walking speed or joint range of motion. DISCUSSION The lack of significant change in joint kinematic parameters and walking speed suggests the relative fatigue and pain burden to the participant over the duration of the 6-minute period is insufficient to elicit any mechanical changes to walking gait.

Abstract
Evaluating outcome in osteoarthritis (OA) clinical research and practice requires reliable, valid and responsive patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and functional tests that reflect important problems experienced by people with OA. The goal of this work is to provide information to start to guide the reader in selecting measures for people with OA. In this narrative review, we begin by providing an overview of measurement properties that can help clinicians and researchers in making decisions about whether a measure might be appropriate for use in their research or clinical context. We then report evidence supporting the use of measures of pain (e.g., Pain Visual Analogue (VAS), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain, PROMIS Pain Interference, and, for screening in research, the painDETECT and the Self-report Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs) and fatigue (e.g., PROMIS-Fatigue) at a group level in clinical research. Several multi-dimensional joint-specific measures (e.g., Western Ontario McMaster Universities' Osteoarthritis Outcomes Scale, Knee/Hip Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Oxford Hip/Knee Scale) also have evidence for group-level use. Functional tests (e.g., timed walk tests, 30 Second Chair Stand, Timed Up and Go, etc.) have measurement properties supporting their use at the group level in clinical research and at the individual patient level as do the pain VAS and NPRS. Other generic and disease-specific PROMs have been used in or could be used in OA studies but their measurement properties require further evaluation in people with OA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES No studies examined the lower extremity-related anaerobic exercise capacity or functional status in adult patients with FMF. METHODS Twenty-four patients with FMF (12 males) and 24 age-sex-matched healthy controls (13 males) were included in the study. Lower extremity-related anaerobic exercise capacity was assessed by using Wingate Anaerobic Test. Lower extremity-related functional status was examined by using 9-Step Stair Climb Test, 10-Repetition Chair Stand Test, and Six-Minute Walking Distance. Muscle strength of hip flexors, hip extensors, knee flexors, and knee extensors were evaluated by using a hand-held dynamometer. RESULTS Patients with FMF had significantly poorer results in all anaerobic exercise capacity parameters and functional status assessments (P < 0.05), except muscle strength measurements (P > 0.05). Both average and peak anaerobic exercise capacities correlated significantly with all muscle strength measurements, 9-Step Stair Climb Test, 10-Repetition Chair Stand Test times, and Six-Minute Walk Distances (P < 0.05) in patients with FMF. CONCLUSION Lower extremity-related anaerobic exercise capacity and functional status seem to be diminished in adult patients with FMF. Evaluating these parameters may be beneficial for planning more appropriate and individualized treatment regimens such as patient education and exercise counselling for patients with FMF.
