Abstract
Sustainable chemical production demands the creation of innovative catalysts and catalytic technologies. While the development of coherent and robust catalytic systems using earth-abundant transition metals is essential, it remains a significant challenge. Herein, an expedient divergence strategy for tandem dehydrogenative C(sp3)-H alkylation and cyclization reactions of 9H-fluorene using a newly developed N,N-bidentate cobalt catalytic system is developed. This method capitalizes on the use of abundant and readily accessible alcohol. Demonstrating wide-ranging applicability, the catalytic protocol successfully integrated a diverse array of fluorenes and alcohols. This includes benzylic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic primary and secondary alcohols, amassing a total of 75 distinct examples. When applied to sterically bulky alcohols, the reaction preferentially undergoes alkenylation, yielding a tetrasubstituted olefin as the main product. In the case of diols, the expected outcome is Dual-fluorescence at both terminal positions. This process leads to difluorination, followed by a cyclization step, culminating in the formation of a relatively unprecedented spiro compound. The scalability of this method has been validated through gram-scale synthesis. Control experiments have shed light on the reaction mechanism, indicating that it progresses through an unsaturated intermediate and adheres to the borrowing hydrogen pathway.

Abstract
The newly synthesized chiral active [5]helicene-like tetrabenzofluorene (TBF) based highly red-emitting molecules exhibit flower-like self-assembly. These molecules display photophysical and structural properties such as intramolecular charge transfer, dual state emission, large fluorescence quantum yield, and solvatochromism. In TBFID, the indandione functional group attached on both sides as the terminal group offers an A-D-A push-pull effect and acts as a strong acceptor to cause more redshift in solution as well as in solid state as compared to TBFPA (TBF with benzaldehyde functional group in terminal position). The self-assembly studies of TBFID demonstrate the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) attributed to the restriction of intramolecular rotation at the aggregated state. Furthermore, TBFID shows high quantum yield and intense red emission, making the molecule fit for organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and bioimaging applications.

Abstract
The usage of earth-abundant, nontoxic transition metals in place of rare noble metals is a central goal in catalysis. This would be especially interesting when the reactivity and selectivity patterns can be tuned. Herein, we introduced the first Mn-catalyzed selective C-alkylation and olefination of fluorene, and indene with alcohols. Various substrates including benzylic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic primary and secondary alcohols are employed as alkylating agents. Mechanistic investigations and a kinetic study underpin the involvement of the olefinated intermediate to furnish the alkylated product.

Abstract
Endeavors have been made to construct new donor-acceptor (D-A) monomers utilizing 9 H-carbazole (CB) as electron donors and different electron acceptors. All estimations were finished using DFT and TD-DFT, and B3LYP level with a 6-311 G basis set in the gas and chloroform solvent. The impacts of the distinctive acceptors on the geometry of molecules and optoelectronic properties of these D-A monomers were discussed to dissect the connection connecting the molecular structures and the optoelectronic properties. Likewise, the HOMO - LUMO energies, atomic orbital densities are calculated theoretically. Notwithstanding the charge transfer measure between the carbazole electron donor unit and the electron acceptor one is upheld by breaking down the optical spectra of the acquired monomers and the restriction of involved HOMO and LUMO. The outcomes show that the D-A monomers, CB-ODP, CB-TDP, and CB-SDP, are acceptable for optoelectronic applications in organic solar cells like BHJ.

Abstract
An N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed synthesis of dibenzofulvenes and fluorenyl alcohols was developed. In the presence of 10 mol% NHC (1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) and 4 Å molecular sieves, 9-(trimethylsilyl)fluorene undergoes an olefination reaction with aldehydes to produce dibenzofulvenes in 43-99% yields. However, on reducing the NHC loading to 1 mol% and with the addition of water, 9-(trimethylsilyl)fluorene selectively undergoes nucleophilic addition with aldehydes to afford fluorenyl alcohols in 40-95% yields.

Abstract
Polycarbazole and its derivatives have been extensively used for the last three decades, although the interest in these materials briefly decreased. However, the increasing demand for conductive polymers for several applications such as light emitting diodes (OLEDs), capacitators or memory devices, among others, has renewed the interest in carbazole-based materials. In this review, the synthetic routes used for the development of carbazole-based polymers have been summarized, reviewing the main synthetic methodologies, namely chemical and electrochemical polymerization. In addition, the applications reported in the last decade for carbazole derivatives are analysed. The emergence of flexible and wearable electronic devices as a part of the internet of the things could be an important driving force to renew the interest on carbazole-based materials, being conductive polymers capable to respond adequately to requirement of these devices.

Abstract
In catalytic asymmetric reactions, the formation of chiral molecules generally relies on a direct chirality transfer (point or axial chirality) from a chiral catalyst to products in the stereo-determining step. Herein, we disclose a transient-axial-chirality transfer strategy to achieve asymmetric reaction. This method relies on transferring point chirality from the catalyst to a dirhodium carbene intermediate with axial chirality, namely a transient-axial-chirality since this species is an intermediate of the reaction. The transient chirality is then transferred to the final product by C(sp2)-H functionalization reaction with exceptionally high enantioselectivity. We also generalize this strategy for the asymmetric cascade reaction involving dual carbene/alkyne metathesis (CAM), a transition-metal-catalyzed method to access chiral 9-aryl fluorene frameworks in high yields with up to 99% ee. Detailed DFT calculations shed light on the mode of the transient-axial-chirality transfer and the detailed mechanism of the CAM reaction.

Abstract
In this work, polymers of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-triphenylamine] with side chains containing: pyrene (C1), diphenyl (C2), naphthalene (C3), and isopropyl (C6) structures were synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction. The structures were verified using NMR and cyclic voltammetry measurements provide the HOMO and LUMO of the polymers. The polymer with pyrene (C1) and naphthalene (C3) produced photoluminescence in the green while the polymer with the side chain containing diphenyl (C2) and isopropyl (C6) produce dual emission peaks of blue-green photoluminescence (PL). In order to examine the electroluminescence properties of the polymers, the solutions were spin-coated onto patterned ITO anode, dried, and subsequently coated with an Al cathode layer to form pristine single layer polymer LEDs. The results are compared to a standard PFO sample. The electroluminescence spectra resemble the PL spectra for C1 and C3. The devices of C2, C3, and C6 exhibit voltage-dependent EL. An additional red emission peak was detected for C2 and C6, resulting in spectra with peaks at 435 nm, 490 nm, and 625 nm. The effects of the side chains on the spectral characteristics of the polymer are discussed.

Abstract
The modulation of conjugated polyelectrolyte fluorescence response by nonionic surfactants is dependent on the structures of the surfactant and polymer, polymer average molecular weight, and polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions. In this paper, we study the effect of nonionic n-alkyl polyoxyethylene surfactants (CiEj) with different alkyl chain lengths (CiE5 with i = 6, 8, 10, and 12) and number of oxyethylene groups (C12Ej with j = 5, 7, and 9) on the photophysics and ionic conductivity of poly{[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)-hexyl]-2,7-fluorene-alt-1,4-phenylene}bromide (HTMA-PFP) in dimethyl sulfoxide-water 4% (v/v). Molecular dynamics simulations show that HTMA-PFP chains tend to approach as the simulation evolves. However, the minimum distance between the polymer centers of mass increases upon addition of the surfactant and grows with both the surfactant alkyl chain length and the number of oxyethylene groups, although there are no specific polymer-surfactant interactions. A significant increase in the polymer emission intensity has been observed at surfactant concentrations around their critical micelle concentrations (cmcs), which is attributed to polymer aggregate disruption. However, an increase in the solution conductivity for concentrations above the C12E5 cmc has only been observed for the HTMA-PFP/C12E5 system. The enhancement of fluorescence emission intensity and conductivity upon surfactant addition increases with polymer average molecular weights and seems to be controlled by the polymer-surfactant proximity, which is maximum for C10E5 and C12E5.

Abstract
Organic semiconductors have great potential as flexible thermoelectric materials. A fluorene-based covalent organic framework (FL-COF-1) was designed with the aim of creating an enhanced π-π interaction among the crystalline backbones. By the introduction of fluorene units into the frameworks, the FL-COF-1 had high thermal stability with a BET surface area over 1300 m2 g-1. The open frameworks were favorable for doping with iodine and followed with the improved charge carrier mobility. The compressed pellet of I2@FL-COF-1 exhibited a high Seebeck coefficient of 2450 μV K-1 and power factor of 0.063 μW m-1 K-2 at room temperature, giving the first example of COFs' potential application as thermoelectric materials.

Abstract
π-Expanded butterfly-like 2D fluorenes and 3D spirobifluorenes 1-5 were synthesized via a DDQ-mediated oxidative cyclization strategy with a high regioselectivity. Through structural modification via π-expansion, it was possible to achieve near-ultraviolet absorption, bright-blue emission, very high near-unity fluorescence quantum yields in solution as well as in film states, and deep-lying HOMO energy levels with excellent thermal stabilities. Furthermore, these electron-rich compounds displayed a notable behavior towards sensing of nitroaromatic explosives, such as picric acid, up to a detection limit of 0.2 ppb.

Abstract
Xenogenic bone substitutes are commonly used during orthopedic reconstructive procedures to assist bone regeneration. However, huge amounts of blood accompanied with massive bone loss usually increase the difficulty of placing the xenograft into the bony defect. Additionally, the lack of an organic matrix leads to a decrease in the mechanical strength of the bone-grafted site. For effective bone grafting, this study aims at developing a mussel adhesion-employed bone graft binder with great blood-resistance and enhanced mechanical properties. The distinguishing water (or blood) resistance of the binder originates from sandcastle worm-inspired complex coacervation using negatively charged hyaluronic acid (HA) and a positively charged recombinant mussel adhesive protein (rMAP) containing tyrosine residues. The rMAP/HA coacervate stabilizes the agglomerated bone graft in the presence of blood. Moreover, the rMAP/HA composite binder enhances the mechanical and hemostatic properties of the bone graft agglomerate. These outstanding features improve the osteoconductivity of the agglomerate and subsequently promote in vivo bone regeneration. Thus, the blood-resistant coacervated mussel protein glue is a promising binding material for effective bone grafting and can be successfully expanded to general bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Pyrene-based π-conjugated materials are considered to be an ideal organic electro-luminescence material for application in semiconductor devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and so forth. However, the great drawback of employing pyrene as an organic luminescence material is the formation of excimer emission, which quenches the efficiency at high concentration or in the solid-state. Thus, in order to obtain highly efficient optical devices, scientists have devoted much effort to tuning the structure of pyrene derivatives in order to realize exploitable properties by employing two strategies, 1) introducing a variety of moieties at the pyrene core, and 2) exploring effective and convenient synthetic strategies to functionalize the pyrene core. Over the past decades, our group has mainly focused on synthetic methodologies for functionalization of the pyrene core; we have found that formylation/acetylation or bromination of pyrene can selectly lead to functionalization at K-region by Lewis acid catalysis. Herein, this Minireview highlights the direct synthetic approaches (such as formylation, bromination, oxidation, and de-tert-butylation reactions, etc.) to functionalize the pyrene in order to advance research on luminescent materials for organic electronic applications. Further, this article demonstrates that the future direction of pyrene chemistry is asymmetric functionalization of pyrene for organic semiconductor applications and highlights some of the classical asymmetric pyrenes, as well as the latest breakthroughs. In addition, the photophysical properties of pyrene-based molecules are briefly reviewed. To give a current overview of the development of pyrene chemistry, the review selectively covers some of the latest reports and concepts from the period covering late 2011 to the present day.

Abstract
The ever increasing demand for clean energy has encouraged researchers to intensively investigate environmentally friendly photovoltaic devices. Inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are very promising due to their potentials of easy fabrication processes and high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Designing hole-transporting materials (HTMs) is one of the key factors in achieving the high PCEs of PSCs. We now report the synthesis of two types of carbazole-based polymers, namely 3,6-Cbz-EDOT and 2,7-Cbz-EDOT, by Stille polycondensation. Despite the same chemical composition, 3,6-Cbz-EDOT and 2,7-Cbz-EDOT displayed different optical and electrochemical properties due to the different connectivity mode of the carbazole unit. Therefore, their performances as hole-transporting polymeric materials in the PSCs were also different. The device based on 2,7-Cbz-EDOT showed better photovoltaic properties with the PCE of 4.47% than that based on 3,6-Cbz-EDOT. This could be due to its more suitable highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level and higher hole mobility.

Light Emission Properties of a Cross-Conjugated Fluorene Polymer: Demonstration of Its Use in Electro-Luminescence and Lasing Devices. Polymers (Basel) 2016; 8:polym8020043. Abstract
Light emission properties of a fluorene cross-conjugated polymer (PF–1) based on the monomer 4,7-bis[2-(9,9-dimethyl)fluorenyl] benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole are reported. This polymer exhibits solubility at high concentrations, good processability into thin solid films of good quality and a broad emission band with a fluorescence quantum yield of approximately 1. Based on these features, in this paper we implemented the use of PF–1 as an active layer in polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) and as a laser gain medium in solution. To get insight on the conducting properties of PF–1, two different electron injectors, poly [(9,9-bis(3′-(N,N-dimethylamino) propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9–dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) and lithium fluoride (LiF), were used in a simple PLED architecture. PLEDs with the PFN film were found to exhibit better performance with a maximum luminous efficiency of 40 cd/A, a turn-on voltage (Von) of approximately 4.5 V and a luminance maximum of 878 cd/m2 at 5.5 V, with a current density of 20 A/m2. For the lasing properties of PF–1, we found a lasing threshold of around 75 μJ and a tunability of 20 nm. These values are comparable with those of rhodamine 6G, a well-known laser dye.
