Molecular Electronics: Creating and Bridging Molecular Junctions and Promoting Its Commercialization

Molecular electronics is driven by the dream of expanding Moore's law to the molecular level for next-generation electronics through incorporating individual or ensemble molecules into electronic circuits. For nearly 50 years, numerous efforts have been made to explore the intrinsic properties of molecules and develop diverse fascinating molecular electronic devices with the desired functionalities. The flourishing of molecular electronics is inseparable from the development of various elegant methodologies for creating nanogap electrodes and bridging the nanogap with molecules. This review first focuses on the techniques for making lateral and vertical nanogap electrodes by breaking, narrowing, and fixed modes, and highlights their capabilities, applications, merits, and shortcomings. After summarizing the approaches of growing single molecules or molecular layers on the electrodes, the methods of constructing a complete molecular circuit are comprehensively grouped into three categories: 1) directly bridging one-molecule-electrode component with another electrode, 2) physically bridging two-molecule-electrode components, and 3) chemically bridging two-molecule-electrode components. Finally, the current state of molecular circuit integration and commercialization is discussed and perspectives are provided, hoping to encourage the community to accelerate the realization of fully scalable molecular electronics for a new era of integrated microsystems and applications.

Electrostatic Assembly of Porphyrin-Functionalized Porous Membrane toward Biomimetic Photocatalytic Degradation Dyes

Porphyrin-based catalytic oxidation is one of the most representative biomimetic catalysis. To mimic the biomimetic catalytic oxidation of nature, a positive charged porous membrane, quaternized polysulfone (QPSf) membrane with spongelike structure, was prepared for supporting meso-tetraphenylsulfonato porphyrin (TPPS). The influence of polymer concentration, coagulation bath, and additives on the structure of the substrate membrane was explored, and the optimized membrane with porosity of 87.1% and water flux of 371 L·m^-2·h^-1 at 0.1 MPa was obtained. Monolayer TPPS was adsorbed on the QPSf membrane surface by the electrostatic self-assembly approach, and the adsorption process followed the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation. The resulting TPPS@QPSf membrane showed excellent visible light response, and the photocatalytic performance for dyes was then enhanced dramatically after TPPS was immobilized on the membrane. The removal efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) were 92.1, 94.1, and 92.1% under visible light irradiation, respectively. The primary photocatalytic degradation of the dye was a zero-order reaction, and the secondary reaction of degradation followed pseudo first-order kinetics. Finally, the TPPS@QPSf membrane can be reused for photocatalytic degradation of RhB for 10 cycles with no obvious change on removal efficiency, which indicated that this membrane is a promising material for dyeing water treatment coupled with visible light irradiation.

Controlling Surface Charge Generated by Contact Electrification: Strategies and Applications

Contact electrification is the phenomenon in which charge is generated on the surfaces of materials after they come into contact. The surface charge generated has traditionally been known to cause a vast range of undesirable consequences in our lives and in industry; on the other hand, it can also give rise to many types of useful applications. In addition, there has been a lot of interest in recent years for fabricating devices and materials based on regulating a desired amount of surface charge. It is thus important to understand the general strategies for increasing, decreasing, or controlling the surface charge generated by contact electrification. Herein, the fundamental mechanisms for influencing the amount of charge generated, the methods used for implementing these mechanisms, and some of the recent interesting applications that require regulating the amount of surface charge generated by contact electrification, are briefly summarized.

The Fabrication of Micro-Array Channels with the Ultrafine-Grained LZ91 Mg-Li Alloy by Micro-Embossing

The fabrication of the micro-channel array through micro-embossing on an ultrafine-grained (UFG) LZ91 Mg-Li alloy was investigated in this paper. Micro-embossing tests indicated that the depth of the channels increase with increasing temperatures. Micro-array channels with widths ranging from 50 μm to 200 μm were performed with an applied force of 2 kN at 423 K, following by a dwell time of 60 s on the UFG LZ91 Mg-Li alloy. The surface topography indicates that embossed micro-channels for UFG LZ91 Mg-Li with all widths are clearly printed well with good geometrical transferability and no obvious defects. The comparison filling behavior of UFG and the CG LZ91 Mg-Li alloy reveals that grain sizes mainly affect the filling quality of micro-embossing. The results indicate a potential application of the UFG Mg-Li alloy in the mass fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) components.

Constructing a Multiplexed DNA Pattern by Combining Precise Magnetic Manipulation and DNA-Driven Assembly

There is an urgent demand to construct multiplexed biomolecular patterns to obtain more biological information from a single experiment. However, with only limited reports focusing on defective top-down approaches, challenges remain to develop a bottom-up strategy for multiplexed patterning. To this end, a novel strategy has been proposed to fabricate multiplexed DNA patterns via macroscopic assembly through combined precise magnetic manipulation and DNA hybridization-driven self-assembly. Therefore, a multiplexed DNA pattern composed of glass fibers loaded with multiple specific strands of DNA was constructed, and its potential application in simultaneous detection of multiplex target DNA was demonstrated. Moreover, the fabricated multiplexed DNA pattern shows an erasable behavior because the hybridized DNA can be disassembled by strand displacement.

Stimuli-Responsive Layer-by-Layer Tellurium-Containing Polymer Films for the Combination of Chemotherapy and Photodynamic Therapy

Tellurium-containing photoresponsive polyelectrolyte multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly of a tellurium-containing polymer, photosensitizer, and poly(styrenesulfonate). The resulting films were investigated by UV/vis spectroscopy, XPS, EPR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under visible light, the photosensitizer in the film is excited and transforms triplet oxygen into singlet oxygen in aqueous solution. Singlet oxygen oxidizes -Te- to high valence state (Te═O) on the polymer backbone. The generated (Te═O) group makes the micelles more hydrophilic and looser, thereby facilitating the controlled release of the loaded cargo of micelles. These results show that the film has the potential to be used for cargo loading and controlled release, thus may provide a new way to combine photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy.

Parallel near-field photolithography with metal-coated elastomeric masks

Developing a cost-effective nanolithography strategy that enables the production of subwavelength features with various shapes over large areas is a long-standing goal in the nanotechnology community. Herein, an inexpensive nanolithographic technique that combines the wafer-scale production capability of photolithography with the subwavelength feature size controllability of near-field photolithography was developed to fabricate centimeter-scale up to wafer-scale sub-100-nm variously shaped nanopatterns on surfaces. The wafer-scale elastomeric trench-based photomasks with subwavelength apertures created at the apexes were compatible with mask aligners, allowing for the production of wafer-scale subwavelength nanopatterns with adjustable feature sizes, shapes, and periodicities. The smallest feature sizes of 50 and 80 nm were achieved on positive tone and negative tone photoresist surfaces, respectively, which could be ascribed to a near-field optical effect. The fabricated centimeter-scale nanopatterns were functionalized to study cell-matrix adhesion and migration. Compared to currently developed nanolithographic methods that approach similar functionalities, this facile nanolithographic strategy combines the merits of low cost, subwavelength feature size, high throughput, and varied feature shapes, making it an affordable approach to be used in academic research for researchers at most institutions.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Visible-light-induced disruption of diselenide-containing layer-by-layer films: toward combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy

A photoresponsive polyelectrolyte multilayer film containing a diselenide functional group is fabricated using an unconventional layer-by-layer method. The polycation backbone is constructed through copolymerization of di-(1-hydroxylundecyl) diselenide and 1,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine with 2,4-diisocyanatotoluene. A common polyanion poly(styrene sulfonate) is selected as the polyanion. The obtained film can be gradually disrupted under the irradiation of mild visible light, and this process can be monitored with UV-vis spectroscopy. The residue of the film is estimated to be 17% after 5 h of irradiation. The intensity of the visible light can be as low as 50 mW cm⁻², which is even weaker than the sunlight. The cytotoxicity of the building blocks is evaluated in MTT assays using human hepatic cell line (L-02), and the results are satisfactory. Further tests show that cells can grow in a regular manner on this film, indicating good biocompatibility. In addition, the film can be used to achieve cargo loading and controlled release. Considering that light can not only trigger controlled release but also act as part of the therapy itself (photodynamic therapy), this system shows hope for further development into a platform for the combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy, especially for applications concerning skin.

A facile method to prepare molecularly imprinted layer-by-layer nanostructured multilayers using postinfiltration and a subsequent photo-cross-linking strategy

In this paper, we have demonstrated a facile strategy to prepare molecularly imprinted layer-by-layer nanostructured films. This strategy has circumvented the requirement of using photocross-linkable polymers, which suffered from tedious synthetic processes in the construction of surface molecular imprinting in layer-by-layer (SMI-LbL) devices. The described SMI-LbL device was constructed by employing the traditional construction procedures of LbL systems, followed by the postinfiltration of bifunctional photosensitive cross-linking agent 4,4'-diazostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid disodium salt into the prepared multilayers, and subsequent photocross-linking. A robust SMI-LbL device with high fatigue-resistance was achieved. The preparation conditions have been optimized to achieve repeated unloading and rebinding of the targeting molecule with high fidelity. The combination of templating and cross-linking is the core factor to achieve high fidelity and high efficiency of the SMI-LbL device.

Tuning the architecture of cellulose nanocrystal-poly(allylamine hydrochloride) multilayered thin films: influence of dipping parameters

Multilayered thin films consisting of alternating cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), and anionic cellulose nanocrystals (CNs) were constructed using the dipping procedure by screening different experimental parameters: the drying step between each layer adsorption, the dipping time, the ionic strength of the PAH solution, and the concentration of CNs dispersion. We showed that the drying process and the ionic strength of PAH solution were crucial parameters for the successful construction of 8-bilayer films. Film thickness is mainly influenced by dipping time and CN concentration when using the dipping procedure without drying. Two architectures of adsorbed CN layers-a single or a double layer of CNs-were revealed on the basis of the thickness increment per bilayer, depending on experimental conditions. The layer adsorption process was investigated in real-time using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) experiments in an aqueous environment or by incorporating a drying step. On the basis of in situ construction of PAH-CN films in wet media, QCM-D data were indicative of highly hydrated films for which the progressive layer stacking is disturbed or prevented. QCM-D monitoring of CNs and PAH layer adsorption was monitored by incorporating a drying process. The impact of experimental parameters on PAH-CN multilayered construction and on CN layer configuration is discussed. This study offers new opportunities for tailoring the architecture of CN-based multilayer films.

Fabrication of ultra-fine nanostructures using edge transfer printing

The exploration of new methods and techniques for application in diverse fields, such as photonics, microfluidics, biotechnology and flexible electronics is of increasing scientific and technical interest for multiple uses over distance of 10-100 nm. This article discusses edge transfer printing--a series of unconventional methods derived from soft lithography for nanofabrication. It possesses the advantages of easy fabrication, low-cost and great serviceability. In this paper, we show how to produce exposed edges and use various materials for edge transfer printing, while nanoskiving, nanotransfer edge printing and tunable cracking for nanogaps are introduced. Besides this, different functional materials, such as metals, inorganic semiconductors and polymers, as well as localised heating and charge patterning, are described here as unconventional "inks" for printing. Edge transfer printing, which can effectively produce sub-100 nm scale ultra-fine structures, has broad applications, including metallic nanowires as nanoelectrodes, semiconductor nanowires for chemical sensors, heterostructures of organic semiconductors, plasmonic devices and so forth.

Unconventional layer-by-layer assembly: surface molecular imprinting and its applications

Layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) is a rich, versatile, and powerful technique for fabricating multilayer thin films with controlled architecture and functions. Singly charged, uncharged, or water-repellent molecules cannot be used directly in conventional LbL assembly. This problem can be solved with unconventional LbL methods, by employing the preassembly of building blocks in solution and the use of these assemblies for LbL formation at the interface. This Concept summarizes different methods of unconventional LbL assembly, including electrostatic complex formation, hydrogen-bonded complexes, block-copolymer micelles, and π-π interaction complexes. These preassembly treatments endow the building blocks with enhanced abilities for advanced functionality, in particular, surface molecular imprinting, a new concept emerging from unconventional LbL. Molecular imprinting approaches are thus conceptually described based on different types of interactions and their great potential in applications is demonstrated by examples such as selective surface patterning and selective filtration.

Surface molecular imprinted layer-by-layer film attached to a porous membrane for selective filtration

A surface molecular imprinted layer-by-layer (SMILbL) film was fabricated on a polyethersulfone (PES) porous membrane substrate for selective filtration of cations and anions. The LbL deposition procedure and the ultraviolet (UV) cross-linking of the modified membrane were monitored by attenuated total reflection-infrared (ATR-IR) spectra. The SMILbL-PES membrane with 4.5 bilayers of diazoresin (DAR)/poly(acrylic acid) complexed with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-(trimethylammonio)-phenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin tetratosylate (PAA-Por(4+)) effectively reduced the permeation velocity of Por(4+) after washing the Por(4+) template out. In comparison to a control film DAR/PAA-modified PES membrane (ConLbL-PES) in a dialysis experiment, the SMILbL-PES membrane exhibited better selectivity for permeation of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine-p,p',p″,p‴-tetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium hydrate (Por(4-)) against permeation of Por(4+). In pressure-driven transport experiments, the SMILbL-PES membrane showed a much longer blocking time for Por(4+) than for Por(4-), indicating the selective loading of Por(4+) into the SMILbL film. The surface charge of the SMILbL-PES membrane after Por(4+) loading was higher than that of other membranes, resulting in an enhanced rejection ability of the SMILbL-PES membrane to Por(4+) caused by Coulomb repulsion. A possible mechanism was proposed as follows. The binding sites generated through imprinting in the SMILbL-PES membrane enable loading of a larger amount of Por(4+). The stronger repulsion between Por(4+) and the SMILbL film may cause the main contribution to the selective rejection of Por(4+). It can be easily imagined that this concept can be extended to the construction of composite membranes from other imprinting systems.

Improving protein transfer efficiency and selectivity in affinity contact printing by using UV-modified surfaces

Affinity contact printing (αCP) is a technique that allows the selective capture of a target protein from solutions to a polymeric stamp decorated with an antibody, and then the target protein is printed onto a solid surface. The success of αCP critically relies on the precise control of protein-surface interactions. Here, we report a study on the effect of UV on the protein-surface interactions between protein and polydimethylsiloxane stamps and between protein and glass slides decorated with N,N-dimethyl-n-octadecyl-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilyl chloride (DMOAP). Our results show that UV-modified surfaces can be used to improve the transfer efficiency and selectivity of proteins during αCP. For example, the protein transfer efficiency of human IgG onto a DMOAP-coated slide increases from 7.2% to 45.1% after the UV treatment. On the basis of these results, UV-modified surfaces were employed to develop a αCP system for protein detection. The detection limit of anti-IgG in this system is around 10 ng/mL, and the dynamic range is 4 orders of magnitude.

Thermotropic organization of hydrogen-bond-bridged bolaform amphiphiles

A series of quaternary ammonium amphiphiles (A-n) bearing carboxylic acid groups were designed and synthesized. The branched bolaform structures can be constructed by dimerizations of carboxylic acid groups through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, as demonstrated by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and the temperature-dependent FT-IR spectra. The thermotropic organizations of branched bolaform ammonium dimer complexes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. We investigated the influence of the spacer between the cationic group and the benzene ring on the thermotropic organization. A-6 with short lateral alkyl chains formed a simple layered structure at room temperature and exhibited smectic A mesophase above 145 °C, whereas A-8 with intermediate lateral chain length organized into smectic A phase over a wide temperature range. A further increase of the length (n = 10, 12) of the lateral chains resulted in the formation of lamellar structure with in-plane layered periodicity, which is rare in the organization of ionic compounds. A packing model of the quasi-2D lamellar was proposed on the basis of the experimental data of X-ray diffraction results. Notably, the quasi-2D lamellar structure could evolve into a simple layer with the increase of temperature. The present results showed a direct relationship in which the branched architecture can be applied to tune the self-assembly behavior of ionic amphiphiles and is allowed to construct new layered superstructure.
