Abstract
Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Abstract
The ability of electronic devices to act as switches makes digital information processing possible. Succeeding graphene, emerging inorganic 2D materials (i2DMs) have been identified as alternative 2D materials to harbor a variety of active molecular components to move the current silicon-based semiconductor technology forward to a post-Moore era focused on molecule-based information processing components. In this regard, i2DMs benefits are not only for their prominent physiochemical properties (e.g., the existence of bandgap), but also for their high surface-to-volume ratio rich in reactive sites. Nonetheless, since this field is still in an early stage, having knowledge of both i) the different strategies for molecularly functionalizing the current library of i2DMs, and ii) the different types of active molecular components is a sine qua non condition for a rational design of stimuli-responsive i2DMs capable of performing logical operations at the molecular level. Consequently, this Review provides a comprehensive tutorial for covalently anchoring ad hoc molecular components-as active units triggered by different external inputs-onto pivotal i2DMs to assess their role in the expanding field of molecule-programmable nanoelectronics for electrically monitoring bistable molecular switches. Limitations, challenges, and future perspectives of this emerging field which crosses materials chemistry with computation are critically discussed.

Abstract
In search of new multifunctional hybrid materials and in order to investigate the influence of chemical modification on the possible synergy between properties, the carboxylate and sulfonate derivatives of photo- and thermochromic N-salicylidene aniline were successfully inserted into Co(II)- and Zn(II)-based layered simple hydroxides, resulting in four novel hybrids: Co-N-Sali-COO, Co-N-Sali-SO3, Zn-N-Sali-COO, and Zn-N-Sali-SO3. All synthesized hybrids adopt a double organic layered configuration, which prevents the cis-trans photoisomerization ability of N-Sali-R molecules in the hybrids. However, the Zn hybrids exhibit fluorescence upon exposure to UV light due to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The thermally stimulated keto-enol tautomerization of N-salicylidene aniline in the hybrids was related with the changes in interlamellar spacings observed by temperature-dependent PXRD. This tautomerization process was prominently evident in the Co-N-Sali-SO3 hybrid (about 11% increase in d-spacing upon decreasing the temperature to -180 °C). Finally, the Co-N-Sali-R hybrids exhibit the typical magnetic behavior associated with Co(II)-based LSHs (ferrimagnetic ordering at TN = 6.8 and 7.7 K for Co-N-Sali-COO and Co-N-Sali-SO3, respectively). This work offers insights into isomerization in LSHs and the ESIPT mechanism's potential in new luminescent materials and prospects for designing new multifunctional materials.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in stimuli-responsive host-guest materials due to the high potential for their application in switchable devices. Light is the most convenient stimulus for operating these materials; a light-responsive guest affects the host structure and the functional characteristics of the entire material. UV-transparent layered rare earth hydroxides intercalated with UV-switchable anions are promising candidates as stimuli-responsive host-guest materials. The interlayer distance in the layered rare earth hydroxides depends on the size of the intercalated anions, which could be changed in situ, e.g., via anion isomerisation. Nevertheless, for layered rare earth hydroxides, the possibility of such changes has not been reported yet. A good candidate anion that is capable of intercalating into the interlayer space is the cinnamate anion, which undergoes UV-assisted irreversible trans-cis isomerisation. In this work, both trans- and cis-cinnamate anions were intercalated in layered yttrium hydroxide (LYH). Upon UV-irradiation, the interlayer distance of trans-cinnamate-intercalated layered yttrium hydroxide suspended in isopropanol changed from 21.9 to 20.6 Å. For the first time, the results obtained demonstrate the possibility of using layered rare earth hydroxides as stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
Research on two-dimensional materials is one of the most relevant fields in materials science. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a versatile class of anionic clays, exhibit great potential in photocatalysis, energy storage and conversion, and environmental applications. However, its implementation in real-life devices requires the development of efficient and reproducible large-scale synthesis processes. Unfortunately, reliable methods that allow for the production of large quantities of two-dimensional LDHs with well-defined morphologies and high crystallinity are very scarce. In this work, we carry out a scale-up of the urea-based CoAl-LDH synthesis method. We thoroughly study the effects of the mass scale-up (25-fold: up to 375 mM) and the volumetric scale-up (20-fold: up to 2 L). For this, we use a combination of several structural (XRD, TGA, and N2 and CO2 isotherms), microscopic (SEM, TEM, and AFM), magnetic (SQUID), and spectroscopic techniques (ATR-FTIR, UV-vis, XPS, ICP-MS, and XANES-EXAFS). In the case of the volumetric scale-up, a reduction of 45% in the lateral dimensions of the crystals (from 3.7 to 2.0 µm) is observed as the reaction volume increases. This fact is related to modified heating processes affecting the alkalinization rates and, concomitantly, the precipitation, even under recrystallization at high temperatures. In contrast, for the tenfold mass scale-up, similar morphological features were observed and assigned to changes in nucleation and growth. However, at higher concentrations, simonkolleite-like Co-based layered hydroxide impurities are formed, indicating a phase competition during the precipitation related to the thermodynamic stability of the growing phases. Overall, this work demonstrates that it is possible to upscale the synthesis of high-quality hexagonal CoAl-LDH in a reproducible manner. It highlights the most critical synthesis aspects that must be controlled and provides various fingerprints to trace the quality of these materials. These results will contribute to bringing the use of these 2D layered materials closer to reality in different applications of interest.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of two-dimensional (2D) anionic materials that exhibit remarkable chemical versatility, making them ideal building blocks in the design of complex multifunctional materials. In this line, a NiFe-LDH is probably one of the most important LDHs due to its interesting electrochemical and magnetic properties. However, no direct magnetic measurements of exfoliated NiFe-LDH nanosheets have been reported so far. Herein, we synthesize a hybrid NiFe-LDH family through anion exchange reactions using surfactant molecules in order to increase the interlayer space (ranging from 8 to 31.6 Å), minimizing the interlayer dipolar interactions. By intercalation with octadecylsulphate, we have managed to obtain the largest interlayer space reported for a NiFe-LDH while keeping a similar size, morphology and composition. This wide interlayer separation results in a decrease in temperatures at which spontaneous magnetization (TM) occurs and the blocking temperature (TB), as well as a decrease in the coercive fields (HC). In fact, an abrupt drop in all these magnetic parameters above 30 Å interlayer distance is observed, evidencing complete magnetic decoupling of the layers. We have further validated our molecular engineering approach by characterizing the hybrid materials by Mössbauer spectroscopy and comparing the magnetic analysis results with those for a liquid phase exfoliated NiFe-LDH sample. Overall, this work provides fundamental insights into the magnetism of NiFe-LDHs, showing the potential of molecular engineering for designing hybrid layered magnetic materials approaching the 2D magnetic limit.

Abstract
A dramatic change in the magnetic behaviour, which solely depends on the parity of the organic linker molecules, has been found in a family of layered CoII hydroxides covalently functionalized with dicarboxylic molecules. These layered hybrid materials have been synthesized at room temperature using a one-pot procedure through the epoxide route. While hybrids connected by odd alkyl chains exhibit coercive fields (Hc ) below ca. 3500 Oe and show spontaneous magnetization at temperatures (TM ) below 20 K, hybrids functionalized with even alkyl chains behave as hard magnets with Hc >5500 Oe and display a TM higher than 55 K. This intriguing behaviour was studied by density functional theory with the incorporation of a Hubbard term (DFT+U) calculations, unveiling the structural subtleties underlying this observation. Indeed, the different molecular orientation exhibited by the even/odd alkyl chains, and the orientation of the covalently linked carboxylic groups modify the intensity of the magnetic coupling of both octahedral and tetrahedral in-plane sublattices, thus strongly affecting the magnetic properties of the hybrid. These findings offer an outstanding level of tuning in the molecular design of hybrid magnetic materials based on layered hydroxides.

Abstract
Three layered lanthanide hydroxides (LLHs), with the general formula Ln8(OH)20Cl4·nH2O (Ln = Tb (1), Ho (2), Er (3)), were prepared and magnetically characterized both as pure compounds and diluted within a yttrium diamagnetic matrix, LYH : xLn, LYH : 0.044Tb (1'), LYH : 0.045Ho (2'), and LYH : 0.065Er (3'). This study was complemented with theoretical calculations in order to understand the electronic configuration and the contributions to the slow relaxation behavior. In the pure compounds dominant 3D ferromagnetic interactions are observed, with a small magnetization hysteresis at 1.8 K for 1, while the magnetically diluted solid solutions display slow relaxation of magnetization at low temperatures.

Abstract
We report new types of reversibly photoresponsive ZnO:azobenzene superlattice thin films fabricated through atomic/molecular-layer deposition (ALD/MLD) from diethylzinc, water, and 4,4'-azobenzene dicarboxylic acid precursors. In these ultrathin films, crystalline ZnO layers are interspersed with monomolecular photoactive azobenzene dicarboxylate layers. The thickness of the individual ZnO layers is precisely controlled by the number (m) of ALD cycles applied between two subsequent MLD cycles for the azobenzene layers; in our {[(Zn-O) m +(Zn-O2-C-C6H4-N=N-C6H4-C-O2)] n +(Zn-O) m } samples, m ranges from 0 to 240. The photoresponsive behavior of the films is demonstrated with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy; all the films are found to be photoreactive upon 360 nm irradiation, the kinetics of the resultant trans-cis photoisomerization somewhat depending on the superlattice structure. The reversibility of the photoisomerization reaction is then confirmed with a subsequent thermal treatment. Our work thus provides proof-of-concept evidence of the suitability of the ALD/MLD technology for the implementation of photoactive moieties such as azobenzene within an inorganic matrix as an attractive new methodology for creating novel light-switchable functional materials.

Abstract
Direct water oxidation via photocatalysis is a four-electron and multiple-proton process which requires high extra energy input to produce free dioxygen gas, making it exacting, especially under visible light irradiation. To improve the oxygen evolution reaction rates (OERs) and utilize more visible light, flower-like cobalt hydroxide/oxide (Fw-Co(OH)2/Fw-Co3O4) photocatalysts were prepared and loaded onto graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) by a facile coating method in this work. Influenced by the unique three-dimensional morphologies, the synthesized Fw-Co(OH)2 or Fw-Co3O4/g-C3N4 hybrids reveal favorable combination and synergism reflected by the modified photoelectric activities and the improved OER performances. Attributed to its prominent hydrotalcite structure, Fw-Co(OH)2 shows better cocatalytic activity for g-C3N4 modification compared with that of Fw-Co3O4. Specifically, 7 wt % Fw-Co(OH)2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibits photocurrent density 4 times higher and OER performance 5 times better than pristine g-C3N4. This work unambiguously promotes the application of sustainable g-C3N4 in water oxidation.

Abstract
A new iron-oxalato polyoxometalate exhibits a remarkable photocoloration effect in the solid state based entirely on an intramolecular process.
A new photoresponsive molecular polyanion in which two Fe(iii) ions are simultaneously coordinated by two [A-α-PW9O34]9– polyoxometalate units and two oxalato ligands has been obtained. When irradiated with UV light its potassium salt, 1, exhibits a remarkable photocoloration effect, attributable to the partial reduction of the POM units to give rise to a mixed-valence species. The photoinduced process is intramolecular and involves electron transfer from the oxalato ligands, which partially decompose releasing CO2, towards the Fe(iii) and the POM. This mechanism has been confirmed by DRS, IR, XPS and Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetism and elemental analysis. An analogous derivative of 1 containing malonato ligands does not exhibit such photoactive behaviour, which is evidence that the oxalate ligand is essential for the photoactivity of 1. To our knowledge, 1 represents the first POM-based compound in which the photocoloration effect does not require the presence of intermolecular short interactions.

Abstract
Photo-responsive nanoscrolls can be successfully fabricated by mixing a polyfluoroalkyl azobenzene derivative and a niobate nanosheet, which is exfoliated from potassium hexaniobate. In this study, we have found that the photo-responsive nanoscroll shows a morphological motion of winding and unwinding, which is basically due to the nanosheet sliding within the nanoscroll, by efficient photo-isomerization reactions of the intercalated azobenzene in addition to the interlayer distance change of the nanoscrolls. The relative nanosheet sliding of the nanoscroll is estimated to be ca. 280 nm from the AFM morphology analysis. The distance of the sliding motion is over 20 times that of the averaged nanosheet sliding in the azobenzene/niobate hybrid film reported previously. Photo-responsive nanoscrolls can be expected to be novel photo-activated actuators and artificial muscle model materials.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of a novel hybrid material based on the combination of a 2D-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and a 1D-coordination polymer (1D-CP) has been achieved through a simple mixture of suspensions of both building blocks via an exfoliation/restacking approach. The hybrid material has been thoroughly characterized demonstrating that the 1D-CP moieties are intercalated as well as adsorbed on the surface of the LDH, giving rise to a layered assembly with the coexistence of the functionalities of their initial constituents. This hybrid represents the first example of the assembly of 1D/2D nanomaterials combining LDH with CP and opens the door for a plethora of different functional hybrid systems.

Abstract
Control over the self-assembly process of porous organic-inorganic hybrids often leads to unprecedented polymorphism and properties. Herein we demonstrate how light can be a powerful tool to intervene in the kinetically controlled mesoscale self-assembly of a coordination polymeric gelator. Ultraviolet light induced coordination modulation via photoisomerisation of an azobenzene based dicarboxylate linker followed by aggregation mediated crystal growth resulted in two distinct morphological forms (flowers and stars), which show subtle differences in their physical properties.

Abstract
Layered gadolinium hydroxides have revealed to be excellent candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration. These materials behave as pure 2D magnetic systems with a Heisenberg-Ising critical crossover, induced by dipolar interactions. This 2D character and the possibility offered by these materials to be delaminated open the possibility of rapid heat dissipation upon substrate deposition.

Abstract
Design of functional hybrids lies at the very core of synthetic chemistry as it has enabled the development of an unlimited number of solids displaying unprecedented or even improved properties built upon the association at the molecular level of quite disparate components by chemical design. Multifunctional hybrids are a particularly appealing case among hybrid organic/inorganic materials. Here, chemical knowledge is used to deploy molecular components bearing different functionalities within a single solid so that these properties can coexist or event interact leading to unprecedented phenomena. From a molecular perspective, this can be done either by controlled assembly of organic/inorganic molecular tectons into an extended architecture of hybrid nature or by intercalation of organic moieties within the empty channels or interlamellar space offered by inorganic solids with three-dimensional (MOFs, zeolites, and mesoporous hosts) or layered structures (phosphates, silicates, metal dichalcogenides, or anionic clays). This Account specifically illustrates the use of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in the preparation of magnetic hybrids, in line with the development of soft inorganic chemistry processes (also called "Chimie Douce"), which has significantly contributed to boost the preparation hybrid materials based on solid-state hosts and subsequent development of applications. Several features sustain the importance of LDHs in this context. Their magnetism can be manipulated at a molecular level by adequate choice of constituting metals and interlayer separation for tuning the nature and extent of magnetic interactions across and between planes. They display unparalleled versatility in accommodating a broad range of anionic species in their interlamellar space that encompasses not only simple anions but chemical systems of increasing dimensionality and functionalities. Their swelling characteristics allow for their exfoliation in organic solvents with high dielectric strength, to produce two-dimensional nanosheets with atomic thickness that can be used as macromolecular building blocks in the assembly of nanocomposites. We describe how these advantageous properties turn LDHs into excellent vehicles for the preparation of multifunctional materials with increasing levels of complexity. For clarity, the reader will first find a succinct description of the most relevant aspects controlling the magnetism of LDHs followed by their use in the preparation of magnetic hybrids from a molecular perspective. This includes the intercalation anionic species of increasing nuclearity like paramagnetic mononuclear complexes, stimulus-responsive molecular guests, one- and two-dimensional coordination polymers, or even preassembled 2D networks. This approach allows us to evolve from "dual-function" materials with coexistence, for example, of magnetism and superconductivity, to smart materials in which the magnetic or structural properties of the LDH layers can be tuned by applying an external stimulus like light or temperature. We will conclude with a brief look into the promising features offered by magnetic nanocomposites based on LDHs and our views on the most promising directions to be pursued in this context.

Abstract
Thermoplastic polymers like polyolefins, polyesters, polyamide, and styrene polymers are the most representative commodity plastics thanks to their cost-efficient manufacturing processes, excellent thermomechanical properties and their good environmental compatibility, including easy recycling. In the last few decades much effort has been devoted worldwide to extend the applications of such materials by conferring on them new properties through mixing and blending with different additives. In this latter context, nanocomposites have recently offered new exciting possibilities. This review discusses the successful use of nanostructured dispersed substrates in designing new stimuli-responsive nanocomposites; in particular, it provides an updated description of the synthetic routes to prepare nanostructured systems having the typical properties of thermoplastic polymers (continuous matrix), but showing enhanced optical, conductive, and thermal features dependent on the dispersion topology. The controlled nanodispersion of functional labeled clays, noble metal nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes is here evidenced to play a key role in producing hybrid thermoplastic materials that have been used in the design of devices, such as NLO devices, chemiresistors, temperature and deformation sensors.

Abstract
A hybrid magnetic multilayer material consisting of CoAl–LDH ferromagnetic layers intercalated with thermoresponsive molecules diluted with a flexible surfactant has been obtained.
A hybrid magnetic multilayer material of micrometric size, with highly crystalline hexagonal crystals consisting of CoAl–LDH ferromagnetic layers intercalated with thermoresponsive 4-(4-anilinophenylazo)benzenesulfonate (AO5) molecules diluted (ratio 9 : 1) with a flexible sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) surfactant has been obtained. The resulting material exhibits thermochromism attributable to the isomerization between the azo (prevalent at room temperature) and the hydrazone (favoured at higher temperatures) tautomers, leading to a thermomechanical response. In fact, these crystals exhibited thermally induced motion triggering remarkable changes in the crystal morphology and volume. In situ variable temperature XRD of these thin hybrids shows that the reversible change into the two tautomers is reflected in a shift of the position of the diffraction peaks at high temperatures towards lower interlayer spacing for the hydrazone form, as well as a broadening of the peaks reflecting lower crystallinity and ordering due to non-uniform spacing between the layers. These structural variations between room temperature (basal spacing (BS) = 25.91 Å) and 100 °C (BS = 25.05 Å) are also reflected in the magnetic properties of the layered double hydroxide (LDH) due to the variation of the magnetic coupling between the layers. Overall, our study constitutes one of the few examples showing fully reversible thermo-responsive breathing in a 2D hybrid material. In addition, the magnetic response of the hybrid can be modulated due to the thermotropism of the organic component that, by influencing the distance and in-plane correlation of the inorganic LDH, modulates the magnetism of the CoAl–LDH sheets in a certain range.
