Chemical Strain Engineering of Magnetism in Oxide Thin Films

Inferior Interfacial Superconductivity in 1 UC FeSe/SrVO3/SrTiO3 with Screened Interfacial Electron-Phonon Coupling

Single-unit cell (1 UC) FeSe interfaced with TiOx or FeOx exhibits significantly enhanced superconductivity compared to that of bulk FeSe, with interfacial electron-phonon coupling (EPC) playing a crucial role. However, the reduced dimensionality in 1 UC FeSe, which may drive superconducting fluctuations, complicates our understanding of the enhancement mechanisms. We construct a new superconducting interface, 1 UC FeSe/SrVO3/SrTiO3. Here, the itinerant electrons of highly metallic SrVO3 films can screen all high-energy Fuchs-Kliewer phonons, including those of SrTiO3, making it the first FeSe/oxide system with screened interfacial EPC while maintaining the 1 UC FeSe thickness. Despite comparable doping levels, the heavily electron-doped 1 UC FeSe/SrVO3 exhibits a pairing temperature (Tg ∼ 48 K) lower than those of FeSe/SrTiO3 and FeSe/LaFeO3. Our findings disentangle the contributions of interfacial EPC from dimensionality in terms of enhancing Tg in FeSe/oxide interfaces, underscoring the critical importance of interfacial EPC. This FeSe/VOx interface also provides a platform for studying interfacial superconductivity.

Unveiling the Electronic Structure of Pseudotetragonal WO3 Thin Films

WO3 is a 5d compound that undergoes several structural transitions in its bulk form. Its versatility is well-documented, with a wide range of applications, such as flexopiezoelectricity, electrochromism, gating-induced phase transitions, and its ability to improve the performance of Li-based batteries. The synthesis of WO3 thin films holds promise in stabilizing electronic phases for practical applications. However, despite its potential, the electronic structure of this material remains experimentally unexplored. Furthermore, its thermal instability limits its use in certain technological devices. Here, we employ tensile strain to stabilize WO3 thin films, which we call the pseudotetragonal phase, and investigate its electronic structure using a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. This study reveals the Fermiology of the system, notably identifying significant energy splittings between different orbital manifolds arising from atomic distortions. These splittings, along with the system's thermal stability, offer a potential avenue for controlling inter- and intraband scattering for electronic applications.

Strong Magnetic Anisotropy of Epitaxial PrVO3 Thin Films on SrTiO3 Substrates with Different Orientations

We have probed the structural and magnetic properties of PrVO₃ (PVO) thin films grown on the (001)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented SrTiO₃ (STO) substrates. By changing the substrate orientation, the film out-of-plane orientation can be tuned to [110], [100]/[010], and [011]/[311], with different in-plane crystallographic variants. Accommodation of these variants on the different substrates implies different strain states, which have direct influence on the magnetic properties of PVO films. The magnetic moment of PVO films radically enhances from 0.4 μ_B/f.u. for STO(001) to 2.3 μ_B/f.u. for STO(111). While films on the (001)-oriented STO substrate display out-of-plane anisotropy, an in-plane anisotropy is observed for films grown on the (110)- and (111)-oriented STO substrates. In addition, a strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is also extracted for a partially relaxed film on the (110)-oriented STO substrate. Such findings can help oxide community for the better understanding of magnetic anisotropy in vanadate thin films, a subject that still suffer from significant lack of scientific investigations.

Magneto-electric multiferroics: designing new materials from first-principles calculations

In parallel with the revival of interest for magneto-electric multiferroic materials in the beginning of the century, first-principles simulations have grown incredibly in efficiency during the last two decades. Density functional theory calculations, in particular, have so become a must-have tool for physicists and chemists in the multiferroic community. While these calculations were originally used to support and explain experimental behaviour, their interest has progressively moved to the design of novel magneto-electric multiferroic materials. In this article, we mainly focus on oxide perovskites, an important class of multifunctional material, and review some significant advances to which contributed first-principles calculations. We also briefly introduce the various theoretical developments that were at the core of all these advances.

Precession electron diffraction tomography on twinned crystals: application to CaTiO3 thin films

Strain engineering via epitaxial thin-film synthesis is an efficient way to modify the crystal structure of a material in order to induce new features or improve existing properties. One of the challenges in this approach is to quantify structural changes occurring in these films. While X-ray diffraction is the most widely used technique for obtaining accurate structural information from bulk materials, severe limitations appear in the case of epitaxial thin films. This past decade, precession electron diffraction tomography has emerged as a relevant technique for the structural characterization of nano-sized materials. While its usefulness has already been demonstrated for solving the unknown structure of materials deposited in the form of thin films, the frequent existence of orientation variants within the film introduces a severe bias in the structure refinement, even when using the dynamical diffraction theory to calculate diffracted intensities. This is illustrated here using CaTiO3 films deposited on SrTiO3 substrates as a case study. By taking into account twinning in the structural analysis, it is shown that the structure of the CaTiO3 films can be refined with an accuracy comparable to that obtained by dynamical refinement from non-twinned data. The introduction of the possibility to handle twin data sets is undoubtedly a valuable add-on and, notably, paves the way for a successful use of precession electron diffraction tomography for accurate structural analyses of thin films.

Morphological Evolution Induced through a Heterojunction of W-Decorated NiO Nanoigloos: Synergistic Effect on High-Performance Gas Sensors

Morphological evolution accompanying a surface roughening and preferred orientation is an effective way to realize a high-performance gas sensor because of its significant potential as a chemical catalyst through chemical potentials and atomic energy states. In this work, we investigated a heterojunction of double-side-W-decorated NiO nanoigloos fabricated through radio frequency sputtering and a soft-template method. Interestingly, a morphological evolution characterized by a pyramidal rough surface and the preferred orientation of the (111) plane was observed upon decorating the bare NiO nanoigloos with W. The underlying mechanism of the morphological evolution was precisely demonstrated based on the van der Drift competitive growth model originating from the oxygen transport and chemical strain in the lattice. The gas sensing properties of W-decorated NiO show an excellent NO₂ response and selectivity when compared to other gases. In addition, high response stability was evaluated under interference gas and humidity conditions. The synergistic effects on the sensing performance were interpreted on the basis of the morphological evolution of W-decorated NiO nanoigloos.

Synthesis and characterisation of fluorinated epitaxial films of BaFeO2F: tailoring magnetic anisotropyviaa lowering of tetragonal distortion

In this article, we report on the synthesis and characterisation of fluorinated epitaxial films of BaFeO₂F via low-temperature fluorination of thin films of BaFeO_2.5+d grown by pulsed laser deposition. Diffraction measurements show that fluoride incorporation only results in a contraction of the film perpendicular to the film surface, where clamping by the substrate is prohibitive for strong in-plane changes. The fluorinated films were found to be homogenous regarding the fluorine content over the whole film thickness, and can be considered as single crystal equivalents to the bulk phase BaFeO₂F. Surprisingly, fluorination resulted in the change of the tetragonal distortion to a nearly cubic symmetry, which results in a lowering of anisotropic orientation of the magnetic moments of the antiferromagnetically ordered compound, confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic studies.
