Mapping Energy Levels for Organic Heterojunctions

Self-Healing, Laminated, and Low Resistance NH3 Sensor Based on 6,6',6″-(Nitrilotris(benzene-4,1-diyl))tris(5-phenylpyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile) Sensing Material Operating at Room Temperature

With the rapid development of the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), gas sensors with the function of simulating the human sense of smell became irreplaceable as a key element. Among them, ammonia (NH3) sensors played an important role in respiration tests, environmental monitoring, safety, and other fields. However, the fabrication of the high-performance device with high stability and resistance to mechanical damages was still a challenge. In this work, polyurethane (PU) with excellent self-healing ability was applied as the substrate, and the sensor was designed from new sensitive material design and device structure optimization, through applying the organic molecule with groups which could absorb NH3 and the laminated structure to shorten the electronic transmission path to achieve a low resistance state and favorable sensing properties. Accordingly, a room temperature flexible NH3 sensor based on 6,6',6″-(nitrilotris(benzene-4,1-diyl))tris(5-phenylpyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile) (TPA-3DCNPZ) was successfully developed. The device could self-heal by means of a thermal evaporation assisted method. It exhibited a detection limit of 1 ppm at 98% relative humidity (RH), as well as great stability, selectivity, bending flexibility, and self-healing properties. The improved NH3 sensing performance under high RH was further investigated by complex impedance plots (CIPs) and density functional theory (DFT), attributing to the enhanced adsorption of NH3. The TPA-3DCNPZ based NH3 sensors proved to have great potential for application on simulated exhaled breath to determine the severity of kidney diseases and the progress of treatment. This work also provided new ideas for the construction of high-performance room temperature NH3 sensors.

Light-Induced Charge Accumulation in PTCDI/Pentacene/Ag(111) Heterojunctions

The incorporation of singlet fission (SF) chromophores in solar cells is expected to bring significant increases in the power conversion efficiency thanks to multiexciton generation. However, efficient charge generation in the device is determined by the energy level alignment (ELA) between the active materials, which should favor exciton transport and separation under illumination. By combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and optical differential reflectance measurements, we determine the ELA in a prototypical SF heterojunction between pentacene (Pc) and perylene-tetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) grown on Ag(111). Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such a system reveals light-induced modifications of the ELA; by measuring the transient shift of the core level photoemission lines we observe an accumulation of long-lived holes in the PTCDI within the first hundred picoseconds after the optical pump.

Binding and electronic level alignment of π-conjugated systems on metals

We review the binding and energy level alignment of π-conjugated systems on metals, a field which during the last two decades has seen tremendous progress both in terms of experimental characterization as well as in the depth of theoretical understanding. Precise measurements of vertical adsorption distances and the electronic structure together with ab initio calculations have shown that most of the molecular systems have to be considered as intermediate cases between weak physisorption and strong chemisorption. In this regime, the subtle interplay of different effects such as covalent bonding, charge transfer, electrostatic and van der Waals interactions yields a complex situation with different adsorption mechanisms. In order to establish a better understanding of the binding and the electronic level alignment of π-conjugated molecules on metals, we provide an up-to-date overview of the literature, explain the fundamental concepts as well as the experimental techniques and discuss typical case studies. Thereby, we relate the geometric with the electronic structure in a consistent picture and cover the entire range from weak to strong coupling.
