Self-Reporting Fiber-Reinforced Composites That Mimic the Ability of Biological Materials to Sense and Report Damage

Supramolecular Ionogels for Use in Locating Damage to Underwater Infrastructure

The capacity to self-detect and locate damage to underwater infrastructure in emergencies is vital, as materials and technologies that securely facilitate energy and information transmission are crucial in several fields. Herein, the development of a multifunctional supramolecular ionogel (SIG) and SIG-based devices for use in detecting and locating damage to underwater infrastructure is reported. The SIG is fabricated via the single-step photoinitiated copolymerization of hydroxy and fluorinated monomers in a fluorinated ionic liquid. Hydrogen-bond/ion-dipole-interaction synergy ensures that the SIG is highly ionically conductive and extremely mechanically strong, with underwater self-healing and adhesion properties. It can be used as an underwater ionic cable to provide reporting signals via changes in strain; furthermore, SIG-based devices can be fixed to underwater infrastructure to locate damage via resistance monitoring. The SIG can also be attached to the human body for use in underwater communication, thereby safeguarding maintenance personnel while repairing underwater infrastructure. This study provides a novel pathway for developing supramolecular materials and devices.

Force-triggered hypso- and bathochromic bidirectional fluorescence switching beyond 120 nm and its anticounterfeiting applications

Achieving high-contrast tricolor emissive regulation of a single-component molecule using a single type of external stimulus is highly desirable but challenging. In the present study, we report a symmetric acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A)-type aggregation-induced emission-active luminogen, which displays a sequential high-contrast fluorescence switching just by anisotropic mechanical grinding. Specifically, upon light grinding, an orange-yellow-to-blue hypsochromic mechanofluorochromic response with a distinct color contrast (change in the maximum emission wavelength, Δλem,max = 122 nm) is noticed, and the slightly ground solid exhibits a blue-to-red high-contrast (Δλem,max = 185 nm) bathochromic mechanofluorochromic conversion upon vigorous grinding. Thus, using a single luminogen developed here, we can realize wide-range (Δλem,max > 100 nm) hypso- and bathochromic fluorescence mechanochromisms simultaneously. The tricolored mechanofluorochromic phenomenon is attributed to two different morphological transitions involving crystalline-to-crystalline and crystalline-to-amorphous states. Furthermore, three information anticounterfeiting systems are developed using the luminogen presented here.

Autonomous indication of electrical degradation in polymers

Dielectric polymers are ubiquitous as electrical insulation in electronic devices and electrical systems. Electrical degradation of dielectric polymers tends to initiate catastrophic failure of numerous devices and systems, but its detection and early warning remain challenging. Here we report a general material strategy that signals the electrical degradation of dielectric polymers by autonomously presenting a visually discernible warning in the form of a pronounced colour change. This colour change is induced by the chromogenic response of molecular indicators blended with the polymer, which are chemically activated by the oxygen radicals generated in situ during the electrical degradation of the polymer. We unveil that the structural degradation and electrical properties of the dielectric polymer are quantitatively correlated with the colour difference. Such a chromogenic process is autonomous without the need of human intervention or other external energy, thus offering the convenience to lower or even eliminate the risk of dielectric failure.

Integrated FRET Polymers Spatially Reveal Micro- to Nanostructure and Irregularities in Electrospun Microfibers

A spatial view of macroscopic polymer material properties, in terms of nanostructure and irregularities, can help to better understand engineering processes such as when materials may fail. However, bridging the gap between the molecular-scale arrangement of polymer chains and the spatially resolved macroscopic properties of a material poses numerous difficulties. Herein, an integrated messenger material that can report on the material micro- to nanostructure and its processes is introduced. It is based on polymer chains labeled with fluorescent dyes that feature Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) dependent on chain conformation and concentration within a host polymer material. These FRET materials are integrated within electrospun polystyrene microfibers, and the FRET is analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Importantly, the use of CLSM allows a spatial view of material nanostructure and irregularities within the microfibers, where changes in FRET are significant when differences in fiber geometries and regularities exist. Furthermore, changes in FRET observed in damaged regions of the fibers indicate changes in polymer conformation and/or concentration as the material changes during compression. The system promises high utility for applications where nano-to-macro communication is needed for a better understanding of material processes.

Visible light-responsive materials: the (photo)chemistry and applications of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts in polymer science

Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) photoswitches have gained a lot of attention since their discovery in 2014. Their negative photochromism, visible light absorbance, synthetic tunability, and the large property changes between their photoisomers make them attractive candidates over other commonly used photoswitches for use in materials with responsive or adaptive properties. The development of such materials and their translation into advanced technologies continues to widely impact forefront materials research, and DASAs have thus attracted considerable interest in the field of visible-light responsive molecular switches and dynamic materials. Despite this interest, there have been challenges in understanding their complex behavior in the context of both small molecule studies and materials. Moreover, incorporation of DASAs into polymers can be challenging due to their incompatibility with the conditions for most common polymerization techniques. In this review, therefore, we examine and critically discuss the recent developments and challenges in the field of DASA-containing polymers, aiming at providing a better understanding of the interplay between the properties of both constituents (matrix and photoswitch). The first part summarizes current understanding of DASA design and switching properties. The second section discusses strategies of incorporation of DASAs into polymers, properties of DASA-containing materials, and methods for studying switching of DASAs in materials. We also discuss emerging applications for DASA photoswitches in polymeric materials, ranging from light-responsive drug delivery systems, to photothermal actuators, sensors and photoswitchable surfaces. Last, we summarize the current challenges in the field and venture on the steps required to explore novel systems and expand both the functional properties and the application opportunities of DASA-containing polymers.

Mechanochromism and Strain-Induced Crystallization in Thiol-yne-Derived Stereoelastomers

Most elastomers undergo strain-induced crystallization (SIC) under tension; as individual chains are held rigidly in a fixed position by an applied strain, their alignment along the strain field results in a shift from strain-hardening (SH) to SIC. A similar degree of stretching is associated with the tension necessary to accelerate mechanically coupled, covalent chemical responses of mechanophores in overstretched chains, raising the possibility of an interplay between the macroscopic response of SIC and the molecular response of mechanophore activation. Here, thiol-yne-derived stereoelastomers doped covalently with a dipropiolate-derivatized spiropyran (SP) mechanophore (0.25-0.38 mol%) are reported. The material properties of SP-containing films are consistent with undoped controls, indicating that the SP is a reporter of the mechanical state of the polymer. Uniaxial tensile tests reveal correlations between mechanochromism and SIC, which are strain-rate-dependent. When mechanochromic films are stretched slowly to the point of mechanophore activation, the covalently tethered mechanophore remains trapped in a force-activated state, even after the applied stress is removed. Mechanophore reversion kinetics correlate with the applied strain rate, resulting in highly tunable decoloration rates. Because these polymers are not covalently crosslinked, they are recyclable by melt-pressing into new films, increasing their potential range of strain-sensing, morphology-sensing, and shape-memory applications.

Transient regulation of gel properties by chemical reaction networks

Transient regulation of gel properties by chemical reaction networks (CRNs) represents an emerging and effective strategy to program or temporally control the structures, properties, and functions of gel materials in a self-regulated manner. CRNs provide significant opportunities to construct complex or sustainable gels with excellent dynamic features, thus expanding the application scope of these materials. CRN-based methods for transiently regulating the gel properties are receiving increasing attention, and the related fields are worth further studying. This feature article focuses on the CRN-mediated transient regulation of six properties of gels, which are transient gelation, transient liquefaction of gels, transient assembly of macroscopic gels, temporary actuation of gels, transient healing ability of kinetically inert gels, and cascade reaction-based self-reporting of external stimuli. Recent advances that showcase the six properties of gels controlled by CRNs are featured, the characterization and structural elucidation of gels are detailed, and the significance, achievements, and expectations of this field are discussed. The strategy of transient regulation of gel properties via CRNs is potentially useful for building the next generation of adaptive functional materials.

Characterization Techniques of Polymer Aging: From Beginning to End

Polymers have been widely applied in various fields in the daily routines and the manufacturing. Despite the awareness of the aggressive and inevitable aging for the polymers, it still remains a challenge to choose an appropriate characterization strategy for evaluating the aging behaviors. The difficulties lie in the fact that the polymer features from the different aging stages require different characterization methods. In this review, we present an overview of the characterization strategies preferable for the initial, accelerated, and late stages during polymer aging. The optimum strategies have been discussed to characterize the generation of radicals, variation of functional groups, substantial chain scission, formation of low-molecular products, and deterioration in the polymers' macro-performances. In view of the advantages and the limitations of these characterization techniques, their utilization in a strategic approach is considered. In addition, we highlight the structure-property relationship for the aged polymers and provide available guidance for lifetime prediction. This review could allow the readers to be knowledgeable of the features for the polymers in the different aging stages and provide access to choose the optimum characterization techniques. We believe that this review will attract the communities dedicated to materials science and chemistry.

Nanocomposite Hydrogels as Functional Extracellular Matrices

Over recent years, nano-engineered materials have become an important component of artificial extracellular matrices. On one hand, these materials enable static enhancement of the bulk properties of cell scaffolds, for instance, they can alter mechanical properties or electrical conductivity, in order to better mimic the in vivo cell environment. Yet, many nanomaterials also exhibit dynamic, remotely tunable optical, electrical, magnetic, or acoustic properties, and therefore, can be used to non-invasively deliver localized, dynamic stimuli to cells cultured in artificial ECMs in three dimensions. Vice versa, the same, functional nanomaterials, can also report changing environmental conditions-whether or not, as a result of a dynamically applied stimulus-and as such provide means for wireless, long-term monitoring of the cell status inside the culture. In this review article, we present an overview of the technological advances regarding the incorporation of functional nanomaterials in artificial extracellular matrices, highlighting both passive and dynamically tunable nano-engineered components.

Advances in polysaccharide-based nano/microcapsules for biomedical applications: A review

Biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharides are abundant and renewable natural materials. Polysaccharides and their derivatives are developed into various carrier materials for biomedical applications. In particular, advanced polysaccharide-based nano/microcapsules have received extensive attention in biomedical applications due to their good encapsulation ability and tunability. In recent years, polysaccharide-based nano/microcapsules have been widely used in drug carriers, gene carriers, antigen carriers, wound dressings, bioimaging and biosensors. Numerous research results have confirmed the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of polysaccharide-based nano/microcapsules in the above-mentioned biomedical applications. This review discussed and analyzed the latest research strategies and design considerations for these applications in detail. The preparation methods, application strategies, and design considerations of polysaccharide-based nano/microcapsules are summarized and analyzed, and their challenges and future research prospects in biomedicine are further discussed. It is expected to provide researchers with inspiration and design ideas.

Self-reporting of damage in underwater hierarchical ionic skins via cascade reaction-regulated chemiluminescence

Self-reporting of damage in underwater materials allows on-demand maintenance and, therefore, improves the reliability of materials used in aquatic environments. Here, we report a chemiluminescence-based strategy to self-report the mechanical damage (e.g., fracture or puncture) in underwater hierarchical ionic skins (HI-skins). The chemiluminescence-based self-reporting is regulated by a cascade reaction, which first occurs at the interface between water and the damage location and then spreads through the whole material. When the HI-skins were mechanically damaged underwater, the pre-embedded calcium peroxide became exposed to and reacted with water to generate hydrogen peroxide that further activated the peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence reaction for reporting the damage. The luminescence wavelength could be tuned (439, 508, or 603 nm) and the damage-induced luminescence lasted for up to 12 h. The self-reporting HI-skins also displayed high mechanical and electronic restorability (93% healing efficiency), excellent stretchability (1600%), impressive room-temperature ionic conductivity (1.7 × 10^-4 S cm^-1), and durable strain sensing performance (highly reproducible electrical response over 1000 uninterrupted strain cycles), making them suitable and reliable candidates for underwater soft ionotronics.

Synthesis of Smart Nanofiber Coatings with Autonomous Self-Warning and Self-Healing Functions

Organic protective coatings are widely used to protect metal structures from corrosion but they are vulnerable to undetectable damage. Without timely detection and repair, it could lead to severe consequences. How to warn and heal damaged areas simultaneously and automatically has become a challenging problem. Herein, we report an intelligent protective coating with self-warning and self-healing functions. This strategy was achieved by embedding bifunctional nanofibers containing 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) in organic coatings. The nanofibers with Phen as a core and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)─chitosan (CS) blend solution as a shell were synthesized by coaxial electrospinning. The PVA/CS@Phen nanofiber-embedded coating displayed self-healing and high contrast indication function of the damaged area on coatings. Prominent red could warn microdamage and macrosurface damage, which occurred rapidly and healed permanently. The intelligent coating exhibited high healing performance under artificial injury with self-warning characteristics, and the cure rate was about 98.4% without external intervention. In the healing process, free amino groups of CS in the shell of nanofibers enhanced the sustained release of Phen. This convenient, economical, and efficient strategy with cooperative functions of self-warning and self-healing delivers an effective solution for prolonging the service life of protective coatings. This multifunctional coating exhibits excellent potential in the field of marine engineering applications.

Autonomous Visualization of Damage in Polymers by Metal-Free Polymerizations of Microencapsulated Activated Alkynes

The development of autonomous materials with desired performance and built-in visualizable sensing units is of great academic and industrial significance. Although a wide range of damage indication methods have been reported, the "turn-on" sensing mechanism by damaging events based on microcapsule systems, especially those relying on chemical reactions to elicit a chromogenic response, are still very limited. Herein, a facile and metal-free polymerization route with an interesting reaction-induced coloration effect is demonstrated. Under the catalysis of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), the polymerizations of difunctional or trifunctional activated alkynes proceed very quickly at 0 °C in air. A series of polymers composed of stereoregular enyne structure (major unit) and divinyl ether structure (minor unit) are obtained. Both the catalyst and monomers are colorless while the polymerized products are deep-colored. This process can be applied for the damage visualization of polymers using the microencapsulation technique. Microcapsules containing the reactive alkyne monomer are prepared and mixed in a DABCO-dispersed polymer film. Both the external and internal damage regions of this composite film can be readily visualized once the reaction is initiated from the ruptured microcapsules. Moreover, the newly formed polymer automatically seals the cracks with an additional protection function.

We have developed a novel aminobenzopyranoxanthene-based mechanophore with a dual-signal response and two mechanogenerated ring-opened isomers, of which the relative distribution is modulated by external force based on the heat–force equilibrium.

Mechanoluminescence Rebrightening the Prospects of Stress Sensing: A Review

The emergence of new applications, such as in artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and biotechnology, has driven the evolution of stress sensing technology. For these emerging applications, stretchability, remoteness, stress distribution, a multimodal nature, and biocompatibility are important performance characteristics of stress sensors. Mechanoluminescence (ML)-based stress sensing has attracted widespread attention because of its characteristics of remoteness and having a distributed response to mechanical stimuli as well as its great potential for stretchability, biocompatibility, and self-powering. In the past few decades, great progress has been made in the discovery of ML materials, analysis of mechanisms, design of devices, and exploration of applications. One can find that with this progress, the focus of ML research has shifted from the phenomenon in the earliest stage to materials and recently toward devices. At the present stage, while showing great prospects for advanced stress sensing applications, ML-based sensing still faces major challenges in material optimization, device design, and system integration.

Prevent or Cure-The Unprecedented Need for Self-Reporting Materials

Self-reporting smart materials are highly relevant in modern soft matter materials science, as they allow for the autonomous detection of changes in synthetic polymers, materials, and composites. Despite critical advantages of such materials, for example, prolonged lifetime or prevention of disastrous material failures, they have gained much less attention than self-healing materials. However, as diagnosis is critical for any therapy, it is of the utmost importance to report the existence of system changes and their exact location to prevent them from spreading. Thus, we herein critically review the chemistry of self-reporting soft matter materials systems and highlight how current challenges and limitations may be overcome by successfully transferring self-reporting research concepts from the laboratory to the real world. Especially in the space of diagnostic self-reporting systems, the recent SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic indicates an urgent need for such concepts that may be able to detect the presence of viruses or bacteria on and within materials in a self-reporting fashion.

Self-Diagnostic Polymers-Inline Detection of Thermal Degradation of Unsaturated Poly(ester imide)s

Monitoring polymer degradation is an important quest, particularly relevant for industry. Although many indirect methodologies for assessing polymer degradation exist, only few are applicable for an inline-monitoring via optic detection-systems. An inline-monitoring system is introduced for the thermal degradation of crosslinked poly(ester imide)s (PEIs) by embedding trifluoroacetyl functionalized stilbene molecules, serving as chemosensors to track the release of generated alcoholic byproducts. Nucleophilic addition of an alcohol to the sensors trifluoroacetyl functionality triggers hemiacetal formation which is accompanied by significant changes in optical properties, in turn allowing monitoring of sensor activation by direct spectroscopy. Fluorescence spectroscopy offers an easy detection tool for the inline thermal monitoring of PEI-degradation.

Robust Damage-Reporting Strategy Enabled by Dual-Compartment Microcapsules

Dye-filled microcapsules are an attractive way to identify microscopic damage of materials by the naked eye. However, there are many disadvantages in traditional microcapsule-based self-reporting materials, such as a poor self-reporting effect. A new concept for the design of self-reporting microcapsules is presented here. Our work develops a novel kind of dual-compartmental microcapsule via Pickering emulsion photopolymerization, which can encapsulate two interacting species ("pro-dye" and "developer") separately in a single microcapsule. In our strategy, SiO₂ microspheres encapsulating polyetheramine (PEA, developer) were first prepared and employed as a Pickering emulsifier to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions, in which the oil phase consisted of 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF, pro-dye) and a monomer. After the monomer polymerization, a dual-compartment microcapsule, which encapsulated the pro-dye in the core and the developer in the shell, was obtained. Upon the rupture of the microcapsule, the pro-dye and the developer were released simultaneously and reacted to yield a pronounced chromogenic response. Compared with traditional double-microcapsule systems, this dual-compartment microcapsule system demonstrated a more efficient and pronounced self-reporting effect. This is the first time that a double-encapsulation scheme involving the compartmentalized release of two interacting species within a single microcapsule has been demonstrated for self-reporting, which overcomes the tough problems of the uneven distribution of the traditional double-microcapsule systems.

Stimulus Responsive Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework to Achieve Corrosion Sensing and Active Protecting in Polymeric Coatings

Metal substrates beneath polymeric coatings are susceptible to localized corrosion, which could result in lifetime reduction and catastrophic failure without timely repair treatment. In situ detection of corrosion and repair coating defects are in high demand yet challenging to fulfill so far. Herein, we report a smart polymeric coating by integrating nanosensors into the coating matrix, which is capable of efficient corrosion sensing and active anticorrosion protecting. The nanosensors were constructed by zeolitic imidazolate framework encapsulated with the polyethylene glycol-tannic acid complex. The morphology, chemical constitution, and stimulus responsiveness of nanosensors were systematically analyzed. The generation of local corrosion beneath coating can be promptly sensed and reported by a conspicuous purple color derived from tannic-iron ion coordinates. Meanwhile, local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results proved that the metal degradation process at the defected interface can be largely inhibited, exhibiting active anticorrosion property. Furthermore, the constructed smart coating possessed superior impermeability and long-term protective performance under simulated seawater and harsh salts spray conditions. This feasible and effective strategy based on simple nanosensors to engineer smart coatings paves a new way to develop high environmental adaptability protective materials with protecting, corrosion sensing, and self-healing functions.

Polymer-Based Mechanochromic Composite Material Using Encapsulated Systems

The development of mechanochromic or self-reporting polymers that can indicate damage or fatigue of materials with an optical signal has become of paramount interest to ensure the reliability of the materials and prevent catastrophic failure. This technology can potentially find usefulness for various applications, including in situ monitoring of mechanical events and structural health monitoring systems. An emerging and versatile approach to achieve mechanochromic properties relies on the encapsulation of dye solutions that can be released and activated (chemically or physically) when the walls of the capsules are mechanically damaged. While the mechanochromic effect can be achieved with different types of dyes and operating principles, this framework can also be designed with encapsulating-containers of different shapes and shell materials, such as microcapsules, hollow glass fibers, vascular networks, and micelles, making this concept applicable to a broad range of polymer matrices. An overview of the different encapsulation approaches that have been employed to prepare mechanochromic polymers is given, with a focus on the containers used for this purpose. A brief description of the containers' preparation is provided, and their associated chromic operating principles and progress in their designs are reviewed.

An engineer's introduction to mechanophores

Mechanophores (MPs) are a class of stimuli-responsive materials that are of increasing interest to engineers due to their potential applications as stress sensors. These mechanically responsive molecules change color or become fluorescent upon application of a mechanical stimulus as they undergo a chemical reaction when a load is applied. By incorporating MPs such as spirolactam, spiropyran, or dianthracene into a material system, the real-time stress distribution of the matrix can be directly observed through a visual response, ideal for damage and failure sensing applications. A wide array of applications that require continuous structural health monitoring could benefit from MPs including flexible electronics, protective coatings, and polymer matrix composites. However, there are significant technical challenges preventing MP implementation in industry. Effective strategies to quantitatively calibrate the photo response of the MP with applied stress magnitudes must be developed. Additionally, environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, and ultraviolet light exposure can potentially impact the performance of MPs. By addressing these limitations, engineers can work to move MPs from the synthetic chemistry bench to the field. This review aims to highlight recent progress in MP research, discuss barriers to implementation, and provide an outlook on the future of MPs, specifically focused on polymeric material systems. Although the focus is on engineering MPs for bulk materials, a brief overview of mechanochemistry will be discussed followed by methods for activation and quantification of MP photo response (concentrating specifically on fluorescently active species). Finally, current challenges and future directions in MP research will be addressed.

Mechanochromic Polymers Based on Microencapsulated Solvatochromic Dyes

The development of polymers with built-in sensors that provide readily perceptible optical warning signs of mechanical events has received considerable interest. A simple and versatile concept to bestow polymers with mechanochromic behavior is the incorporation of dye-filled microcapsules. Such capsules release their cargo when their shell is damaged, and the dye is subsequently activated through a chemical or physical change that causes a chromogenic response. Here, we report the preparation of fluorescent poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules containing solutions of a solvatochromic cyanostilbene dye and their integration in different polymers. When objects made from such composites are damaged, the dye solution is released from the containers, diffuses into the matrix, and the solvent evaporates. As a result, the polarity around the dye molecules changes, and this leads to a change of the fluorescence color. Alternatively, the dye is blended into the polymer matrix, microcapsules are loaded with a solvent, and the release of the latter triggers the color change. Both mechanisms afford ratiometric signals because the capsules that remain intact or dye molecules that are not exposed to the solvent can be used as a built-in reference; therefore, a quantitative assessment of the damage inflicted on the material is a priori possible.

Bioinspired Healable Mechanochromic Function from Fluorescent Polyurethane Composite Film

Camouflage and wound healing are two vital functions for cephalopods to survive from dangerous ocean risks. Inspired by these dual functions, herein, we report a new type of healable mechanochromic (HMC) material. The bifunctional HMC material consists of two tightly bonded layers. One layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) for shielding. Another layer contains supramolecular hydrogen bonding polymers and fluorochromes for healing. The as‐synthesized HMC material exhibits a tunable and reversible mechanochromic function due to the strain‐induced surface structure of composite film. The mechanochromic function can be further restored after damage because of the incorporated healable polyurethane. The healing efficiency of the damaged HMC materials can even reach 98 % at 60 °C for 6 h. The bioinspired HMC material is expected to have potential applications in the information encryption and flexible displays.

Detection of stress in polymers: mechanochemical activation of CuAAC click reactions in poly(urethane) networks

We report on copper(i)-bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)s (NHC) for quantitative stress-sensing, embedded within polyurethane networks, triggering a fluorogenic copper(i) azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) of 8-azido-2-naphtol and 3-hydroxy phenylacetylene. A completely transparent, force responsive poly(urethane) material is generated, allowing a quantification of the applied stress.

Microcapsule encapsulated with leuco dye as a visual sensor for concrete damage indicationviacolor variation

A microcapsule-type visualization sensor for concrete structural damage indication is proposed in this article. Crystal violet lactone, as damage indicator, was microencapsulated within poly(methyl methacrylate) to synthesize the sensor. The successful encapsulation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Microcapsules of different diameters and size distributions were obtained by varied stirring speeds. The fabricated microcapsules were embedded into a polymer coating to accomplish the damage indication. When cracks propagated in the coating, the crystal violet lactone in leuco form was released from the ruptured microcapsules. Due to reacting with silicon dioxide in concrete, the released crystal violet lactone turned blue and highlighted the damaged area. It was verified that the visualization performance of the sensor showed good durability in both dry and wet conditions. The proposed microcapsule-type visualization sensor has advantages of easy fabrication, high indication stability, and no special equipment requirements, which will reduce the complexity of concrete structural health monitoring significantly.

Durable and Robust Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Co-PDMS@ZIF-8-Coated MWCNT Films for Extremely Efficient Emulsion Separation

The discharge of large amounts of sewage has caused enormous damage to the environment and human health. There is an urgent need for efficient and environmentally friendly materials to deal with such troubles. Materials with emulsion separation have attracted everyone's attention. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8- and Co-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified multiwalled carbon nanotube films were fabricated. First, the surface of the nanotube films was modified with ZIF-8 by in situ growth, and then a Co-PDMS layer was added by dip coating. The membrane has excellent wettability, and it is superhydrophobic and superoleophilic in air. The separation efficiency of water-in-oil emulsions reaches more than 99.9%, and it has an outstanding separation ability for corrosive emulsions. Moreover, the membrane has an excellent self-healing ability, and it can rapidly heal at normal temperature after being damaged. This makes the film more suitable for practical oily wastewater treatment. We performed related research and propose a possible self-healing mechanism.

Monitoring the failure forms of a composite laminate system by using panda polarization maintaining fiber Bragg gratings

In this paper, the property of panda polarization maintaining fiber Bragg gratings (PPM-FBGs) embedded in a composite laminate system (CLS) under a transversal force from 1 × 10⁵ Pa to 5 × 10⁵ Pa is explored. Both the wavelengths shift and the rotation angle of the principal axes of the PPM-FBGs are surveyed theoretically. We investigate the corresponding relation between the direction of external force and the rotation angle of principal axes of the PPM-FBGs and prove that the magnitude and direction of the strain distribution in the CLS can be monitored simultaneously, which can realize the detection of interlaminar damage of the CLS. We find that the strain, which corresponds to the shift of wavelengths of the PPM-FBGs, has a different angular dependence, and therefore the potential failure forms of the CLS can be differentiated.

A Hierarchical Nanoparticle-in-Micropore Architecture for Enhanced Mechanosensitivity and Stretchability in Mechanochromic Electronic Skins

Biological tissues are multiresponsive and functional, and similar properties might be possible in synthetic systems by merging responsive polymers with hierarchical soft architectures. For example, mechanochromic polymers have applications in force-responsive colorimetric sensors and soft robotics, but their integration into sensitive, multifunctional devices remains challenging. Herein, a hierarchical nanoparticle-in-micropore (NP-MP) architecture in porous mechanochromic polymers, which enhances the mechanosensitivity and stretchability of mechanochromic electronic skins (e-skins), is reported. The hierarchical NP-MP structure results in stress-concentration-induced mechanochemical activation of mechanophores, significantly improving the mechanochromic sensitivity to both tensile strain and normal force (critical tensile strain: 50% and normal force: 1 N). Furthermore, the porous mechanochromic composites exhibit a reversible mechanochromism under a strain of 250%. This architecture enables a dual-mode mechanochromic e-skin for detecting static/dynamic forces via mechanochromism and triboelectricity. The hierarchical NP-MP architecture provides a general platform to develop mechanochromic composites with high sensitivity and stretchability.

Synthesis of calcium carbonate microcapsules as self-healing containers

Contemporary studies of self-healing polymer composites are based on microcapsules synthesized using synthetic and toxic polymers, biopolymers, etc. via methods such as in situ polymerization, electrospraying, and air atomization. Herein, we synthesized a healing agent, epoxy (EPX) encapsulated calcium carbonate (CC) microcapsules, which was used to prepare self-healing EPX composites as a protective coating for metals. The CC microcapsules were synthesized using two facile methods, namely, the soft-template method (STM) and the in situ emulsion method (EM). Microcapsules prepared using the STM (ST-CC) were synthesized using sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) surfactant micelles as the soft-template, while the microcapsules prepared using the EM (EM-CC) were synthesized in an oil-in-water (O/W) in situ emulsion. These prepared CC microcapsules were characterized using light microscopy (LMC), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synthesized ST-CC microcapsules were spherical in shape, with an average diameter of 2.5 μm and an average shell wall thickness of 650 nm, while EM-CC microcapsules had a near-spherical shape with an average diameter of 3.4 μm and an average shell wall thickness of 880 nm. The ST-CC capsules exhibited flake-like rough surfaces while EM-CC capsules showed smooth bulgy surfaces. The loading capacity of ST-CC and EM-CC microcapsules were estimated using TGA and found to be 11% and 36%, respectively. The FTIR and NMR spectra confirmed the EPX encapsulation and the unreactive nature of the loaded EPX with the inner walls of CC microcapsules. The synthesized CC microcapsules were further incorporated into an EPX matrix to prepare composite coatings with 10 (w/w%), 20 (w/w%), and 50 (w/w%) capsule loadings. The prepared EPX composite coatings were scratched and observed using FE-SEM and LMC to evaluate the release of encapsulated EPX inside the CC capsules, which is analogous to the healing behaviour. Moreover, EPX composite coatings with 20 (w/w%) and 50 (w/w%) of ST-CC showed better healing performances. Thus, it was observed that ST-CC microcapsules outperformed EM-CC. Additionally, the EPX/CC coatings showed remarkable self-healing properties by closing the gaps of the scratch surfaces. Thus, these formaldehyde-free, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic CC based EPX composite coatings hold great potential to be used as a protective coating for metal substrates. Primary results detected significant corrosion retardancy due to the self-healing coatings under an accelerated corrosion process, which was performed with a salt spray test.

Microcapsule-Containing Self-Reporting Polymers

Self-reporting polymers, which can indicate damage or exposure to excessive stress with a clearly perceptible optical signal, are potentially useful for several technological applications, including stress-sensitive sensors that enable in situ monitoring of mechanical events and structural health monitoring systems. A versatile and simple concept to realize this function is the exploitation of microcapsules that are filled with solutions of dyes that are released and chemically or physically activated when the protective shell is damaged. Such microcapsules can readily be incorporated into polymers and the composites thus made can be processed into films, coatings, or other objects. Mechanochromic effects can be realized with different types of dyes and activation schemes. In this concept article, a selection of recent key studies is presented to provide an overview of the state of the field. Different architectures and operating principles and their advantages and drawbacks are reviewed. The parameters that influence the design of microcapsule-based mechanochromic systems are considered and unexplored chromophore systems that might be useful to design future self-reporting polymers are discussed. Finally, specific aspects of capsule design, fabrication, and integration into polymers are presented. Throughout the article, challenges and opportunities of the concept are highlighted and possible future directions are discussed.
