Microfluidic strategies for engineering oxygen-releasing biomaterials

In the field of tissue engineering, local hypoxia in large-cell structures (larger than 1 mm3) poses a significant challenge. Oxygen-releasing biomaterials supply an innovative solution through oxygen ⁠ delivery in a sustained and controlled manner. Compared to traditional methods such as emulsion, sonication, and agitation, microfluidic technology offers distinct benefits for oxygen-releasing material production, including controllability, flexibility, and applicability. It holds enormous potential in the production of smart oxygen-releasing materials. This review comprehensively covers the fabrication and application of microfluidic-enabled oxygen-releasing biomaterials. To begin with, the physical mechanism of various microfluidic technologies and their differences in oxygen carrier preparation are explained. Then, the distinctions among diverse oxygen-releasing components in regards for oxygen-releasing mechanism, oxygen-carrying capacity, and duration of oxygen release are presented. Finally, the present obstacles and anticipated development trends are examined together with the application outcomes of oxygen-releasing biomaterials based on microfluidic technology in the biomedical area. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Oxygen is essential for sustaining life, and hypoxia (a condition of low oxygen) is a significant challenge in various diseases. Microfluidic-based oxygen-releasing biomaterials offer precise control and outstanding performance, providing unique advantages over traditional approaches for tissue engineering. However, comprehensive reviews on this topic are currently lacking. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of various microfluidic technologies and their applications for developing oxygen-releasing biomaterials. We compare the characteristics of organic and inorganic oxygen-releasing biomaterials and highlight the latest advancements in microfluidic-enabled oxygen-releasing biomaterials for tissue engineering, wound healing, and drug delivery. This review may hold the potential to make a significant contribution to the field, with a profound impact on the scientific community.

Dielectric Liquid Microlens Array with Tunable Focal Length Based on Microdroplet Array Created via Dip-Coating Method

A dielectric liquid microlens array (LMA) with a tunable focal length was fabricated by using a microdroplet array generated through the dip-coating method. The process began with treating the octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) layer with selective UV/O3 irradiation for 20 min to establish a hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterning surface. The substrate was subsequently immersed in glycerol and then withdrawn at a constant rate to create a microdroplet array. Upon filling the cell with matching oil (SL5267) and placing it within a square array of a 200 μm diameter glycerol microdroplet array, the LMA was produced. The focal length ranged from approximately -0.96 to -0.3 mm within a voltage range of 0 to 60 Vrms. The glycerol microdroplets, characterized by their shapes, sizes, curvatures, and filling factors, can be precisely controlled by designing an OTS patterning or adjusting the dip-coating speed. This approach offers a rapid and high-throughput method for preparation. Our approach to fabricating tunable LMA offers several advantages, including simplicity of fabrication, uniform structural properties, cost-effectiveness, polarization independence, and excellent optical performance. These focus-tunable LMAs hold significant potential for applications in image processing, 3D displays, medical endoscopy, and military technologies.

Manipulation of Convection Using Infrared Light Emitted from Human Hands

Control of convection plays an important role in heat transfer regulation, bio/chemical sensing, phase separation, etc. Current convection controlling systems generally depend on engineered energy sources to drive and manipulate the convection, which brings additional energy consumption into the system. Here the use of human hand as a natural and sustainable infrared (IR) radiation source for the manipulation of liquid convection is demonstrated. The fluid can sense the change of the relative position or the shape of the hand with the formation of different convection patterns. Besides the generation of static complex patterns, dynamic manipulation of convections can also be realized via moving of hand or finger. The use of such sustainable convections to control the movement of a floating "boat" is further achieved. The use of human hands as the natural energy sources provides a promising approach for the manipulation of liquid convection without the need of extra external energy, which may be further utilized for low-cost and intelligent bio/chemical sensing and separation.

Free-Boundary Microfluidic Platform for Advanced Materials Manufacturing and Applications

Microfluidics, with its remarkable capacity to manipulate fluids and droplets at the microscale, has emerged as a powerful platform in numerous fields. In contrast to conventional closed microchannel microfluidic systems, free-boundary microfluidic manufacturing (FBMM) processes continuous precursor fluids into jets or droplets in a relatively spacious environment. FBMM is highly regarded for its superior flexibility, stability, economy, usability, and versatility in the manufacturing of advanced materials and architectures. In this review, a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in FBMM is provided, encompassing technical principles, advanced material manufacturing, and their applications. FBMM is categorized based on the foundational mechanisms, primarily comprising hydrodynamics, interface effects, acoustics, and electrohydrodynamic. The processes and mechanisms of fluid manipulation are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the manufacturing of advanced materials in various dimensions ranging from zero-dimensional to three-dimensional, as well as their diverse applications in material science, biomedical engineering, and engineering are presented. Finally, current progress is summarized and future challenges are prospected. Overall, this review highlights the significant potential of FBMM as a powerful tool for advanced materials manufacturing and its wide-ranging applications.

Programmable and Pixelated Solute Concentration Fields Controlled by Three-Dimensionally Networked Microfluidic Source/Sink Arrays

Membrane-integrated microfluidic platforms have played a pivotal role in understanding natural phenomena coupled with solute concentration gradients at the micro- and nanoscale, enabling on-chip microscopy in well-defined planar concentration fields. However, the standardized two-dimensional fabrication schemes in microfluidics have impeded the realization of more complex and diverse chemical environmental conditions due to the limited possible arrangements of source/sink conditions in a fluidic domain. In this study, we present a microfluidic platform with a three-dimensional microchannel network design, where discretized membranes can be integrated and individually controlled in a two-dimensional array format at any location within the entire quasi-two-dimensional solute concentration field. We elucidate the principles of the device to implement operations of the pixel-like sources/sinks and dynamically programmable control of various long-lasting solute concentration fields. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of the generated solute concentration fields in manipulating the transport of micrometer or submicrometer particles with a high degree of freedom, surpassing conventionally available solute concentration fields. This work provides an experimental tool for investigating complex systems under high-order chemical environmental conditions, thereby facilitating the extensive development of higher-performance micro- and nanotechnologies.

Analyses of Pore-Size-Dependent Ionic Transport in Nanopores in the Presence of Concentration and Temperature Gradients

Mass transport through nanopores occurs in various natural systems, including the human body. For example, ion transport across nerve cell membranes plays a significant role in neural signal transmission, which can be significantly affected by the electrolyte and temperature conditions. To better understand and control the underlying nanoscopic transport, it is necessary to develop multiphysical transport models as well as validate them using enhanced experimental methods for facile nanopore fabrication and precise nanoscale transport characterization. Here, we report a nanopore-integrated microfluidic platform to characterize ion transport in the presence of electrolyte and temperature gradients; we employ our previous self-assembled particle membrane (SAPM)-integrated microfluidic platform to produce various nanopores with different pore sizes. Subsequently, we quantify pore-size-dependent ionic transport by measuring the short circuit current (SCC) and open circuit voltage (OCV) across various nanopores by manipulating the electrolyte and temperature gradients. We establish three simple theoretical models that heavily depend on pore size, electrolyte concentration, and temperature and subsequently validate them with the experimental results. Finally, we anticipate that the results of this study would help clarify ion transport phenomena at low-temperature conditions, not only providing a fundamental understanding but also enabling practical applications of cryo-anesthesia in the near future.

A Bubble-Assisted Approach for Patterning Nanoscale Molecular Aggregates

We demonstrate a new approach to pattern functional organic molecules with a template of foams, and achieve a resolution of sub 100 nm. The bubble-assisted assembly (BAA) process is consisted of two periods, including bubble evolution and molecular assembly, which are dominated by the Laplace pressure and molecular interactions, respectively. Using TPPS (meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin), we systematically investigate the patterns and assembly behaviour in the bubble system with a series of characterizations, which show good uniformity in nanoscale resolution. Theoretical simulations reveal that TPPS's J-aggregates contribute to the ordered construction of molecular patterns. Finally, we propose an empirical rule for molecular patterning approach, that the surfactant and functional molecules should have the same type of charge in a two-component system. This approach exhibits promising feasibility to assemble molecular patterns at nanoscale resolution for micro/nano functional devices.

Direct Single-Step Printing of Conductive Grids on Curved Surfaces Using Template-Guided Foaming

Advanced transparent conductors have been studied intensively in the aspects of materials, structures, and printing methods. The material and structural advancements have been successfully accomplished with various conductive nanomaterials and spring-like structures for better electrical conductivity and high mechanical flexibility of the transparent conductors. However, the capability to print submicrometer conductive patterns directly and conformally on curved surfaces with low processing cost and high throughput remains a technological challenge to achieve, primarily because of the original two-dimensional (2D) nature of conventional lithography processes. In our study, we exploit a liquid-mediated patterning approach in the development of flexible templates, enabling printing of curvilinear silver grids in a single-step and strain-free manner at a submicrometer resolution within several minutes with minimum loss of noble metals. The template can guide arrays of receding liquid-air interfaces on curved substrates during liquid evaporation, thereby generating ordered 2D foam structures that can confine and assemble silver nanoparticles in grid patterns. The printed silver grids exhibit suitable optical, electrical, and Joule-heating performances, enabling their application in transparent heaters. Our technique has the potential to extend the existing 2D micro/nanofluidic liquid-mediated patterning approach to three-dimensional (3D) control of liquid-air interfaces for low-cost all-liquid-processed functional 3D optoelectronics in the future.

Review of microfluidic approaches for fabricating intelligent fiber devices: importance of shape characteristics

Shape characteristics, which include the physical dimensions (scale), apparent morphology, surface features, and structure, are essential factors of fibrous materials and determine many of their properties. Microfluidic technologies have recently been proposed as an approach for producing one-dimensional (1D) fibers with controllable shape characteristics and particle alignment, which impart specific functionality to the fiber. Moreover, superfine 1D fibers with a high surface area and ordered structure have many potential applications as they can be directly braided or woven into textiles, clothes, and tissues with two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) structures. Previous reviews of microfluidic spinning have not focus on the importance of the shape characteristic on fiber performance and their use in intelligent fiber design. Here, the latest achievements in microfluidic approaches for fiber-device fabrication are reviewed considering the underlying preparation principles, shape characteristics, and functionalization of the fibers. Additionally, intelligent fiber devices with shapes tailored by microfluidic approaches are discussed, including 1D sensors and actuators, luminous fibers, and devices for encoding, energy harvesting, water collection, and tissue engineering applications. Finally, recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives of the microfluidic approaches for fiber device fabrication are discussed.

Hypersound-Assisted Size Sorting of Microparticles on Inkjet-Patterned Protein Films

Hydrodynamic approaches are important for biomedical diagnostics, chemical analysis, and a broad range of industrial applications. Size-based separation and sorting is an important tool for these applications. We report the integration of hypersound technology with patterned protein films to provide efficient sorting of microparticles based on particle charge and size. We employed a hypersonic resonator for the acoustic streaming of the fluidic system to generate microvortices that exert drag forces on the objects on the surface that are dictated by their radius of curvature. We demonstrate a size-based sorting of anionic silica particles using protein patterns and gradients fabricated using attractive cationic and repulsive anionic proteins.

Size-Controlled Patterning of Single-Crystalline Perovskite Arrays toward a Tunable High-Performance Microlaser

Single-crystalline halide perovskites with regular morphology are of great significance for laser applications because they can be used to fabricate a natural whispering-gallery-mode resonator. Although enormous efforts have been put to synthesize single-crystalline perovskites, controlling the lateral size and thickness of the crystal, particularly at the nanoscale, is still challenging. Here, we report a facile and high-throughput strategy to selectively one-step create micro/nanoscale size-controlled all-inorganic perovskite single-crystal arrays by surface-tension-confined evaporative assembly. Our method can be used to easily tune the single crystal size and selectively position the single crystal, with versatility in fabricating perovskite single-crystal arrays in a wafer scale. When the patterned size increases from 2 to 25 μm, the width of the CsPbClBr₂ perovskite microplates increased from 150 nm to 4.2 μm. Fixing the width of the microplates at 1.6 μm, with the increase of the sliding speed from 50 to 250 mm/min, we could significantly control the thicknesses from 270 to 430 nm. Additionally, our present study provides a characterization of lasers based on different three-dimensional structures, confirming their width-dependent lasing mode and thickness-dependent lasing threshold characteristic, which is beneficial for the tunability of a high-performance microlaser.

Controlled open-cell two-dimensional liquid foam generation for micro- and nanoscale patterning of materials

Liquid foam consists of liquid film networks. The films can be thinned to the nanoscale via evaporation and have potential in bottom-up material structuring applications. However, their use has been limited due to their dynamic fluidity, complex topological changes, and physical characteristics of the closed system. Here, we present a simple and versatile microfluidic approach for controlling two-dimensional liquid foam, designing not only evaporative microholes for directed drainage to generate desired film networks without topological changes for the first time, but also microposts to pin the generated films at set positions. Patterning materials in liquid is achievable using the thin films as nanoscale molds, which has additional potential through repeatable patterning on a substrate and combination with a lithographic technique. By enabling direct-writable multi-integrated patterning of various heterogeneous materials in two-dimensional or three-dimensional networked nanostructures, this technique provides novel means of nanofabrication superior to both lithographic and bottom-up state-of-the-art techniques.
