Spin-Related Electron Transfer and Orbital Interactions in Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Interpretable Data-Driven Descriptors for Establishing the Structure-Activity Relationship of Metal-Organic Frameworks Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The development of readily accessible and interpretable descriptors is pivotal yet challenging in the rational design of metal-organic framework (MOF) catalysts. This study presents a straightforward and physically interpretable activity descriptor for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), derived from a dataset of bimetallic Ni-based MOFs. Through an artificial-intelligence (AI) data-mining subgroup discovery (SGD) approach, a combination of the d-band center and number of missing electrons in eg states of Ni, as well as the first ionization energy and number of electrons in eg states of the substituents, is revealed as a gene of a superior OER catalyst. The found descriptor, obtained from the AI analysis of a dataset of MOFs containing 3-5d transition metals and 13 organic linkers, has been demonstrated to facilitate in-depth understanding of structure-activity relationship at the molecular orbital level. The descriptor is validated experimentally for 11 Ni-based MOFs. Combining SGD with physical insights and experimental verification, our work offers a highly efficient approach for screening MOF-based OER catalysts, simultaneously providing comprehensive understanding of the catalytic mechanism.

Quantum fundaments of catalysis: true electronic potential energy

Catalysis is a quantum phenomenon enthalpically driven by electronic correlations with many-particle effects in all of its branches, including electro-photo-catalysis and electron transfer. This means that only probability amplitudes provide a complete relationship between the state of catalysis and observations. Thus, in any atomic system material), competing space-time electronic interactions coexist to define its (related) properties such as stability, (super)conductivity, magnetism (spin-orbital ordering), chemisorption and catalysis. Catalysts, reactants, and chemisorbed and transition states have the possibility of optimizing quantum correlations to improve reaction kinetics. Active sites with closed-shell orbital configurations share a maximum number of spin-paired electrons, mainly optimizing coulombic attractions and covalency and defining weakly correlated closed-shell (WCCS) structures. However, in compositions with open-shell orbital configurations, at least, quantum spin exchange interactions (QSEIopenshells) arise, stabilising unpaired electrons in less covalent bonds and differentiating non-weakly (or strongly) correlated open-shell (NWCOS) systems. In NWCOS catalysts, electronic ground states can have bonds with diverse and rival spin-orbital orderings as well as ferro-, ferri- and multiple antiferro-magnetic textures, which deeply define their activities. Particularly in inter-atomic ferromagnetic (FM) bonds, the increase in relevance of non-classical quantum potentials can significantly optimize chemisorption energies, transition states (TSs), activation energies (overpotential) and spin-dependent electron transfer (conductivity), overall implying the need for explaining the thermodynamic and kinetic origin of catalysis from its true quantum electronic energy. To do so, we use the connection between the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and Virial theorem in the treatment of electronic kinetic and potential energies. Thus, the exact fundamental interactions that decompose TSs appear. The possibility of increasing the stabilization of TSs, due to quantum correlations on NWCO catalysts, opens the possibility of simultaneously reducing chemisorption enthalpies and activation barriers of reaction mechanisms, which implies the anticipation and explanation of positive deviations from the Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi principle.

Spin Symmetry Breaking-Induced Hubbard Gap Near-Closure in N-Coordinated MnO2 for Enhanced Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery Performance

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs), however, their performance is hindered by a substantial Hubbard gap, which limits electron transfer and battery cyclability. Addressing this, we introduce a heteroatom coordination approach, using triethanolamine to induce axial N coordination on Mn centers in MnO2, yielding N-coordinated MnO2 (TEAMO). This approach leverages the change of electronegativity disparity between Mn and ligands (O and N) to disrupt spin symmetry and augment spin polarization. This enhancement leads to the closure of the Hubbard gap, primarily driven by the intensified occupancy of the Mn eg orbitals. The resultant TEAMO exhibit a significant increase in storage capacity, reaching 351 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. Our findings suggest a viable strategy for optimizing the electronic structure of TMO cathodes, enhancing the potential of ZIBs in energy storage technology.

Half-metallization Atom-Fingerprints Achieved at Ultrafast Oxygen-Evaporated Pyrochlores for Acidic Water Oxidation

The stability and catalytic activity of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are strongly determined by the coordination states and spatial symmetry among metal sites at catalysts. Herein, an ultrafast oxygen evaporation technology to rapidly soften the intrinsic covalent bonds using ultrahigh electrical pulses is suggested, in which prospective charged excited states at this extreme avalanche condition can generate a strong electron-phonon coupling to rapidly evaporate some coordinated oxygen (O) atoms, finally leading to a controllable half-metallization feature. Simultaneously, the relative metal (M) site arrays can be orderly locked to delineate some intriguing atom-fingerprints at pyrochlore catalysts, where the coexistence of metallic bonds (M─M) and covalent bonds (M─O) at this symmetry-breaking configuration can partially restrain crystal field effect to generate a particular high-spin occupied state. This half-metallization catalyst can effectively optimize the spin-related reaction kinetics in acidic OER, giving rise to 10.3 times (at 188 mV overpotential) reactive activity than pristine pyrochlores. This work provides a new understanding of half-metallization atom-fingerprints at catalyst surfaces to accelerate acidic water oxidation.

Unraveling Stoichiometry Effect in Nickel-Tungsten Alloys for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis in Alkaline Electrolytes

Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells provide the possibility to use platinum group metal-free catalysts, but the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) suffers from sluggish kinetics and its source is still debated. Here, over nickel-tungsten (Ni-W) alloy catalysts, we show that the Ni : W ratio greatly governs the HOR performance in alkaline electrolyte. Experimental and theoretical studies unravel that alloying with W can tune the unpaired electrons in Ni, tailoring the potential of zero charge and the catalytic surface to favor hydroxyl adsorption (OHad). The OHad species coordinately interact with potassium (K+) ions, which break the K+ solvation sheath to leave free water molecules, yielding an improved connectivity of hydrogen-bond networks. Consequently, the optimal Ni17W3 alloy exhibits alkaline HOR activity superior to the state-of-the-art platinum on carbon (Pt/C) catalyst and operates steadily with negligible decay after 10,000 cycles. Our findings offer new understandings of alloyed HOR catalysts and will guide rational design of next-generation catalysts for fuel cells.

Magnetic Field-induced Disordered Phase of Spinel Oxides for High Battery Performance

The disordered phase of spinel LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 (LNMO) is more appealing as high-voltage cathode due to its superior electrochemical performance compared to its ordered counterpart. Various methods are developed to induce a phase transition. However, the resulting materials often suffer from capacity degradation due to the adverse influence of accompanying Mn3+ ions. This study presents the utilization of local magnetic fields generated by a magnetic Fe3O4 shell to induce a disordered phase transition in LNMO at lower temperature, transitioning it from an order state without significantly increasing the Mn3+ content. The pivotal role played by the local magnetic fields is evidenced through comparisons with samples with nonmagnetic Al2O3 shell, samples subjected to sole heat treatment, and samples heat-treated within magnetic fields. The key finding is that magnetic fields can initiate a radical pair mechanism, enabling the induction of order-disorder phase transition even at lower temperatures. The disordered spinal LNMO with a magnetic Fe3O4 shell exhibits excellent cycling stability and kinetic properties in electrochemical characterization as a result. This innovation not only unravels the intricate interplay between the disordered phase and Mn3+ content in the cathode spinel but also pioneers the use of magnetic field effects for manipulating material phases.

Spin Effect to Regulate the Electronic Structure of Ir─Fe Aerogels for Efficient Acidic Water Oxidation

"Spin" has been recently reported as an important degree of electronic freedom to promote catalysis, yet how it influences electronic structure remains unexplored. This work reports the spin-induced orbital hybridization in Ir─Fe bimetallic aerogels, where the electronic structure of Ir sites is effectively regulated by tuning the spin property of Fe atoms. The spin-optimized electronic structure boosts oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis in acidic media, resulting in a largely improved catalytic performance with an overpotential of as low as 236 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the gelation kinetics for the aerogel synthesis is improved by an order of magnitude based on the introduction of a magnetic field. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the increased magnetic moment of Fe (3d orbital) changes the d-band structure (i.e., the d-band center and bandwidth) of Ir (5d orbital) via orbital hybridization, resulting in optimized binding of reaction intermediates. This strategy builds the bridge between the electron spin theory with the d-band theory and provides a new way for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts by using spin-induced orbital interaction.

Recent Advancements on Spin Engineering Strategies for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a widely employed half-electrode reaction in oxygen electrochemistry, in applications such as hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, ammonia synthesis, and electrocatalytic hydrogenation. Unfortunately, its slow kinetics limits the commercialization of such applications. It is therefore highly imperative to develop highly robust electrocatalysts with high activity, long-term durability, and low noble-metal contents. Previously intensive efforts have been made to introduce the advancements on developing non-precious transition metal electrocatalysts and their OER mechanisms. Electronic structure tuning is one of the most effective and interesting ways to boost OER activity and spin angular momentum is an intrinsic property of the electron. Therefore, modulation on the spin states and the magnetic properties of the electrocatalyst enables the changes on energy associated with interacting electron clouds with radical absorbance, affecting the OER activity and stability. Given that few review efforts have been made on this topic, in this review, the-state-of-the-art research progress on spin-dependent effects in OER will be briefed. Spin engineering strategies, such as strain, crystal surface engineering, crystal doping, etc., will be introduced. The related mechanism for spin manipulation to boost OER activity will also be discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of spin catalysis are presented. This review aims to highlight the significance of spin engineering in breaking the bottleneck of electrocatalysis and promoting the practical application of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Enhanced Oxygen Evolution and Zinc-Air Battery Performance via Electronic Spin Modulation in Heterostructured Catalysts

Beyond optimizing electronic energy levels, the modulation of the electronic spin configuration is an effective strategy, often overlooked, to boost activity and selectivity in a range of catalytic reactions, including the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This electronic spin modulation is frequently accomplished using external magnetic fields, which makes it impractical for real applications. Herein, spin modulation is achieved by engineering Ni/MnFe2O4 heterojunctions, whose surface is reconstructed into NiOOH/MnFeOOH during the OER. NiOOH/MnFeOOH shows a high spin state of Ni, which regulates the OH- and O2 adsorption energy and enables spin alignment of oxygen intermediates. As a result, NiOOH/MnFeOOH electrocatalysts provide excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Besides, rechargeable zinc-air batteries based on Ni/MnFe2O4 show a high open circuit potential of 1.56 V and excellent stability for more than 1000 cycles. This outstanding performance is rationalized using density functional theory calculations, which show that the optimal spin state of both Ni active sites and oxygen intermediates facilitates spin-selected charge transport, optimizes the reaction kinetics, and decreases the energy barrier to the evolution of oxygen. This study provides valuable insight into spin polarization modulation by heterojunctions enabling the design of next-generation OER catalysts with boosted performance.

2D MXene/MBene Superlattice with Narrow Bandgap as Superior Electrocatalyst for High-Performance Lithium-Oxygen Battery

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery with large theoretical energy density (≈3500 Wh kg-1) is one of the most promising energy storage and conversion systems. However, the slow kinetics of oxygen electrode reactions inhibit the practical application of Li-O2 battery. Thus, designing efficient electrocatalysts is crucial to improve battery performance. Here, Ti3C2 MXene/Mo4/3B2-x MBene superlattice is fabricated its electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen redox reactions in Li-O2 battery is studied. It is found that the built-in electric field formed by a large work function difference between Ti3C2 and Mo4/3B2-x will power the charge transfer at the interface from titanium (Ti) site in Ti3C2 to molybdenum (Mo) site in Mo4/3B2-x. This charge transfer increases the electron density in 4d orbital of Mo site and decreases the d-band center of Mo site, thus optimizing the adsorption of intermediate product LiO2 at Mo site and accelerating the kinetics of oxygen electrode reactions. Meanwhile, the formed film-like discharge products (Li2O2) improve the contact with electrode and facilitate the decomposition of Li2O2. Based on the above advantages, the Ti3C2 MXene/Mo4/3B2-x MBene superlattice-based Li-O2 battery exhibits large discharge specific capacity (17 167 mAh g-1), low overpotential (1.16 V), and superior cycling performance (475 cycles).

Ultrafine Nanoclusters Unlocked 3d-4f Electronic Ladders for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The vast extensional planes of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are recognized as desirable ground for electrocatalytic reactions. However, they tend to exhibit catalytic inertia due to their surface-ordered coordination configurations. Herein, an in situ autoxidation strategy enables high-density grafting of ultrafine CeO2 nanoclusters on 2D Co(OH)2. Affluent active units were activated at the inert interface of Co(OH)2 via the formation of Co-O-Ce units. The optimized catalyst exhibits oxygen evolution reaction activity with an overpotential of 83 mV lower than that of Co(OH)2 at 10 mA cm-2. The cascade orbital coupling between Co (3d) and Ce (4f) in Co-O-Ce units drives electron transfer by unlocking a "d-f electron ladder". Meanwhile, the bond-order theorem analyses and the d-band center show that the occupancy of Co-3d-eg is optimized to balance the adsorption-desorption process of active sites to the key reaction intermediate *OOH, thereby making it easier to release oxygen. This work will drive the development of wider area electron modulation methods and provide guidance for the surface engineering of 2D nanomaterials.

The spin polarization strategy regulates heterogeneous catalytic activity performance: from fundamentals to applications

In recent years, there has been significant attention towards the development of catalysts that exhibit superior performance and environmentally friendly attributes. This surge in interest is driven by the growing demands for energy utilization and storage as well as environmental preservation. Spin polarization plays a crucial role in catalyst design, comprehension of catalytic mechanisms, and reaction control, offering novel insights for the design of highly efficient catalysts. However, there are still some significant research gaps in the current study of spin catalysis. Therefore, it is urgent to understand how spin polarization impacts catalytic reactions to develop superior performance catalysts. Herein, we present a comprehensive summary of the application of spin polarization in catalysis. Firstly, we summarize the fundamental mechanism of spin polarization in catalytic reactions from two aspects of kinetics and thermodynamics. Additionally, we review the regulation mechanism of spin polarization in various catalytic applications and several approaches to modulate spin polarization. Moreover, we discuss the future development of spin polarization in catalysis and propose several potential avenues for further progress. We aim to improve current catalytic systems through implementing a novel and distinctive spin engineering strategy.

Regulating Spin Density using TEMPOL Molecules for Enhanced CO2-to-Ethylene Conversion by HKUST-1 Framework Derived Electrocatalysts

The selectivity of multicarbon products in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) depends on the spin alignment of neighboring active sites, which requires a spin catalyst that facilitates electron transfer with antiparallel spins for enhanced C-C coupling. Here, we design a radical-contained spin catalyst (TEMPOL@HKUST-1) to enhance CO2-to-ethylene conversion, in which spin-disordered (SDO) and spin-ordered (SO) phases co-exist to construct an asymmetric spin configuration of neighboring active sites. The replacement of axially coordinated H2O molecules with TEMPOL radicals introduces spin-spin interactions among the Cu(II) centers to form localized SO phases within the original H2O-mediated SDO phases. Therefore, TEMPOL@HKUST-1 derived catalyst exhibited an approximately two-fold enhancement in ethylene selectivity during the CO2RR at -1.8 V versus Ag/AgCl compared to pristine HKUST-1. In situ ATR-SEIRAS spectra indicate that the spin configuration at asymmetric SO/SDO sites significantly reduces the kinetic barrier for *CO intermediate dimerization toward the ethylene product. The performance of the spin catalyst is further improved by spin alignment under a magnetic field, resulting in a maximum ethylene selectivity of more than 50 %. The exploration of the spin-polarized kinetics of the CO2RR provides a promising path for the development of novel spin electrocatalysts with superior performance.

Enhancing the electronic structure of Ni-based electrocatalysts through N element substitution for the hydrogen evolution reaction

The weak orbital coupling between Ni3N and H2O, caused by its interstitial structure and attenuated Ni-N interaction, is attributed to the high unoccupied d orbital energy of Ni3N. Consequently, the kinetics for water dissociation in the HER are slow. In this study, we effectively lowered the energy state of vacant d orbitals in Ni3N, which resulted in an exceptionally efficient HER. The as-synthesized Ni3N catalyst demonstrates an overpotential of 135 mV when subjected to a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The refined structural characterization suggests that the introduction of oxygen results in a reduction in electron densities surrounding the Ni sites. Furthermore, DFT calculations provide additional evidence that the electrocatalyst of Ni3N generates a greater number of lowest unoccupied orbitals (LUMOs) and improved alignment, thereby enhancing the adsorption and splitting of water. The notion of orbital-regulated electronic levels on Ni sites introduces a distinctive methodology for the systematic development of catalysts used in hydrogen evolution and other applications.

Amorphous P-CoOX Promotes the Formation of Hypervalent Ni Species in NiFe LDHs by Amorphous/Crystalline Interfaces for Excellent Catalytic Performance of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Water electrolysis has become an attractive hydrogen production method. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a bottleneck of water splitting as its four-electron transfer procedure presents sluggish reaction kinetics. Designing composite catalysts with high performance for efficient OER still remains a huge challenge. Here, the P-doped cobalt oxide/NiFe layered double hydroxides (P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs) composite catalysts with amorphous/crystalline interfaces are successfully prepared for OER by hydrothermal-electrodeposition combined method. The results of electrochemical characterizations, operando Raman spectra, and DFT theoretical calculations have demonstrated the electrons in the P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs heterointerfaces are easily transferred from Ni2+ to Co3+ because that the amorphous configuration of P-CoOX can well induce Ni-O-Co orbital coupling. The electron transfer of Ni2+ to the surrounding Fe3+ and Co3+ will lead to the unoccupied eg orbitals of Ni3+ that can promote water dissociation and accelerate *OOH migration to improve OER catalytic performance. The optimized P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs exhibit superior catalytic performance for OER with a very low overpotential of 265 mV at 300 mA cm-2 and excellent long-term stability of 500 h with almost no attenuation at 100 mA cm-2. This work will provide a new method to design high-performance NiFe LDHs-based catalysts for OER.

Spin-polarized p-block antimony/bismuth single-atom catalysts on defect-free rutile TiO2(110) substrate for highly efficient CO oxidation

Developing high-loading spin-polarized p-block-element-based single-atom catalysts (p-SACs) upon defect-free substrates for various chemical reactions wherein spin selection matters is generally considered a formidable challenge because of the difficulty of creating high densities of underpinning stable defects and the delocalized electronic features of p-block elements. Here our first-principles calculations establish that the defect-free rutile TiO2(110) wide-bandgap semiconducting anchoring support can stabilize and localize the wavefunctions of p-block metal elements (Sb and Bi) via strong ionic bonding, forming spin-polarized p-SACs. Cooperated by the underlying d-block Ti atoms via a delicate spin donation-back-donation mechanism, the p-block single-atom reactive center Sb(Bi) exhibits excellent catalysis for spin-triplet O2 activation and CO oxidation in alignment with Wigner's spin selection rule, with a low rate-limiting reaction barrier of ∼0.6 eV. This work is crucial in establishing high-loading reactive centers of high-performance p-SACs for various important physical processes and chemical reactions, especially wherein the spin degree of freedom matters, i.e., spin catalysis.

Structural and Electronic Factors behind the Electrochemical Stability of 3D-Metal Tungstates under Oxygen Evolution Reaction Conditions

Transition metal tungstates (TMTs) possess a wolframite-like lattice structure and preferably form via an electrostatic interaction between a divalent transition metal cation (MII) and an oxyanion of tungsten ([WO4]2-). A unit cell of a TMT is primarily composed of two repeating units, [MO6]oh and [WO6]oh, which are held together via several M-μ2-O-W bridging links. The bond character (ionic or covalent) of this bridging unit determines the stability of the lattice and influences the electronic structure of the bulk TMT materials. Recently, TMTs have been successfully employed as an electrode material for various applications, including electrochemical water splitting. Despite the wide electrocatalytic applications of TMTs, the study of the structure-activity correlation and electronic factors responsible for in situ structural evolution to electroactive species during electrochemical reactions is still in its infancy. Herein, a series of TMTs, MIIWVIO4 (M = Mn/Fe/Co/Ni), have been prepared and employed as electrocatalysts to study the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions and to scrutinize the role of transition metals in controlling the energetics of the formation of electroactive species. Since the [WO6]oh unit is common in the TMTs considered, the variation of the central atom of the corresponding [MO6]oh unit plays an intriguing role in controlling the electronic structure and stability of the lattice under anodic potential. Under the OER conditions, a potential-dependent structural transformation of MWO4 is noticed, where MnWO4 appears to be the most labile, whereas NiWO4 is stable up to a high anodic potential of ∼1.68 V (vs RHE). Potential-dependent hydrolytic [WO4]2- dissolution to form MOx active species, traced by in situ Raman and various spectro-/microscopic analyses, can directly be related to the electronic factors of the lattice, viz., crystal field splitting energy (CFSE) of MII in [MO6]oh, formation enthalpy (ΔHf), decomposition enthalpy (ΔHd), and Madelung factor associated with the MWO4 ionic lattice. Additionally, the magnitude of the Löwdin and Bader charges on M of the M-μ2-O-W bond is directly related to the degree of ionicity or covalency in the MWO4 lattice, which indirectly influences the electronic structure and activity. The experimental results substantiated by the computational study explain the electrochemical activity of the TMTs with the help of various structural and electronic factors and bonding interactions in the lattice, which has never been realized. Therefore, the study presented here can be taken as a general guideline to correlate the reactivity to the structure of the inorganic materials.

Engineering Spatially Adjacent Redox Sites with Synergistic Spin Polarization Effect to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Methanation

The integration of oxidation and reduction half-reactions to amplify their synergy presents a considerable challenge in CO2 photoconversion. Addressing this challenge requires the construction of spatially adjacent redox sites while suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This study introduces an innovative approach that utilizes spatial synergy to enable synergistic redox reactions within atomic proximity and employs spin polarization to inhibit charge recombination. We incorporate Mn into Co3O4 as a catalyst, in which Mn sites tend to enrich holes as water activation sites, while adjacent Co sites preferentially capture electrons to activate CO2, forming a spatial synergy. The direct H transfer from H2O at Mn sites facilitates the formation of *COOH on adjacent Co sites with remarkably favorable thermodynamic energy. Notably, the incorporation of Mn induces spin polarization in the system, significantly suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charges at redox sites. This effect is further enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. By synergizing spatial synergy and spin polarization, Mn/Co3O4 exhibits a CH4 production rate of 23.4 μmol g-1 h-1 from CO2 photoreduction, showcasing a 28.8 times enhancement over Co3O4. This study first introduces spin polarization to address charge recombination issues at spatially adjacent redox sites, offering novel insights for synergistic redox photocatalytic systems.

Unlocking Spin Gates of Transition Metal Oxides via Strain Stimuli to Augment Potassium Ion Storage

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are key in electrochemical energy storage, offering cost-effectiveness and a broad potential window. However, their full potential is limited by poor understanding of their slow reaction kinetics and stability issues. This study diverges from conventional complex nano-structuring, concentrating instead on spin-related charge transfer and orbital interactions to enhance the reaction dynamics and stability of TMOs during energy storage processes. We successfully reconfigured the orbital degeneracy and spin-dependent electronic occupancy by disrupting the symmetry of magnetic cobalt (Co) sites through straightforward strain stimuli. The key to this approach lies in the unfilled Co 3d shell, which serves as a spin-dependent regulator for carrier transfer and orbital interactions within the reaction. We observed that the opening of these 'spin gates' occurs during a transition from a symmetric low-spin state to an asymmetric high-spin state, resulting in enhanced reaction kinetics and maintained structural stability. Specifically, the spin-rearranged Al-Co3O4 exhibited a specific capacitance of 1371 F g-1, which is 38 % higher than that of unaltered Co3O4. These results not only shed light on the spin effects in magnetic TMOs but also establish a new paradigm for designing electrochemical energy storage materials with improved efficiency.

Catalytically Active Carbon for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Energy Conversion: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

The shortage and unevenness of fossil energy sources are affecting the development and progress of human civilization. The technology of efficiently converting material resources into energy for utilization and storage is attracting the attention of researchers. Environmentally friendly biomass materials are a treasure to drive the development of new-generation energy sources. Electrochemical theory is used to efficiently convert the chemical energy of chemical substances into electrical energy. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of green and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although many reviews have been reported around the application of biomass-derived catalytically active carbon (CAC) catalysts in ORR, these reviews have only selected a single/partial topic (including synthesis and preparation of catalysts from different sources, structural optimization, or performance enhancement methods based on CAC catalysts, and application of biomass-derived CACs) for discussion. There is no review that systematically addresses the latest progress in the synthesis, performance enhancement, and applications related to biomass-derived CAC-based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts synchronously. This review fills the gap by providing a timely and comprehensive review and summary from the following sections: the exposition of the basic catalytic principles of ORR, the summary of the chemical composition and structural properties of various types of biomass, the analysis of traditional and the latest popular biomass-derived CAC synthesis methods and optimization strategies, and the summary of the practical applications of biomass-derived CAC-based oxidative reduction electrocatalysts. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the latest advances to provide research directions and design ideas for the development of catalyst synthesis/optimization and contributes to the industrialization of biomass-derived CAC electrocatalysis and electric energy storage.

Anion Structure Regulation of Cobalt Silicate Hydroxide Endowing Boosted Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal silicates (TMSs) are attempted for the electrocatalyst of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their special layered structure in recent years. However, defects such as low theoretical activity and conductivity limit their application. Researchers always prefer to composite TMSs with other functional materials to make up for their deficiency, but rarely focus on the effect of intrinsic structure adjustment on their catalytic activity, especially anion structure regulation. Herein, applying the method of interference hydrolysis and vacancy reserve, new silicate vacancies (anionic regulation) are introduced in cobalt silicate hydroxide (CoSi), named SV-CoSi, to enlarge the number and enhance the activity of catalytic sites. The overpotential of SV-CoSi declines to 301 mV at 10 mA cm-2 compared to 438 mV of CoSi. Source of such improvement is verified to be not only the increase of active sites, but also the positive effect on the intrinsic activity due to the enhancement of cobalt-oxygen covalence with the variation of anion structure by density functional theory (DFT) method. This work demonstrates that the feasible intrinsic anion structure regulation can improve OER performance of TMSs and provides an effective idea for the development of non-noble metal catalyst for OER.

Constructing FeNiPt@C Trifunctional Catalyst by High Spin-Induced Water Oxidation Activity for Zn-Air Battery and Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer

Developing cost-efficient trifunctional catalysts capable of facilitating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is essential for the progression of energy devices. Engineering these catalysts to optimize their active sites and integrate them into a cohesive system presents a significant challenge. This study introduces a nanoflower (NFs)-like carbon-encapsulated FeNiPt nanoalloy catalyst (FeNiPt@C NFs), synthesized by substituting Co2+ ions with high-spin Fe2+ ions in Hofmann-type metal-organic framework, followed by carbonization and pickling processes. The FeNiPt@C NFs catalyst, characterized by its nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated metal alloy structure and phase-segregated FeNiPt alloy with slight surface oxidization, exhibits excellent trifunctional catalytic performance. This is evidenced by its activities in HER (-25 mV at 10 mA cm-2), ORR (half-wave potential of 0.93 V), and OER (294 mV at 10 mA cm-2), with the enhanced water oxidation activity attributed to the high-spin state of the Fe element. Consequently, the Zn-air battery and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer assembled by FeNiPt@C NFs catalyst demonstrate remarkable power density (168 mW cm-2) and industrial-scale current density (698 mA cm-2 at 1.85 V), respectively. This innovative integration of multifunctional catalytic sites paves the way for the advancement of sustainable energy systems.

Spin-Magnetic Effect of d-π Conjugation Polymer Enhanced O-H Cleavage in Water Oxidation

A deep understanding of the mechanism for the spin-magnetic effect on O-H cleavage is crucial for the development of new catalysts for water oxidation. Herein, we designed and synthesized the crystalline Fe-DABDT and Co-DABDT (DABDT = 2,5-diaminobenzene-1,4-dithiol) and optimized an effective magnetic moment to explore the role of the spin-magnetic effect in the regulation of water oxidation activity. It can be found that the OER activity of the catalyst is positively correlated with its effective magnetic moment. Under the external magnetic field, Fe-DABDT with more spin single electrons has a stronger spin-magnetic response to water oxidation than Fe/Co-DABDT and Co-DABDT. The increase in OER current of Fe-DABDT is nearly 2 times higher than that of Co-DABDT. Experimental and density functional theory studies show that magnetized Fe sites could realize nucleophilic reaction, accelerate the polarization of electron spin states, and promote the polar decomposition of O-H and the formation of the O-O bond. This study provides mechanistic insight into the spin-magnetic effect of oxygen evolution reaction and further understanding of the spin origin of catalytic activity, which is expected to improve the energy efficiency of hydrogen production.

From Charge to Spin: An In-Depth Exploration of Electron Transfer in Energy Electrocatalysis

Catalytic materials play crucial roles in various energy-related processes, ranging from large-scale chemical production to advancements in renewable energy technologies. Despite a century of dedicated research, major enduring challenges associated with enhancing catalyst efficiency and durability, particularly in green energy-related electrochemical reactions, remain. Focusing only on either the crystal structure or electronic structure of a catalyst is deemed insufficient to break the linear scaling relationship (LSR), which is the golden rule for the design of advanced catalysts. The discourse in this review intricately outlines the essence of heterogeneous catalysis reactions by highlighting the vital roles played by electron properties. The physical and electrochemical properties of electron charge and spin that govern catalysis efficiencies are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the pronounced influence of external fields in perturbing the LSR, underscoring the vital role that electron spin plays in advancing high-performance catalyst design. The review culminates by proffering insights into the potential applications of spin catalysis, concluding with a discussion of extant challenges and inherent limitations.

Tailoring d-band center of high-valent metal-oxo species for pollutant removal via complete polymerization

Polymerization-driven removal of pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) offers a sustainable way for the simultaneous achievement of contamination abatement and resource recovery, supporting a low-carbon water purification approach. However, regulating such a process remains a great challenge due to the insufficient microscopic understanding of electronic structure-dependent reaction mechanisms. Herein, this work probes the origin of catalytic pollutant polymerization using a series of transition metal (Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe) single-atom catalysts and identifies the d-band center of active site as the key driver for polymerization transfer of pollutants. The high-valent metal-oxo species, produced via peroxymonosulfate activation, are found to trigger the pollutant removal via polymerization transfer. Phenoxyl radicals, identified by the innovative spin-trapping and quenching approaches, act as the key intermediate in the polymerization reactions. More importantly, the oxidation capacity of high-valent metal-oxo species can be facilely tuned by regulating their binding strength for peroxymonosulfate through d-band center modulation. A 100% polymerization transfer ratio is achieved by lowering the d-band center. This work presents a paradigm to dynamically modulate the electronic structure of high-valent metal-oxo species and optimize pollutant removal from wastewater via polymerization.

What Makes On-Chip Microdevices Stand Out in Electrocatalysis?

Clean and sustainable energy conversion and storage through electrochemistry shows great promise as an alternative to traditional fuel or fossil-consumption energy systems. With regards to practical and high-efficient electrochemistry application, the rational design of active sites and the accurate description of mechanism remain a challenge. Toward this end, in this Perspective, a unique on-chip micro/nano device coupling nanofabrication and low-dimensional electrochemical materials is presented, in which material structure analysis, field-effect regulation, in situ monitoring, and simulation modeling are highlighted. The critical mechanisms that influence electrochemical response are discussed, and how on-chip micro/nano device distinguishes itself is emphasized. The key challenges and opportunities of on-chip electrochemical platforms are also provided through the Perspective.

Engineering High-Spin State Cobalt Cations in Sulfide Spinel for Enhancing Water Oxidation

The spin states of active sites have a significant impact on the adsorption/desorption ability of the reaction intermediates during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Sulfide spinel is not generally considered a highly efficient OER catalyst owing to the low spin state of Co3+ and the lack of unpaired electrons available for adsorption of reaction intermediates. Herein, it is proposed a novel Nd-evoked valence electronic adjustment strategy to engineer the spin state of Co ions. The unique f-p-d orbital electronic coupling effect stimulates the rearrangement of Co d orbital electrons and increases the eg electron filling to achieve high-spin state Co ions, which promotes charge transport by propagating a spin channel and generates a high number of active sites for intermediate adsorption. The optimized CuCo1.75 Nd0.25 S4 catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic properties with a low overpotential of 320 mV at 500 mA cm-2 and a 48 h stability at 300 mA cm-2 . In situ synchrotron radiation infrared spectra confirm the quick accumulation of key *OOH and *O intermediates. This work deepens the comprehensive understanding of the relationship between OER activity and spin configurations of Co ions and offers a new design strategy for spinel compound catalysts.

Cobalt-Doping Induced Formation of Five-Coordinated Nickel Selenide for Enhanced Ethanol Assisted Overall Water Splitting

To overcome the low efficiency of overall water splitting, highly effective and stable catalysts are in urgent need, especially for the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this case, nickel selenides appear as good candidates to catalyze OER and other substitutable anodic reactions due to their high electronic conductivity and easily tunable electronic structure to meet the optimized adsorption ability. Herein, an interesting phase transition from the hexagonal phase of NiSe (H-NiSe) to the rhombohedral phase of NiSe (R-NiSe) induced by the doping of cobalt atoms is reported. The five-coordinated R-NiSe is found to grow adjacent to the six-coordinated H-NiSe, resulting in the formation of the H-NiSe/R-NiSe heterostructure. Further characterizations and calculations prove the reduced splitting energy for R-NiSe and thus the less occupancy in the t2g orbits, which can facilitate the electron transfer process. As a result, the Co2 -NiSe/NF shows a satisfying catalytic performance toward OER, hydrogen evolution reaction, and (hybrid) overall water splitting. This work proves that trace amounts of Co doping can induce the phase transition from H-NiSe to R-NiSe. The formation of less-coordinated species can reduce the t2g occupancy and thus enhance the catalytic performance, which might guide rational material design.

Laser-Ironing Induced Capping Layer on Co-ZIF-L Promoting In Situ Surface Modification to High-Spin Oxide-Carbon Hybrids on the "Real Catalyst" for High OER Activity and Stability

Enhancing electrocatalytic performance through structural and compositional engineering attracts considerable attention. However, most materials only function as pre-catalysts and convert into "real catalysts" during electrochemical reactions. Such transition involves dramatic structural and compositional changes and disrupts their designed properties. Herein, for the first time, a laser-ironing (LI) approach capable of in-situ forming a laser-ironing capping layer (LICL) on the Co-ZIF-L flakes is developed. During the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, the LICL sustains the leaf-like morphology and promotes the formation of OER-active Co3 O4 nanoclusters with the highest activity and stability. In contrast, the pristine and conventional heat-treated Co-ZIF-Ls both collapse and transform to less active CoOOH. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations pinpoint the importance of the high spin (HS) states of Co ions and the narrowed band gap in Co3 O4 nanoclusters. They enhance the OER activity by promoting spin-selected electron transport, effectively lowering the energy barrier and realizing a spontaneous O2 -releasing step that is the potential determining step (pds) in CoOOH. This study presents an innovative approach for modulating both structural and compositional evolutions of electrocatalysts during the reaction, sustaining stability with high performance during dynamic electrochemical reactions, and providing new pathways for facile and high-precision surface microstructure control.

Bimetallic MXene with tailored vanadium d-band as highly efficient electrocatalyst for reversible lithium-oxygen battery

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery possesses high theoretical energy density of ∼ 3500 Wh kg-1, yet the sluggish kinetics of oxygen redox reactions hinder its practical application. Herein, TiVC bimetallic MXene solid solution is prepared as the efficient electrocatalyst for Li-O2 battery. The results of experiment and theoretical calculations reveal that through the formation of Ti-C-V bond in TiVC, electrons transfer from V site to Ti site enhances electron delocalization of V sites, which causes the upshift of d band center of V site and strengthens the adsorption of intermediate products (LiO2) on TiVC electrode surface. Due to the strong adsorption of intermediates, the film-like Li2O2 can be formed on TiVC electrode via the surface-adsorbed pathway, which ensures the full contact between the electrode and discharged product and thus facilitates the charge transfer between TiVC electrode and oxygen species during charge process. As a consequence, the TiVC based Li-O2 battery exhibits superior electrochemical performance including large discharge capacity (12780 mAh/g) and extended cycling stability (422 cycles) at the current density of 300 mA g-1.

Revealing the Orbital Interactions between Dissimilar Metal Sites during Oxygen Reduction Process

A FeCo/DA@NC catalyst with the well-defined FeCoN6 moiety is customized through a novel and ultrafast Joule heating technique. This catalyst demonstrates superior oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability in an alkaline environment. The power density and charge-discharge cycling of znic-air batteries driven by FeCo/DA@NC also surpass those of Pt/C catalyst. The source of the excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity of FeCo/DA@NC originates from the significantly changed charge environment and 3d orbital spin state. These not only improve the bonding strength between active sites and oxygen-containing intermediates, but also provide spare reaction sites for oxygen-containing intermediates. Moreover, various in situ detection techniques reveal that the rate-determining step in the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction is *O2 protonation. This work provides strong support for the precise design and rapid preparation of bimetallic catalysts and opens up new ideas for understanding orbital interactions during oxygen reduction reactions.

Highly Accessible Co-Nx Active Sites-Doped Carbon Framework with Uniformly Dispersed Cobalt Nanoparticles for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Alkaline and Neutral Electrolytes

Porous carbon materials with nitrogen-coordinated transition metal active sites have been widely regarded as appealing alternatives to replace noble metal catalysts in oxygen-based electrochemical reaction activities. However, improving the electrocatalytic activity of transition-metal-based catalysts remains a challenge for widespread application in renewable devices. Herein, we use a simple one-step pyrolysis method to construct a Co nanoparticles/Co-Nx-decorated carbon framework catalyst with a near-total external surface structure and uniform dispersion nanoparticles, which displays promising catalytic activity and superior stability for oxygen reduction reactions in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes, as evidenced by the positive shift of half-wave potential by 44 and 11 mV compared to 20% Pt/C. Excellent electrochemical performance originates from highly accessible Co nanoparticles/Co-Nx active sites at the external surface structure (this is, exposing active sites). The thus-assembled liquid zinc-air battery using the synthesized electrocatalyst as the cathode material delivers a maximum power density of 178 mW cm-2 with an open circuit potential of 1.48 V and long-term discharge stability over 150 h.

Manipulation of Electron Spins with Oxygen Vacancy on Amorphous/Crystalline Composite-Type Catalyst

By substituting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the anodic urea oxidation reaction (UOR), it not only reduces energy consumption for green hydrogen generation but also allows purification of urea-rich wastewater. Spin engineering of the d orbital and oxygen-containing adsorbates has been recognized as an effective pathway for enhancing the performance of electrocatalysts. In this work, we report the fabrication of a bifunctional electrocatalyst composed of amorphous RuO2-coated NiO ultrathin nanosheets (a-RuO2/NiO) with abundant amorphous/crystalline interfaces for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and UOR. Impressively, only 1.372 V of voltage is required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 over a urea electrolyzer. The increased oxygen vacancies in a-RuO2/NiO by incorporation of amorphous RuO2 enhance the total magnetization and entail numerous spin-polarized electrons during the reaction, which speeds up the UOR reaction kinetics. The density functional theory study reveals that the amorphous/crystalline interfaces promote charge-carrier transfer, and the tailored d-band center endows the optimized adsorption of oxygen-generated intermediates. This kind of oxygen vacancy induced spin-polarized electrons toward boosting HER and UOR kinetics and provides a reliable reference for exploration of advanced electrocatalysts.

Spin polarized Fe1-Ti pairs for highly efficient electroreduction nitrate to ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia offers an attractive solution to environmental sustainability and clean energy production but suffers from the sluggish *NO hydrogenation with the spin-state transitions. Herein, we report that the manipulation of oxygen vacancies can contrive spin-polarized Fe1-Ti pairs on monolithic titanium electrode that exhibits an attractive NH3 yield rate of 272,000 μg h-1 mgFe-1 and a high NH3 Faradic efficiency of 95.2% at -0.4 V vs. RHE, far superior to the counterpart with spin-depressed Fe1-Ti pairs (51000 μg h-1 mgFe-1) and the mostly reported electrocatalysts. The unpaired spin electrons of Fe and Ti atoms can effectively interact with the key intermediates, facilitating the *NO hydrogenation. Coupling a flow-through electrolyzer with a membrane-based NH3 recovery unit, the simultaneous nitrate reduction and NH3 recovery was realized. This work offers a pioneering strategy for manipulating spin polarization of electrocatalysts within pair sites for nitrate wastewater treatment.

Iron 3D-Orbital Configuration Dependent Electron Transfer for Efficient Fenton-Like Catalysis

Transition metals are excellent active sites to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water treatment, but the favorable electronic structures governing  reaction mechanism still remain elusive. Herein, the authors construct typical d-orbital configurations on iron octahedral (FeOh ) and tetrahedral (FeTd ) sites in spinel ZnFe2 O4 and FeAl2 O4 , respectively. ZnFe2 O4 (136.58 min-1 F-1 cm2 ) presented higher specific activity than FeAl2 O4 (97.47 min-1 F-1 cm2 ) for tetracycline removal by PMS activation. Considering orbital features of charge amount, spin state, and orbital arrangement by magnetic spectroscopic analysis, ZnFe2 O4 has a larger bond order to decompose PMS. Using this descriptor, high-spin FeOh is assumed to activate PMS mainly to produce nonradical reactive oxygen species (ROS) while high-spin FeTd prefers to induce radical species. This hypothesis is confirmed by the selective predominant ROS of 1 O2 on ZnFe2 O4 and O2 •- on FeAl2 O4 via quenching experiments. Electrochemical determinations reveal that FeOh has superior capability than FeTd for feasible valence transformation of iron cations and fast interfacial electron transfer. DFT calculations further suggest octahedral d-orbital configuration of ZnFe2 O4 is beneficial to enhancing Fe-O covalence for electron exchange. This work attempts to understand the d-orbital configuration-dependent PMS activation to design efficient catalysts.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Nanoarrays for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

The development of highly active and stable electrode materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the widespread application of electrochemical energy conversion systems. In recent years, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with self-supporting array structures have been extensively studied because of their high porosity, abundant metal sites, and flexible and adjustable structures. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in the design, preparation, and applications of MOF-based nanoarrays for the OER, beginning with the introduction of the architectural advantages of the nanoarrays and the characteristics of MOFs. Subsequently, the design principles of robust and efficient MOF-based nanoarrays as OER electrodes are highlighted. Furthermore, detailed discussions focus on the composition, structure, and performance of pristine MOF nanoarrays (MOFNAs) and MOF-based composite nanoarrays. On the one hand, the effects of the two components of MOFs and several modification methods are discussed in detail for MOFNAs. On the other hand, the review emphasizes the use of MOF-based composite nanoarrays composed of MOFs and other nanomaterials, such as oxides, hydroxides, oxyhydroxides, chalcogenides, MOFs, and metal nanoparticles, to guide the rational design of efficient OER electrodes. Finally, perspectives on current challenges, opportunities, and future directions in this research field are provided.

Chiral Quantum Materials: When Chemistry Meets Physics

Chirality is a fundamental property of nature with relevance in biochemistry and physics, particularly in the field of catalysis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying chirality transfer is crucial for advancing the knowledge of chiral-related catalysis. Chiral quantum materials with intriguing chirality-dependent electronic properties, such as spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and exotic spin/orbital angular momentum (SAM/OAM), open novel avenues for linking solid-state topologies with chiral catalysis. In this review, the growth of topological homochiral crystals (THCs) is described, and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen electrocatalysis, and asymmetric catalysis are summarized. A possible link between chirality-dependent electronic properties and heterogeneous catalysis is discussed. Finally, existing challenges in this field are highlighted, and a brief outlook on the impact of THCs on the overarching chemical-physical research is presented.

The regulatory function of the d-orbital structure in TM@g-t-C4N3 for bifunctional catalysis of the oxygen evolution/reduction reaction

Highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution/reduction reaction (OER/ORR) have attracted great attention in research for energy devices with high conversion efficiency. Herein, systematic first-principles investigations are performed to explore the catalytic performance of graphitic C4N3 loaded with single transition metal atoms (TM@g-t-C4N3) for the OER/ORR. The results show that Fe, Co, Ni and Rh@g-t-C4N3 exhibit fascinating bifunctional catalytic activities for both the OER and ORR. Moreover, it is observed that better activities are easily achieved when the valence d orbitals of doped TM atoms are nearly fully occupied. Further analysis reveals the volcano relationship between the OER/ORR performance and the adsorption Gibbs free energy. The adsorption free energy of intermediates in the OER/ORR process is also found to highly correlate with the electronic structures of TM@g-t-C4N3, which are mainly characterized by two quantities, one is the descriptor φ related to the electronegativity and the number of valence electrons in d orbitals, and the other is the projected d band center. The results indicate that it is possible to predict the catalytic performance of TM@g-t-C4N3 by a detailed examination of the electronic properties of the doped TM atoms to some extent. This research not only provides several highly active g-t-C4N3-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the OER/ORR, but also reveals some potential regularities of SAC systems.

Multistage orbital hybridization induced by multisite exchange interactions in high-entropy perovskites for high oxygen evolution reaction

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has garnered considerable attention because of its promising prospects in electrochemical energy conversion applications, but a significant challenge is faced by the insufficient understanding of sluggish OER kinetics. In fact, the intrinsic "acceptance-donation" process of electrons between active sites and reactants is responsible for improving OER activity. Herein, we suggest a multielement hybridization strategy to rematch spin electron occupation and energy splitting in high-entropy perovskites with multiple orbital coordination. In this concept, electronic hopping between t2g and eg orbitals among particular catalytic sites can be obviously enforced due to introducing more favorable energy levels from neighboring metal sites, which can demonstrate multistage orbital hybridization reaction activity. As a result, our proposed multistage-hybridized high-entropy perovskites display an impressive activity of 199.8 mA cm-2 as an overpotential of ∼0.46 V, which is ∼5.3 times that of pristine perovskite. Different from traditional catalyst designs, this study focuses on multistage orbital hybridization and electron exchange interactions through a multisite coordination mechanism to construct a fast reaction pathway. Our findings provide a new strategy for accelerating OER catalytic kinetics.

Electrochemical Potential-Driven Shift of Frontier Orbitals in M-N-C Single-Atom Catalysts Leading to Inverted Adsorption Energies

Electronic structure is essential to understanding the catalytic mechanism of metal single-atom catalysts (SACs), especially under electrochemical conditions. This study delves into the nuanced modulation of "frontier orbitals" in SACs on nitrogen-doped graphene (N-C) substrates by electrochemical potentials. We observe shifts in Fermi level and changes of d-orbital occupation with alterations in electrochemical potentials, emphasizing a synergy between the discretized atomic orbitals of metals and the continuous bands of the N-C based environment. Using O2 and CO2 as model adsorbates, we highlight the direct consequences of these shifts on adsorption energies, unveiling an intriguing inversion of adsorption energies on Co/N-C SAC under negative electrochemical potentials. Such insights are attributed to the role of the dxz and dz2 orbitals, pivotal for stabilizing the π* orbitals of O2. Through this exploration, our work offers insights on the interplay between electronic structures and adsorption behaviors in SACs, paving the way for enhanced catalyst design strategies in electrochemical processes.

Targeted Spin-State Regulation to Boost Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Catalytic reactions are known to be significantly affected by spin states and their variations during reaction processes, yet the mechanisms behind them remain not fully understood, thus preventing the rational optimization of catalysis. Here, we explore the relationship between the spin states of active sites and their catalytic performance, taking the oxygen reduction reaction as an example. We demonstrate that the catalytic performance is spin-state-dependent and can be improved by adjusting spin states during the catalytic process. To this end, we further investigate the possibility of altering the spin states of transition metals through the application of external fields, such as adsorbed species. By studying the influence of the strength of adsorbed ligands on spin states and its impact on catalytic performance, our results show that optimal catalytic performance is achieved when the strength of the external field is neither too strong nor too weak, forming a volcano-like relationship between the catalytic performance and the external field strength. Our findings can have far-reaching implications for the rational design of high-performance catalysis.

Modulation Strategies for the Preparation of High-Performance Catalysts for Urea Oxidation Reaction and Their Applications

Compared with the traditional electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen, urea-assisted electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen has significant advantages and has received extensive attention from researchers. Unfortunately, urea oxidation reaction (UOR) involves a complex six-electron transfer process leading to high overpotential, which forces researchers to develop high-performance UOR catalysts to drive the development of urea-assisted water splitting. Based on the UOR mechanism and extensive literature research, this review summarizes the strategies for preparing highly efficient UOR catalysts. First, the UOR mechanism is introduced and the characteristics of excellent UOR catalysts are pointed out. Aiming at this, the following modulation strategies are proposed to improve the catalytic performance based on summarizing various literature: 1) Accelerating the active phase formation to reduce initial potential; 2) Creating double active sites to trigger a new UOR mechanism; 3) Accelerating urea adsorption and promoting C─N bond cleavage to ensure the effective conduct of UOR; 4) Promoting the desorption of CO2 to improve stability and prevent catalyst poisoning; 5) Promoting electron transfer to overcome the inherent slow dynamics of UOR; 6) Increasing active sites or active surface area. Then, the application of UOR in electrochemical devices is summarized. Finally, the current deficiencies and future directions are discussed.

Ferromagnetic ordering correlated strong metal-oxygen hybridization for superior oxygen reduction reaction activity

The efficiency of transition-metal oxide materials toward oxygen-related electrochemical reactions is classically controlled by metal-oxygen hybridization. Recently, the unique magnetic exchange interactions in transition-metal oxides are proposed to facilitate charge transfer and reduce activation barrier in electrochemical reactions. Such spin/magnetism-related effects offer a new and rich playground to engineer oxide electrocatalysts, but their connection with the classical metal-oxygen hybridization theory remains an open question. Here, using the MnxVyOz family as a platform, we show that ferromagnetic (FM) ordering is intrinsically correlated with the strong manganese (Mn)-oxygen (O) hybridization of Mn oxides, thus significantly increasing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. We demonstrate that this enhanced Mn-O hybridization in FM Mn oxides is closely associated with the generation of active Mn sites on the oxide surface and obtaining favorable reaction thermodynamics under operating conditions. As a result, FM-Mn2V2O7 with a high degree of Mn-O hybridization achieves a record high ORR activity. Our work highlights the potential applications of magnetic oxide materials with strong metal-oxygen hybridization in energy devices.

Strain-Induced Electronic Structure Modulation on MnO2 Nanosheet by Ir Incorporation for Efficient Water Oxidation in Acid

Oxygen electrochemistry plays a key role in renewable energy technologies, such as fuel cells and electrolyzers, but its slow kinetics limits the performance and the commercialization of such devices. Here, a strained MnO2 nanosheet induced by Ir incorporation is developed with optimized electronic structure by a simple hydrothermal method. With the incorporation of Ir, the strain induces elongated Mn─O bond length, and thereby tuning the electronic structure to favor the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. The obtained catalyst exhibits an excellent mass activity of 5681 A g-1 at an overpotential of 300 mV in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , and reaches 50 and 100 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of only 240 and 277 mV, respectively. The catalyst is also stable even at 300 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 . Using the nanosheet as the OER catalyst and the Pt/C as the hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst, a two-electrode electrolyzer achieves 10 mA cm-2 with only a cell voltage of 1.453 V for overall water splitting in 0.5 m H2 SO4 . This strategy enables the material with high feasibility for practical applications on hydrogen production.

Spin-Selective Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Chiral Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synergistic Impact of Inherent Magnetic Moment and Chirality

Electron spin polarization is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck that limits the energy efficiency of water-splitting. Here, we report that both ferrimagnetic (f-Fe3O4) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (s-Fe3O4) catalysts can exhibit external magnetic field (Hext)-induced OER enhancement, and the activity is proportional to their intrinsic magnetic moment. Additionally, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was utilized in synergy with Hext to get a maximum enhancement of up to 89% improvement in current density (at 1.8 V vs RHE) with a low onset potential of 270 mV in s-Fe3O4 catalysts. Spin polarization and the resultant spin selectivity suppress the production of H2O2 and promote the formation of ground state triplet O2 during the OER. Furthermore, the design of chiral s-Fe3O4 with synergistic spin potential effect demonstrates a high spin polarization of ∼42%, as measured using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM).

Spin-State Modulation on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics are heavily correlated with hybridization of the transition metal d-orbital and oxygen intermediate p-orbital, which dictates the barriers of intermediate adsorption/desorption on the active sites of catalysts. Herein, a strategy is developed involving strain engineering and coordination regulation to enhance the hybridization of Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals, and the as-synthesized Ni-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid metal-organic framework (DD-Ni-NDA) nanosheets deliver a low OER overpotential of 260 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 . By integrating an alkaline anion exchange membrane electrolyzer and Pt/C electrode, 200 and 500 mA cm-2 current densities are reached with cell voltages of 1.6 and 2.1 V, respectively. When loaded on a BiVO4 photoanode, the nanosheet enables highly active solar-driven water oxygen. Structural characterizations together with theoretical calculations reveal that the spin state of the centre Ni atoms is regulated by the tensile strain and unsaturated coordination defects in DD-Ni-NDA, and such spin regulation facilitates spin-dependent charge transfer of the OER. Molecular orbital hybridization analysis reveals the mechanism of OH* and OOH* adsorption energy regulation by changes in the DD-Ni-NDA spin state, which provides a deeper understanding of the electronic structure design of catalysts for the OER.

Spin state modulation on dual Fe center by adjacent Ni sites enabling the boosted activities and ultra-long stability in Zn-air batteries

Breakthrough in developing cost-effective Fe-based catalysts with superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities and ultra-long-term stability for application in Zn-air batteries (ZABs) remain a priority but still full of challenges. Herein, the neighboring NiN4 single-metal-atom and Fe2N5 dual-metal-atoms on the N-doped hollow carbon sphere (Fe/Ni-NHCS) were deliberately constructed as the efficient and robust ORR catalyst for ZABs. Both theory calculations and magnetic measurements demonstrate that the introduction of NiN4 provides a significant role on optimizing the electron spin state of Fe2N5 sites and reducing the energy barrier for the adsorption and conversion of the oxygen-containing intermediates, enabling the Fe/Ni-NHCS with excellent ORR performance and ultralow byproduct HO2- yield (0.5%). Impressively, the ZABs driven by Fe/Ni-NHCS exhibit unprecedented long-term rechargeable stability over 1200 h. This work paves a new venue to manipulate the spin state of active sites for simultaneously achieving superior catalytic activities and ultra-long-term stability in energy conversion technologies.

Introducing Bidirectional Axial Coordination into BiVO4 @Metal Phthalocyanine Core-Shell Photoanodes for Efficient Water Oxidation

Core-shell photoanodes have shown great potential for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, the construction of a high-quality interface between the core and shell, as well as a highly catalytic surface, remains a challenge. Herein, guided by computation, we present a BiVO4 photoanode coated with ZnCoFe polyphthalocyanine using pyrazine as a coordination agent. The bidirectional axial coordination of pyrazine plays a dual role by facilitating intimate interfacial contact between BiVO4 and ZnCoFe polyphthalocyanine, as well as regulating the electron density and spin configuration of metal sites in ZnCoFe phthalocyanine, thereby promoting the potential-limiting step of *OOH desorption. The resulting photoanode displayed a high photocurrent density of 5.7±0.1 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE . This study introduces a new approach for constructing core-shell photoanodes, and uncovers the key role of pyrazine axial coordination in modulating the catalytic activity of metal phthalocyanine.

Intrinsic spin shielding effect in platinum-rare-earth alloy boosts oxygen reduction activity

Oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) involve a multistep proton-coupled electron process accompanied by the conversion of the apodictic spin configuration. Understanding the role of spin configurations of metals in the adsorption and desorption of oxygen intermediates during ORRs is critical for the design of efficient ORR catalysts. Herein, a platinum-rare-earth-metal-based alloy catalyst, Pt2Gd, is introduced to reveal the role of spin configurations in the catalytic activity of materials. The catalyst exhibits a unique intrinsic spin reconfiguration because of interactions between the Gd-4f and Pt-5d orbitals. The adsorption and desorption of the oxygen species are optimized by modifying the spin symmetry and electronic structures of the material for increased ORR efficiency. The Pt2Gd alloy exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.95 V and a superior mass activity of 1.5 A·mgPt-1 in a 0.1 M HClO4 electrolyte, as well as higher durability than conventional Pt/C catalysts. Theoretical calculations have proven that the spin shielding effect of Gd pairs increases the spin symmetry of Pt-5d orbitals and adsorption preferences toward spin-polarized intermediates to facilitate ORR. This work clarifies the impact of modulating the intrinsic spin state of Pt through the interaction with the local high spin 4f orbital electrons in rare-earth metals, with the aim of boosting the spin-related oxygen reduction reaction, thus fundamentally contributing to the understanding of new descriptors that control ORR activity.

External Fields Assisted Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction of Confined 1T-VSe2 Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles

As a clean and effective approach, the introduction of external magnetic fields to improve the performance of catalysts has attracted extensive attention. Owing to its room-temperature ferromagnetism, chemical stability, and earth abundance, VSe2 is expected to be a promising and cost-effective ferromagnetic electrocatalyst for the accomplishment of high-efficient spin-related OER kinetics. In this work, a facile pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method combined with rapid thermal annealing (RTA) treatment is used to successfully confine monodispersed 1T-VSe2 nanoparticles in amorphous carbon matrix. As expected, with external magnetic fields of 800 mT stimulation, the confined 1T-VSe2 nanoparticles exhibit highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity with an overpotential of 228 mV for 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable durability without deactivation after >100 h OER operation. The experimental results together with theoretical calculations illustrate that magnetic fields can facilitate the surface charge transfer dynamics of 1T-VSe2 , and modify the adsorption-free energy of *OOH, thus finally improving the intrinsic activity of the catalysts. This work realizes the application of ferromagnetic VSe2 electrocatalyst in highly efficient spin-dependent OER kinetics, which is expected to promote the application of transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) in external magnetic field-assisted electrocatalysis.
