Synthetic Strategies to Extended Aromatic Covalent Organic Frameworks

π-Conjugated materials are highly attractive owing to their unique optical and electronic properties. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a great opportunity for precise arrangement of building units in a π-conjugated crystalline matrix and tuning of the properties through choice of functionalities or post-synthetic modification. With this review, we aim at summarizing both the most representative as well as emerging strategies for the synthesis of π-conjugated COFs. We give examples of direct synthesis using large, π-extended building blocks. COFs featuring fully conjugated linkages such as vinylene, pyrazine, and azole are discussed. Then, post-synthetic modification methods that result in the extension of the COF π-system are reviewed. Throughout, mechanistic insights are presented when available. In the context of their utilization as film devices, we conduct a concise survey of the prominent COF layer deposition techniques reported and their aptness for the deposition of fused aromatic systems.

Boosting H+ Storage in Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries via Integrating Redox-Active Sites into Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Strong π-π Stacking

In the emerging aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs), proton (H+ ) with the smallest molar mass and fast (de)coordination kinetics is considered as the most ideal charge carrier compared with Zn2+ counterpart, however, searching for new hosting materials for H+ storage is still at its infancy. Herein, redox-active hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) assembled from diaminotriazine moiety decorated hexaazatrinnphthalene (HOF-HATN) are for the first time developed as the stable cathode hosting material for boosting H+ storage in AZIBs. The unique integration of hydrogen-bonding networks and strong π-π stacking endow it rapid Grotthuss proton conduction, stable supramolecular structure and inclined H+ storage. As a consequence, HOF-HATN displays a high capacity (320 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1 ) and robust cyclability of (>10000 cycles at 5 A g-1 ) based on three-step cation coordination storage. These findings get insight into the proton transport and storage behavior in HOFs and provide the molecular engineering strategy for constructing well-defined cathode hosting materials for rechargeable aqueous batteries.

Understanding the electronic pi-system of 2D covalent organic frameworks with Wannier functions

We investigate a family of hexagonal 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with phenyl and biphenyl spacer units and different chemical linker species. Chemical trends are elucidated and attributed to microscopic properties of the [Formula: see text]-electron-system spanned by atomic [Formula: see text]-orbitals. We systematically investigate the electronic structure, delocalization of electronic states, effects of disorder, bond torsion, and doping, and correlate these with variable [Formula: see text]-conjugation and nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) aromaticity. Molecular orbitals are obtained from maximally localized Wannier functions that have [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-character, forming distinct [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-bands for all valence states. The Wannier-orbital description goes beyond simple tight-binding models and enables a detailed understanding of the electronic topology, effective electronic coupling and delocalization. It is shown that a meaningful comparison between COFs with different chemical elements can only be made by examining the entire [Formula: see text]-electron system, while a comparison of individual bands (e.g., bands near the Fermi energy) can be a insufficient to derive general design rules for linker and spacer monomer selection. We further identify delocalized states that are spread across tens or hundreds of pores of the 2D COFs and analyze their robustness against structural and energetic disorders like out-of-plane rotations of molecular fragments, different strength of energetic disorder and energetic shifts due to chemical doping.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Fully Conjugated Covalent Organic Frameworks for High-Capacity and Ultrastable Potassium-Ion Batteries

Fully aromatic conjugated covalent organic frameworks (FAC-COFs) with excellent physicochemical stability have been emerging as active semiconductors for diverse potential applications. Developing efficient synthesis methods for fabricating FAC-COFs will significantly facilitate the exploration over their material and photonic/electronic functionalities. Herein, a facile solvent-free strategy is developed for the synthesis of 2D phthalocyanine-based FAC-COFs (FAC-Pc-COFs). Cyclopolymerization of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']bis[1,4]benzodioxin-2,3,9,10-tetracarbonitrile (BBTC) and quinoxalino[2',3':9,10]phenanthro[4,5-abc]phenazine-6,7,15,16-tetracarbonitrile (QPPTC) in ZnCl₂  leads to the fast formation and isolation of BB-FAC-Pc-COF and QPP-FAC-Pc-COF, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy analysis reveal their crystalline nature with sql topology and AA stacking configuration. Thermogravimetric analysis and immersion experiment indicate their excellent stability. The conductivity test demonstrates their high conductivity of 0.93-1.94 × 10^-4  S cm^-1  owing to the fully π-conjugated electronic structural nature. In particular, the as-prepared FAC-Pc-COFs show high-performance K⁺ storage in potassium-ion batteries due to their excellent conductivity, highly ordered and robust structure, and N/O-rich framework nature. Impressively, QPP-FAC-Pc-COF shows a large reversible capacity of 424 mA h g^-1  after 100 cycles at 50 mA g^-1  and a capacity retention of nearly 100% at 2000 mA g^-1  for over 10 000 cycles.

Two-Dimensional Field-Effect Transistor Sensors: The Road toward Commercialization

The evolutionary success in information technology has been sustained by the rapid growth of sensor technology. Recently, advances in sensor technology have promoted the ambitious requirement to build intelligent systems that can be controlled by external stimuli along with independent operation, adaptivity, and low energy expenditure. Among various sensing techniques, field-effect transistors (FETs) with channels made of two-dimensional (2D) materials attract increasing attention for advantages such as label-free detection, fast response, easy operation, and capability of integration. With atomic thickness, 2D materials restrict the carrier flow within the material surface and expose it directly to the external environment, leading to efficient signal acquisition and conversion. This review summarizes the latest advances of 2D-materials-based FET (2D FET) sensors in a comprehensive manner that contains the material, operating principles, fabrication technologies, proof-of-concept applications, and prototypes. First, a brief description of the background and fundamentals is provided. The subsequent contents summarize physical, chemical, and biological 2D FET sensors and their applications. Then, we highlight the challenges of their commercialization and discuss corresponding solution techniques. The following section presents a systematic survey of recent progress in developing commercial prototypes. Lastly, we summarize the long-standing efforts and prospective future development of 2D FET-based sensing systems toward commercialization.

Solution-Processable Semiconducting Conjugated Planar Network

After the emergence of graphene in the material science field, top-down and bottom-up studies to develop semiconducting organic materials with layered structures became highly active. However, most of them have suffered from poor processability, which hampers device fabrication and frustrates practical applications. Here, we suggest an unconventional approach to fabricating semiconducting devices, which avoids the processability issue. We designed a soluble amorphous network using a solution process to form a thin film on a substrate. We then employed heat treatment to develop a flattened organic structure in the thin film, as an active layer for organic thin-film transistors (TFTs). The fabricated TFTs showed good performance in both horizontal and vertical charge transport, suggesting a versatile and useful approach for the development of organic semiconductors.

A first-principles and machine-learning investigation on the electronic, photocatalytic, mechanical and heat conduction properties of nanoporous C5N monolayers

Carbon nitride nanomembranes are currently among the most appealing two-dimensional (2D) materials. As a nonstop endeavor in this field, a novel 2D fused aromatic nanoporous network with a C₅N stoichiometry has been most recently synthesized. Inspired by this experimental advance and exciting physics of nanoporous carbon nitrides, herein we conduct extensive density functional theory calculations to explore the electronic, optical and photocatalytic properties of the C₅N monolayer. In order to examine the dynamic stability and evaluate the mechanical and heat transport properties under ambient conditions, we employ state of the art methods on the basis of machine-learning interatomic potentials. The C₅N monolayer is found to be a direct band gap semiconductor, with a band-gap of 2.63 eV according to the HSE06 method. The obtained results confirm the dynamic stability, remarkable tensile strengths over 10 GPa and a low lattice thermal conductivity of ∼9.5 W m^-1 K^-1 for the C₅N monolayer at room temperature. The first absorption peak of the single-layer C₅N along the in-plane polarization is predicted to appear in the visible range of light. With a combination of high carrier mobility, appropriate band edge positions and strong absorption of visible light, the C₅N monolayer might be an appealing candidate for photocatalytic water splitting reactions. The presented results provide an extensive understanding concerning the critical physical properties of the C₅N nanosheets and also highlight the robustness of machine-learning interatomic potentials in the exploration of complex physical behaviors.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

1,6-Anthrazoline-Linked π-Conjugated Macrocycles and Two-Dimensional Polymer via Friedländer Synthesis

Synthesis of π-conjugated crystalline two-dimensional (2D) polymers remains largely unexplored due to limited synthetic methodology. Herein, we report the preparation of a 1,6-anthrazoline (AZ)-linked crystalline 2D polymer AZP via acid mediated Friedländer synthesis. The feasibility was examined first by two model reactions, followed by synthesis of three AZ-based macrocycles MCn (n=5-7), in which hexagonal MC6 was isolated as the major product. The favorable macrocycle formation could be largely attributed to the dynamic feature of Friedländer synthesis, which involves both imine condensation and aldol condensation. The structure and crystallinity of AZP were confirmed by experiments and simulation. The skeletons of the macrocycles and polymer consist of all-sp² hybridized C/N atoms and are thus π-conjugated and electro-active. Our studies provide a rational way to access kinetically stable 2D crystalline polymers by combination of different dynamic covalent chemistries.

An Expanded 2D Fused Aromatic Network with 90-Ring Hexagons

Two-dimensional fused aromatic networks (2D FANs) have emerged as a highly versatile alternative to holey graphene. The synthesis of 2D FANs with increasingly larger lattice dimensions will enable new application perspectives. However, the synthesis of larger analogues is mostly limited by lack of appropriate monomers and methods. Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterisation and properties of an expanded 2D FAN with 90-ring hexagons, which exceed the largest 2D FAN lattices reported to date.
