Switchable Photonic Bio-Adhesive Materials

Structurally-colored adhesives for sensitive, high-resolution, and non-invasive adhesion self-monitoring

Polymeric adhesives are critical in many applications, from daily life to implantable devices and soft robotics. Monitoring adhesion in a real-time and convenient manner before premature failure is essential yet challenging. Herein, we present structurally-colored adhesives for sensitive, high-resolution, and non-invasive adhesion self-monitoring via distinct color change for detecting subtle deformation and debonding. The structurally-colored adhesives are designed by integrating one-dimensional photonic nanochains into exemplified acrylate-copolymer-based adhesives and demonstrate distinct color-changing capability through a unique tilting mechanism of nanochains under shear. Our structurally-colored adhesives can be customized as pressure-sensitive and structural adhesives, exhibiting ultrafast response (<60 ms), high sensitivity, and high resolution (~120 μm). Moreover, predicting adhesion states and premature failure can be achieved assisted by imaging systems and machine learning algorithms with an average accuracy of up to 97.2%. Our structurally-colored adhesives are expected to offer a practical paradigm for structural health monitoring in the Internet of Things era.

Magneto-Responsive Chiral Optical Materials: Flow-Induced Twisting of Cellulose Nanocrystals in Patterned Magnetic Fields

Magnetic fields have been used to uniformly align the lyotropic chiral nematic (cholesteric) liquid crystalline (LC) phase of biopolymers to a global orientation and optical appearance. Here, we demonstrate that, in contrast, weak and patterned magnetic field gradients can create a complex optical appearance with the variable spatial local organization of needle-like magnetically decorated cellulose nanocrystals. The formation of optically patterned thin films with left- and right-handed chiral and achiral regions is observed and related to local magnetic gradient-driven vortices during LC suspension flow. We trace the localized flow directions of the magnetically decorated nanocrystals during evaporation-induced assembly, demonstrating how competing evaporation and field-induced localized flow affect the twisted organization within magnetically induced vortices. The simulations suggested that localized twisting inversion originates from the interplay between the direction and strength of the local-depth-related magnetic gradients and the receding front through peripheral magnetic gaps. We propose that this finding will lead to magnetically patterned photonic films.

Double-Sided Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Materials under Human-Centric Extreme Environments

Maintaining the adhesion strength of flexible pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is crucial for advanced applications, such as health monitoring. Sustainable mounting is critical for wearable sensor devices, especially under challenging surroundings such as low and high temperatures (e.g., polar regions or deserts), underwater and sweat environments (physical activity), and cyclical shear complex stresses. In this article, we consider the adhesive, mechanical, and optical properties of medical-grade double-sided PSAs by simulating extreme human-centric environments. Diverse temperature conditions, water and humidity exposures, and cyclical loads were selected and tested over long intervals, up to 28 days. We observed that high temperatures increased the shear adhesion strength due to the pore closing and expanding contact area between the adhesive layer and substrate. Conversely, low temperatures caused the adhesive layers to harden and reduce the adhesive strength. Immersion in salty and weakly acidic water and excessive humidity reduced adhesion as water interfered with the interfacial interactions. PSA films showed either adhesive or cohesive failure under extreme mechanical stresses and cyclical loading, which is also affected by the presence of various polar solvents. We demonstrated that the variable adhesive performance, mechanical properties, and optical transparency of pressure-sensitive materials can be directly related to changes in their morphologies, surface roughness, swelling state, and alternation of the mechanical contact area, helping to establish the broader rules of design for wearable human health monitoring sensors for the long-term application of wearable devices, sensors, and electrodes.

Colloidal photonic crystals towards biological applications

Colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs), fabricated from the assembly of micro-/nano-particles, have attracted considerable interest due to their unique properties, such as structural color, slow-photon effect, and high specific surface area (SSA). Benefiting from these properties, significant progress has been made in the biological applications of CPCs. In this perspective, these properties and relative manipulation strategies are firstly discussed, building bridges between properties and biological applications of CPCs. Structural color endows CPCs with naked-eye sensing capability, which can be applied to physiological state assessment and diagnosis, as well as self-report of CPC-based diagnostic and therapeutic devices. The slow-photon effect contributes to enhanced fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and efficacy of photodynamic/photothermal therapy, when CPCs are combined with corresponding functional materials. High SSA provides CPCs with abundant binding sites and superior capabilities for loading, adsorption, delivery, etc. These properties can be utilized individually or synergistically to grant CPCs superior performance in biological applications. Next, the recent advancements of CPCs towards biological applications are summarized, including biosensors, wound dressings, cells-on-a-chip, and phototherapy. Finally, a perspective on the challenges and future development of CPCs for biological applications is presented.

Transforming Commercial Polymers into Tough yet Switchable Adhesives by Trident Photoswitch Molecule Doping: Break Adhesion-Switchability Paradox

Here, a trident molecule doping strategy is introduced to overcome both cohesion-adhesion trade-off and adhesion-switchability conflict, transforming commercial polymers into tough yet photo-switchable adhesives. The strategy involves initial rational design of new trident photoswitch molecules namely TAzo-3 featuring azobenzene and hydroxy-terminated alkyl chains involved rigid-soft tri-branch structure, and subsequent doping into commercial polycaprolactone (PCL) via simple blending. Unique design enables TAzo-3 as a versatile dopant, not only regulating the internal and external supramolecular interaction to balance cohesion and interface adhesion for tough bonding, but also affording marked photothermal effect to facilitate rapid adhesive melting for great photo-switchability. Thus, the optimal TAzo-3-doped PCL (TAzo-3@P) displays markedly-improved bonding performance on diverse substrates compared to linear azobenzene-doped PCL and pure PCL. Impressively, TAzo-3@P on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) attains large room-temperature adhesion strength of 6.7 MPa - surpassing most reported adhesives and many commercial adhesives on PMMA, along with easy photo-induced detachment with remarkable switch ratio of 2.09 × 105. Besides, TAzo-3@P can also act as "permanent" adhesives for only adhesion, demonstrating excellent multi-reusability, anti-freezing and waterproof ability. Mechanism studies unveil that the switchable adhesion is closely linked with the dopant molecule structure while rigid-soft coupled trident structures and hydroxy-terminated alkyl chains are key factors.

Self-Repairing Humidity-Adjustable Anisotropic Adhesion Switch for Smart Manipulation

Stimuli-responsive surface adhesion regulation is widely used in automated assembly systems, intelligent pick-up and placement systems, and soft crawling robots. However, in the actual separation process, it tends to produce separation residue or excessive adhesion. Therefore, how to regulate surface adhesion on demand is a significant challenge. Herein, inspired by the anisotropic adhesion behavior of butterflies and the controlled adhesion behavior of octopuses, based on molecular conformational rearrangement and anisotropic structures, a humidity-responsive PES-PI/PDMS composite surface is achieved to meet the needs of controllable adhesion orientation and strength, which could be used for an intelligent transfer system (grasping and releasing and anisotropic transporting). Humidity can effectively tune the hydrogen bonding and the interaction between polymers, resulting in excellent self-healing and durability properties of the composite surface. Moreover, humidity could adjust the surface transmittance as well, making it possible to be used in humidity sensing and in a detection and encryption/decryption system to enhance environmental monitoring and information protection capabilities. This work not only establishes a method for the fabrication of innovative "high-flexibility" adhesive materials but also provides approaches for the design and development of intelligent response devices.

Concentration-induced spontaneous polymerization of protic ionic liquids for efficient in situ adhesion

The advancement of contemporary adhesives is often limited by the balancing act between cohesion and interfacial adhesion strength. This study explores an approach to overcome this trade-off by utilizing the spontaneous polymerization of a protic ionic liquid-based monomer obtained through the neutralization of 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and hydroxylamine. The initiator-free polymerization process is carried out through a gradual increase in monomer concentration in aqueous solutions caused by solvent evaporation upon heating, which results in the in-situ formation of a tough and thin adhesive layer with a highly entangled polymeric network and an intimate interface contact between the adhesive and substrate. The abundance of internal and external non-covalent interactions also contributes to both cohesion and interfacial adhesion. Consequently, the produced protic poly(ionic liquid)s exhibit considerable adhesion strength on a variety of substrates. This method also allows for the creation of advanced adhesive composites with electrical conductivity or visualized sensing functionality by incorporating commercially available fillers into the ionic liquid adhesive. This study provides a strategy for creating high-performance ionic liquid-based adhesives and highlights the importance of in-situ polymerization for constructing adhesive composites.

Intense Left-handed Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Nematic Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Composite Films

Integrating optically active components into chiral photonic cellulose to fabricate circularly polarized luminescent materials has transformative potential in disease detection, asymmetric reactions, and anticounterfeiting techniques. However, the lack of cellulose-based left-handed circularly polarized light (L-CPL) emissions hampers the progress of these chiral functionalizations. Here, this work proposes an unprecedented strategy: incorporating a chiral nematic organization of hydroxypropyl cellulose with robust aggregation-induced emission luminogens to generate intense L-CPL emission. By utilizing N,N-dimethylformamide as a good solvent for fluorescent components and cellulose matrices, this work produces a right-handed chiral nematic structure film with a uniform appearance in reflective and fluorescent states. Remarkably, this system integrates a high asymmetric factor (0.51) and an impressive emission quantum yield (55.8%) into one fascinating composite. More meaningfully, this approach is versatile, allowing for the incorporation of luminogen derivatives emitting multicolored L-CPL. These chiral fluorescent films possess exceptional mechanical flexibility (toughness up to 0.9 MJ m-3) and structural stability even under harsh environmental exposures, making them promising for the fabrication of various products. Additionally, these films can be cast on the fabrics to reveal multilevel and durable anticounterfeiting capabilities or used as a chiral light source to induce enantioselective photopolymerization, thereby offering significant potential for diverse practical applications.

Chemical Design of Supramolecular Reversible Adhesives for Promising Applications

Supramolecular reversible adhesives have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in various fields. These adhesives exhibit remarkable properties such as reversible adhesion, self-healing, and high flexibility. This concept aims to present a comprehensive overview of the current research progress in developing supramolecular reversible adhesives. Firstly, the fundamentals of supramolecular chemistry and the principles underlying the design and synthesis of reversible adhesive systems are discussed. Next, the concept focuses on characterizing the reversible adhesion strength of supramolecular adhesive systems that have been developed. The adhesion performance of supramolecular reversible adhesives is summarized, highlighting their unique characteristics and promising applications. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in the field of supramolecular reversible adhesives are discussed. The comprehensive overview provided in this concept aims to inspire further research and innovation in this exciting field.

Chiral Materials for Optics and Electronics: Ready to Rise?

Chiral materials have gained burgeoning interest in optics and electronics, beyond their classical application field of drug synthesis. In this review, we summarize the diverse chiral materials developed to date and how they have been effectively applied to optics and electronics to get an understanding and vision for the further development of chiral materials for advanced optics and electronics.

Sticky Multicolor Mechanochromic Labels

Sticky-colored labels are an efficient way to communicate visual information. However, most labels are static. Here, we propose a new category of dynamic sticky labels that change structural colors when stretched. The sticky mechanochromic labels can be pasted on flexible surfaces such as fabric and rubber or even on brittle materials. To enhance their applicability, we demonstrate a simple method for imprinting structural color patterns that are either always visible or reversibly revealed or concealed upon mechanical deformation. The mechanochromic patterns are imprinted with a photomask during the ultraviolet (UV) cross-linking of acrylate-terminated cholesteric liquid crystal oligomers in a single step at room temperature. The photomask locally controls the cross-linking degree and volumetric response of the cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs). A nonuniform thickness change induced by the Poisson's ratio contrast between the pattern and the surrounding background might lead to a color-separation effect. Our sticky multicolor mechanochromic labels may be utilized in stress-strain sensing, building environments, smart clothing, security labels, and decoration.

Stimuli-triggered multilayer films in response to temperature and ionic strength changes for controlled favipiravir drug release

The block copolymer micelles and natural biopolymers were utilized to form layer-by-layer (LbL) films via electrostatic interaction, which were able to effectively load and controllably release favipiravir, a potential drug for the treatment of coronavirus epidemic. The LbL films demonstrated reversible swelling/shrinking behavior along with the manipulation of temperature, which could also maintain the integrity in the structure and the morphology. Due to dehydration of environmentally responsive building blocks, the drug release rate from the films was decelerated by elevating environmental temperature and ionic strength. In addition, the pulsed release of favipiravir was observed from the multilayer films under the trigger of temperature, which ensured the precise control in the content of the therapeutic reagents at a desired time point. The nanoparticle-based LbL films could be used for on-demandin vitrorelease of chemotherapeutic reagents.

Chirality Supramolecular Systems: Helical Assemblies, Structure Designs, and Functions

Chirality, as one of the most striking characteristics, exists at various scales in nature. Originating from the interactions of host and guest molecules, supramolecular chirality possesses huge potential in the design of functional materials. Here, an overview of the recent progress in structure designs and functions of chiral supramolecular materials is present. First, three design routes of the chiral supramolecular structure are summarized. Compared with the template-induced and chemical synthesis strategies that depend on accurate molecular identification, the twisted-assembly technique creates chiral materials through the ordered stacking of the nanowire or films. Next, chirality inversion and amplification are reviewed to explain the chirality transfer from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, where the available external stimuli on the chirality inversion are also given. Lastly, owing to the optical activity and the characteristics of the layer-by-layer stacking structure, the supramolecular chirality materials display various excellent performances, including smart response, shape-memorization, superior mechanical performance, and applications in biomedical fields. To sum up, this work provides a systematic review of the helical assemblies, structure design, and applications of supramolecular chirality systems.

Unraveling the Complex Interactions: Machine Learning Approaches to Predict Bacterial Survival against ZnO and Lanthanum-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles

The rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global health challenge. Due to their unique properties, metal oxide nanoparticles show promise in addressing this issue. However, optimizing these properties requires a deep understanding of complex interactions. This study incorporated data-driven machine learning to predict bacterial survival against lanthanum-doped ZnO nanoparticles. The effect of incorporation of lanthanum ions on ZnO was analyzed. Even with high lanthanum concentration, no significant variations in structural, morphological, and optical properties were observed. The antibacterial activity of La-doped ZnO nanoparticles against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated. Nanoparticles induce 60%, 95%, and 55% bacterial death against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Algorithms such as Multilayer Perceptron, K-Nearest Neighbors, Gradient Boosting, and Extremely Random Trees were used to predict the bacterial survival percentage. Extremely Random Trees performed the best among these models with 95.08% accuracy. A feature relevance analysis extracted the most significant attributes to predict the bacterial survival percentage. Lanthanum content and particle size were irrelevant, despite what can be assumed. This approach offers a promising avenue for developing effective and tailored strategies to reduce the time and cost of developing antimicrobial nanoparticles.

A facile strategy to fabricate a skin-like hydrogel with adhesive and highly stretchable attributes through small molecule triggering toward flexible electronics

Polyacrylamide hydrogel is a promising matrix in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, transparency and flexibility. However, its implementation in skin-attachable applications is impeded by its inherent deficiency in surface-adaptive adhesion and inadequate mechanical conformity to skin tissues. Herein, tris, a biocompatible small molecule with a triple hydrogen bonding cluster in its molecule structure, is introduced for the first time into a polyacrylamide hydrogel. This incorporation is achieved via a facile one-pot strategy, resulting in a highly stretchable hydrogel with an impressive strain capacity (2574.75 ± 28.19%), a human dermis tissue-compatible Young's modulus (27.89 ± 2.05 kPa) and an intrinsically universal adhesion capacity (16.66 ± 0.32 N). These superior properties are attributed to the elevated hydrogen bonding density and the plasticizing effect induced by tris, without compromising the hydrogel's excellent transparency (>90% transmittance). Moreover, by incorporating calcium ions into the resulting soft adhesive hydrogel, we demonstrate its utility in skin-like sensors, leading to a substantial enhancement in strain sensitivity and electrical conductivity, in conjunction with the plasticizing influence exerted by tris. This work offers a facile and environmentally friendly solution to fabricate ultra-stretchable adhesive polyacrylamide hydrogel matrixes for dynamic surfaces, even under large deformation, which can broaden their potential applications in integrated bioelectronics.

Electrochemical grippers based on the tuning of surface forces for applications in micro- and nanorobotics

Existing approaches to robotic manipulation often rely on external mechanical devices, such as hydraulic and pneumatic devices or grippers. Both types of devices can be adapted to microrobots only with difficulties and for nanorobots not all. Here, we present a fundamentally different approach that is based on tuning the acting surface forces themselves rather than applying external forces by grippers. Tuning of forces is achieved by the electrochemical control of an electrode's diffuse layer. Such electrochemical grippers can be integrated directly into an atomic force microscope, allowing for 'pick and place' procedures typically used in macroscopic robotics. Due to the low potentials involved, small autonomous robots could as well be equipped with these electrochemical grippers that will be particularly useful in soft robotics as well as nanorobotics. Moreover, these grippers have no moving parts and can be incorporated in new concepts for actuators. The concept can easily be scaled down and applied to a wide range of objects, such as colloids, proteins, and macromolecules.

Chiro-Optoelectronic Encodable Multilevel Thin Film Electronic Elements with Active Bio-Organic Electrolyte Layer

It is suggested that chiral photonic bio-enabled integrated thin-film electronic elements can pave the base for next-generation optoelectronic processing, including quantum coding for encryption as well as integrated multi-level logic circuits. Despite recent advances, thin-film electronics for encryption applications with large-scale reconfigurable and multi-valued logic systems are not reported to date. Herein, highly secure optoelectronic encryption logic elements are demonstrated by facilitating the humidity-sensitive helicoidal organization of chiral nematic phases of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as an active electrolyte layer combined with printed organic semiconducting channels. The ionic-strength controlled tunable photonic band gap facilitates distinguishable and quantized 13-bit electric signals triggered by repetitive changes of humidity, voltage, and the polarization state of the incident light. As a proof-of-concept, the integrated circuits responding to circularly polarized light and humidity are demonstrated as unique physically unclonable functional devices with high-level logic rarely achieved. The convergence between functional nanomaterials and the multi-valued logic thin-film electronic elements can provide optoelectronic counterfeiting, imaging, and information processing with multilevel logic nodes.

Uniformly aligned flexible magnetic films from bacterial nanocelluloses for fast actuating optical materials

Naturally derived biopolymers have attracted great interest to construct photonic materials with multi-scale ordering, adaptive birefringence, chiral organization, actuation and robustness. Nevertheless, traditional processing commonly results in non-uniform organization across large-scale areas. Here, we report magnetically steerable uniform biophotonic organization of cellulose nanocrystals decorated with superparamagnetic nanoparticles with strong magnetic susceptibility, enabling transformation from helicoidal cholesteric (chiral nematic) to uniaxial nematic phase with near-perfect orientation order parameter of 0.98 across large areas. We demonstrate that magnetically triggered high shearing rate of circular flow exceeds those for conventional evaporation-based assembly by two orders of magnitude. This high rate shearing facilitates unconventional unidirectional orientation of nanocrystals along gradient magnetic field and untwisting helical organization. These translucent magnetic films are flexible, robust, and possess anisotropic birefringence and light scattering combined with relatively high optical transparency reaching 75%. Enhanced mechanical robustness and uniform organization facilitate fast, multimodal, and repeatable actuation in response to magnetic field, humidity variation, and light illumination.

Multivalued Logic for Optical Computing with Photonically Enabled Chiral Bio-organic Structures

Photonic bio-organic multiphase structures are suggested here for integrated thin-film electronic nets with multilevel logic elements for multilevel computing via a reconfigurable photonic bandgap of chiral biomaterials. Herein, inspired by an artificial intelligence system with efficient information integration and computing capability, the photonically active dielectric layer of chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystals is combined with printed-in p- and n-type organic semiconductors as a bifunctional logical element. These adaptive logic elements are capable of triggering tailored quantized electrical output signals under light with different photon energy and at the different photonic bandgaps of the active dielectric layer. The bifunctional structures enable complex memory behavior upon repetitive changes of photonic bandgap (controlled by expansion/contraction of chiral nematic pitch) and photon energy (controlled by light absorption wavelength of complementary organic semiconductor layers), exhibiting effectively a reconfigurable ternary logic response. This proof-of-concept bio-assisted multivalued logic structure facilitates an optical computing system for low-power optical information processing integrated with human-machine interfaces.

Self-assembled liquid crystal architectures for soft matter photonics

Self-assembled architectures of soft matter have fascinated scientists for centuries due to their unique physical properties originated from controllable orientational and/or positional orders, and diverse optic and photonic applications. If one could know how to design, fabricate, and manipulate these optical microstructures in soft matter systems, such as liquid crystals (LCs), that would open new opportunities in both scientific research and practical applications, such as the interaction between light and soft matter, the intrinsic assembly of the topological patterns, and the multidimensional control of the light (polarization, phase, spatial distribution, propagation direction). Here, we summarize recent progresses in self-assembled optical architectures in typical thermotropic LCs and bio-based lyotropic LCs. After briefly introducing the basic definitions and properties of the materials, we present the manipulation schemes of various LC microstructures, especially the topological and topographic configurations. This work further illustrates external-stimuli-enabled dynamic controllability of self-assembled optical structures of these soft materials, and demonstrates several emerging applications. Lastly, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of these materials towards soft matter photonics, and envision future perspectives in this field.

Toward High Sensitivity: Perspective on Colorimetric Photonic Crystal Sensors

The sensitivity of colorimetric photonic crystal (PC) sensors have been significantly improved with the advancement of deformable structural color materials, structures design, sensing signal analysis methods, and fabrication strategies. In this perspective, the strategies toward high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are discussed, from the perspectives of molecular design, single sensor construction, and multisensor assembly, which include incorporation of flexible polymer chains, construction of strong sensor-analyte interactions, incorporation of more soft materials, construction of stimuli-angle/orientation relationship, design of colorimetric sensors in series, and assembly of colorimetric PC sensors in parallel. Based on these strategies, progress of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors in recent years is summarized, in terms of mechano-sensors and chemo-/biosensors. Specifically, PC based optical-electrical dual-signal sensing devices are included. Finally, the future development and challenges of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are presented, in regards to deformable properties, optical properties, analysis methods, and fabrication strategies.

Advanced Functional Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals have been intensively studied as functional materials. Recently, integration of various disciplines has led to new directions in the design of functional liquid-crystalline materials in the fields of energy, water, photonics, actuation, sensing, and biotechnology. Here, recent advances in functional liquid crystals based on polymers, supramolecular complexes, gels, colloids, and inorganic-based hybrids are reviewed, from design strategies to functionalization of these materials and interfaces. New insights into liquid crystals provided by significant progress in advanced measurements and computational simulations, which enhance new design and functionalization of liquid-crystalline materials, are also discussed.

Cellulose Nanocrystals' Assembly under Ionic Strength Variation: From High Orientation Ordering to a Random Orientation

We discuss the effect of the ionic strength and effective charge density on the final structural organization of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) after drying suspensions with different ionic strengths in terms of quantitative characteristics of the orientation order, rarely considered to date. We observed that increasing the ionic strength in the initial suspension results in continuous shrinking of the helical pitch length that shifts the photonic band gap to a far UV region from the visible range (from 400 to 250 nm) because of the increase in the helical twisting power from 4 to 6 μm^-1 and doubling of the twisting angle between neighboring monolayers from 5.5 to 9°. As our estimation of the Coulombic interactions demonstrates, the reduction of the Debye charge screening length below a critical value of 3 nm results in the loss of the long-range helicoidal order and the transition to a disordered morphology with random packing of nanocrystals. Subsequently, very high orientation ordering with the 2D orientation factor, S, within the range 0.8-0.9, close to the theoretical limit of 1, gradually decreased to a very low value of S = 0.1-0.2, a characteristic of random organization at high ionic strength. We suggest that the loss of the chiral ordering is a result of the reduction of repulsive forces, promoting direct physical contact with the reduced contact area during Brownian motion, combined with increased repulsive Coulombic interactions of nanocrystals at nonparallel local packing. Notably, electrolyte addition enhances chiral interactions to the point where the helical twisting power is too large and the resulting nanocrystal bundles can no longer compactly pack without creating unfavorably large free volume. We propose that the Debye charge screening length in suspensions can be used as a universal parameter for CNCs under different conditions and can be used to assess expected ordering characteristics in the solid films.

Bioinspired Supramolecular Photonic Composites: Construction and Emerging Applications

Natural organisms have evolved fascinating structural colors to survive in complex natural environments. Artificial photonic composites developed by imitating the structural colors of organisms have been applied in displaying, sensing, biomedicine, and many other fields. As emerging materials, photonic composites mediated by supramolecular chemistry, namely, supramolecular photonic composites, have been designed and constructed to meet emerging application needs and challenges. This feature article mainly introduces the constructive strategies, properties, and applications of supramolecular photonic composites. First, constructive strategies of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, including the introduction of supramolecular polymers into colloidal photonic array templates, co-assembly of colloidal particles (CPs) with supramolecular polymers, self-assembly of soft CPs, and compounding photonic elastomers with functional substances via supramolecular interactions. Supramolecular interactions endow photonic composites with attractive properties, such as stimuli-responsiveness and healability. Subsequently, the unique optical and mechanical properties of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, and their applications in emerging fields, such as colorful coatings, real-time and visual motion monitoring, and biochemical sensors, are introduced. Finally, challenges and perspectives in supramolecular photonic composites are discussed. Highly Tough, Stretchable, and Solvent-Resistant Cellulose Nanocrystal Photonic Films for Mechanochromism and Actuator Properties

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-derived photonic materials have confirmed great potential in producing renewable optical and engineering areas. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously possess toughness, strength, and multiple responses for developing high-performance sensors, intelligent coatings, flexible textiles, and multifunctional devices. Herein, the authors report a facile and robust strategy that poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) can be converged into the chiral nematic structure of CNCs by ultraviolet-triggered free radical polymerization in an N,N-dimethylformamide solvent system. The resulting CNC-poly(PEGDMA) composite exhibits impressive strength (42 MPa), stretchability (104%), toughness (31 MJ m^-3 ), and solvent resistance. Notably, it preserves vivid optical iridescence, displaying stretchable variation from red, yellow, to green responding to the applied mechanical stimuli. More interestingly, upon exposure to spraying moisture, it executes sensitive actuation (4.6° s^-1 ) and multiple complex 3D deformation behaviors, accompanied by synergistic iridescent appearances. Due to its structural anisotropy of CNC with typical left-handedness, the actuation shows the capability to generate a high probability (63%) of right-handed helical shapes, mimicking a coiled tendril. The authors envision that this versatile system with sustainability, robustness, mechanochromism, and specific actuating ability will open a sustainable avenue in mechanical sensors, stretchable optics, intelligent actuators, and soft robots.

Monolithic Chiral Nematic Organization of Cellulose Nanocrystals under Capillary Confinement

We demonstrate bioenabled crack-free chiral nematic films prepared via a unidirectional flow of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the capillary confinement. To facilitate the uniform long-range nanocrystal organization during drying, we utilized tunicate-inspired hydrogen-bonding-rich 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenethylamine hydrochloride (TOPA) for physical cross-linking of nanocrystals with enhanced hydrogen bonding and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a relaxer of internal stresses in the vicinity of the capillary surface. The CNC/TOPA/PEG film is organized as a left-handed chiral structure parallel to flat walls, and the inner volume of the films displayed transitional herringbone organization across the interfacial region. The resulting thin films also exhibit high mechanical performance compared to brittle films with multiple cracks commonly observed for capillary-formed pure CNC films. The chiral nematic ordering of modified TOPA-PEG-CNC material propagates through the entire thickness of robust monolithic films and across centimeter-sized surface areas, facilitating consistent, vivid iridescence, and enhanced circular polarization. The best performance that prevents the cracks was achieved for a CNC/TOPA/PEG film with a minimal, 3% amount of TOPA. Overall, we suggest that intercalation of small highly adhesive molecules to cellulose nanocrystal-polymer matrices can facilitate uniform flow of liquid crystal phase and drying inside the capillary, resulting in improvement of the ultimate tensile strength and toughness (77% and 100% increase, respectively) with controlled uniform optical reflection and enhanced circular polarization unachievable during regular drying conditions.
