Single Crystals Heterogeneity Impacts the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Three-Dimensional Visualization of Adsorption Distribution in a Single Crystalline Particle of a Metal-Organic Framework

Many unique adsorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been revealed by diffraction crystallography, visualizing their vacant and guest-loaded crystal structures at the molecular scale. However, it has been challenging to see the spatial distribution of the adsorption behaviors throughout a single MOF particle in a transient equilibrium state. Here, we report three-dimensional (3D) visualization of molecular adsorption behaviors in a single crystalline particle of a MOF by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy combined with computed tomography for the first time. The 3D maps of water-coordinated Co sites in a 100 μm-scale MOF-74-Co crystal were obtained with 1 μm spatial resolution under several water vapor pressures. Through the visualization of the water vapor adsorption process, 3D spectroimaging revealed the mechanism and spatial heterogeneity of guest adsorption inside a single particle of a crystalline MOF.

Photo-induced heterogeneous regeneration of Fe(Ⅱ) in Fenton reaction for efficient polycyclic antibiotics removal and in-depth charge transfer mechanism

Fenton reaction is regarded as a potential treatment for antibiotics removal, but challenges remain due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of Fe(III) reduction and incomplete degradation from insufficient active substance. Distinguished from traditional Fe(Ⅱ) regeneration techniques, this work focuses on utilizing the aliovalent redox pairs and built-in electric field to induce photo-excited electrons to cross the material interface and achieve Fe(III) reduction (heterogeneous regeneration). Herein, oxygen-deficient CeO₂ particles are anchored on metal-organic frameworks (MIL-88A) and thus constitute the heterojunction with enhanced photoelectric properties, accelerating the directional charge transfer. Consequently, the synthesized MIL-88A/CeO₂(OV) composite can degrade 95.76% of oxytetracycline within 60 min in photo-Fenton reaction and maintain a high mineralization rate (75.33%) after 4 cyclic tests. Furthermore, the charge transfer mechanisms of Fe cycle and antibiotics mineralization are both unveiled via experiment results and theorical calculation. This work proposes a new paradigm for constructing self-sufficient photo-Fenton catalytic system for efficient and sustainable removal of polycyclic antibiotics.

Investigation of the Performance of Heterogeneous MOF-Silver Nanocube Nanocomposites as CO2 Reduction Photocatalysts by In Situ Raman Spectroscopy

Here, we fabricated two different heterogeneous nanocomposites, core-shell MOF-AgNC and corner MOF-AgNC, as photocatalysts for CO₂ conversion by generating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on silver nanocube templates. These MOF-AgNC nanocomposites showed good CO₂ adsorption features and high CO₂ reduction reactivity. The performances of these MOF-AgNC nanocomposites in CO₂ adsorption and CO₂ reduction reactions can be characterized by in situ Raman spectrum measurement. The corner MOF-AgNC nanocomposite exhibited a faster CO₂ adsorption rate than the core-shell MOF-AgNC nanocomposite, which was due to the higher surface area/volume ratio of the MOF in corner MOF-AgNC. The CO₂ reaction reactivity and mechanisms (products of the reaction) of CO₂ reduction also depended on the morphologies of MOF-AgNC nanocomposites, which were caused by different reaction environments at the interface between the MOF and AgNCs. The CO₂ reduction reactivity of MOF-AgNC nanocomposites also exhibited high sensitivity to the irradiation intensity and wavelength, which was caused by the variation of the number of hot electrons and their positions in AgNCs with the irradiation intensity and irradiation wavelength, respectively. This method for the synthesis of heterogeneous nanocomposites should make it possible to design photocatalysts for various reactions by carefully designing the morphology and composition of nanocomposites.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a highly mobile cancerogenic and teratogenic heavy metal ion. Among the varied technologies applied today to address chromium water pollution, photocatalysis offers a rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III). In contrast to classic photocatalysts, Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous semiconductors that can couple the Cr(VI) to Cr(III) photoreduction to the chromium species immobilization. In this minireview, we wish to discuss and analyze the state-of-the-art of MOFs for Cr(VI) detoxification and contextualizing it to the most recent advances and strategies of MOFs for photocatalysis purposes. The minireview has been structured in three sections: (i) a detailed discussion of the specific experimental techniques employed to characterize MOF photocatalysts, (ii) a description and identification of the key characteristics of MOFs for Cr(VI) photoreduction, and (iii) an outlook and perspective section in order to identify future trends.

Vapor-Phase Adsorption of Xylene Isomers and Ethylbenzene in MOF-74 Thin Films

Thin films of Co-MOF-74 and Ni-MOF-74 were synthesized on Au-coated quartz crystal microbalance substrates by a vapor-assisted conversion (VAC) method that precludes the need for activation via postsynthetic solvent exchange. All thin films were structurally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal that the Ni-MOF-74 films exists as a dense base layer with hemispherical protrusions on the surface. In contrast, the scanning electron microscopy images of the Co-MOF-74 thin films show a rough surface with spherical deposits. The thin film morphologies were different than the powders resulting from the bulk synthesis. Gravimetric vapor-phase adsorption measurements for xylene isomers and ethylbenzene within Co-MOF-74 and Ni-MOF-74 thin films were conducted, and the results were compared with those reported for the corresponding bulk powders. Despite different morphologies, the saturation capacities of Ni-MOF-74 and Co-MOF-74 thin films were found to be nearly equivalent to those reported for the bulk powders. The results demonstrate that the VAC method can produce MOF-74 thin films that retain the intrinsic properties that are observed in bulk powders.

Chemical synthesis of the fluorescent, cyclic dinucleotides cthGAMP

The cGAS‐STING pathway is known for its role in sensing cytosolic DNA introduced by a viral infection, bacterial invasion or tumorigenesis. Free DNA is recognized by the cyclic GMP‐AMP synthase (cGAS) catalyzing the production of 2’,3’‐cyclic guanosine monophosphate‐adenosine monophosphate (2’,3’‐cGAMP) in mammals. This cyclic dinucleotide acts as a second messenger, activating the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) that finally triggers the transcription of interferon genes and inflammatory cytokines. Due to the therapeutic potential of this pathway, both the production and the detection of cGAMP via fluorescent moieties for assay development is of great importance. Here, we introduce the paralleled synthetic access to the intrinsically fluorescent, cyclic dinucleotides 2’3’‐c^thGAMP and 3’3’‐c^thGAMP based on phosphoramidite and phosphate chemistry, adaptable for large scale synthesis. We examine their binding properties to murine and human STING and confirm biological activity including interferon induction by 2’3’‐c^thGAMP in THP‐1 monocytes. Two‐photon imaging revealed successful cellular uptake of 2’3’‐c^thGAMP in THP‐1 cells.
