Designing Angstrom-Scale Asymmetric MOF-on-MOF Cavities for High Monovalent Ion Selectivity

Multiple-readout lateral flow immunoassay for the sensitive detection of nitrofurazone metabolites through ultrabright AIE-MOF coupled in-situ growth strategy

The multiple-readout capability of multimodal detection enhances the flexibility, reliability, and accuracy of lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). The conjugation of two different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a new-generation composite material offers extraordinary opportunities for developing multimodal LFIA. It is anticipated to compensate limitations of traditional single colorimetric signal LFIA and improve the analysis performance. Herein, an ultra-bright fluorescent AIE-MOF was proposed and coupled with an in-situ growth of Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles strategy to obtain a novel multimodal signal tracer (AIE-MOF@PB). Thereafter, it was successfully applied to develop the multimodal LFIA platform for the detection of nitrofurazone metabolites. The synergy of AIE-MOF and PB endows AIE-MOF@PB with superb water dispersibility, robust fluorescence emission, brilliant colorimetric signal, marvelous photothermal conversion, and enhanced antibody coupling efficiency, all of which facilitate a highly sensitive triple-readout LFIA platform. The detection sensitivity improved by at least 5-fold compared with the colloidal gold-based LFIA. This work not only inspires the rational design of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgen)-based complex materials but also highlights the promising potential in flexible point-of-care applications.

Reverse-Selective Anion Separation Relies on Charged "Hourglass" Gate

According to the hydration size and charge property of separated ions, the transport channel can be constructed to achieve precision ion separation, but the ion geometry as a separation parameter to design the channel structure is rarely reported. Herein, a reverse-selective anion separation membrane composed of a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) layer with a charged "hourglass" channel as an ion-selective switch to manipulate oxoanion transport is developed. The gate in "hourglass" with tetrahedral geometry similar to the oxoanion (such as SO2- 4, Cr 2O2- 7, and MnO- 4) boosts the transmission effect oxoanion much larger than Cl- through geometric matching and Coulomb interaction. Specific channel structure exhibits an abnormal selectivity for SO2- 4/Cl- of 20, Cr 2O2- 7/Cl- of 6.6, and MnO- 4/Cl- of 4.0 in a binary-ion system. The transfer behavior of SO2- 4 in the channel revealed by molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculation further indicates the mechanism of the abnormal separation performance. The universality of the membrane structure is validated by the formation of different nitrogen-containing modified layers, which also achieves in situ growth of the MOFs layer, and exhibits similar reversal separation performance. The geometric configuration control of ion transport channels presents a novel effective strategy to realize the precise separation of target ions.

A Bioinspired Membrane with Ultrahigh Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ Separations Enables Direct Lithium Extraction from Brine

Membranes with precise Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ separations are imperative for lithium extraction from brine to address the lithium supply shortage. However, achieving this goal remains a daunting challenge due to the similar valence, chemical properties, and subtle atomic-scale distinctions among these monovalent cations. Herein, inspired by the strict size-sieving effect of biological ion channels, a membrane is presented based on nonporous crystalline materials featuring structurally rigid, dimensionally confined, and long-range ordered ion channels that exclusively permeate naked Li+ but block Na+ and K+. This naked-Li+-sieving behavior not only enables unprecedented Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ selectivities up to 2707.4 and 5109.8, respectively, even surpassing the state-of-the-art membranes by at least two orders of magnitude, but also demonstrates impressive Li+/Mg2+ and Li+/Ca2+ separation capabilities. Moreover, this bioinspired membrane has to be utilized for creating a one-step lithium extraction strategy from natural brines rich in Na+, K+, and Mg2+ without utilizing chemicals or creating solid waste, and it simultaneously produces hydrogen. This research has proposed a new type of ion-sieving membrane and also provides an envisioning of the design paradigm and development of advanced membranes, ion separation, and lithium extraction.

Unlocking Direct Lithium Extraction in Harsh Conditions through Thiol-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Subnanofluidic Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with high ion selectivity are highly desirable for direct lithium-ion (Li+) separation from industrial brines. However, very few MOF membranes can efficiently separate Li+ from brines of high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratios and keep stable in ultrahigh Mg2+-concentrated brines. This work reports a type of MOF-channel membranes (MOFCMs) by growing UiO-66-(SH)2 into the nanochannels of polymer substrates to improve the efficiency of MOF membranes for challenging Li+ extraction. The resulting membranes demonstrate excellent monovalent metal ion selectivity over divalent metal ions, with Li+/Mg2+ selectivity up to 103 since Mg2+ should overcome a higher energy barrier than Li+ when transported through the MOF pores, as confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. Under dual-ion diffusion, as the Mg2+/Li+ mole ratio of the feed solution increases from 0.2 to 30, the membrane Li+/Mg2+ selectivity decreases from 1516 to 19, corresponding to the purity of lithium products between 99.9 and 95.0%. Further research on multi-ion diffusion that involves Mg2+ and three monovalent metal ions (K+, Na+, and Li+, referred to as M+) in the feed solutions shows a significant improvement in Li+/Mg2+ separation efficiency. The Li+/Mg2+ selectivity can go up to 1114 when the Mg2+/M+ molar concentration ratio is 1:1, and it remains at 19 when the ratio is 30:1. The membrane selectivity is also stable for 30 days in a highly concentrated solution with a high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratio. These results indicate the feasibility of the MOFCMs for direct lithium extraction from brines with Mg2+ concentrations up to 3.5 M. This study provides an alternative strategy for designing efficient MOF membranes in extracting valuable minerals in the future.

Toward Selective Transport of Monovalent Metal Ions with High Permeability Based on Crown Ether-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Framework Sub-Nanochannels

Achieving selective transport of monovalent metal ions with high precision and permeability analogues to biological protein ion channels has long been explored for fundamental research and various applications, such as ion sieving, mineral extraction, and energy harvesting and conversion. However, it still remains a significant challenge to construct artificial nanofluidic devices to realize the trade-off effects between selective ion transportation and high ion permeability. In this work, we report a bioinspired functional micropipet with in situ growth of crown ether-encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) inside the tip and realize selective transport of monovalent metal ions. The functional ion-selective micropipet with sub-nanochannels was constructed by the interfacial growth method with the formation of composite MOFs consisting of ZIF-8 and 15-crown-5. The resulting micropipet device exhibited obvious monovalent ion selectivity and high flux of Li+ due to the synergistic effects of size sieving in subnanoconfined space and specific coordination of 15-crown-5 toward Na+. The selectivity of Li+/Na+, Li+/K+, Li+/Ca2+, and Li+/Mg2+ with 15-crown-5@ZIF-8-functionalized micropipet reached 3.9, 5.2, 105.8, and 122.4, respectively, which had an obvious enhancement compared to that with ZIF-8. Notably, the ion flux of Li+ can reach up to 93.8 ± 3.6 mol h-1·m-2 that is much higher than previously reported values. Furthermore, the functional micropipet with 15-crown-5@ZIF-8 sub-nanochannels exhibited stable Li+ selectivity under various conditions, such as different ion concentrations, pH values, and mixed ion solutions. This work not only provides new opportunities for the development of MOF-based nanofluidic devices for selective ion transport but also facilitates the promising practical applications in lithium extraction from salt-like brines, sewage treatment, and other related aspects.

Interfacial Engineering of Heterogeneous Reactions for MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a subclass of porous crystalline materials with unique structures and multifunctional properties, play a pivotal role in various research domains. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward composite materials based on MOFs, particularly MOF-on-MOF heterostructures. Compared to individual MOF materials, MOF-on-MOF structures harness the distinctive attributes of two or more different MOFs, enabling synergistic effects and allowing for the tailored design of diverse multilayered architectures to expand their application scope. However, the rational design and facile synthesis of MOF-on-MOF composite materials are in principle challenging due to the structural diversity and the intricate interfaces. Hence, this review primarily focuses on elucidating the factors that influence their interfacial growth, with a specific emphasis on the interfacial engineering of heterogeneous reactions, in which MOF-on-MOF hybrids can be conveniently obtained by using pre-fabricated MOF precursors. These factors are categorized as internal and external elements, encompassing inorganic metals, organic ligands, lattice matching, nucleation kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Meanwhile, these intriguing MOF-on-MOF materials offer a wide range of advantages in various application fields, such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and energy-related applications. Finally, this review highlights current complexities and challenges while providing a forward-looking perspective on future research directions.

Microenvironment-Modulating Adsorption Enables Highly Efficient Lithium Extraction under Natural pH Conditions

Ion-sieve adsorbents are effective materials in practical applications for extracting liquid lithium. However, it is greatly suppressed in adsorption capacity and selectivity (Li/Mg) under natural near-neutral conditions of seawater or salt lakes, due to the interference of in situ released H+ and Mg2+ impurity. This paper proposes an adsorbent with a microenvironment-modulating function as a solution. The introduction of quaternary ammonium groups into the carrier accelerates the migration of H+, while preventing the diffusion of Mg2+ by electrostatic repulsion. Besides, it can also prestore OH-, effectively consuming the generated hydrogen ions in situ. Based on the rational design, the alkali consumption of the microenvironment-modulating strategy is dramatically reduced to 1/144 of the traditional alkali-adding method. Additionally, adsorption performance is significantly promoted under natural pH conditions, with a maximum 33 times higher separation factor (selectivity) and 4 times higher adsorption capacity than commercial ion-sieve adsorbents. This development indicates the feasibility of using microenvironment modulation for effective lithium extraction and inspires the development of next-generation high-performance adsorbents.

Regulating ion affinity and dehydration of metal-organic framework sub-nanochannels for high-precision ion separation

Membrane consisting of ordered sub-nanochannels has been pursued in ion separation technology to achieve applications including desalination, environment management, and energy conversion. However, high-precision ion separation has not yet been achieved owing to the lack of deep understanding of ion transport mechanism in confined environments. Biological ion channels can conduct ions with ultrahigh permeability and selectivity, which is inseparable from the important role of channel size and "ion-channel" interaction. Here, inspired by the biological systems, we report the high-precision separation of monovalent and divalent cations in functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes (UiO-66-(X)2, X = NH2, SH, OH and OCH3). We find that the functional group (X) and size of the MOF sub-nanochannel synergistically regulate the ion binding affinity and dehydration process, which is the key in enlarging the transport activation energy difference between target and interference ions to improve the separation performance. The K+/Mg2+ selectivity of the UiO-66-(OCH3)2 membrane reaches as high as 1567.8. This work provides a gateway to the understanding of ion transport mechanism and development of high-precision ion separation membranes.

Highly Light-Harvesting MOF-on-MOF Heterostructure: Cascading Functionality to Flexible Photogating of Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor and Bienzyme Cascade Detection

Recently, organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) bioanalysis has become a prominent technique for the high-performance detection of biomolecules. However, as a sensitive index of the OPECT, the dynamic regulation transconductance (gm) is still severely deficient. Herein, this work reports a new photosensitive metal-organic framework (MOF-on-MOF) heterostructure for the effective modulation of maximum gm and natural bienzyme interfacing toward choline detection. Specifically, the bidentate ligand MOF (b-MOF) was assembled onto the UiO-66 MOF (u-MOF) by a modular assembly method, which could facilitate the charge separation and generate enhanced photocurrents and offer a biophilic environment for the immobilization of choline oxidase (ChOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) through hydrogen-bonded bridges. The transconductance of the OPECT could be flexibly altered by increased light intensity to maximal value at zero gate bias, and sensitive choline detection was achieved with a detection limit of 0.2 μM. This work reveals the potential of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures for futuristic optobioelectronics.

Ternary Heterostructure Membranes with Two-Dimensional Tunable Channels for Highly Selective Ion Separation

Selective ion separation from brines is pivotal for attaining high-purity lithium, a critical nonrenewable resource. Conventional methods encounter substantial challenges, driving the quest for streamlined, efficient, and swift approaches. Here, we present a graphene oxide (GO)-based ternary heterostructure membrane with a unique design. By utilizing Zn2+-induced confinement synthesis in a two-dimensional (2D) space, we incorporated two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and zinc alginate (ZA) polymers precisely within layers of the GO membrane, creating tunable interlayer channels with a ternary heterostructure. The pivotal design lies in ion insertion into the two-dimensional (2D) membrane layers, achieving meticulous modulation of layer spacing based on ion hydration radius. Notably, the ensuing layer spacing within the hybrid ionic intercalation membrane occupies an intermediary realm, positioned astutely between small-sized hydrated ionic intercalation membrane spacing and their more extensive counterparts. This deliberate configuration accelerates the swift passage of diminutive hydrated ions while simultaneously impeding the movement of bulkier ions within the brine medium. The outcome is remarkable selectivity, demonstrated by the partitioning of K+/Li+ = 20.9, Na+/K+ = 31.2, and Li+/Mg2+ = 9.5 ion pairs. The ZIF-8/GO heterostructure significantly contributes to the selectivity, while the mechanical robustness and stability, improved by the ZA/GO heterostructure, further support its practical applicability. This report reports an advanced membrane design, offering promising prospects for lithium extraction and various ion separation processes.

Induced Production of Atypical Naturally Nonpreferred Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Detachment via Provoking Post-Mismatching

The structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically determined by the building blocks that compose them and the conditions under which they are formed. MOFs tend to adopt a thermodynamically and/or kinetically stable structure (naturally preferred form). Thus, constructing MOFs with naturally nonpreferred structures is a challenging task, as it requires avoiding the easier pathway toward a naturally preferred MOF. Herein, an approach to construct naturally nonpreferred dicarboxylate-linked MOFs employing reaction templates is reported. This strategy relies on the registry between the surface of the template and the cell lattice of a target MOF, which reduces the effort required to form naturally nonpreferred MOFs. Reactions of p-block trivalent metal ions (Ga3+ and In3+ ) with dicarboxylic acids typically produce preferred MIL-53 or MIL-68. However, the surface of UiO-67 (and UiO-66) template exhibits the well-defined hexagonal lattice, which induce the selective formation of a naturally nonpreferred MIL-88 structure. Inductively grown MIL-88s are purely isolated from the template via provoking a post-mismatch in their lattices and weakening the interfacial interaction between product and template. It is also discovered that an appropriate template for effective induced production of naturally nonpreferred MOFs shall be properly selected based on the cell lattice of a target MOF.

Metal-organic framework glass composites

The melting phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recognised as one of the fourth generation MOF paradigm behaviours. Molten MOFs have high processibility for producing mechanically robust glassy MOF macrostructures, and they also offer highly tunable interfacial characteristics when combined with other types of functional materials, such as crystalline MOFs, inorganic glass and metal halide perovskites. As a result, MOF glass composites have emerged as a family of functional materials with dynamic properties and hierarchical structural control. These nanocomposites allow for sophisticated materials science studies as well as the fabrication of next-generation separation, catalysis, optical, and biomedical devices. Here, we review the approaches for designing, fabricating, and characterising MOF glass composites. We determine the key application opportunities enabled by these composites and explore the remaining hurdles, such as improving thermal and chemical compatibility, regulating interfacial properties, and scalability.

Cation Exchange Membranes and Process Optimizations in Electrodialysis for Selective Metal Separation: A Review

The selective separation of metal species from various sources is highly desirable in applications such as hydrometallurgy, water treatment, and energy production but also challenging. Monovalent cation exchange membranes (CEMs) show a great potential to selectively separate one metal ion over others of the same or different valences from various effluents in electrodialysis. Selectivity among metal cations is influenced by both the inherent properties of membranes and the design and operating conditions of the electrodialysis process. The research progress and recent advances in membrane development and the implication of the electrodialysis systems on counter-ion selectivity are extensively reviewed in this work, focusing on both structure-property relationships of CEM materials and influences of process conditions and mass transport characteristics of target ions. Key membrane properties, such as charge density, water uptake, and polymer morphology, and strategies for enhancing ion selectivity are discussed. The implications of the boundary layer at the membrane surface are elucidated, where differences in the mass transport of ions at interfaces can be exploited to manipulate the transport ratio of competing counter-ions. Based on the progress, possible future R&D directions are also proposed.

Construction of defected MOF-74 with preserved crystallinity for efficient catalytic cyanosilylation of benzaldehyde

Numerous open metal sites and well-developed micropores are the two most significant characteristics that should be imparted to design metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as effective catalysts. However, the construction of the best MOF catalyst with both these characteristics is challenging because the creation of numerous open metal sites generally triggers some structural collapse of the MOF. Herein, we report the construction of well-structured but defected MOFs through the growth of defected MOFs, where some of the original organic linkers were replaced with analog organic linkers, on the surface of a crystalline MOF template (MOF-on-MOF growth). Additional open metal sites within the MOF-74 structure were generated by replacing some of the 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-bezenedicarboxylic acid presenting in MOF-74 with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid due to the missing hydroxyl groups. And the resulting additional open metal sites within the MOF-74 structure resulted in enhanced catalytic activity for the cyanosilylation of aldehydes. However, the collapse of some of the well-developed MOF-74 structure was also followed by structural defects. Whereas, the growth of defected MOF-74 (D-MOF-74) on the well-crystallized MOF-74 template led to the production of relatively well-crystallized D-MOF-74. Core-shell type MOF-74@D-MOF-74 having abundant open metal sites with a preserved crystallinity exhibited the efficient catalytic cyanosilylation of several aldehydes. Additionally, MOF-74@D-MOF-74 displayed excellent recyclability during the consecutive catalytic cycles.

Two-Dimensional Nanofluidic Membranes with Intercalated In-Plane Shortcuts for High-Performance Blue Energy Harvesting

Two-dimensional nanofluidic membranes offer great opportunities for developing efficient and robust devices for ionic/water-nexus energy harvesting. However, low counterion concentration and long pathway through limited ionic flux restrict their output performance. Herein, it is demonstrated that rapid diffusion kinetics can be realized in two-dimensional nanofluidic membranes by introducing in-plane holes across nanosheets, which not only increase counterion concentration but also shorten pathway length through the membranes. Thus, the holey membranes exhibited an enhanced performance relative to the pristine ones in terms of osmotic energy conversion. In particular, a biomimetic multilayered membrane sequentially assembled from pristine and holey sections offers an optimized combination of selectivity and permeability, therefore generating a power density up to 6.78 W m^-2 by mixing seawater and river water, superior to the majority of the state-of-the-art lamellar nanofluidic membranes. This work highlights the importance of channel morphologies and presents a general strategy for effectively improving ion transport through lamellar membranes for high-performance nanofluidic devices.

Biotechnological advancements towards water, food and medical healthcare: A review

The global health status is highly affected by the growing pace of urbanization, new lifestyles, climate changes, and resource exploitation. Modern technologies pave a promising way to deal with severe concerns toward sustainable development. Herein, we provided a comprehensive review of some popular biotechnological advancements regarding the progress achieved in water, food, and medicine, as the most substantial fields related to public health. The emergence of novel organic/inorganic materials has brought about significant improvement in conventional water treatment techniques, anti-fouling approaches, anti-microbial agents, food processing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and implants. Particularly, a growing interest has been devoted to nanomaterials and their application for developing novel structures or improving the characteristics of standard components. Also, bioinspired materials have been widely used to improve the performance, efficiency, accuracy, stability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of traditional systems. On the other side, the fabrication of innovative devices for precisely monitoring and managing various ecosystem and human health issues is of great importance. Above all, exceptional advancements in designing ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), and implantable medical devices have altered the future landscape of environmental and biomedical research. This review paper aimed to shed light on the wide-ranging materials and devices that have been developed for health applications and mainly focused on the impact of nanotechnology in this field.

Switchable Na+ and K+ selectivity in an amino acid functionalized 2D covalent organic framework membrane

Biological cell membranes can efficiently switch Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity in response to external stimuli, but achieving analogous functions in a single artificial membrane is challenging. Here, we report highly crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with well-defined nanochannels and coordinative sites (i. e., amino acid) that act as ion-selective switches to manipulate Na⁺ and K⁺ transport. The ion selectivity of the COF membrane is dynamic and can be switched between K⁺-selective and Na⁺-selective in a single membrane by applying a pH stimulus. The experimental results combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the switchable Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity originates from the differentiated coordination interactions between ions and amino acids. Benefiting from the switchable Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity, we further demonstrate the membrane potential switches by varying electrolyte pH, miming the membrane polarity reversal during neural signal transduction in vivo, suggesting the great potential of these membranes for in vitro biomimetic applications.

Electro-Driven Materials and Processes for Lithium Recovery—A Review

The mass production of lithium-ion batteries and lithium-rich e-products that are required for electric vehicles, energy storage devices, and cloud-connected electronics is driving an unprecedented demand for lithium resources. Current lithium production technologies, in which extraction and purification are typically achieved by hydrometallurgical routes, possess strong environmental impact but are also energy-intensive and require extensive operational capabilities. The emergence of selective membrane materials and associated electro-processes offers an avenue to reduce these energy and cost penalties and create more sustainable lithium production approaches. In this review, lithium recovery technologies are discussed considering the origin of the lithium, which can be primary sources such as minerals and brines or e-waste sources generated from recycling of batteries and other e-products. The relevance of electro-membrane processes for selective lithium recovery is discussed as well as the potential and shortfalls of current electro-membrane methods.
