Recent Progress and Future Advances on Aqueous Monovalent-Ion Batteries towards Safe and High-Power Energy Storage

High-Entropy Prussian Blue Analogues Enable Lattice Respiration for Ultrastable Aqueous Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Aqueous aluminum ion batteries (AAIBs) hold significant potential for grid-scale energy storage owing to their intrinsic safety, high theoretical capacity, and abundance of aluminum. However, the strong electrostatic interactions and delayed charge compensation between high-charge-density aluminum ions and the fixed lattice in conventional cathodes impede the development of high-performance AAIBs. To address this issue, this work introduces, for the first time, high-entropy Prussian blue analogs (HEPBAs) as cathodes in AAIBs with unique lattice tolerance and efficient multipath electron transfer. Benefiting from the intrinsic long-range disorder and robust lattice strain field, HEPBAs enable the manifestation of the lattice respiration effect and minimize lattice volume changes, thereby achieving one of the best long-term stabilities (91.2% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1) in AAIBs. Additionally, the interaction between the diverse metal atoms generates a broadened d-band and reduced degeneracy compared with conventional Prussian blue and its analogs (PBAs), which enhances the electron transfer efficiency with one of the best rate performance (79.2 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1) in AAIBs. Furthermore, exceptional element selectivity in HEPBAs with unique cocktail effect can facile tune electrochemical behavior. Overall, the newly developed HEPBAs with a high-entropy effect exhibit promising solutions for advancing AAIBs and multivalent-ion batteries.

Catalytic role of in-situ formed C-N species for enhanced Li2CO3 decomposition

Sluggish kinetics of the CO2 reduction/evolution reactions lead to the accumulation of Li2CO3 residuals and thus possible catalyst deactivation, which hinders the long-term cycling stability of Li-CO2 batteries. Apart from catalyst design, constructing a fluorinated solid-electrolyte interphase is a conventional strategy to minimize parasitic reactions and prolong cycle life. However, the catalytic effects of solid-electrolyte interphase components have been overlooked and remain unclear. Herein, we systematically regulate the compositions of solid-electrolyte interphase via tuning electrolyte solvation structures, anion coordination, and binding free energy between Li ion and anion. The cells exhibit distinct improvement in cycling performance with increasing content of C-N species in solid-electrolyte interphase layers. The enhancement originates from a catalytic effect towards accelerating the Li2CO3 formation/decomposition kinetics. Theoretical analysis reveals that C-N species provide strong adsorption sites and promote charge transfer from interface to *CO22- during discharge, and from Li2CO3 to C-N species during charge, thereby building a bidirectional fast-reacting bridge for CO2 reduction/evolution reactions. This finding enables us to design a C-N rich solid-electrolyte interphase via dual-salt electrolytes, improving cycle life of Li-CO2 batteries to twice that using traditional electrolytes. Our work provides an insight into interfacial design by tuning of catalytic properties towards CO2 reduction/evolution reactions.

Defect-Free Prussian Blue Analogue as Zero-Strain Cathode Material for High-Energy-Density Potassium-Ion Batteries

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been widely studied as cathodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to their three-dimensional framework structure and easily adjustable composition. However, the phase transition behavior and [Fe(CN)6]4- anionic defects severely deteriorate electrochemical performances. Herein, we propose a defect-free potassium iron manganese hexacyanoferrate (K1.47Fe0.5Mn0.5[Fe(CN)6]·1.26H2O, KFMHCF-1/2) as the cathode material for PIBs. The Fe-Mn binary synergistic and defect-free effects can inhibit the cell volume change and octahedral slip during the K-ion insertion/extraction process, so that the phase transformation behavior (monoclinic ↔ cubic) is effectively inhibited, achieving a zero-strain solid solution mechanism employing Fe and Mn as dual active-sites. Thus, KFMHCF-1/2 contributes the highest initial capacity of 155.3 mAh·g-1 with an energy density of 599.5 Wh·kg-1 at 10 mA·g-1 among the reported PBA cathodes, superior rate capability, and cyclic stability over 450 cycles. The assembled K-ion full battery using K deposited on graphite (K@G) as anode also delivers high reversible specific capacity of 131.1 mAh·g-1 at 20 mA·g-1 and ultralong lifespans over 1000 cycles at 50 mA·g-1 with the lowest capacity decay rate of 0.044% per cycle. This work will promote the rapid application of high-energy-density PIBs.

The LiV3 O8 Superlattice Cathode with Optimized Zinc Ion Insertion Chemistry for High Mass-Loading Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Resolving the sluggish transport kinetics of divalent Zn2+ in the cathode lattice and improving mass-loading performance are crucial for advancing the zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) application. Herein, PEO-LiV3 O8 superlattice nanosheets (PEO-LVO) with expanded interlayer spacing (1.16 nm) are fabricated to provide a high-rate, stable lifetime, and large mass-loading cathode. The steady in-plane expansion without shrinkage after the first cycle, but reversible H+ /Zn2+ co-insertion in PEO-LVO are demonstrated by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and ex situ characterizations. Moreover, the large capacity of PEO-LVO is traced back to the optimized Zn2+ insertion chemistry with increased Zn2+ storage ratio, which is facilitated by the interlayer PEO in lowering the Zn2+ diffusion barrier and increased number of active sites from additional interfaces, as anticipated by density functional theory. Due to the optimized ion insertion resulting in stalled interfacial byproducts and rapid kinetics, PEO-LVO achieves excellent high mass-loading performance (areal capacity up to 6.18 mAh cm-2 for freestanding electrode with 24 mg cm-2 mass-loading and 2.8 mAh cm-2 at 130 mA cm-2 for conventional electrode with 27 mg cm-2 mass-loading). As a proof-of-concept, the flexible all-solid-state fiber-shaped AZIBs with high mass-loading woven into a fabric can power an electronic watch, highlighting the application potential of PEO-LVO cathode.

In Situ Fe-Substituted Hexacyanoferrate for High-Performance Aqueous Potassium Ion Batteries

The eco-friendliness, safety, and affordability of aqueous potassium batteries (AKIBs) have made them popular for large-scale energy storage devices. However, the cycling and rate performance of research materials, particularly cobalt hexacyanoferrate, have yet to meet satisfactory standards. Herein, a room-temperature drafted K1.66 Fe0.25 Co0.75 [Fe(CN)6 ]·0.83H2 O (KFCHCF) sample is reported using an in situ substitution strategy. A higher concentration of ferrocyanide ions decreases the water content and increases the potassium content, while citric acid works as a chelating agent and is responsible for Fe-substitution in the KFCHCF sample. The resultant KFCHCF sample exhibits good rate performance, and about 97% and 90.6% of discharge capacity are conserved after 400 and 1000 cycles at 100 and 200 mA g-1 , respectively. The full cell using the KFCHCF cathode and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride-derived polyimide (PNTCDA) anode maintains ≈74.93% and 74.35% of discharge capacity at 200 mA g-1 and 1000 mA g-1 for 1000 and >10,000 cycles, respectively. Furthermore, ex situ characterizations demonstrate the high reversibility of K-ions and structural stability during the charge-discharge process. Such high performance is attributed to the fast K-ion migration and crystal structure stabilization caused by in situ Fe-substitution in the KFCHCF sample. Other hexacyanoferrates can be synthesized using this method and used in grid-scale storage systems.

Oxygen Vacancies Boosted Proton Intercalation Kinetics for Aqueous Aluminum-Manganese Batteries

Aluminum-ion batteries have garnered an extensive amount of attention due to their superior electrochemical performance, low cost, and high safety. To address the limitation of battery performance, exploring new cathode materials and understanding the reaction mechanism for these batteries are of great significance. Among numerous candidates, multiple structures and valence states make manganese-based oxides the best choice for aqueous aluminum-ion batteries (AAIBs). In this work, a new cathode consists of γ-MnO2 with abundant oxygen vacancies. As a result, the electrode shows a high discharge capacity of 481.9 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and a sustained reversible capacity of 128.6 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.4 A g-1. In particular, through density functional theory calculation and experimental comparison, the role of oxygen vacancies in accelerating the reaction kinetics of H+ has been verified. This study provides insights into the application of manganese dioxide materials in aqueous AAIBs.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Battery Technologies for High-Energy Aqueous Batteries

Aqueous batteries have garnered significant attention in recent years as a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for energy storage, owing to their inherent safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. This study offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements, persistent challenges, and the prospects of aqueous batteries, with a primary focus on energy density compensation of various battery engineering technologies. Additionally, cutting-edge high-energy aqueous battery designs are emphasized as a reference for future endeavors in the pursuit of high-energy storage solutions. Finally, a dual-compatibility battery configuration perspective aimed at concurrently optimizing cycle stability, redox potential, capacity utilization for both anode and cathode materials, as well as the selection of potential electrode candidates, is proposed with the ultimate goal of achieving cell-level energy densities exceeding 400 Wh kg-1 .

The impact of spatially heterogeneous chemical doping on the electronic properties of CdSe quantum dots: insights from ab initio computation

The introduction of copper (Cu) impurity in semiconductor CdSe quantum dots (QDs) gives rise to unique photoluminescence (PL) bands exhibiting distinctive characteristics, like broad line width, significant Stokes shift, and complex temporal decay. The atomistic origins of these spectral features are yet to be understood comprehensively. We employed multiple computational techniques to systematically study the impact of the spatial heterogeneity of Cu atoms on the stability and photophysical properties, including the emission linewidth of doped QDs under ambient conditions. The Cu substitution introduces a spin-polarized intragap state, the energetic position of which is strongly dependent on the dopant location and causes spectral broadening in QD ensembles. Furthermore, the dopant dynamics under ambient conditions are significantly influenced by the specific arrangement of Cu within the QDs. The dynamic electronic structures of surface-doped CdSe illustrate more pronounced perturbations and vary the mid-gap state position more drastically than those of the core-doped QDs. Vibronic coupling broadens the photoluminescence peaks associated with the conduction band-to-defect level transition for individual QDs. These insights into the dynamic structure-photophysical property relationship suggest viable approaches, such as tuning the operational temperature and selective co-doping, to enhance the functional performances of doped CdSe QDs strategically.

A V2O5 cathode for aqueous rechargeable Pb-ion batteries

Aqueous rechargeable metal batteries (AMBs) have attracted great attention and have been regarded as a next-generation promising energy storage system. However, the high-activity metal anodes usually face side reactions, passivation, and hydrogen evolution reactions, which impede the development of high-performance AMBs. Here, we designed and assembled a Pb metal battery based on a highly reversible Pb metal anode and layered V2O5 cathode, which showed good electrochemical performance. This new-type battery will encourage more investigations for high-performance AMBs and open up an innovation pathway for traditional lead-acid batteries.

Nanoscale probing of local dielectric changes at the interface between solids and aqueous saline solutions

The mobility of dissolved ions and charged molecules at interfaces underpins countless processes in science and technology. Experimentally, this is typically measured from the averaged response of the charges to an electrical potential. High-resolution Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) can image single adsorbed ions and molecules at solid-liquid interfaces, but probing the associated dynamics remains highly challenging. One possible strategy is to investigate the response of the species of interest to a highly localized AC electric field in an approach analogous to dielectric spectroscopy. The dielectric force experienced by the AFM tip apex is modulated by the dielectric properties of the sample probed, itself sensitive to the mobilities of solvated charges and dipoles. Previous work successfully used this approach to quantify the dielectric constant of thin samples, but with limited spatial resolution. Here we propose a strategy to simultaneously map the nanoscale topography and local dielectric variations across a range of interfaces by conducting high-resolution AFM imaging concomitantly with electrical AC measurements in a multifrequency approach. The strategy is tested over a 500 MHz bandwidth in pure liquids with different dielectric constants and in saline aqueous solutions. In liquids with higher dielectric constants, the system behaves as inductive-resistive-capacitive but the adjunction of ions removes the inductive resonances and precludes measurements at higher frequencies. High-resolution imaging is demonstrated over single graphene oxide (GrO) flakes with simultaneous but decoupled dielectric measurements. The dielectric constant is consistent and reproducible across liquids, except at higher salt concentrations where frequency-dependent effects occur. The results suggest the strategy is suitable for nanometre-level mapping of the dielectric properties of solid-liquid interfaces, but more work is needed to fully understand the different physical effects underpinning the measurements.

Tissue-Matchable and Implantable Batteries Toward Biomedical Applications

Implantable electronic devices can realize real-time and reliable health monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of human body, which are expected to overcome important bottlenecks in the biomedical field. However, the commonly used energy supply devices for them are implantable batteries based on conventional rigid device design with toxic components, which both mechanically and biologically mismatch soft biological tissues. Therefore, the development of highly soft, safe, and implantable tissue-matchable flexible batteries is of great significance and urgency for implantable bioelectronics. In this work, the recent advances of tissue-matchable and implantable flexible batteries are overviewed, focusing on the design strategies of electrodes/batteries and their biomedical applications. The mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, and electrochemical performance in vitro and in vivo of these flexible electrodes/batteries are then discussed. Finally, perspectives are provided on the current challenges and possible directions of this field in the future.

Proton/Mg2+ Co-Insertion Chemistry in Aqueous Mg-Ion Batteries: From the Interface to the Inner

Co-insertion of protons happens widely and enables divalent-ion aqueous batteries to achieve high performances. However, detailed investigations and comprehensive understandings of proton co-insertion are scarce. Herein, we demonstrate that proton co-insertion into tunnel materials is determined jointly by interface derivation and inner diffusion: at the interface, hdrated Mg2+ has poor insertion kinetics, and therefore accumulates and hydrolyzes to produce protons; in the tunnels, co-inserted/lattice H2 O molecules block the Mg2+ diffusion while facilitate the proton diffusion. When monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2 (B)) anode is tested in Mg(CH3 COO)2 aqueous solution, the formation of Mg-rich solid electrolyte interphase on the VO2 (B) electrode and co-insertion of derived protons are probed; in the tunnels, the diffusion energy barrier of Mg2+ +H2 O is 2.7 eV, while that of the protons is 0.37 eV. Thus, protons dominate the subsequent insertion and inner diffusion. As a consequence, the VO2 (B) achieves a high capacity of 257.0 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 , a high rate retention of 59.1 % from 1 to 8 A g-1 , and stable cyclability of 3000 times with a capacity retention of 81.5 %. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the proton co-insertion and may promote the development of rechargeable aqueous batteries.

Sand-Fixation Model for Interface Engineering of Layered Titania and N/O-Doped Carbon Composites to Enhance Potassium/Sodium Storage

Layered titania (L-TiO2 ) holds great potential for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacity. Synthesizing L-TiO2 functional materials for high-capacity and long cyclability battery remains challenging due to the unstable and poor conductivity of bare L-TiO2 . In nature, plant growth can stabilize land by preventing sands from dispersing following desertification. Inspired by nature's "sand-fixation model," Al3+ "seeds" are in situ grown on layered Ti3 C2 Tx "land." Subsequently, NH2 -MIL-101(Al) "plants" with Al as metal nodes are grown on the Ti3 C2 Tx "land" by self-assembly. After annealing and etching processes (similar to desertification), NH2 -MIL-101(Al) is transformed into interconnected N/O-doped carbon (MOF-NOC), which not only acts as a plant-like function to prevent the pulverization of L-TiO2 transformed from Ti3 C2 Tx but also improves the conductivity and stability of MOF-NOC@L-TiO2 . Al species are selected as seeds to improve interfacial compatibility and form intimate interface heterojunction. Systematic ex situ analysis discloses that the ions storage mechanism can be endowed by mixed contribution of non-Faradaic and Faradaic capacitance. Consequently, the MOF-NOC@L-TiO2 electrodes exhibit high interfacial capacitive charge storage and outstanding cycling performance. The interface engineering strategy inspired by "sand-fixation model" provides a reference for designing stable layered composites.

Renaissance of elemental phosphorus materials: properties, synthesis, and applications in sustainable energy and environment

The polymorphism of phosphorus-based materials has garnered much research interest, and the variable chemical bonding structures give rise to a variety of micro and nanostructures. Among the different types of materials containing phosphorus, elemental phosphorus materials (EPMs) constitute the foundation for the synthesis of related compounds. EPMs are experiencing a renaissance in the post-graphene era, thanks to recent advancements in the scaling-down of black phosphorus, amorphous red phosphorus, violet phosphorus, and fibrous phosphorus and consequently, diverse classes of low-dimensional sheets, ribbons, and dots of EPMs with intriguing properties have been produced. The nanostructured EPMs featuring tunable bandgaps, moderate carrier mobility, and excellent optical absorption have shown great potential in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. It is thus important to have a good understanding of the differences and interrelationships among diverse EPMs, their intrinsic physical and chemical properties, the synthesis of specific structures, and the selection of suitable nanostructures of EPMs for particular applications. In this comprehensive review, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis and discussion of the fundamental physicochemical properties, synthesis, and applications of EPMs in the areas of energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Our evaluations are based on recent literature on well-established phosphorus allotropes and theoretical predictions of new EPMs. The objective of this review is to enhance our comprehension of the characteristics of EPMs, keep abreast of recent advances, and provide guidance for future research of EPMs in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Green Production of Biomass-Derived Carbon Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with a high energy density have been regarded as a promising energy storage device to harness unstable but clean energy from wind, tide, solar cells, and so on. However, LSBs still suffer from the disadvantages of the notorious shuttle effect of polysulfides and low sulfur utilization, which greatly hider their final commercialization. Biomasses represent green, abundant and renewable resources for the production of carbon materials to address the aforementioned issues by taking advantages of their intrinsic hierarchical porous structures and heteroatom-doping sites, which could attribute to the strong physical and chemical adsorptions as well as excellent catalytic performances of LSBs. Therefore, many efforts have been devoted to improving the performances of biomass-derived carbons from the aspects of exploring new biomass resources, optimizing the pyrolysis method, developing effective modification strategies, or achieving further understanding about their working principles in LSBs. This review firstly introduces the structures and working principles of LSBs and then summarizes recent developments in research on carbon materials employed in LSBs. Particularly, this review focuses on recent progresses in the design, preparation and application of biomass-derived carbons as host or interlayer materials in LSBs. Moreover, outlooks on the future research of LSBs based on biomass-derived carbons are discussed.

Rational design of NiO/NiSe2@C heterostructure as high-performance anode for Li-ion battery

Biphasic or multiphase heterostructures have promising futures in advanced electrode materials for energy-related applications because of their desirable synergistic effects. Here we prepared a rational NiO/NiSe₂@C heterostructure microsphere through carbonization, selenization, and oxidation using Ni-MOF as a precursor. Electrochemical studies were conducted to examine the Li⁺ storage characteristics, and density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to comprehend the underlying mechanism. When employed as the anode for LIBs, the NiO/NiSe₂@C showed a high specific capacity and long-term cyclic stability, with a specific capacity of 992 mAh g^-1 for 600 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g^-1. The NiO/NiSe₂@C exhibits a significantly enhanced lithium-ion diffusion coefficient ( [Formula: see text] ) value. The DFT results show that an electron-rich area forms at the NiO/NiSe₂ heterointerface, where the metalloid selenium transfers electrons to the oxygen atoms. The lithiation reactions were improved dramatically by redistributing interfacial charges, which can trigger a built-in electric field that dramatically promotes the capacitance contribution of electrode materials, enhances the lithium storage capacity, and accelerates the ion/electron transmission. The rational synthesis of NiO/NiSe₂@C heterostructure can provide an idea for designing novel heterostructure anode materials.

Regulating the reduction reaction pathways via manipulating the solvation shell and donor number of the solvent in Li-CO2 chemistry

Transforming CO2 into valuable chemicals is an inevitable trend in our current society. Among the viable end-uses of CO2, fixing CO2 as carbon or carbonates via Li-CO2 chemistry could be an efficient approach, and promising achievements have been obtained in catalyst design in the past. Even so, the critical role of anions/solvents in the formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on cathodes and the solvation structure have never been investigated. Herein, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in two common solvents with various donor numbers (DN) have been introduced as ideal examples. The results indicate that the cells in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-based electrolytes with high DN possess a low proportion of solvent-separated ion pairs and contact ion pairs in electrolyte configuration, which are responsible for fast ion diffusion, high ionic conductivity, and small polarization. The 3 M DMSO cell delivered the lowest polarization of 1.3 V compared to all the tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME)-based cells (about 1.7 V). In addition, the coordination of the O in the TFSI- anion to the central solvated Li+ ion was located at around 2 Å in the concentrated DMSO-based electrolytes, indicating that TFSI- anions could access the primary solvation sheath to form an LiF-rich SEI layer. This deeper understanding of the electrolyte solvent property for SEI formation and buried interface side reactions provides beneficial clues for future Li-CO2 battery development and electrolyte design.

3D Printing of Electron/Ion-Flux Dual-Gradient Anodes for Dendrite-Free Zinc Batteries

3D porous Zn-metal anodes have aroused widespread interest for Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs). Nevertheless, the notorious "top-growth" dendrites caused by the intrinsic top-concentrated ions and randomly distributed electrons may ultimately trigger a cell failure. Herein, an electron/ion-flux dual-gradient 3D porous Zn anode is reported for dendrite-free ZIBs by adopting 3D printing technology. The 3D-printed Zn anode with layer-by-layer bottom-up attenuating Ag nanoparticles (3DP-BU@Zn) establishes dual-gradient electron/ion fluxes, i.e., an internal bottom-up gradient electron flux created by bottom-rich conductive Ag nanoparticles, and a gradient ion flux resulting from zincophilic Ag nanoparticles which pump ions toward the bottom. Meanwhile, the 3D-printing-enabled hierarchical porous structure and continuously conducting network endow unimpeded electron transfer and ion diffusion among the electrode, dominating a bottom-preferential Zn deposition behavior. As a result, the 3DP-BU@Zn symmetrical cell affords highly reversible Zn plating/stripping with an extremely small voltage hysteresis of 17.7 mV and a superior lifespan over 630 h at 1 mA cm^-2 and 1 mAh cm^-2 . Meanwhile, the 3DP-BU@Zn//VO₂ full cell exhibits remarkable cyclic stability over 500 cycles. This unique dual-gradient strategy sheds light on the roadmap for the next-generation safe and durable Zn-metal batteries.

Environmental behavior, human health effect, and pollution control of heavy metal(loid)s toward full life cycle processes

Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) have caused serious environmental pollution and health risks. Although the past few years have witnessed the achievements of studies on environmental behavior of HMs, the related toxicity mechanisms, and pollution control, their relationship remains a mystery. Researchers generally focused on one topic independently without comprehensive considerations due to the knowledge gap between environmental science and human health. Indeed, the full life cycle control of HMs is crucial and should be reconsidered with the combination of the occurrence, transport, and fate of HMs in the environment. Therefore, we started by reviewing the environmental behaviors of HMs which are affected by a variety of natural factors as well as their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the related toxicity mechanisms were discussed according to exposure route, toxicity mechanism, and adverse consequences. In addition, the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for pollution control of HMs wastewater and solid wastes were summarized. Finally, based on the research trend, we proposed that advanced in-operando characterizations will help us better understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms, and big data analysis approaches will aid in establishing the prediction model for risk management.

Carbon-Encased Mixed-Metal Selenide Rooted with Carbon Nanotubes for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Transition metal-based compounds with high theoretical capacitance and low cost represent one class of promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors. However, their low intrinsic electrical conductivity impedes their capacitive effect and further limits their practical application. Rational regulation of their composition and structure is, therefore, necessary to achieve a high electrode performance. Herein, a well-designed carbon-encased mixed-metal selenide rooted with carbon nanotubes (Ni-Co-Se@C-CNT) was derived from nickel–cobalt bimetallic organic frameworks. Due to the unique porous structure, the synergistic effect of bimetal selenides and the in situ growth of carbon nanotubes, the composite exhibits good electrical conductivity, high structural stability and abundant redox active sites. Benefitting from these merits, the Ni-Co-Se@C-CNT exhibited a high specific capacity of 554.1 C g−1 (1108.2 F g−1) at 1 A g−1 and a superior cycling performance, i.e., 96.4% of the initial capacity was retained after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor assembled with Ni-Co-Se@C-CNT cathode and activated carbon (AC) anode shows a superior energy density of 38.2 Wh kg−1 at 1602.1 W kg−1.

Unlocking the High Capacity Ammonium-Ion Storage in Defective Vanadium Dioxide

Aqueous ammonium-ion storage has been considered a promising energy storage competitor to meet the requirements of safety, affordability, and sustainability. However, ammonium-ion storage is still in its infancy in the absence of reliable electrode materials. Here, defective VO₂ (d-VO) is employed as an anode material for ammonium-ion batteries with a moderate transport pathway and high reversible capacity of ≈200 mAh g^-1 . Notably, an anisotropic or anisotropic behavior of structural change of d-VO between c-axis and ab planes depends on the state of charge (SOC). Compared with potassium-ion storage, ammonium-ion storage delivers a higher diffusion coefficient and better electrochemical performance. A full cell is further fabricated by d-VO anode and MnO₂ cathode, which delivers a high energy density of 96 Wh kg^-1 (based on the mass of VO₂ ), and a peak energy density of 3254 W kg^-1 . In addition, capacity retention of 70% can be obtained after 10 000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g^-1 . What's more, the resultant quasi-solid-state MnO₂ //d-VO full cell based on hydrogel electrolyte also delivers high safety and decent electrochemical performance. This work will broaden the potential applications of the ammonium-ion battery for sustainable energy storage.

Molecular structure design of planar zwitterionic polymer electrode materials for all-organic symmetric batteries

All-organic symmetric lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) show promising prospects in sustainable energy storage systems, due to their environmental friendliness, structural diversity and low cost. Nevertheless, it remains a great challenge to explore suitable electrode materials and achieve excellent battery performance for all-organic symmetric LIBs. Herein, a squaraine-anthraquinone polymer (PSQ) electrode material was designed through rational molecular engineering. The well-designed extended π-conjugated system, donor-acceptor structure, abundant redox-active sites and rational manipulation of weak inter-/intramolecular interactions endow the PSQ electrode with outstanding electrochemical performance. The capacity of the PSQ cathode can be optimized to 311.5 mA h g-1 by in situ carbon-template polymerization. Impressively, PSQ-based all-organic symmetric LIBs displayed high reversible capacity (170.8 mA h g-1 at 50 mA g-1), excellent rate performance (64.9% capacity retention at 4000 mA g-1 vs. 50 mA g-1), ultralong cycle life up to 30 000 cycles at 2000 mA g-1 and 97% capacity retention after 2500 cycles at 500 mA g-1, which is one of the best comprehensive battery performances among the all-organic LIBs reported thus far.

Facet-Controlled LiMn2O4/C as Deionization Electrode with Enhanced Stability and High Desalination Performance

HIGHLIGHTS

First report of a lithium-ion battery cathode as a deionization electrode for desalination. A novel approach to suppress manganese dissolution by exposing the (111) facet is proposed. Excellent desalination performance by the LiMn₂O₄/C cathode. The material achieves an ultrahigh desalination capacity of 117.3 mg g⁻¹ at 1.0 V and a longer cycle life (200 cycles without capacity decay) with minor manganese dissolution during the cycling test in 10 mM aqueous LiCl solution.

ABSTRACT

Battery materials as emerging capacitive deionization electrodes for desalination have better salt removal capacities than traditional carbon-based materials. LiMn₂O₄, a widely used cathode material, is difficult to utilize as a deionization electrode due to its structural instability upon cycling and Mn dissolution in aqueous-based electrolytes. Herein, a facile and low-cost ball-milling routine was proposed to prepare a LiMn₂O₄ material with highly exposed (111) facets. The prepared electrode exhibited relatively low dissolution of Mn during cycling, which shows its long cycle stability. In the hybrid capacitive deionization system, the LiMn₂O₄/C electrode delivered a high desalination capacity of 117.3 mg g⁻¹ without obvious capacity decay at a voltage of 1.0 V with a 20 mM initial salt concentration. In addition, the exposed (111) facets significantly alleviated Mn ion dissolution, which also enhanced the structural steadiness. [Image: see text]

Ion Substitution Strategy of Manganese-Based Layered Oxide Cathodes for Advanced and Low-Cost Sodium Ion Batteries

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have recently been promising in the large-scale electric energy storage system, due to the low cost, abundant sodium resources. Mn-based layered oxide cathode materials have been widely investigated, because of the high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and abundant reserves. However, their development is limited by the problems of Jahn-Teller distortion, Na⁺ /vacancy ordering, complex phase transitions, and irreversible anionic redox during cycling. Ion substitution strategy is one simple and effective way to regulate the crystal structure and boost sodium-storage performances of Mn-based cathode materials. In this review, we summarize the progress and mechanism of ion-substituted Mn-based oxides, establish a composition-crystal structure-electrochemical performance relationship, and also offer perspectives for guiding the design of high-performance Mn-based oxides for SIBs.
