Nanostructured Metallic Glass in a Highly Upgraded Energy State Contributing to Efficient Catalytic Performance

Recent Advances in and Challenges with Fe-Based Metallic Glasses for Catalytic Efficiency: Environment and Energy Fields

Metallic glass is being gradually recognized for its unique disordered atomic configuration and excellent catalytic activity, so is of great significance in the field of catalysis. Recent reports have demonstrated that Fe-based metallic glass, as a competitive new catalyst, has good catalytic activity for the fields of environment and energy, including high catalytic efficiency and stability. This review introduces the latest developments in metallic glasses with various atomic components and their excellent catalytic properties as catalysts. In this article, the influence of Fe-based metallic glass catalysts on the catalytic activity of dye wastewater treatment and water-splitting is discussed. The catalytic performance in different atomic composition systems and different water environment systems, and the preparation parameters to improve the surface activity of catalysts, are reviewed. This review also describes several prospects in the future development and practical application of Fe-based metallic glass catalysts and provides a new reference for the synthesis of novel catalysts.

Layered High-Entropy Metallic Glasses for Photothermal CO2 Methanation

High entropy alloys and metallic glasses, as two typical metastable nanomaterials, have attracted tremendous interest in energy conversion catalysis due to their high reactivity in nonequilibrium states. Herein, a novel nanomaterial, layered high entropy metallic glass (HEMG), in a higher energy state than low-entropy alloys and its crystalline counterpart due to both the disordered elemental and structural arrangements, is synthesized. Specifically, the MnNiZrRuCe HEMG exhibits highly enhanced photothermal catalytic activity and long-term stability. An unprecedented CO2 methanation rate of 489 mmol g-1 h-1 at 330 °C is achieved, which is, to the authors' knowledge, the highest photothermal CO2 methanation rate in flow reactors. The remarkable activity originates from the abundant free volume and high internal energy state of HEMG, which lead to the extraordinary heterolytic H2 dissociation capacity. The high-entropy effect also ensures the excellent stability of HEMG for up to 450 h. This work not only provides a new perspective on the catalytic mechanism of HEMG, but also sheds light on the great catalytic potential in future carbon-negative industry.

Modulation Strategies for the Preparation of High-Performance Catalysts for Urea Oxidation Reaction and Their Applications

Compared with the traditional electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen, urea-assisted electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen has significant advantages and has received extensive attention from researchers. Unfortunately, urea oxidation reaction (UOR) involves a complex six-electron transfer process leading to high overpotential, which forces researchers to develop high-performance UOR catalysts to drive the development of urea-assisted water splitting. Based on the UOR mechanism and extensive literature research, this review summarizes the strategies for preparing highly efficient UOR catalysts. First, the UOR mechanism is introduced and the characteristics of excellent UOR catalysts are pointed out. Aiming at this, the following modulation strategies are proposed to improve the catalytic performance based on summarizing various literature: 1) Accelerating the active phase formation to reduce initial potential; 2) Creating double active sites to trigger a new UOR mechanism; 3) Accelerating urea adsorption and promoting C─N bond cleavage to ensure the effective conduct of UOR; 4) Promoting the desorption of CO2 to improve stability and prevent catalyst poisoning; 5) Promoting electron transfer to overcome the inherent slow dynamics of UOR; 6) Increasing active sites or active surface area. Then, the application of UOR in electrochemical devices is summarized. Finally, the current deficiencies and future directions are discussed.

Nanoscale Oxygenous Heterogeneity in FePC Glass for Highly Efficient and Reusable Catalytic Performance

Metallic glass, with its unique disordered atomic structure and high density of low-coordination sites, is regarded as the most competitive new catalyst for environmental catalysis. However, the efficiency and stability of metallic glass catalysts are often affected by their atomic configuration. Thus, the design and regulation of the nanoscale structure of metallic glasses to improve their catalytic efficiency and stability remains a challenge. Herein, a non-noble component, Fe75 P15 C10 amorphous ribbon, is used as a precursor to fabricate a hierarchical gradient catalyst with nanoscale heterogeneous and oxygenous amorphous structure by simple annealing and acid-immersing. The resulting catalyst offers an ultrahigh catalytic ability of kSA• C0 = 3101 mg m-2  min-1 and excellent reusability of 39 times without efficiency decay in dye wastewater degradation. Theoretical calculations indicate that the excellent catalytic performance of the catalyst can be attributed to its unique heterogeneous nanoglass structure, which induces oxygen atoms. Compared to the FePC structure, the FeP/FePCO structure exhibits strong charge transferability, and the energy barrier of the rate-determining steps of the conversion of S2 O8 2- to SO4 -• is reduced from 2.52 to 0.97 eV. This study reveals that a heterogeneous nanoglass structure is a new strategy for obtaining high catalytic performance.

Boosting urea electrooxidation on oxyanion-engineered nickel sites via inhibited water oxidation

Renewable energy-based electrocatalytic oxidation of organic nucleophiles (e.g.methanol, urea, and amine) are more thermodynamically favourable and, economically attractive to replace conventional pure water electrooxidation in electrolyser to produce hydrogen. However, it is challenging due to the competitive oxygen evolution reaction under a high current density (e.g., >300 mA cm-2), which reduces the anode electrocatalyst's activity and stability. Herein, taking lower energy cost urea electrooxidation reaction as the model reaction, we developed oxyanion-engineered Nickel catalysts to inhibit competing oxygen evolution reaction during urea oxidation reaction, achieving an ultrahigh 323.4 mA cm-2 current density at 1.65 V with 99.3 ± 0.4% selectivity of N-products. In situ spectra studies reveal that such in situ generated oxyanions not only inhibit OH- adsorption and guarantee high coverage of urea reactant on active sites to avoid oxygen evolution reaction, but also accelerate urea's C - N bond cleavage to form CNO - intermediates for facilitating urea oxidation reaction. Accordingly, a comprehensive mechanism for competitive adsorption behaviour between OH- and urea to boost urea electrooxidation and dynamic change of Ni active sites during urea oxidation reaction was proposed. This work presents a feasible route for high-efficiency urea electrooxidation reaction and even various electrooxidation reactions in practical applications.

Synthesis of Free-Standing Pd-Ni-P Metallic Glass Nanoparticles with Durable Medium-Range Ordered Structure for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Properties

Topologically disordered metallic glass nanoparticles (MGNPs) with highly active and tailorable surface chemistries have immense potential for functional uses. The synthesis of free-standing MGNPs is crucial and intensively pursued because their activity strongly depends on their exposed surfaces. Herein, a novel laser-evaporated inert-gas condensation method is designed and successfully developed for synthesizing free-standing MGNPs without substrates or capping agents, which is implemented via pulse laser-induced atomic vapor deposition under an inert helium atmosphere. In this way, the metallic atoms vaporized from the targets collide with helium atoms and then condense into short-range-order (SRO) clusters, which mutually assemble to form the MGNPs. Using this method, free-standing Pd40 Ni40 P20 MGNPs with a spherical morphology are synthesized, which demonstrates satisfactory electrocatalytic activity and durability in oxygen reduction reactions. Moreover, local structure investigations using synchrotron pair distribution function techniques reveal the transformation of SRO cluster connection motifs of the MGNPs from face-sharing to edge-sharing modes during cyclic voltammetry cycles, which enhances the electrochemical stability by blocking crystallization. This approach provides a general strategy for preparing free-standing MGNPs with high surface activities, which may have widespread functional applications.

Direct Urea/H2O2 Fuel Cell with a Hierarchical Porous Nanoglass Anode for High-Efficiency Energy Conversion

Direct urea/H₂O₂ fuel cells (DUFCs) constitute a sustainable bifunctional energy conversion technique devoted to simultaneously eliminating environmental wastewater with urea and generating clean energy. However, exploring an efficient anode material for DUFCs still remains a huge challenge. In this work, a Ni-P hierarchical porous nanoglass (HPNG) catalytic electrode was developed via a low-cost, industrially available electrodeposition technique, which exhibits one of the best performances reported so far in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a potential of 1.330 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 9.77 mV dec^-1. The superior UOR performance of the HPNG electrode is attributed to the excellent intrinsic catalytic activity of NG with a high-energy state and an extremely enlarged surface area from the unique 3D hierarchical porous structure. Furthermore, a DUFC system with the HPNG anode shows a performance breakthrough as indicated by the maximum power density of 38.15 mW cm^-2 for 0.5 M urea, representing one of the best yet reported DUFCs. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of the scalable production of HPNG electrodes and is expected to be a great contribution to the development of the practical use of DUFCs in the near future for bifunctional energy conversion.

Crystallization Kinetics Analysis of the Binary Amorphous Mg72Zn28 Alloy

The aim of the study was to analyze the crystallization kinetics of the Mg₇₂Zn₂₈ metallic glass alloy. The crystallization kinetics of Mg₇₂Zn₂₈ metallic glass were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The phases formed during the crystallization process were identified as α-Mg and complex Mg₁₂Zn₁₃ phases. Activation energies for the glass transition temperature, crystallization onset, and peak were calculated based on the Kissinger model. The activation energy calculated from the Kissinger model was E_g = 176.91, E_x = 124.26, E_p1 = 117.49, and E_p2 = 114.48 kJ mol^-1, respectively.

Unconventional Phase Synergies with Doping Engineering Over Ni Electrocatalyst Featuring Regulated Electronic State for Accelerated Urea Oxidation

Exploring high-performing Ni-based electrocatalysts for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is crucial for developing urea-related energy technologies yet remains a daunting challenge. In this study, a synergistic anomalous hcp phase and heteroatom doping engineering over metallic Ni are found to enhance the UOR. A metal-organic framework-mediated approach is proposed to construct Ni nanoparticles (NPs) with designated crystal phase embedded in N-doped carbon (fcc-Ni/NC and hcp-Ni/NC). Significant crystal phase-dependent catalytic activity for the UOR is observed; hcp-Ni/NC, featuring unusual hcp phase, outperforms fcc-Ni/NC with conventional fcc phase. Moreover, incorporating foreign Mn species in hcp-Ni/NC can further dramatically promote UOR, making it among the best UOR catalysts reported to date. From experimental results and DFT calculations, the specific nanoarchitecture, involving an anomalous hcp phase together with Mn doping engineering, endows hcp-MnNi/NC with abundant exposed active sites, facile charge transfer, and more significantly, optimized electronic state, giving rise to enriched Ni³⁺ active species and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface during electrocatalysis. These features collectively contribute to the enhanced UOR activity. This work highlights a potent design strategy to develop advanced catalysts with regulated electronic state through synergistic crystal phase and doping engineering.
