A Euryhaline-Fish-Inspired Salinity Self-Adaptive Nanofluidic Diode Leads to High-Performance Blue Energy Harvesters

Stimuli-Responsive Ion Transport Regulation in Nanochannels by Adhesion-Induced Functionalization of Macroscopic Outer Surface

Responsive regulation of ion transport through nanochannels is crucial in the design of smart nanofluidic devices for sequencing, sensing, and water-energy nexus. Functionalization of the inner wall of the nanochannel enhances interaction with ions and fluid but restricts versatile chemical approaches and accurate characterizations of fluidic interfaces. Herein, we reveal a responsive regulating mechanism of ion transport through nanochannels by polydopamine (PDA)-induced functionalization on the macroscopic outer surface of nanochannels. Responsive molecules were codeposited with PDA on the outer surface of nanochannels and formed a valve of nanometer thickness to manually manipulate ion transport by changing its gap spacing, surface charge, and wettability under external stimulus. The response ratio can be up to 100-fold by maximizing the proportion of responsive molecules on the outer surface. Laminating the codepositions of different responsive molecules with PDA on the channel's outer surface produces multiple responses. A nearly universal adhesion of PDA with responsive molecules on the open outer surface induces nanochannels responsive to different external stimuli with variable response ratios and arbitrary combinations. The results challenge the primary role of functionalization on the nanoconfined interface of nanofluidics and open opportunities for developing new-style nanofluidic devices through the functionalization of macroscopic interface.

Optimizing Nanofluidic Energy Harvesting in Synthetic Clay-based Membranes by Annealing Treatment

Nanofluidic energy harvesting from salinity gradients is studied in 2D nanomaterials-based membranes with promising performance as high ion selectivity and fast ion transport. In addition, moving forward to scalable, feasible systems requires environmentally friendly materials to make the application sustainable. Clay-based membranes are attractive for being environmentally friendly, non-hazardous, and easy to manipulate materials. However, achieving underwater stability for clay-based membranes remains challenging. In this work, the synthetic clay Laponite is used to prepare clay-based membranes with high stability and excellent performance for osmotic energy harvesting. The Laponite membranes (Lap-membranes) are stabilized by low-temperature annealing treatment to effectively reduce the interlayer space, achieving a continuous operation under salinity gradients. Furthermore, the Lap-membranes conserve integrity while soaking in water for more than one month. The output power density improves from ≈4.97 W m-2 on the pristine membrane to ≈9.89 W m-2 in the membrane treated 12 h at 300 °C from a 30-fold concentration gradient. Especially, It is found that the presence of interlayer water to be favorable for ion transport. Different mechanisms are proposed in the Lap-membranes involved for efficient ion selectivity and the states found with varying annealing temperatures. This work demonstrates the potential application of Laponite based nanomaterials for nanofluidic energy harvesting.

TRPM4-Inspired Polymeric Nanochannels with Preferential Cation Transport for High-Efficiency Salinity-Gradient Energy Conversion

Biological ion channels exhibit switchable cation transport with ultrahigh selectivity for efficient energy conversion, such as Ca2+-activated TRPM4 channels tuned by cation-π interactions, but achieving an analogous highly selective function is challenging in artificial nanochannels. Here, we design a TRPM4-inspired cation-selective nanochannel (CN) assembled by two poly(ether sulfone)s, respectively, with sulfonate acid and indole moieties, which act as cation-selective activators to manage Na+/Cl- selectivity via ionic and cation-π interactions. The cation selectivity of CNs can be activated by Na+, and thereby the Na+ transference number significantly improves from 0.720 to 0.982 (Na+/Cl- selectivity ratio from 2.6 to 54.6) under a 50-fold salinity gradient, surpassing the K+ transference number (0.886) and Li+ transference number (0.900). The TRPM4-inspired nanochannel membrane enabled a maximum output power density of 5.7 W m-2 for salinity-gradient power harvesting. Moreover, a record energy conversion efficiency of up to 46.5% is provided, superior to most nanochannel membranes (below 30%). This work proposes a novel strategy to biomimetic nanochannels for highly selective cation transport and high-efficiency salinity-gradient energy conversion.

Enhancing Sustainable Energy Conversion Efficiency by Incorporating Photoelectric Responsiveness into Multiporous Ionic Membrane

The evolution of porous membranes has revitalized their potential application in sustainable osmotic-energy conversion. However, the performance of multiporous membranes deviates significantly from the linear extrapolation of single-pore membranes, primarily due to the occurrence of ion-concentration polarization (ICP). This study proposes a robust strategy to overcome this challenge by incorporating photoelectric responsiveness into permselective membranes. By introducing light-induced electric fields within the membrane, the transport of ions is accelerated, leading to a reduction in the diffusion boundary layer and effectively mitigating the detrimental effects of ICP. The developed photoelectric-responsive covalent-organic-framework membranes exhibit an impressive output power density of 69.6 W m-2 under illumination, surpassing the commercial viability threshold by ≈14-fold. This research uncovers a previously unexplored benefit of integrating optical electric conversion with reverse electrodialysis, thereby enhancing energy conversion efficiency.

Advances in Two-Dimensional Ion-Selective Membranes: Bridging Nanoscale Insights to Industrial-Scale Salinity Gradient Energy Harvesting

Salinity gradient energy, often referred to as the Gibbs free energy difference between saltwater and freshwater, is recognized as "blue energy" due to its inherent cleanliness, renewability, and continuous availability. Reverse electrodialysis (RED), relying on ion-selective membranes, stands as one of the most prevalent and promising methods for harnessing salinity gradient energy to generate electricity. Nevertheless, conventional RED membranes face challenges such as insufficient ion selectivity and transport rates and the difficulty of achieving the minimum commercial energy density threshold of 5 W/m2. In contrast, two-dimensional nanostructured materials, featuring nanoscale channels and abundant functional groups, offer a breakthrough by facilitating rapid ion transport and heightened selectivity. This comprehensive review delves into the mechanisms of osmotic power generation within a single nanopore and nanochannel, exploring optimal nanopore dimensions and nanochannel lengths. We subsequently examine the current landscape of power generation using two-dimensional nanostructured materials in laboratory-scale settings across various test areas. Furthermore, we address the notable decline in power density observed as test areas expand and propose essential criteria for the industrialization of two-dimensional ion-selective membranes. The review concludes with a forward-looking perspective, outlining future research directions, including scalable membrane fabrication, enhanced environmental adaptability, and integration into multiple industries. This review aims to bridge the gap between previous laboratory-scale investigations of two-dimensional ion-selective membranes in salinity gradient energy conversion and their potential large-scale industrial applications.

Interfacial Super-Assembly of Vacancy Engineered Ultrathin-Nanosheets Toward Nanochannels for Smart Ion Transport and Salinity Gradient Power Conversion

Ion-selective nanochannel membranes assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets hold immense promise for power conversion using salinity gradient. However, they face challenges stemming from insufficient surface charge density, which impairs both permselectivity and durability. Herein, we present a novel vacancy-engineered, oxygen-deficient NiCo layered double hydroxide (NiCoLDH)/cellulose nanofibers-wrapped carbon nanotubes (VOLDH/CNF-CNT) composite membrane. This membrane, featuring abundant angstrom-scale, cation-selective nanochannels, is designed and fabricated through a synergistic combination of vacancy engineering and interfacial super-assembly. The composite membrane shows interlayer free-spacing of ~3.62 Å, which validates the membrane size exclusion selectivity. This strategy, validated by DFT calculations and experimental data, improves hydrophilicity and surface charge density, leading to the strong interaction with K+ ions to benefit the low ion transport resistance and exceptional charge selectivity. When employed in an artificial river water|seawater salinity gradient power generator, it delivers a high-power density of 5.35 W/m2 with long-term durability (20,000s), which is almost 400 % higher than that of the pristine NiCoLDH membrane. Furthermore, it displays both pH- and temperature-sensitive ion transport behavior, offering additional opportunities for optimization. This work establishes a basis for high-performance salinity gradient power conversion and underscores the potential of vacancy engineering and super-assembly in customizing 2D nanomaterials for diverse advanced nanofluidic energy devices.

Scalable Fabrication of Ionic-Conductive Covalent Organic Framework Fibers for Capturing of Sustainable Osmotic Energy

High-performance covalent organic framework (COF) fibers are demanded for an efficient capturing of blue osmotic power because of their excellent durability, simple integration, and large scalability. However, the scalable production of COF fibers is still very challenging due to the poor solubility and fragile structure of COFs. Herein, for the first time, it is reported that COF dispersions can be continuously processed into macroscopic, meter-long, and pure COF fibers using a wet spinning approach. The two presented COF fibers can be directly used for capturing of osmotic energy, avoiding the production of composite materials that require other additives and face challenges such as phase separation and environmental issues induced by the additives. A COF fiber exhibits power densities of 70.2 and 185.3 W m-2 at 50-fold and 500-fold salt gradients, respectively. These values outperform those of most reported systems, which indicate the high potential of COF fibers for capturing of blue osmotic energy.

Charge-Gradient Sulfonated Poly(ether ether ketone) Membrane with Enhanced Ion Selectivity for Osmotic Energy Conversion

Engineered asymmetric heterogeneous ion-selective membranes have become a focal point for their improved efficiency in harnessing osmotic energy from ionic solutions with varying salinity. However, achieving both energy conversion efficiency and excellent chemical stability necessitates effectively mitigating the formation of detrimental interface cracks between two different layers. We develop a charge-gradient sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane (CG-SPEEK) on a large-scale using a straightforward coating method. As an osmotic energy generator, CG-SPEEK membrane achieves an impressive output power density of 9.2 W m-2 and exhibits ultrahigh cation selectivity (0.99), with an energy conversion efficiency of 48% at a 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient. The results highlight the ion diode effects of CG-SPEEK, driven by a charge density gradient that accelerates cation transport while suppressing ion concentration polarization. Density functional theory simulations provide further insights, revealing that the energy barrier for Na+ ion transport through CG-SPEEK membrane is lower than that through a homogeneous SPEEK membrane. This work not only enhances our understanding of ion transport dynamics but also establishes the CG-SPEEK membrane as a promising candidate for efficient osmotic energy conversion applications.

Bioinspired 3D flexible devices and functional systems

Flexible devices and functional systems with elaborated three-dimensional (3D) architectures can endow better mechanical/electrical performances, more design freedom, and unique functionalities, when compared to their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts. Such 3D flexible devices/systems are rapidly evolving in three primary directions, including the miniaturization, the increasingly merged physical/artificial intelligence and the enhanced adaptability and capabilities of heterogeneous integration. Intractable challenges exist in this emerging research area, such as relatively poor controllability in the locomotion of soft robotic systems, mismatch of bioelectronic interfaces, and signal coupling in multi-parameter sensing. By virtue of long-time-optimized materials, structures and processes, natural organisms provide rich sources of inspiration to address these challenges, enabling the design and manufacture of many bioinspired 3D flexible devices/systems. In this Review, we focus on bioinspired 3D flexible devices and functional systems, and summarize their representative design concepts, manufacturing methods, principles of structure-function relationship and broad-ranging applications. Discussions on existing challenges, potential solutions and future opportunities are also provided to usher in further research efforts toward realizing bioinspired 3D flexible devices/systems with precisely programmed shapes, enhanced mechanical/electrical performances, and high-level physical/artificial intelligence.

Hydrovoltaic Electricity Generator with Hygroscopic Materials: A Review and New Perspective

The global energy crisis caused by the overconsumption of nonrenewable fuels has prompted researchers to develop alternative strategies for producing electrical energy. In this review, a fascinating strategy that simply utilizes water, an abundant natural substance throughout the globe and even in air as moisture, as a power source is introduced. The concept of the hydrovoltaic electricity generator (HEG) proposed herein involves generating an electrical potential gradient by exposing the two ends of the HEG device to dissimilar physicochemical environments, which leads to the production of an electrical current through the active material. HEGs, with a large variety of viable active materials, have much potential for expansion toward diverse applications including permanent and/or emergency power sources. In this review, representative HEGs that generate electricity by the mechanisms of diffusion, streaming, and capacitance as case studies for building a fundamental understanding of the electricity generation process are discussed. In particular, by comparing the use and absence of hygroscopic materials, HEG mechanism studies to establish active material design principles are meticulously elucidated. The review with future perspectives on electrode design using conducting nanomaterials, considerations for high performance device construction, and potential impacts of the HEG technology in improving the livelihoods are reviewed.

Ultrathin H-MXM as An "Ion Freeway" for High-Performance Osmotic Energy Conversion

Nanofluidic membranes are currently being explored as potential candidates for osmotic energy harvesting. However, the development of high-performance nanofluidic membranes remains a challenge. In this study, the ultrathin MXene membrane (H-MXM) is prepared by ultrathin slicing and realize the ion horizontal transportation. The H-MXM membrane, with a thickness of only 3 µm and straight subnanometer channels, exhibits ultrafast ion transport capabilities resembling an "ion freeway". By mixing artificial seawater and river water, a power output of 93.6 W m-2 is obtained. Just as cell membranes have an ultrathin thickness that allows for excellent penetration, this straight nanofluidic membrane also possesses an ultrathin structure. This unique feature helps to shorten the ion transport path, leading to an increased ion transport rate and improveS performance in osmotic energy conversion.

Nano-Confined Effect and Heterojunction Promoted Exciton Separation for Light-Boosted Osmotic Energy Conversion

The osmotic energy conversion properties of biomimetic light-stimulated nanochannels have aroused great interest. However, the power output performance is limited by the low light-induced current and energy conversion efficiency. Here, nanochannel arrays with simultaneous modification of ZnO and di-tetrabutylammonium cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,20-bipyridyl-4,40-dicarboxylato) ruthenium (II) (N719) onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) to combine the nano-confined effect and heterojunction is designed, which demonstrate rectified ion transport behavior due to the asymmetric composition, structure and charge. High cation selectivity and ion flux contribute to the high power density of ≈7.33 W m-2 by mixing artificial seawater and river water. Under light irradiation, heterojunction promoted the production and separation of exciton, enhanced cation selectivity, and improved the utilization efficiency of osmotic energy, providing a remarkable power density of ≈18.49 W m-2 with an increase of 252% and total energy conversion efficiency of 30.43%. The work opens new insights into the biomimetic nanochannels for high-performance energy conversion.

High Strength MXene/PBONF Heterogeneous Membrane with Excellent Ion Selectivity for Efficient Osmotic Energy Conversion

Layered MXene nanofluidic membranes still face the problems of low mechanical property, poor ion selectivity, and low output power density. In this work, we successfully constructed heterostructured membranes with the combination of the layered channels of the MXene layer on the top and the nanoscale poly(p-phenylene-benzodioxazole) nanofiber (PBONF) layer on the bottom through a stepwise filtration method. The as-prepared MXene/PBONF-50 heterogeneous membrane exhibits high mechanical properties (strength of 221.6 MPa, strain of 3.2%), high ion selectivity of 0.87, and an excellent output power density of 15.7 W/m2 at 50-fold concentration gradient. Excitingly, the heterogeneous membrane presents a high power density of 6.8 W/m2 at a larger testing area of 0.79 mm2 and long-term stability. This heterogeneous membrane construction provides a viable strategy for the enhancement of mechanical properties and osmotic energy conversion of 2D materials.

Ion-Diode-Like Heterojunction for Improving Electricity Generation from Water Droplets by Capillary Infiltration

Water-droplet-based electricity generators are emerging hydrovoltaic technologies that harvest energy from water circulation through strong interactions between water and nanomaterials. However, such devices exhibit poor current performance owing to their unclear driving force (evaporation or infiltration) and undesirable reverse diffusion current. Herein, a water-droplet-based hydrovoltaic electricity generator induced by capillary infiltration with an asymmetric structure composed of a diode-like heterojunction formed by negatively and positively charged materials is fabricated. This device can generate current densities of 160 and 450 µA cm-2 at room temperature and 65 °C, respectively. The heterojunction achieves a rectification ratio of 12, which effectively suppresses the reverse current caused by concentration differences. This results in an improved charge accumulation of ≈60 mC cm-2 in 1000 s, which is three times the value observed in the control device. When the area of the device is increased to 6 cm2 , the current increases linearly to 1 mA, thus demonstrating the scale-up potential of the generator. It has been proven that the streaming potential originates from capillary infiltration, and the presence of ion rectification. The proposed method of constructing ion-diode-like structures provides a new strategy for improving generator performance.

Interfacial Super-Assembly of Intertwined Nanofibers toward Hybrid Nanochannels for Synergistic Salinity Gradient Power Conversion

Capturing the abundant salinity gradient power into electric power by nanofluidic systems has attracted increasing attention and has shown huge potential to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. However, not only the imbalance between permeability and selectivity but also the poor stability and high cost of traditional membranes limit their scale-up realistic applications. Here, intertwined "soft-hard" nanofibers/tubes are densely super-assembled on the surface of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) to construct a heterogeneous nanochannel membrane, which exhibits smart ion transport and improved salinity gradient power conversion. In this process, one-dimensional (1D) "soft" TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are wrapped around "hard" carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form three-dimensional (3D) dense nanochannel networks, subsequently forming a CNF-CNT/AAO hybrid membrane. The 3D nanochannel networks constructed by this intertwined "soft-hard" nanofiber/tube method can significantly enhance the membrane stability while maintaining the ion selectivity and permeability. Furthermore, benefiting from the asymmetric structure and charge polarity, the hybrid nanofluidic membrane displays a low membrane inner resistance, directional ionic rectification characteristics, outstanding cation selectivity, and excellent salinity gradient power conversion performance with an output power density of 3.3 W/m². Besides, a pH sensitive property of the hybrid membrane is exhibited, and a higher power density of 4.2 W/m² can be achieved at a pH of 11, which is approximately 2 times more compared to that of pure 1D nanomaterial based homogeneous membranes. These results indicate that this interfacial super-assembly strategy can provide a way for large-scale production of nanofluidic devices for various fields including salinity gradient energy harvesting.

Janus Metal-Organic Framework Membranes Boosting the Osmotic Energy Harvesting

The unique ion-transport properties in nanoconfined pores enable nanofluidic devices with great potential in harvesting osmotic energy. The energy conversion performance could be significantly improved by the precise regulation of the "permeability-selectivity" trade-off and the ion concentration polarization effect. Here, we take the advantage of electrodeposition technique to fabricate a Janus metal-organic framework (J-MOF) membrane that possesses rapid ion-transport capability and impeccable ion selectivity. The asymmetric structure and asymmetric surface charge distribution of the J-MOF device can suppress the ion concentration polarization effect and enhance the ion charge separation, exhibiting an improved energy harvesting performance. An output power density of 3.44 W/m² has been achieved with the J-MOF membrane at a 1000-fold concentration gradient. This work provides a new strategy for fabricating high-performance energy-harvesting devices.

Electrodeposited MOFs Membrane with In Situ Incorporation of Charged Molecules for Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Ion-selective membranes are considered as the promising candidates for osmotic energy harvesting. However, the fabrication of highly perm-selective membrane is the major challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with well-defined nanochannels along functional charged groups show great importance to tackle this problem. Here, a series of dense sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) incorporated MOFs composite membranes (PSS@MOFs) on a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane via in situ anodic electrodeposition process are developed. Benefiting to the novel structural design of the confined Ag layer, PSS@MOFs dense composite membrane with less defects formed. The sulfonated nanochannels of the PSS@MOFs composite membrane provided rapid and selective transport of cations due to the enhanced electrostatic interaction between the permeating ions and MOFs. While osmotic energy conversion, 860 nm thick negatively charged PSS@MOFs composite membrane achieves an ultrahigh cation transfer number of 0.993 and energy conversion efficiency of 48.8% at a 100-fold salinity gradient. Moreover, a large output power of 2.90 µW has been achieved with an ultra-low internal resistance of 999 Ω, employing an effective area of 12.56 mm² . This work presents a promising strategy to construct a high-performance MOFs-based osmotic energy harvesting system for practical applications.

An Ionic Diode Covalent Organic Framework Membrane for Efficient Osmotic Energy Conversion

Heterogeneous membranes that exhibit an ionic diode effect are promising candidates for osmotic energy conversion. However, existing heterogeneous membranes lack molecular-level designed ion channels, thereby limiting their power densities. Here, we demonstrate ionic diode covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with well-defined ion channels, asymmetric geometry and surface charge polarity as high-performance osmotic power generators. The COF diode membranes are comprised of heterojunctions combining a positively charged ultrathin COF layer and a negatively charged COF layer supported by a porous COF nanofiber scaffold, exhibiting an ionic diode effect that effectuates fast unidirectional ion diffusion and anion selectivity. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the differentiated interactions between anions and COF channels contributed to superior I^- transport over other anions. Consequently, the COF diode membranes achieved high output power densities of 19.2 and 210.1 W m^-2 under a 50-fold NaCl and NaI gradient, respectively, outperforming state-of-the-art heterogeneous membranes. This work suggests the great potential of COF diode membranes for anion transport and energy-related applications.

Photo-controllable Ion-Gated Metal-Organic Framework MIL-53 Sub-nanochannels for Efficient Osmotic Energy Generation

By closing and opening ion channels, electric eels are able to convert ion concentration gradients into electricity. Inspired by electric eels, considerable artificial sub-nanoscale ion channels with high ion selectivity and transportation efficiency have been designed for harvesting the osmotic energy between ionic solutions of different salinities, but constructing smart ion-gated sub-nanochannels for effective ion transport is still a huge challenge. Herein, photo-controllable sub-nanochannels of metal-organic framework (MOF) NH₂-MIL-53 encapsulated with spiropyrans (SP-MIL-53) were fabricated by a facile in situ growth strategy. Interestingly, the highly ordered sub-nanochannels of SP-MIL-53 were switched on and off to efficiently regulate the ion flux by the light-driven isomerization of SP, which made it a smart ionic gate with a high on-off ratio of 16.2 in 10 mM KCl aqueous solution via UV irradiation. Moreover, the ion-gated sub-nanochannel membrane yielded a high power density of 8.3 W m^-2 under a 50-fold KCl concentration gradient in the open state. Density functional theory calculations revealed that K⁺ ions in SP-MIL-53 sub-nanochannels had a higher mobility constant (3.61 × 10^-2) with UV irradiation than without UV illumination (2.33 × 10^-22). This work provides an effective way to develop smart ion-gating sub-nanochannels for capturing salinity gradient power.
