Radiative Recombination Processes in Halide Perovskites Observed by Light Emission Voltage Modulated Spectroscopy

Efficient Large-Area (81 cm2) Ternary Copper Halides Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 13% via Host-Guest Strategy

Ternary copper (Cu) halides are promising candidates for replacing toxic lead halides in the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) toward practical applications. However, the electroluminescent performance of Cu halide-based LEDs remains a great challenge due to the presence of serious nonradiative recombination and inefficient charge transport in Cu halide emitters. Here, the rational design of host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 (dppb denotes 1,2-bis[diphenylphosphino]benzene) emitters and its utility in fabricating efficient Cu halide-based green LEDs that show a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 13.39% are reported. The host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 emitters with mCP (1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene) host demonstrate a significant improvement of carrier radiative recombination efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum yield increased by nearly ten times, which is rooted in the efficient energy transfer and type-I energy level alignment between [dppb]2Cu2I2 and mCP. Moreover, the charge-transporting mCP host can raise the carrier mobility of [dppb]2Cu2I2 films, thereby enhancing the charge transport and recombination. More importantly, this strategy enables a large-area prototype LED with a record-breaking area up to 81 cm2, along with a decent EQE of 10.02% and uniform luminance. It is believed these results represent an encouraging stepping stone to bring Cu halide-based LEDs from the laboratory toward commercial lighting and display panels.

Ion-Mediated Recombination Dynamics in Perovskite-Based Memory Light-Emitting Diodes for Neuromorphic Control Systems

Neuromorphic devices can help perform memory-heavy tasks more efficiently due to the co-localization of memory and computing. In biological systems, fast dynamics are necessary for rapid communication, while slow dynamics aid in the amplification of signals over noise and regulatory processes such as adaptation- such dual dynamics are key for neuromorphic control systems. Halide perovskites exhibit much more complex phenomena than conventional semiconductors due to their coupled ionic, electronic, and optical properties which result in modulatable drift, diffusion of ions, carriers, and radiative recombination dynamics. This is exploited to engineer a dual-emitter tandem device with the requisite dual slow-fast dynamics. Here, a perovskite-organic tandem light-emitting diode (LED) capable of modulating its emission spectrum and intensity owing to the ion-mediated recombination zone modulation between the green-emitting quasi-2D perovskite layer and the red-emitting organic layer is introduced. Frequency-dependent response and high dynamic range memory of emission intensity and spectra in a LED are demonstrated. Utilizing the emissive read-out, image contrast enhancement as a neuromorphic pre-processing step to improve pattern recognition capabilities is illustrated. As proof of concept using the device's slow-fast dynamics, an inhibition of the return mechanism is physically emulated.

Mn(II)-Activated Zero-Dimensional Zinc(II)-Based Metal Halide Hybrids with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

As derivatives of metal halide perovskite materials, low-dimensional metal halide materials have become important materials that have attracted much attention in recent years. As one branch, zinc-based metal halides have the potential for practical applications due to their lead-free, low-toxicity and high-stability characteristics. However, pure zinc-based metal halide materials are still limited by their poor optical properties and cannot achieve large-scale practical applications. Therefore, in this work, we report an organic-inorganic hybrid zero-dimensional zinc bromide, (TDMP)ZnBr4, using transition metal Mn2+ ions as dopants and incorporating them into the (TDMP)ZnBr4 lattice. The original non-emissive (TDMP)ZnBr4 exhibits bright green emission under the excitation of external UV light after the introduction of Mn2+ ions with a PL peak position located at 538 nm and a PLQY of up to 91.2%. Through the characterization of relevant photophysical properties and the results of theoretical calculations, we confirm that this green emission in Mn2+:(TDMP)ZnBr4 originates from the 4T1 → 6A1 optical transition process of Mn2+ ions in the lattice structure, and the near-unity PLQY benefits from highly localized electrons generated by the unique zero-dimensional structure of the host material (TDMP)ZnBr4. This work provides theoretical guidance and reference for expanding the family of zinc-based metal halide materials and improving and controlling their optical properties through ion doping.
