Pyridinic Nitrogen Sites Dominated Coordinative Engineering of Subnanometric Pd Clusters for Efficient Alkynes' Semihydrogenation

Advancements in Noble Metal-Decorated Porous Carbon Nanoarchitectures: Key Catalysts for Direct Liquid Fuel Cells

Noble-metal nanocrystals have emerged as essential electrode materials for catalytic oxidation of organic small molecule fuels in direct liquid fuel cells (DLFCs). However, for large-scale commercialization of DLFCs, adopting cost-effective techniques and optimizing their structures using advanced matrices are crucial. Notably, noble metal-decorated porous carbon nanoarchitectures exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic performances owing to their three-dimensional cross-linked porous networks, large accessible surface areas, homogeneous dispersion (of noble metals), reliable structural stability, and outstanding electrical conductivity. Consequently, they can be utilized to develop next-generation anode catalysts for DLFCs. Considering the recent expeditious advancements in this field, this comprehensive review provides an overview of the current progress in noble metal-decorated porous carbon nanoarchitectures. This paper meticulously outlines the associated synthetic strategies, precise microstructure regulation techniques, and their application in electrooxidation of small organic molecules. Furthermore, the review highlights the research challenges and future opportunities in this prospective research field, offering valuable insights for both researchers and industry experts.

Mesoporous α-Al2O3-supported PdCu bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst for the selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes

The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is widely applied in the chemical industry; nevertheless, achieving highly selective hydrogenation with high catalytic activity is considerably challenging. Herein, ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al2O3 were prepared by high-temperature calcination-reduction using a porous organic framework (POF) as the template. As-obtained PdCu@α-Al2O3 exhibited a high selectivity of 95% for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a probe reaction under mild reaction conditions. The separation of continuous Pd atoms and modification of the Pd electronic state by Cu atoms suppressed β-hydride formation and alkene adsorption, contributing to high selectivity for the catalytic hydrogenation of alkynes. The catalytic activity was maintained after 7 cycles due to the strong interaction between the PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles and α-Al2O3 as well as the encapsulation effect of mesoporous α-Al2O3. Thus, the current work provides a facile strategy for fabricating high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al2O3-supported catalysts for industrial catalysis applications.

A highly efficient synthetic strategy for de novo NP encapsulation into metal-organic frameworks: enabling further modulated control of catalytic properties

De novo encapsulation is a prevalent method to prepare composite materials where the structure-tunable metal nanoparticles (NPs) are holistically coated with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This method has been demonstrated to have promise in various fields but the extensive application of this approach is still challenging. This study proposed, for the first time, leveraging a specific surface-energy-dominated (SED) mechanism to achieve a highly efficient synthetic strategy for de novo NP encapsulation. The generality of this strategy is proved in applying to various MOFs, reaction conditions and the use of capping agents. By applying the strategy, Pd NPs with different morphologies are encapsulated in UiO-67, which is prone to self-assembly without coating, and an interesting enhancement is investigated in the selective semihydrogenation of alkynes on different Pd surfaces. These results demonstrate that the control of surface energy is a feasible method for efficient NP encapsulation which sheds light on the rational design of MOF-based composites for future applications.

Tailoring the CO2 Hydrogenation Performance of Fe-Based Catalyst via Unique Confinement Effect of the Carbon Shell

Even though Fe-based catalysts have been widely employed for CO2 hydrogenation into hydrocarbons, oxygenates, liquid fuels, etc., the precise regulation of their physicochemical properties is needed to enhance the catalytic performance. Herein, under the guidance of the traditional concept in heterogeneous catalysis-confinement effect, a core-shell structured catalyst Na-Fe3 O4 @C is constructed to boost the CO2 hydrogenation performance. Benefiting from the carbon-chain growth limitation, tailorable H2 /CO2 ratio on the catalytic interface, and unique electronic property that all endowed by the confinement effect, the selectivity and space-time yield of light olefins (C2 = -C4 = ) are as high as 47.4 % and 15.9 g molFe -1  h-1 , respectively, which are all notably higher than that from the shell-less counterpart. The function mechanism of the confinement effect in Fe-based catalysts are clarified in detail by multiple characterization and density functional theory (DFT). This work may offer a new prospect for the rational design of CO2 hydrogenation catalyst.

Enhancing Photocatalytic-Transfer Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes Over Pd/C3 N4 Through Dual Regulation of Nitrogen Defects and the Mott-Schottky Effect

The selective hydrogenation of alkynes is an important reaction; however, the catalytic activity and selectivity in this reaction are generally conflicting. In this study, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on a graphite-like C3 N4 structure with nitrogen defects (Pd/DCN) are synthesized. The resulting Pd/DCN exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance in the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes with ammonia borane. The reaction rate and selectivity of Pd/DCN are superior to those of Pd/BCN (bulk C3 N4 without nitrogen defects) under visible-light irradiation. The characterization results and density functional theory calculations show that the Mott-Schottky effect in Pd/DCN can change the electronic density of the Pd NPs, and thus enhances the hydrogenation selectivity toward phenylacetylene. After 1 h, the hydrogenation selectivity of Pd/DCN reaches 95%, surpassing that of Pd/BCN (83%). Meanwhile, nitrogen defects in the supports improve the visible-light response and accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated charges to enhance the catalytic activity of Pd/DCN. Therefore, Pd/DCN exhibits higher efficiency under visible light, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2002 min-1 . This TOF is five times that of Pd/DCN under dark conditions and 1.5 times that of Pd/BCN. This study provides new insights into the rational design of high-performance photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation catalysts.
