Porous Organic Polymer with Hierarchical Structure and Limited Volume Expansion for Ultrafast and Highly Durable Sodium Storage

Porous Organic Polymers as Active Electrode Materials for Energy Storage Applications

Eco-friendly and efficient energy production and storage technologies are highly demanded to address the environmental and energy crises. Porous organic polymers (POPs) are a class of lightweight porous network materials covalently linked by organic building blocks, possessing high surface areas, tunable pores, and designable components and structures. Due to their unique structural and compositional advantages, POPs have recently emerged as promising electrode materials for energy storage devices, particularly in the realm of supercapacitors and ion batteries. In this work, a comprehensive overview of recent progress and applications of POPs as electrode materials in energy storage devices, including the structural features and synthesis strategies of various POPs, as well as their applications in supercapacitors, lithium batteries, sodium batteries, and potassium batteries are provided. Finally, insights are provided into the future research directions of POPs in electrochemical energy storage technologies. It is anticipated that this work can provide readers with a comprehensive background on the design of POPs-based electrode materials and ignite more research in the development of next-generation energy storage devices.

Rational Design of Naphthol Groups Functionalized Bipolar Polymer Cathodes for High Performance Alkali-Ion Batteries

Redox-active organic compounds gather significant attention for their potential application as electrodes in alkali ion batteries, owing to the structural versatility, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical applications of such compounds are impeded by insufficient active sites with limited capacity, dissolution in electrolytes, and sluggish kinetics. To address these issues, a naphthol group-containing triarylamine polymer, namely poly[6,6'-(phenylazanediyl)bis(naphthol)] (poly(DNap-OH)) is rationally designed and synthesized, via oxidative coupling polymerization. It is capable of endowing favorable steric structures that facilitate fast ion diffusion, excellent chemical stability in organic electrolytes, and additional redox-active sites that enable a bipolar redox reaction. By exploiting these advantages, poly(DNap-OH) cathodes demonstrate remarkable cycling stability in both lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), showcasing enhanced specific capacity and redox reaction kinetics in comparison to the conventional poly(4-methyltriphenylamine) cathodes. Overall, this work offers insights into molecular design strategies for the development of high-performance organic cathodes in alkali-ion batteries.

Design of Linear-Polymer-Coated Graphene Nanosheets with π-Conjugated Structure and Multi-Active-Center for Long-Lifespan and High-Rate Li-Storage Performance

Organic material holds immense potential for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their eco-friendly nature, high structural designability, abundant sources, and high theoretical capacity. However, the limited redox-active sites, low electronic conductivity, sluggish ionic diffusion, and high solubility hinder their practical application. Here, we reported the use of a linear polymer called poly(naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride-pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone)-coated graphene nanosheets (NPT/rGO) as a cathode material for LIBs. The NPT polymer has a rotation angle of approximately 63° between each plane, which helps in exposing the active sites and preventing structural pulverization during cycling. The highly conjugated skeleton of the polymer, along with graphene, forms a synergistic effect through a π-π interaction. This combination enhances the conductivity and restricts solubility. Additionally, the linear structure of NPT and the two-dimensional rGO substrates work together to enhance charge transfer and ion diffusion rates, resulting in faster reaction kinetics. Consequently, NPT/rGO exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity, superior cyclic stability, and good rate capability for LIBs. Moreover, through the combination of experimental investigations and theoretical simulations, a multiple electron reaction mechanism, an efficient Li-ion storage behavior, and a reversible dynamic evolution have been revealed. This study introduces a rational molecular design approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of polyimide derivatives, thereby contributing to the advancement of cutting-edge organic electrode materials for LIBs.

Highly Reversible Sodium-ion Storage in A Bifunctional Nanoreactor Based on Single-atom Mn Supported on N-doped Carbon over MoS2 Nanosheets

Conversion-type electrode materials have gained massive research attention in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), but their limited reversibility hampers practical use. Herein, we report a bifunctional nanoreactor to boost highly reversible sodium-ion storage, wherein a record-high reversible degree of 85.65 % is achieved for MoS2 anodes. Composed of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported single atom Mn (NC-SAMn), this bifunctional nanoreactor concurrently confines active materials spatially and catalyzes reaction kinetics. In situ/ex situ characterizations including spectroscopy, microscopy, and electrochemistry, combined with theoretical simulations containing density functional theory and molecular dynamics, confirm that the NC-SAMn nanoreactors facilitate the electron/ion transfer, promote the distribution and interconnection of discharging products (Na2S/Mo), and reduce the Na2S decomposition barrier. As a result, the nanoreactor-promoted MoS2 anodes exhibit ultra-stable cycling with a capacity retention of 99.86 % after 200 cycles in the full cell. This work demonstrates the superiority of bifunctional nanoreactors with two-dimensional confined and catalytic effects, providing a feasible approach to improve the reversibility for a wide range of conversion-type electrode materials, thereby enhancing the application potential for long-cycled SIBs.

Electropolymerized Bipolar Poly(2,3-diaminophenazine) Cathode for High-Performance Aqueous Al-Ion Batteries with An Extended Temperature Range of -20 to 45 °C

Achieving reversible insertion/extraction in most cathodes for aqueous aluminum ion batteries (AAIBs) is a significant challenge due to the high charge density of Al3+ and strong electrostatic interactions. Organic materials facilitate the hosting of multivalent carriers and rapid ions diffusion through the rearrangement of chemical bonds. Here, a bipolar conjugated poly(2,3-diaminophenazine) (PDAP) on carbon substrates prepared via a straightforward electropolymerization method is introduced as cathode for AAIBs. The integration of n-type and p-type active units endow PDAP with an increased number of sites for ions interaction. The long-range conjugated skeleton enhances electron delocalization and collaborates with carbon to ensure high conductivity. Moreover, the strong intermolecular interactions including π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding significantly enhance its stability. Consequently, the Al//PDAP battery exhibits a large capacity of 338 mAh g-1 with long lifespan and high-rate capability. It consistently demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performances even under extreme conditions with capacities of 155 and 348 mAh g-1 at -20 and 45 °C, respectively. In/ex situ spectroscopy comprehensively elucidates its cation/anion (Al3+/H3O+ and ClO4 -) storage with 3-electron transfer in dual electroactive centers (C═N and -NH-). This study presents a promising strategy for constructing high-performance organic cathode for AAIBs over a wide temperature range.

Constructing π-π Superposition Effect of Tetralithium Naphthalenetetracarboxylate with Electron Delocalization for Robust Dual-Ion Batteries

Organics are gaining significance as electrode materials due to their merits of multi-electron reaction sites, flexible rearrangeable structures and redox reversibility. However, organics encounter finite electronic conductivity and inferior durability especially in organic electrolytes. To circumvent above barriers, we propose a novel design strategy, constructing conductive network structures with extended π-π superposition effect by manipulating intermolecular interaction. Tetralithium 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylate (LNTC) interwoven by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) forms LNTC@CNTs composite firstly for Li-ion storage, where multiple conjugated carboxyls contribute sufficient Li-ion storage sites, the unique network feature enables electrolyte and charge mobility conveniently combining electron delocalization in π-conjugated system, and the enhanced π-π superposition effect between LNTC and CNTs endows laudable structural robustness. Accordingly, LNTC@CNTs maintain an excellent Li-ion storage capacity retention of 96.4 % after 400 cycles. Electrochemical experiments and theoretical simulations elucidate the fast reaction kinetics and reversible Li-ion storage stability owing to the electron delocalization and π-π superposition effect, while conjugated carboxyls are reversibly rearranged into enolates during charging/discharging. Consequently, a dual-ion battery combining this composite anode and expanded graphite cathode exhibits a peak specific capacity of 122 mAh g-1 and long cycling life with a capacity retention of 84.2 % after 900 cycles.

Rationally Designed Cyclooctatetrathiophene-Based Porous Aromatic Frameworks (COTh-PAFs) for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Constructing stable and efficient photocatalysts for H2O2 production is of great importance and is challenging. In this study, the synthesis of three photoactive cyclooctatetrathiophene (COTh)-based porous aromatic frameworks (COTh-PAFs) in an alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) fashion is presented. In combination with a triazine-derived electron acceptor, PAF-363 exhibits high efficiency for the photosynthesis of H2O2 with production rates of 11733 μmol g-1 h-1(with sacrificial agent) and 3930 μmol g-1 h-1 (without sacrificial agent) from water and oxygen under visible light irradiation. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the charge transfer positions and the O2 adsorption sites in PAF-363 are both concentrated on COTh fragments, which facilitate the H2O2 production through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. This work highlights that the rational design of COTh-PAFs with consideration of D-A direction, charge transfer positions, and O2 adsorption sites provides a feasible access to efficient H2O2 production photocatalysts.

A covalent organic framework as a dual-active-center cathode for a high-performance aqueous zinc-ion battery

Organic electrode materials have shown significant potential for aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their flexible structure designability and cost advantage. However, sluggish ionic diffusion, high solubility, and low capacities limit their practical application. Here, we designed a covalent organic framework (TA-PTO-COF) generated by covalently bonding tris(4-formylbiphenyl)amine (TA) and 2,7-diaminopyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO-NH2). The highly conjugated skeleton inside enhances its electron delocalization and intermolecular interaction, leading to high electronic conductivity and limited solubility. The open channel within the TA-PTO-COF provides ionic diffusion pathways for fast reaction kinetics. In addition, the abundant active sites (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N and C[double bond, length as m-dash]O) endow the TA-PTO-COF with a large reversible capacity. As a result, the well-designed TA-PTO-COF cathode delivers exceptional capacity (255 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), excellent cycling stability, and a superior rate capacity of 186 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1. Additionally, the co-insertion mechanism of Zn2+/H+ within the TA-PTO-COF cathode is revealed in depth by ex situ spectroscopy. This study presents an effective strategy for developing high-performance organic cathodes for advanced AZIBs.

The Compatibility of COFs Cathode and Optimized Electrolyte for Ultra-Long Lifetime Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZIBs) are attractive due to their affordability, safety, and eco-friendliness. However, their potential is limited by the lack of high-capacity cathodes and compatible electrolytes needed for reliable performance. Herein, we have presented a compatibility strategy for the development of a durable and long-lasting RAZIBs. The covalent organic frameworks (COFs) based on anthraquinone (DAAQ-COF) is created and utilized as the cathode, with zinc metal serving as the anode. The electrolyte is made up of an aqueous solution containing zinc salts at various concentrations. The COF cathode has been designed to be endowed with a rich array of redox-active groups, enhancing its electrochemical properties. Meanwhile, the electrolyte is formulated using triflate anions, which have exhibited superiority over sulfate anions. This strategy lead to the development of an optimized COF cathode with fast charging capability, high Coulombic efficiency (nearly 100 %) and long-term cyclability (retention rate of nearly 100 % at 1 A g-1 after 10000 cycles). Moreover, through experimental analysis, a co-insertion mechanism involving Zn2+ and H+ in this cathode is discovered for the first time. These findings represent a promising path for the advancement of organic cathode materials in high-performance and sustainable RAZIBs.

Rational Design of Multinary Metal Chalcogenide Bi0.4 Sb1.6 Te3 Nanocrystals for Efficient Potassium Storage

Multinary metal chalcogenides hold considerable promise for high-energy potassium storage due to their numerous redox reactions. However, challenges arise from issues such as volume expansion and sluggish kinetics. Here, a design featuring a layered ternary Bi0.4 Sb1.6 Te3 anchored on graphene layers as a composite anode, where Bi atoms act as a lattice softening agent on Sb, is presented. Benefiting from the lattice arrangement in Bi0.4 Sb1.6 Te3 and structure, Bi0.4 Sb1.6 Te3 /graphene exhibits a mitigated expansion of 28% during the potassiation/depotassiation process and demonstrates facile K+ ion transfer kinetics, enabling long-term durability of 500 cycles at various high rates. Operando synchrotron diffraction patterns and spectroscopies including in situ Raman, ex situ adsorption, and X-ray photoelectron reveal multiple conversion and alloying/dealloying reactions for potassium storage at the atomic level. In addition, both theoretical calculations and electrochemical examinations elucidate the K+ migration pathways and indicate a reduction in energy barriers within Bi0.4 Sb1.6 Te3 /graphene, thereby suggesting enhanced diffusion kinetics for K+ . These findings provide insight in the design of durable high-energy multinary tellurides for potassium storage.

Design of a bipolar organic small-molecule cathode with mesoporous nanospheres structure for long lifespan and high-rate Li-storage performance

Organic small-molecule compounds have become promising cathode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, efficient utilization of active sites, low cost, and sustainability. However, severe dissolution and poor electronic conductivity limit their further practical applications. Herein, we have synthesized an insoluble organic small molecule, ferrocenyl-3-(λ1-azazyl) pyrazinyl [2,3-f] [1,10] phenanthrolino-2-amine (FCPD), by grafting ferrocene onto pyrazino[2,3-f] [1,10] phenanthroline-2,3-diamine (PPD). The combination of ferrocene (p-type Fe2+ moiety) and PPD (n-type C[double bond, length as m-dash]N groups) in a bipolar manner endows the target FCPD cathode with an increased theoretical capacity and a wide voltage window. The highly conjugated π-π aromatic skeleton inside enhances FCPD's electron delocalization and promotes strong interaction between FCPD units. Additionally, the mesoporous structure within the FCPD can provide numerous electroactive sites, contact area, and ion diffusion channels. Benefiting from the bipolar feature, aromatic, and mesoporous structure, the FCPD cathode demonstrates a large capacity of 250 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, a long lifespan of 1000 cycles and a high-rate capability of 151 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 along with a wide voltage window (1.2-3.8 V). Additionally, in situ synchrotron FT-IR and ex situ XPS reveal its dual ion storage mechanism in depth. Our findings provide essential insights into exploring the molecular design of advanced organic small molecules.

Enhancing Sodium-Ion Energy Storage of Commercial Activated Carbon by Constructing Closed Pores via Ball Milling

Mechanical ball milling is a prevalent technology for material preparation and also serves as a post-treatment method to modify electrode materials, thus enhancing electrochemical performances. This study explores the microstructure modification of commercial activated carbon through mechanical ball milling, proving its efficacy in increasing sodium-ion energy storage. The evolution of activated carbon's physical and chemical properties during ball milling was systematically examined. It was observed that the quantity of closed pores and the graphitization degree in activated carbon increased with extended ball milling duration. The sodium storage mechanism in activated carbon transitions to an insertion-pore filling process, significantly elevating platform capacity. Additionally, ball-milled activated carbon demonstrates remarkable long-term cycling stability (92% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 200 mA g-1) and rate performance. This research offers a novel approach to developing advanced anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Hydrated Eutectic Electrolyte Induced Bilayer Interphase for High-Performance Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries with 100 °C Wide-Temperature Range

The practical implementation of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) encounters challenges such as dendrite growth, parasitic reactions, and severe decay in battery performance under harsh environments. Here, a novel hydrated eutectic electrolyte (HEE) composed of Zn(ClO4 )2 ·6H2 O, ethylene glycol (EG), and InCl3 solution is introduced to effectively extend the lifespan of AZIBs over a wide temperature range from -50 to 50 °C. Molecular dynamics simulations and spectroscopy analysis demonstrate that the H2 O molecules are confined within the liquid eutectic network through dual-interaction, involving coordination with Zn2+ and hydrogen bonding with EG, thus weakening the activity of free water and extending the electrochemical window. Importantly, cryo-transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy techniques reveal that HEE in situ forms a zincophobic/zincophilic bilayer interphase by the dissociation-reduction of eutectic molecules. Specifically, the zincophilic interphase reduces the energy barrier for Zn nucleation, promoting uniform Zn deposition, while the zincophobic interphase prevents active water from contacting the Zn surface, thus inhibiting the side reactions. Furthermore, the relationships between the structural evolution of the liquid eutectic network and interfacial chemistry at electrode/electrolyte interphase are further discussed in this work. The scalability of this design strategy can bring benefits to AZIBs operating over a wide temperature range.

Atom-Economical Synthesis of Lewis Acidic Boron Containing Porous Organic Polymers via Hydroboration Polymerization for Basic Chemical Capture

Atom economy is one of the main concerns for material synthesis. Here, the facile synthesis of Lewis acidic boron-containing porous organic polymers (B-POPs) via hydroboration polymerization reaction of commercially available borane dimethyl sulfide complex (BH3 ∙SMe2 ) with multi-alkynes under mild reaction conditions is presented. This new synthetic method for B-POPs has the advantage of high atom economy. The resulted porous alkenyl borane polymers (PABPs) have unique features such as high boron content, strong Lewis acidity, and high surface areas. Owing to the strong Lewis acid-base interactions, PABPs exhibit excellent adsorptive capacity toward triethylamine (up to 841 mg g-1 ) and pyridine (up to 1396 mg g-1 ) vapor.

Single-Atom Zinc Sites with Synergetic Multiple Coordination Shells for Electrochemical H2 O2 Production

Precise manipulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs), particularly the simultaneous engineering of multiple coordination shells, is crucial to maximize their catalytic performance but remains challenging. Herein, we present a general two-step strategy to fabricate a series of hollow carbon-based SACs featuring asymmetric Zn-N2 O2 moieties simultaneously modulated with S atoms in higher coordination shells of Zn centers (n≥2; designated as Zn-N2 O2 -S). Systematic analyses demonstrate that the synergetic effects between the N2 O2 species in the first coordination shell and the S atoms in higher coordination shells lead to robust discrete Zn sites with the optimal electronic structure for selective O2 reduction to H2 O2 . Remarkably, the Zn-N2 O2 moiety with S atoms in the second coordination shell possesses a nearly ideal Gibbs free energy for the key OOH* intermediate, which favors the formation and desorption of OOH* on Zn sites for H2 O2 generation. Consequently, the Zn-N2 O2 -S SAC exhibits impressive electrochemical H2 O2 production performance with high selectivity of 96 %. Even at a high current density of 80 mA cm-2 in the flow cell, it shows a high H2 O2 production rate of 6.924 mol gcat -1  h-1 with an average Faradaic efficiency of 93.1 %, and excellent durability over 65 h.

Electrochemical Enhancement of Lithium-Ion Diffusion in Polypyrrole-Modified Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Nanotubes for Solid-to-Solid Free-Standing Lithium-Sulfur Cathodes

The energy density of lithium-sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (Li-SPAN) batteries has chronically suffered from low sulfur content. Although a free-standing electrode can significantly reduce noncapacity mass contribution, the slow bulk reaction kinetics still constrain the electrochemical performance. In this regard, a novel electrochemically active additive, polypyrrole (PPy), is introduced to construct PAN nanotubes as a sulfur carrier. This hollow channel greatly facilitates charge transport within the electrode and increases the sulfur content. Both electrochemical tests and simulations show that the SPANPPy-1% cathode possesses a larger lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and a more homogeneous phase interface than the SPAN cathode. Consequently, significantly improved capabilities and rate properties are achieved, as well as decent exportations under high-sulfur-loading or lean-electrolyte conditions. In-situ and semi-situ characterizations are further performed to demonstrate the nucleation growth of lithium sulfide and the evolution of the electrode surface structure. This type of electrochemically active additive provides a well-supported implementation of high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

Nanostructured Porous Polymer with Low Volume Expansion, Structural Distortion, and Gradual Activation for High and Durable Lithium Storage

Organic compounds exhibit great potential as sustainable, tailorable, and environmentally friendly electrode materials for rechargeable batteries. However, the intrinsic defects of organic electrodes, including solubility, low ionic conductivity, and restricted electroactivity sites, will inevitably decrease the cycling life and capacity. We herein designed and prepared nanostructured porous polymers (NPP) with a simple one-pot method to overcome the above defects. Theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that the as-synthesized NPP exhibited low volume expansion, molecular-structural distortion, and a gradual function activation process during cycling, thus exhibiting superior, high, and durable lithium storage. The gradual molecular distortion during the lithium storage processes provides more redox-active sites for Li storage, increasing the Li-storage capacity. Ex situ spectrum studies reveal the redox reaction mechanism of Li storage and demonstrate a gradual activation process during the repeated charging/discharging until the full storage of 18 Li ions is achieved. Additionally, a real-time observation on the NPP anode by in situ transmission electron microscope reveals a slight volume expansion during the repeating lithiation and delithiation processes, ensuring its structural integrity during cycling. This quantitative work for high-durability lithium storage could be of immediate benefit for designing organic electrode materials.

Stable Hexaazatrinaphthalene-Based Planar Polymer Cathode Material for Organic Lithium-Ion Batteries

Organic materials have garnered intensive focus as a new group of electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, many reported organic electrodes so far still exhibit unsatisfying cycling stability because of the dissolution in the electrolytes. Herein, a novel azo-linked hexaazatrianphthalene (HATN)-based polymer (AZO-HATN-AQ) is designed and fabricated by the polymerization of trinitrodiquinoxalino[2,3-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (HATNTN) and 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone (DAAQ). The abundant redox-active sites, extended π-conjugated planar conformation, and low energy gap endow the AZO-HATN-AQ electrode with high theoretical capacity, excellent solubility resistance, and fast Li-ion transport. In particular, the fully lithiated AZO-HATN-AQ still keeps the planar structure, contributing to the excellent cycling stability. As a result, AZO-HATN-AQ cathodes show high specific capacity (240 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1), prominent rate capability (98 mAh g-1 at 8 A g-1), and outstanding cycling stability (120 mAh g-1 after 2000 cycles at 4 A g-1 with 85.7% capacity retention) simultaneously. This study demonstrates that rational structure design of the polymer electrodes is an effective approach to achieving excellent comprehensive electrochemical performance.

Boosting the zinc storage of a small-molecule organic cathode by a desalinization strategy

Organic materials offer great potential as electrodes for batteries due to their high theoretical capacity, flexible structural design, and easily accessible materials. However, one significant drawback of organic electrode materials is their tendency to dissolve in the electrolyte. Resazurin sodium salt (RSS) has demonstrated remarkable charge/discharge performance characterized by a voltage plateau and high capacity when utilized as a cathode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Unfortunately, the solubility of RSS as a sodium salt continues to pose challenges in AZIBs. In this study, we introduce an RSS-containing organic compound, triresazurin-triazine (TRT), with a porous structure prepared by a desalinization method from the RSS and 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT). This process retained active groups (carbonyl and nitroxide radical) while generating a highly conjugated structure, which not only inhibits the dissolution in the electrolyte, but also improves the electrical conductivity, enabling TRT to have excellent electrochemical properties. When evaluated as a cathode for AZIBs, TRT exhibits a high reversible capacity of 180 mA h g-1, exceptional rate performance (78 mA h g-1 under 2 A g-1), and excellent cycling stability with 65 mA h g-1 at 500 mA g-1 after 1000 cycles.

Nitrogen-Rich Porous Organic Polymers from an Irreversible Amine-Epoxy Reaction for Pd Nanocatalyst Carrier

Nitrogen-rich porous organic polymers were fabricated through a nonreversible ring-opening reaction from polyamines and polyepoxides (PAEs). The epoxide groups reacted with both primary and secondary amines provided by the polyamines at different epoxide/amine ratios with polyethylene glycol as the solvent to form the porous materials. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the occurrence of ring opening between the polyamines and polyepoxides. The porous structure of the materials was confirmed through N₂ adsorption-desorption data and scanning electron microscopy images. The polymers were found to possess both crystalline and noncrystalline structures, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results. The HR-TEM images revealed a thin, sheet-like layered structure with ordered orientations, and the lattice fringe spacing measured from these images was consistent with the interlayer of the PAEs. Additionally, the selected area electron diffraction pattern indicated that the PAEs contained a hexagonal crystal structure. The Pd catalyst was fabricated in situ onto the PAEs support by the NaBH₄ reduction of the Au precursor, and the size of the nano-Pd was about 6.9 nm. The high nitrogen content of the polymer backbone combined with Pd noble nanometals resulted in excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol.
