Ion Tunnel Matrix Initiated Oriented Attachment for Highly Utilized Zn Anodes

Planar Deposition via In Situ Conversion Engineering for Dendrite-Free Zinc Batteries

Owing to the considerable capacity, high safety, and abundant zinc resources, zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been garnering much attention. Nonetheless, the unsatisfactory cyclic lifespan and poor reversibility originate from side reactions and dendrite obstacles to their practical applications. In addition to inhibiting the corrosion of aqueous electrolytes, regulating planar deposition is a key strategy to enhance their long-term stability. Herein, an in situ conversion strategy is reported to construct a protective "dual-layer" structure (VZSe/V@Zn) on zinc metal, consisting of the VSe2-ZnSe outer layer with low lattice mismatch to Zn (002) plane, and corrosion-resistant nanometallic V inner layer. Such design integrates superior interfacial ionic/electronic transfer, corrosion resistance, and unique planar deposition regulation capability. The as-prepared VZSe/V@Zn demonstrates remarkable durability of 238 h at 50 mA cm-2 with a high depth of discharge (68.3% DOD) in the Zn||Zn symmetric cell. Even in the anode-free system, the as-prepared protective layer can extend the cycle life up to 2000 cycles, with an outstanding capacity retention of 93.1% and ultra-high average coulombic efficiency of 99.998%. This work delineates an effective strategy for fabricating lattice-matching protective layers, with profound implications for elucidating zinc deposition mechanisms and paving the way for the development of high-performance zinc batteries.

ZnMn2(PO4)2·nH2O: An H2O-Imbedding-Activated Cathode for Robust Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Component modulation endows Mn-based electrodes with prominent energy storage properties due to their adjustable crystal structure characteristics. Herein, ZnMn2(PO4)2·nH2O (ZMP·nH2O) was obtained by a hydration reaction from ZnMn2(PO4)2 (ZMP) during an electrode-aging evolution. Benefiting from the introduction of lattice H2O molecules into the ZMP structure, the ion transmission path has been expanded along with the extended d-spacing, which will further facilitate the ZMP → ZMP·nH2O phase evolution and electrochemical reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bond can be generated between H2O and O in PO43-, which strengthens the structure stability of ZMP·nH2O and lowers the conversion barrier from ZMP to ZMP·4H2O during the Zn2+ uptake/removal process. Thereof, ZMP·nH2O delivers enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics with robust structure tolerance (106.52 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 over 620 cycles). This high-energy aqueous Zn||ZMP·nH2O battery provides a facile strategy for engineering and exploration of high-performance ZIBs to realize the practical application of Mn-based cathodes.

Mitigating Zn Dendrite Growth and Enhancing the Utilization of Zn Electrode in Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

In spite of extensive research and appreciable progress, in aqueous zinc-ion batteries, Zn metal anode is struggling with low Zn utility and poor cycling stability. In this study, a 3D "electrochemical welding" composite electrode is designed by introduction of ZnO/C nanofibers film to copper foils as an anode according to pre-electrodeposition active Zn (Zn@ZnO/C-Cu). The flow of Zn2+ through carbon fiber layer is regulated by zincophilic ZnO, promoting homogeneous diffusion of Zn2+ to Cu foil. In subsequent Zn deposition/stripping processes, the hydrophobicity of ZnO/C fiber layer reduces water at the interface of Zn@ZnO/C-Cu and results in uniform electric field significant suppressing growth of Zn dendritic and side reactions. Thus, pre-electrodeposition active Zn electrochemical welds ZnO/C nanofibers and Cu foil collectively provide stable charge/electron transfer and stripping/plating of Zn with low polarization and excellent cycling performance. The assembled symmetrical batteries exhibit stable cycling performance for over 470 h under 20% utilization of Zn at 5 mA cm-2, and an average coulombic efficiency of 99.9% at low negative/positive capacity ratio (N/P = 1) after 1000 cycles in the Zn@ZnO/C-Cu||Na2V6O16·1.5H2O full cell.

Surface Engineering on Zinc Anode for Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) are considered as a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their low cost, high safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the Zn anodes in AZMBs face severe challenges, such as dendrite growth, metal corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, all of which are closely related to the Zn/electrolyte interface. This article offers a short review on surface passivation to alleviate the issues on the Zn anodes. The composition and structure of the surface layers significantly influence their functions and then the performance of the Zn anodes. The recent progresses are introduced, according to the chemical components of the passivation layers on the Zn anodes. Moreover, the challenges and prospects of surface passivation in stabilizing Zn anodes are discussed, providing valuable guidance for the development of AZMBs.

Two-dimensional/three-dimensional hierarchical self-supporting potassium ammonium vanadate@MXene hybrid film for superior performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Currently, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have grown to be a good choice for large-scale energy storage systems due to their high theoretical specific capacity, low redox potential, low cost, and non-toxicity of the aqueous electrolyte. However, it is still challenging to obtain high specific capacity and stability suitable cathodes. Herein, hierarchical self-supporting potassium ammonium vanadate@MXene (KNVO@MXene) hybrid films were prepared by vacuum filtration method. Due to the three-dimensional nanoflower structure of KNVO with dual ions intercalation, high conductivity of two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene, and the hierarchical self-supporting structure, the AZIB based on the KNVO@MXene hybrid film cathode possessed superior specific capacity (481 mAh/g at 0.3 A/g) and cycling stability (retaining 125 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A/g). In addition, the storage mechanism was revealed by various ex-situ characterizations. Hence, a new viewpoint for the preparation of AZIB self-supporting cathode materials is presented.

Bidentate Coordination Structure Facilitates High-Voltage and High-Utilization Aqueous Zn-I2 Batteries

The aqueous zinc-iodine battery is a promising energy storage device, but the conventional two-electron reaction potential and energy density of the iodine cathode are far from meeting practical application requirements. Given that iodine is rich in redox reactions, activating the high-valence iodine cathode reaction has become a promising research direction for developing high-voltage zinc-iodine batteries. In this work, by designing a multifunctional electrolyte additive trimethylamine hydrochloride (TAH), a stable high-valence iodine cathode in four-electron-transfer I-/I2/I+ reactions with a high theoretical specific capacity is achieved through a unique amine group, Cl bidentate coordination structure of (TA)ICl. Characterization techniques such as synchrotron radiation, in situ Raman spectra, and DFT calculations are used to verify the mechanism of the stable bidentate structure. This electrolyte additive stabilizes the zinc anode by promoting the desolvation process and shielding mechanism, enabling the zinc anode to cycle steadily at a maximum areal capacity of 57 mAh cm-2 with 97 % zinc utilization rate. Finally, the four-electron-transfer aqueous Zn-I2 full cell achieves 5000 stable cycles at an N/P ratio of 2.5. The unique bidentate coordination structure contributes to the further development of high-valence and high capacity aqueous zinc-iodine batteries.

Lamellar Nanoporous Metal/Intermetallic Compound Heterostructure Regulating Dendrite-Free Zinc Electrodeposition for Wide-Temperature Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are attractive post-lithium battery technologies for grid-scale energy storage because of their inherent safety, low cost and high theoretical capacity. However, their practical implementation in wide-temperature surroundings persistently confronts irregular zinc electrodeposits and parasitic side reactions on metal anode, which leads to poor rechargeability, low Coulombic efficiency and short lifespan. Here, this work reports lamellar nanoporous Cu/Al2Cu heterostructure electrode as a promising anode host material to regulate high-efficiency and dendrite-free zinc electrodeposition and stripping for wide-temperatures aqueous zinc-ion batteries. In this unique electrode, the interconnective Cu/Al2Cu heterostructure ligaments not only facilitate fast electron transfer but work as highly zincophilic sites for zinc nucleation and deposition by virtue of local galvanic couples while the interpenetrative lamellar channels serving as mass transport pathways. As a result, it exhibits exceptional zinc plating/stripping behaviors in aqueous hybrid electrolyte of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether and zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate at wide temperatures ranging from 25 to -30 °C, with ultralow voltage polarizations at various current densities and ultralong lifespan of >4000 h. The outstanding electrochemical properties enlist full cell of zinc-ion batteries constructed with nanoporous Cu/Al2Cu and ZnxV2O5/C to maintain high capacity and excellent stability for >5000 cycles at 25 and -30 °C.

Design Strategies toward High-Utilization Zinc Anodes for Practical Zinc-Metal Batteries

Aqueous Zn-metal batteries (AZMBs) hold a promise as the next-generation energy storage devices due to their low cost and high specific energy. However, the actual energy density falls far below the requirements of commercial AZMBs due to the use of excessive Zn as anode and the associated issues including dendritic growth and side reactions. Reducing the N/P ratio (negative capacity/positive capacity) is an effective approach to achieve high energy density. A significant amount of research has been devoted to increasing the cathode loading and specific capacity or tuning the Zn anode utilization to achieve low N/P ratio batteries. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of comprehensive overview regarding how to enhance the utilization of the Zn anode to balance the cycle life and energy density of AZMBs. In this review, we summarize the challenges faced in achieving high-utilization Zn anodes and elaborate on the modifying strategies for the Zn anode to lower the N/P ratio. The current research status and future prospects for the practical application of high-performance AZMBs are proposed at the end of the review.

Overcoming Challenges: Extending Cycle Life of Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries at High Zinc Utilization through a Synergistic Strategy

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) face challenges in achieving high energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The lower operating voltage and excessive Zn metal as anode pose constraints on the overall energy storage capacity of these batteries. An effective approach is to reduce the thickness of the Zn metal anode and control its mass appropriately. However, under the condition of using a thin Zn anode, the performance of AZIBs is often unsatisfactory. Through experiments and computational simulations, the electrode structural change and the formation of dead Zn as the primary reasons for the failure of batteries under a high Zn utilization rate are identified. Based on this understanding, a universal synergistic strategy that combines Cu foil current collectors and electrolyte additives to maintain the structural and thermodynamic stability of the Zn anode under a high Zn utilization rate (ZUR) is proposed. Specifically, the Cu current collectors can ensure that the Zn anode structure remains intact based on the spontaneous filling effect, while the additives can suppress parasitic side reactions at the interface. Ultimately, the symmetric cell demonstrates a cycling duration of 900 h at a 70% ZU, confirming the effectiveness of this strategy.

Surface Patterning of Metal Zinc Electrode with an In-Region Zincophilic Interface for High-Rate and Long-Cycle-Life Zinc Metal Anode

The undesirable dendrite growth induced by non-planar zinc (Zn) deposition and low Coulombic efficiency resulting from severe side reactions have been long-standing challenges for metallic Zn anodes and substantially impede the practical application of rechargeable aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs). Herein, we present a strategy for achieving a high-rate and long-cycle-life Zn metal anode by patterning Zn foil surfaces and endowing a Zn-Indium (Zn-In) interface in the microchannels. The accumulation of electrons in the microchannel and the zincophilicity of the Zn-In interface promote preferential heteroepitaxial Zn deposition in the microchannel region and enhance the tolerance of the electrode at high current densities. Meanwhile, electron aggregation accelerates the dissolution of non-(002) plane Zn atoms on the array surface, thereby directing the subsequent homoepitaxial Zn deposition on the array surface. Consequently, the planar dendrite-free Zn deposition and long-term cycling stability are achieved (5,050 h at 10.0 mA cm-2 and 27,000 cycles at 20.0 mA cm-2). Furthermore, a Zn/I2 full cell assembled by pairing with such an anode can maintain good stability for 3,500 cycles at 5.0 C, demonstrating the application potential of the as-prepared ZnIn anode for high-performance aqueous ZMBs.

Trehalose in Trace Quantities as a Multifunctional Electrolyte Additive for Highly Reversible Zinc Metal Anodes

The unsatisfactory performance of Zn metal anodes significantly impedes the commercial application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, we introduce a trace amount of a multifunctional trehalose additive to enhance the stability and reversibility of Zn metal anodes. The trehalose additive exhibits a stronger Zn2+ ion affinity due to abundant lone-pair electrons, disrupting hydrogen bonds in H2O, regulating solvation structures, and tuning the Zn-electrolyte interface. Consequently, the Zn metal anode demonstrates a remarkable Coulombic efficiency of 99.80% and a cycle stability exceeding 4500 h at 1 mA cm-2. Even under stringent conditions of 10 mA cm-2, the Zn metal anode maintains a cumulative capacity of 2500 mA h cm-2 without a short circuit. Furthermore, Zn//Zn symmetric batteries exhibit excellent low-temperature cycle performance (over 400 h at -10 °C). As a proof of concept, assembled Zn//NH4V4O10 and Zn//MnO2 pouch cells demonstrate an improved electrochemical performance. This work presents an electrolyte additive strategy for achieving stable zinc anode operation in AZIBs.

Design Strategies for Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries with High Zinc Utilization: From Metal Anodes to Anode-Free Structures

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage due to the excellent safety, environmental friendliness, natural abundance, high theoretical specific capacity, and low redox potential of zinc (Zn) metal. However, several issues such as dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution, corrosion, and passivation of Zn metal anodes cause irreversible loss of the active materials. To solve these issues, researchers often use large amounts of excess Zn to ensure a continuous supply of active materials for Zn anodes. This leads to the ultralow utilization of Zn anodes and squanders the high energy density of AZMBs. Herein, the design strategies for AZMBs with high Zn utilization are discussed in depth, from utilizing thinner Zn foils to constructing anode-free structures with theoretical Zn utilization of 100%, which provides comprehensive guidelines for further research. Representative methods for calculating the depth of discharge of Zn anodes with different structures are first summarized. The reasonable modification strategies of Zn foil anodes, current collectors with pre-deposited Zn, and anode-free aqueous Zn metal batteries (AF-AZMBs) to improve Zn utilization are then detailed. In particular, the working mechanism of AF-AZMBs is systematically introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for constructing high-utilization Zn anodes are presented.

A Layered Bi2 Te3 @PPy Cathode for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries: Mechanism and Application in Printed Flexible Batteries

Low-cost, safe, and environmental-friendly rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising as next-generation energy storage devices for wearable electronics among other applications. However, sluggish ionic transport kinetics and the unstable electrode structure during ionic insertion/extraction hamper their deployment. Herein, a new cathode material based on a layered metal chalcogenide (LMC), bismuth telluride (Bi2 Te3 ), coated with polypyrrole (PPy) is proposed. Taking advantage of the PPy coating, the Bi2 Te3 @PPy composite presents strong ionic absorption affinity, high oxidation resistance, and high structural stability. The ZIBs based on Bi2 Te3 @PPy cathodes exhibit high capacities and ultra-long lifespans of over 5000 cycles. They also present outstanding stability even under bending. In addition, here the reaction mechanism is analyzed using in situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and computational tools and it is demonstrated that, in the aqueous system, Zn2+ is not inserted into the cathode as previously assumed. In contrast, proton charge storage dominates the process. Overall, this work not only shows the great potential of LMCs as ZIB cathode materials and the advantages of PPy coating, but also clarifies the charge/discharge mechanism in rechargeable ZIBs based on LMCs.

Guiding Zn Uniform Deposition with Polymer Additives for Long-lasting and Highly Utilized Zn Metal Anodes

The parasitic side reaction on Zn anode is the key issue which hinders the development of aqueous Zn-based energy storage systems on power-grid applications. Here, a polymer additive (PMCNA) engineered by copolymerizing 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA) was employed to regulate the Zn deposition environment for satisfying side reaction inhibition performance during long-term cycling with high Zn utilization. The PMCNA can preferentially adsorb on Zn metal surface to form a uniform protective layer for effective water molecule repelling and side reaction resistance. In addition, the PMCNA can guide Zn nucleation and deposition along 002 plane for further side reaction and dendrite suppression. Consequently, the PMCNA additive can enable the Zn//Zn battery with an ultrahigh depth of discharge (DOD) of 90.0 % for over 420 h, the Zn//active carbon (AC) capacitor with long cycling lifespan, and the Zn//PANI battery with Zn utilization of 51.3 % at low N/P ratio of 2.6.

Trade-off between Zincophilicity and Zincophobicity: Toward Stable Zn-Based Aqueous Batteries

Zn-based aqueous batteries (ZABs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage applications due to the merits of intrinsic safety and low cost. Nevertheless, the thorny issues of metallic Zn anodes, including dendrite growth and parasitic side reactions, have severely limited the application of ZABs. Despite the encouraging improvements for stabilizing Zn anodes through surface modification, electrolyte optimization, and structural design, fundamentally addressing the inherent thermodynamics and kinetics obstacles of Zn anodes remains crucial in realizing reliable ZABs with ultrahigh efficiency, capacity, and cyclability. The target of this perspective is to elucidate the prominent status of Zn metal anode electrochemistry first from the perspective of zincophilicity and zincophobicity. Recent progress in ZABs is critically appraised for addressing the key issues, with special emphasis on the trade-off between zincophilic and zincophobic electrochemistry. Challenges and prospects for further exploration of a reliable Zn anode are presented, which are expected to boost in-depth research and practical applications of advanced ZABs.
