Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance in Prussian Blue Analogues: Triple-Play of Metal Exsolution, Hollow Interiors, and Anionic Regulation

Insight into mechanism for remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Cu/Pr dual atom co-modified TiO2

The development of high-activity photocatalysts is crucial for the current large-scale development of photocatalytic hydrogen applications. Herein, we have developed a strategy to significantly enhance the hydrogen photocatalytic activity of Cu/Pr di-atom co-modified TiO2 architectures by selectively anchoring Cu single atoms on the oxygen vacancies of the TiO2 surface and replacing a trace of Ti atoms in the bulk with rare earth Pr atoms. Calculation results demonstrated that the synergistic effect between Cu single atoms and Pr atoms regulates the electronic structure of Cu/Pr-TiO2, thus promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and their directional migration to Cu single atoms for the photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, the d-band center of Cu/Pr-TiO2, which is located at -4.70 eV, optimizes the adsorption and desorption behavior of H*. Compared to TiO2, Pr-TiO2, and Cu/TiO2, Cu/Pr-TiO2 displays the best H* adsorption Gibbs free energy (-0.047 eV). Furthermore, experimental results confirmed that the photogenerated carrier lifetime of Cu/Pr-TiO2 is not only the longest (2.45 ns), but its hydrogen production rate (34.90 mmol g-1 h-1) also significantly surpasses those of Cu/TiO2 (13.39 mmol g-1 h-1) and Pr-TiO2 (0.89 mmol g-1 h-1). These findings open up a novel atomic perspective for the development of optimal hydrogen activity in dual-atom-modified TiO2 photocatalysts.

Optimizing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance by rationally constructing S-scheme heterojunction to modulate the D-band center

The research in the field of photocatalysis has progressed, with the development of heterojunctions being recognized as an effective method to improve carrier separation efficiency in light-induced processes. In this particular study, CuCo2S4 particles were attached to a new cubic CdS surface to create an S-scheme heterojunction, thus successfully addressing this issue. Specifically, owing to the higher conduction band and Fermi level of CuCo2S4 compared to CdS, they serve as the foundation and driving force for the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction. Through in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, the direction of charge transfer in the composite photocatalyst under light exposure was determined, confirming the charge transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction. By effectively constructing the S-scheme heterojunction, the d-band center of the composite photocatalyst was adjusted, reducing the energy needed for electron filling in the anti-bonding energy band, promoting the transfer of photogenerated carriers, and ultimately enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen production. performance. After optimization, the hydrogen evolution activity of the composite photocatalyst CdS-C/CuCo2S4-3 reached 5818.9 μmol g-1h-1, which is 2.6 times higher than that of cubic CdS (2272.3 μmol g-1h-1) and 327.4 times higher than that of CuCo2S4 (17.8 μmol g-1h-1), showcasing exceptional photocatalytic activity. Electron paramagnetic resonance and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have established a theoretical basis for designing and constructing S-scheme heterojunctions, offering a viable method for adjusting the D-band center to enhance the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Rapid Defect Engineering in FeCoNi/FeAl2O4 Hybrid for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis: A Pathway to High-Performance Electrocatalysts

Rational modulation of surface reconstruction in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) utilizing defect engineering to form efficient catalytic activity centers is a topical interest in the field of catalysis. The introduction of point defects has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to regulate the electronic configuration of electrocatalysts, but the influence of more complex planar defects (e.g., twins and stacking faults), on their intrinsic activity is still not fully understood. This study harnesses ultrasonic cavitation for rapid and controlled introduction of different types of defects in the FeCoNi/FeAl2O4 hybrid coating, optimizing OER catalytic activity. Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the different defects optimize the coordination environment and facilitate the activation of surface reconstruction into true catalytic activity centers at lower potentials. Moreover, it demonstrates exceptional durability, maintaining stable oxygen production at a high current density of 300 mA cm-2 for over 120 hours. This work not only presents a novel pathway for designing advanced electrocatalysts but also deepens our understanding of defect-engineered catalytic mechanisms, showcasing the potential for rapid and efficient enhancement of electrocatalytic performance.

Amorphous conversion in pyrolytic symmetric trinuclear nickel clusters trigger trifunctional electrocatalysts

The pursuit of multifunctional electrocatalysts holds significant importance due to their comprehension of material chemistry. Amorphous materials are particularly appealing, yet they pose challenges in terms of rational design due to their structural disorder and thermal instability. Herein, we propose a strategy that entails the tandem (low-temperature/250-350 °C) pyrolysis of molecular clusters, enabling preservation of the local short-range structures of the precursor Schiff base nickel (Ni3[2(C21H24N3Ni1.5O6)]). The temperature-dependent residuals demonstrate exceptional activity and stability for at least three distinct electrocatalytic processes, including the oxygen evolution reaction (η10 = 197 mV), urea oxidation reaction (η10 = 1.339 V), and methanol oxidation reaction (1358 mA cm-2 at 0.56 V). Three distinct nickel atom motifs are discovered for three efficient electrocatalytic reactions (Ni1 and Ni1' are preferred for UOR/MOR, while Ni2 is preferred for OER). Our discoveries pave the way for the potential development of multifunctional electrocatalysts through disordered engineering in molecular clusters under tandem pyrolysis.

Carbon-Based Composites for Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts: Design, Fabrication, and Application

The four-electron oxidation process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) highly influences the performance of many green energy storage and conversion devices due to its sluggish kinetics. The fabrication of cost-effective OER electrocatalysts via a facile and green method is, hence, highly desirable. This review summarizes and discusses the recent progress in creating carbon-based materials for alkaline OER. The contents mainly focus on the design, fabrication, and application of carbon-based materials for alkaline OER, including metal-free carbon materials, carbon-based supported composites, and carbon-based material core-shell hybrids. The work presents references and suggestions for the rational design of highly efficient carbon-based OER materials.

Recent progress in hierarchical nanostructures for Ni-based industrial-level OER catalysts

Exploring efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts reaching the industrial level current density is crucial for hydrogen production via water electrolysis. In this feature article, we summarize the recent progress in hierarchical nanostructures for the industrial-level OER. The contents mainly concern (i) the design of a hierarchical structure; (ii) a Ni-based hierarchical structure for the industrial current density OER; and (iii) the surface reconstruction of the hierarchical structure during the OER process. The work provides valuable guidance and insights for the manufacture of hierarchical nanomaterials and devices for industrial applications.

Cation-doped sea-urchin-like MnO2 for electrocatalytic overall water splitting

It is necessary to take full account of the activity, selectivity, dynamic performance, economic benefits, and environmental impact of the catalysts in the overall water splitting of electrocatalysis for the reasonable design of electrocatalysts. Designing nanostructures of catalysts and optimizing defect engineering are considered environmentally friendly and cost-effective electrocatalyst synthesis strategies. Herein, we report that metal cations regulate the microstructure of sea-urchin-like MnO2 and act as dopants to cause the lattice expansion of MnO2, resulting in crystal surface defects. The valence unsaturated Mn4+/Mn3+ greatly promotes the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The optimal Al-MnO2 showed that the overpotential is 390 and 170 mV in the process of catalyzing OER and HER, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. It is exciting to note that after 5000 cycles of Al-MnO2 within the kinetic potential range of OER and HER, its performance remained almost unchanged. This work provides a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly route for the design of efficient integrated water-splitting electrocatalysts.
