Abstract
Asymmetric hydrogenation finds widespread application in academia and industry. And indeed, a number of processes have been implemented for the production of pharma and agro intermediates as well as flavors & fragrances. Although these processes are all based on the use of late transition metals as catalysts, there is an increasing interest in the use of base metal catalysis in view of their lower cost and the expected different substrate scope. Catalysts based on cobalt have already shown their potential in enantioselective hydrogenation chemistry. This review outlines the impressive progress made in recent years on cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of different unsaturated substrates. We also illustrate the ligand dependent substrate specificity as well as the mechanistic variability in detail. This may well guide further catalyst development in this research area.

Abstract
Direct asymmetric reductive amination of bio-based levulinic acid (LA) to the enantioenriched 5-methylpyrrolidinone is achieved by using a readily available chiral Ru/bisphosphine catalyst with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96 % ee) and high isolated yield (up to 89 %). Methyl levulinate (ML), a byproduct from the industrial production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), can be used instead of LA with similar reactivity and selectivity. Mass spectrometry and isotope labelling studies indicate that the chiral lactam is formed via imine-enamine tautomerization/cyclization followed by asymmetric hydrogenation of the cyclic enamide.

Abstract
A convenient asymmetric reductive amination of benzylic ketones (α-arylated ketones) catalyzed by newly designed Cp*Ir complexes bearing a chiral N-(2-picolyl)sulfonamidato ligand was developed. Using readily available β-amino alcohols as chiral aminating agents, a range of benzo-fused and acyclic ketones were successfully reduced with formic acid in methanol at 40 °C to afford amines with favorable chemo- and diastereoselectivities. The amino alcohol-derived chiral auxiliary was easily removed by mild periodic oxidants, leading to optically active primary β-arylamines without erosion of the optical purity (up to 97% ee). The excellent catalytic performance was retained even upon lowering the amount of catalyst to a substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratio of 20,000, and the amination could be performed on a large scale exceeding 100 g. The precise hydride transfer to iminium species generated from the ketonic substrate and the chiral amine counterpart was suggested by the mechanistic studies on stoichiometric reactions of isolable hydridoiridium complexes and model intermediates such as N,O-acetal, enamine, and iminium compounds.

Abstract
Chiral amines are key structural motifs present in a wide variety of natural products, drugs, and other biologically active compounds. During the past decade, significant advances have been made with respect to the enantioselective synthesis of chiral amines, many of them based on catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation (AH). The present review covers the use of AH in the synthesis of chiral amines bearing a stereogenic center either in the α, β, or γ position with respect to the nitrogen atom, reported from 2010 to 2020. Therefore, we provide an overview of the recent advances in the AH of imines, enamides, enamines, allyl amines, and N-heteroaromatic compounds.

Abstract
In the early 1990s chiral P-thiother ligands emerged as promising ligands in the field of asymmetric catalysis, with the development of many P-thioether ligand families. However, only a few of them have shown a broad reaction and substrate scope. So, compared with other heterodonor ligands such as the widely studied P-N ligands, their impact in asymmetric catalysis was not realised until recently. This has been mainly attributed to the difficulty of controlling the configuration at the sulfur atom when coordinated to the metal. More recently, it has been found that this problem could be solved by a rigorous choice of the ligand scaffold, a process usually aided by mechanistic studies. This allowed the recent discovery of new P-thioether ligand families with a broader versatility, both in reactions and in substrate/reagent scope. This feature article aims to highlight those new P-thioether ligand libraries and the relationship between the structure and catalytic performance.

Abstract
A concise synthesis of (16S,20S)-3β-hydroxy-5α-pregnane-20,16-carbolactam from tigogenin via the corresponding lactone is described. The most efficient synthetic route consisted of the lactone ring-opening with aminoalane reagent followed by PDC or Dess-Martin oxidation. The oxo-amide obtained was subjected to cyclization with Et3SiH/TFA or Et3SiH/Bi(TfO)3. Alternately, the lactone was converted first to the oxo-acid, which was then subjected to the microwave-assisted reductive amination. N-Alkyl derivatives were also obtained in a similar way.

Abstract
Among chiral phosphines, P-stereogenic phosphines provide unparalleled activity and selectivity and have thus emerged as "state-of-the-art" ligands for asymmetric hydrogenation and other industrially relevant processes. However, the synthesis of this type of ligand implies lengthy multistep sequences, which are a hurdle for many laboratories. There is a lack of methods for the rapid construction of P-stereogenic phosphine ligands. In this respect, P-stereogenic synthons that can be rapidly incorporated into a given ligand scaffold are highly desirable. Over the last 10 years, our group has unveiled that P-stereogenic aminophosphines can be rapidly assembled in a convenient fashion from the corresponding primary aminophosphine and/or the corresponding phosphinous acid.Using cis-1-amino-2-indanol as chiral auxiliary, we devised a multigram synthesis of tert-butylmethylaminophosphine borane and tert-butylmethylphosphinous acid borane, which are key intermediate synthons. Primary aminophosphine works as nucleophilic intermediates at nitrogen. From this synthon, aminodiphosphine (MaxPHOS) and secondary imino phosphoranes (SIP) ligands were synthesized. These ligands exhibit a tautomeric equilibrium between the PH and NH forms, and because of that, they do not undergo oxidation in air. NH/PH tautomerism does not jeopardize their configurational stability, and most importantly, in the presence of a metal source, the equilibrium is shifted toward the NH form, thus allowing coordination through phosphorus. Rh-MaxPHOS and Rh-SIP complexes have been used in asymmetric hydrogenation and [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with outstanding results. On the other hand, P-stereogenic phosphinous acid, upon activation, serves as an electrophilic reagent with amine nucleophiles, allowing SN2 reactions at phosphorus with complete inversion of configuration. This coupling technology exhibits a great potential because it allows the incorporation of the P*-phosphine fragment in numerous ligand structures, provided there is an amino group with which to react. In a mild and efficient process, phosphinous acid has been coupled to hydrazine to yield C2 diphosphines and to chiral benzoimidazole-amines to yield P-stereogenic benzoimidazole-phosphine ligands. The most powerful ligand system, however, arises from the condensation of three independent fragments: our phosphinous acid borane, an amino acid, and an amino alcohol, which yields a library of phosphino-oxazoline ligands named MaxPHOX. The corresponding Ir-MaxPHOX catalyst library was applied with excellent results in the asymmetric hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated esters, 2-aryl allyl phthalimides, unfunctionalized tetrasubstituted alkenes, cyclic enamides, and N-aryl and N-methyl imines. It also has found application in asymmetric isomerization of alkenes.Overall, we developed key P-stereogenic building blocks that can be incorporated stereospecifically to ligand scaffolds and demonstrated that integration of the P*-aminophosphine fragment in a given catalytic system provides structural diversity that can be a critical contribution to obtaining optimal results and selectivity.

Abstract
The MaxPHOX-Ir catalyst system provided the highest selectivity ever reported for the reduction of cyclic enamides derived from α- and β-tetralones. This result indicates that iridium catalysts are also proficient in reducing alkenes bearing metal-coordinating groups. In the present system, selectivity was pressure-dependent: In most cases, a decrease in the H2 pressure to 3 bar resulted in an increase in enantioselectivity. Moreover, the process can be carried out in environmentally friendly solvents, such as methanol and ethyl acetate, with no loss of selectivity.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of enamides and enamines is one of the most important methods for the preparation of optically active amines. This review describes the recent developments of highly efficient catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of enamides, and enamines. It specifically focuses on the substrates because hydrogenation of enamides and enamines is highly dependent on the substrates although the chiral metal catalysts play a significant role.
