Abstract
A strategy for convenient and precise oxidative aminotrifluoromethylation of 1,4-naphthoquinone with the Togni reagent and amines has been demonstrated via a radical process. This method allows efficient access for the preparation of a wide range of CF3-functionalized 1,4-naphthoquinones under mild conditions, and its application in late-stage modification of drug molecules is achieved. Mechanistic studies indicate that 1,4-naphthoquinone serves as both a substrate and a catalyst and that the Togni reagent plays a dual role of a substrate and an oxidant. As a result, the title reaction can take place in the dark without external catalysts and oxidants.

Abstract
Backbone-enabled site-selective modification of peptides with benzoquinone via Pd-catalyzed δ-C(sp2)-H functionalization has been achieved. The amide groups of peptides serve as internal directional groups, facilitating C-H functionalization through a kinetically less favored six-membered palladacycle. This methodology presents novel opportunities for the late-stage site-selective diversification of peptides.

Abstract
A two-step gram-scale synthesis of cynandione A is described. The key to success is the one-pot tandem oxidation/regioselective arylation of 1,4-hydroquinone in the presence of an excess amount of oxidant. Natural bond orbital charge analysis was performed in order to understand the regioselectivity of the arylation step. The highly practical and scalable synthesis developed herein is expected to assist the in-depth biological evaluation of cynandione A in various animal models.

Abstract
The divergent dehydrogenative coupling reactions of tryptamines with the catalysis of nontoxic FeIII salts in the presence of DDQ as the co-oxidant have been developed. Remarkably, the transformations feature a rapid and regioselective assembly of diverse 2,8'- and N1,8'-bis(indolyl) methane derivatives from readily-available starting materials by simply changing the FeIII salt and reaction temperature. Besides, the fast reaction rate, mild reaction conditions, low catalyst cost and easy operations make this methodology quite useful. The synthetic utility was further demonstrated in the biomimetic synthesis of 6,6'-bis-(debromo)-gelliusine F.

Abstract
An atom-economical approach for the synthesis of arylquinones was achieved successfully via direct oxidative C-C dehydrogenative coupling reaction of quinones/hydroquinones with electron-rich arenes using an inexpensive Fe-I2-(NH4)2S2O8 system. The efficiency of this catalytic approach was established with a broad scope of substrates involving quinones and hydroquinones to give high yields (60-89%) of several arylated quinones. The present protocol is simple, practical, and shows good functional group tolerance.

Addition of Vindoline to p-Benzoquinone: Regiochemistry, Stereochemistry and Symmetry Considerations. Molecules 2021; 26:molecules26216395. Abstract
Vindoline and catharanthine are the major alkaloids of Catharanthus roseus and are extracted in large quantities to prepare the pharmaceutically important Vinca type alkaloids vincaleukoblastine, vincristine and navelbine. The higher yield of vindoline relative to catharanthine makes it an attractive substrate for developing new chemistry and adding value to the plant. In this context, we have reacted vindoline with a selection of electrophiles among which benzoquinone. Conditions were developed to optimize the synthesis of a mono-adduct, of five bis-adducts, and of tri-adducts and tetra-adducts, several of these adducts being mixtures of conformational isomers. Copper(II) was added to the reactions to promote reoxidation of the intermediate hydroquinones and simplify the reaction products. The structures were solved by spectroscopic means and by symmetry considerations. Among the bis-isomers, the 2,3-diadduct consists of three unseparable species, two major ones with an axis of symmetry, thus giving a single set of signals and existing as two different species with indistinguishable NMR spectra. The third and minor isomer has no symmetry and therefore exhibits nonequivalence in the signals of the two vindoline moieties. These isomers are designated as syn (minor) and anti (major) and there exists a high energy barrier between them making their interconversion difficult. DFT calculations on simplified model compounds demonstrate that the syn-anti interconversion is not possible at room temperature on the NMR chemical shift time scale. These molecules are not rigid and calculations showed a back-and-forth conrotatory motion of the two vindolines. This “windshield wiper” effect is responsible for the observation of exchange correlations in the NOESY spectra. The same phenomenon is observed with the higher molecular weight adducts, which are also mixtures of rotational isomers. The same lack of rotations between syn and anti isomers is responsible for the formation of four tri-adducts and of seven tetra-adducts. On a biological standpoint, the mono adduct displayed anti-inflammatory properties at the 5 μM level while the di-adducts and tri-adducts showed moderate cytotoxicity against Au565, and HeLa cancer cell lines.

Abstract
The 2,6'-bijuglone natural product diospyrin and its unnatural 3,6'-isomer idospyrin have been synthesized in seven steps each from N,N-diethylsenecioamide in overall yields of 12% and 13%, respectively. The syntheses diverge from ramentaceone (7-methyljuglone) and include a key Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. Diospyrin, idospyrin, and several synthetic precursors exhibit potent and selective cytotoxicity to the murine myeloma NS-1 cell line over neonatal foreskin cells.

Abstract
An atom-economical and environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of indole-substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones from indoles and 1,4-naphthoquinones using readily available Lewis acidic B(C6F5)3 in water and with the recycling of water and part of the catalyst is reported. The reaction proceeded through the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed C(sp2)-H and C(sp2)-H bond coupling of 1,4-naphthoquinones with the C-3 position of indole derivatives in water. This methodology provides a facile protocol for the synthesis of some new indole-substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones in satisfactory yields and with a broad substrate scope. When compared to known methods for the synthesis of indole-substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones, this protocol is practical and efficient and does not require a transition-metal catalyst or toxic organic solvents. In addition, we utilized a simple filtration process for complete recycling of the solvent and the part of the catalyst in each reaction cycle.

Abstract
An In(OTf)3-catalyzed domino reaction involving sequential oxidative ring opening of aziridines by using the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide and intramolecular Michael addition has been developed for the modular synthesis of 2-aminoindanone compounds by the formation of one new C═O bond and one new C-C bond. The notable feature of this strategy includes broad substrate scope, excellent trans-diastereoselectivities, highly functionalized products, and mild conditions. The catalyst In(OTf)3 plays an important role in the formation of the indanone ring.

Abstract
Traditional organic synthesis relies heavily on organic solvents for a multitude of tasks, including dissolving the components and facilitating chemical reactions, because many reagents and reactive species are incompatible or immiscible with water. Given that they are used in vast quantities as compared to reactants, solvents have been the focus of environmental concerns. Along with reducing the environmental impact of organic synthesis, the use of water as a reaction medium also benefits chemical processes by simplifying operations, allowing mild reaction conditions, and sometimes delivering unforeseen reactivities and selectivities. After the "watershed" in organic synthesis revealed the importance of water, the development of water-compatible catalysts has flourished, triggering a quantum leap in water-centered organic synthesis. Given that organic compounds are typically practically insoluble in water, simple extractive workup can readily separate a water-soluble homogeneous catalyst as an aqueous solution from a product that is soluble in organic solvents. In contrast, the use of heterogeneous catalysts facilitates catalyst recycling by allowing simple centrifugation and filtration methods to be used. This Review addresses advances over the past decade in catalytic reactions using water as a reaction medium.

Abstract
Highly substituted p-benzoquinones were obtained in yields ranging from 39% to 98% by laccase-catalyzed domino reactions between hydroquinones and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls using aerial oxygen as the oxidant. In almost all reactions bis-adducts with two adjacent 1,3-dicarbonyl substituents on the quinone moiety were formed selectively. The transformations can be regarded as domino oxidation/1,4-addition/oxidation/1,4-addition/oxidation processes. With unsubstituted hydroquinone as the substrate 2,3-disubstituted p-benzoquinones were isolated. Bis-adducts were also formed exclusively upon reaction with monosubstituted hydroquinones. In almost all cases the 2,3,5-trisubstituted p-benzoquinones were obtained. When 2,3-disubstituted hydroquinones were employed as starting materials the 2,3,5,6-tetrasubstituted p-benzoquinones were isolated. The unambiguous structure elucidation of all products has been achieved by NMR spectroscopic methods including spin pattern analysis of the long-range coupled C═O carbons and (13)C satellites analysis in (1)H NMR spectra.

Abstract
BACE1 activity, inhibition of Aβ aggregation, and disaggregation of preformed Aβ fibrils constitute the three major targets in the development of small-molecule lipophilic new drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Quinones are widely distributed among natural products and possess relevant and varied biological activities including antitumor and antibiotic, inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, antidiabetic, or COX-inhibition, among others. We report herein the interaction of several arylquinones and their derivatives with the amyloidogenic pathway of the amyloid precursor protein processing. Our studies put forward that these compounds are promising candidates in the development of new drugs which are effective simultaneously towards the three major targets of AD.

Abstract
Reactions of heteroaromatic compounds with 3-methyl substituted 2-quinonyl boronic acids proceeded by 1,4-addition followed by spontaneous protodeboronation, leading directly to the Friedel-Crafts alkylation products instead of the commonly observed alkenylation derivatives resulting from quinones. The boronic acid acts as a temporary regiocontroller, making the system a highly reactive quinone equivalent and opening a direct access to 5,5-disubstituted cyclohexene-1,4-diones.

Abstract
Pd(II)-catalyzed Fujiwara-Moritani reactions can be carried out without external acid at room temperature and in water as the only medium. A highly active cationic Pd(II) catalyst, [Pd(MeCN)(4)](BF(4))(2), easily activates aromatic C-H bonds to produce electron-rich cinnamates in good yields.
