Abstract
New Cu(I) catalysts are effective in enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of a variety of indoles with different β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters. A control study shows that such a catalyst system is less sensitive to air, and the reactions can be carried out without special cares such as glovebox operation or moisture/oxygen-free conditions. Preliminary computation results suggest that there exists π-π stacking between the substrate and the catalyst, and such an interaction seems to play a role in stabilizing the reaction intermediate and enhancing the stereoselectivity of the reactions. The desired products can be obtained in up to 98% yield at 99% enantiomeric excess. The same high enantioselectivity can be observed when the reaction is carried in a gram scale, indicating a good scalability of the catalyst system in enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of different indoles with β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters.

Abstract
We would like to describe an efficient and highly enantioselective Mukaiyama-Michael reaction of silyl ketene acetals with β,γ-unsaturated α-keto esters catalyzed by a chiral magnesium BINOL-derived phosphate. The resulting functionalized 1,5-dicarbonyl adducts are obtained in high yields (up to 96%) and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98%) under mild conditions. Two plausible mechanistic pathways were proposed, including a 1,4-addition and a hetero Diels-Alder [4 + 2] cycloaddition.

Abstract
N-Triflylphosphoramides (NTPA), have become increasingly popular catalysts in the development of enantioselective transformations as they are stronger Brønsted acids than the corresponding phosphoric acids (PA). Their highly acidic, asymmetric active site can activate difficult, unreactive substrates. In this review, we present an account of asymmetric transformations using this type of catalyst that have been reported in the past ten years and we classify these reactions using the enantio-determining step as the key criterion. This compendium of NTPA-catalysed reactions is organised into the following categories: (1) cycloadditions, (2) electrocyclisations, polyene and related cyclisations, (3) addition reactions to imines, (4) electrophilic aromatic substitutions, (5) addition reactions to carbocations, (6) aldol and related reactions, (7) addition reactions to double bonds, and (8) rearrangements and desymmetrisations. We highlight the use of NTPA in total synthesis and suggest mnemonics which account for their enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Iron-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective organic transformations with generality and broad substrate scope have profound applications in modern synthetic chemistry; an example is herein described based on cis-FeII complexes having metal- and ligand-centered chirality. The cis-β FeII(N4) complex [FeII(L)(OTf)2] (L = N,N′-bis(2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta-[b]quinoline-5-yl)-N,N′-dimethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine) is an effective chiral catalyst for highly regio- and enantioselective alkylation of N-heteroaromatics with α,β-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles, including asymmetric N1, C2, C3 alkylations of a broad range of indoles (34 examples) and alkylation of pyrroles and anilines (14 examples), all with high product yields (up to 98%), high enantioselectivity (up to >99% ee) and high regioselectivity. DFT calculations revealed that the “chiral-at-metal” cis-β configuration of the iron complex and a secondary π–π interaction are responsible for the high enantioselectivity. A cis-β FeII complex having metal- and ligand-centered chirality catalyzes highly regio- and enantioselective alkylation of indoles (at the N1, C2, or C3 position), pyrroles and anilines with α,β-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles (48 examples, up to 99% ee).![]()

Abstract
The electrophilic substitution reaction of 4,7-dihydroindole with aryl-aldehydes as an electrophilic partner followed by an oxidation step to deliver 2,2'-bis(indolyl)arylmethanes was studied for the first time. The reaction afforded regioselectivity at the 2,2'-positions of indole in an operationally simple and inexpensive procedure with a variety of substrates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first set of examples of 2,2'-bis(indolyl)arylmethanes obtained in a substituent-free manner. A facile method from dipyrromethanes to the corresponding 2-benzylindoles was also reported. In addition, 2,2'-bis(indolyl)arylmethanes were converted to 5,7-dihydroindolo[2,3-b]carbazoles.

Abstract
A catalyst-controlled chemoselective formal 1,2-addition of 3-indolylmethanols with cyclic enaminones has been established in the presence of TfOH as a strong acid, which afforded C2-functionalized indole derivatives in generally good yields (up to 89% yield). This reaction not only confronted the great challenge in 1,2-addition of 3-indolylmethanols but also provided a good strategy for C2-functionalization of indole derivatives. The investigation on the reaction mechanism revealed that this formal 1,2-addition included a tandem sequence of 1,4-addition/[1,3]-C migration/isomerization, in which the [1,3]-C migration of the 1,4-addition product was a key step and the acidity of the catalyst played a decisive role in the observed chemoselectivity.

Abstract
A catalytic asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of an aryl vinyl ketone with 1,3-dienylcarbamate has been developed. Cyclohexenes bearing vicinal amino and aroyl groups in a cis-configuration were prepared in excellent ee (>99%) and endo (single diastereomer) selectivity. The absolute configuration of one DA product was unambiguously confirmed using XRD analysis. The transition state structure was proposed on the basis of DFT calculations.

Abstract
Brønsted acid catalyzed (3(+) + 2) cycloadditions between hydrazones and alkenes provide a general approach to pyrazolidines. The acidity of the Brønsted acid is crucial for the catalytic efficiency: the less acidic phosphoric acids are ineffective, while highly acidic chiral N-triflylphosphoramides are very efficient and can promote highly enantioselective cycloadditions. The mechanism and origins of catalytic efficiencies and selectivities of these reactions have been explored with density functional theory (M06-2X) calculations. Protonation of hydrazones by N-triflylphosphoramide produces hydrazonium-phosphoramide anion complexes. These ion-pair complexes are very reactive in (3(+) + 2) cycloadditions with alkenes, producing pyrazolidine products. Alternative 1,3-dipolar (3 + 2) cycloadditions with the analogous azomethine imines are much less favorable due to the endergonic isomerization of hydrazone to azomethine imine. With N-triflylphosphoramide catalyst, only a small distortion of the ion-pair complex is required to achieve its geometry in the (3(+) + 2) cycloaddition transition state. In contrast, the weak phosphoric acid does not protonate the hydrazone, and only a hydrogen-bonded complex is formed. Larger distortion energy is required for the hydrogen-bonded complex to achieve the "ion-pair" geometry in the cycloaddition transition state, and a significant barrier is found. On the basis of this mechanism, we have explained the origins of enantioselectivities when a chiral N-triflylphosphoramide catalyst is employed. We also report the experimental studies that extend the substrate scope of alkenes to ethyl vinyl ethers and thioethers.

Abstract
An enantioselective aza-Michael addition of indolines to α,β-unsaturated ketones was achieved using a bifunctional cinchona alkaloid-derived chiral squaramide derivative. Various β-indolinyl ketone derivatives were obtained in good to excellent yields and with high enantioselectivity. DDQ or MnO2 oxidation of indoline derivatives provided convenient access to various enantioenriched N-substituted indole derivatives.
