Abstract
We have developed a catalytic asymmetric Nazarov cyclization that results in the formation of two contiguous all-carbon quaternary stereocenters in high yield with excellent levels of asymmetric induction. This method requires no catalyst recognition elements in the starting materials that are simple diketoesters. Geometrically pure E or Z isomers of the starting material lead to diastereomerically pure products with high enantioselectivity because the species that undergoes cyclization is a rhodium enolate that is configurationally stable.

Abstract
Despite the persistent presence of medium-sized (seven- to nine-membered) scaffolds in natural products and biologically active molecules, their asymmetric syntheses have always been considered a formidable task; therefore, they have remained underdeveloped when compared to the enantioselective synthesis of five- and six-membered ring scaffolds. One important class of such medium-sized ring frameworks includes seven- to nine-membered biaryl bridged carbo- and heterocycles. These medium-ring-sized biaryl frameworks possess more configurational stability than the related smaller ring structures and are common features of valuable natural products, bioactive compounds, chiral catalysts, and molecular motors. Due to these exciting properties and broad applications, over the last few years, the catalytic enantioselective synthesis of medium-sized bridged biaryls has seen an upsurge. This highlight article describes the development of organocatalysed and transition-metal catalysed transformations for procuring seven-, eight-, and nine-membered bridged biaryls bearing a chiral axis/one or more asymmetric carbon centres.

Abstract
The asymmetric synthesis of cyclopentachromenones from gold‐catalyzed reaction of readily available skipped alkenynones is described. This cascade reaction involves an initial anti‐Michael hydroarylation of the ynone moiety to form a gold‐functionalized dialkenylketone intermediate, followed by a Nazarov cyclization that proceeds in an unprecedented enantioselective manner. Excellent enantiomeric ratios and chemical yields are obtained under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
N-Triflylphosphoramides (NTPA), have become increasingly popular catalysts in the development of enantioselective transformations as they are stronger Brønsted acids than the corresponding phosphoric acids (PA). Their highly acidic, asymmetric active site can activate difficult, unreactive substrates. In this review, we present an account of asymmetric transformations using this type of catalyst that have been reported in the past ten years and we classify these reactions using the enantio-determining step as the key criterion. This compendium of NTPA-catalysed reactions is organised into the following categories: (1) cycloadditions, (2) electrocyclisations, polyene and related cyclisations, (3) addition reactions to imines, (4) electrophilic aromatic substitutions, (5) addition reactions to carbocations, (6) aldol and related reactions, (7) addition reactions to double bonds, and (8) rearrangements and desymmetrisations. We highlight the use of NTPA in total synthesis and suggest mnemonics which account for their enantioselectivity.

Abstract
The Nazarov electrocyclization reaction is a convenient, widely used method for construction of cyclopentenones. In the past few decades, catalytic asymmetric versions of the reaction have been extensively studied, but the strategies used to control the position of the double bond limit the substituent pattern of the products and thus the synthetic applications of the reaction. Herein, we report highly enantioselective silicon-directed Nazarov reactions which were cooperatively catalyzed by a Lewis acid and a chiral Brønsted acid. The chiral cyclopentenones we synthesized using this method generally cannot be obtained by means of other catalytic enantioselective reactions, including previously reported methods for enantioselective Nazarov cyclization. The silicon group in the dienone substrate stabilized the β-carbocation of the intermediate, thereby determining the position of the double bond in the product. Mechanistic studies suggested that the combination of Lewis and Brønsted acids synergistically activated the dienone substrate and that the enantioselectivity of the reaction originated from a chiral Brønsted acid promoted proton transfer reaction of the enol intermediate.

The first example of catalytic enantioselective tautomerization of structurally labile but isolable enamines for accessing their chiral imine-tautomers is described. Kinetically stable enamine-based dibenzo[b,d]azepines were tautomerized by a simple chiral BINOL-phosphoric acid, providing a variety of seven-membered imine products bearing both central and axial stereogenic elements in good yields (up to 96%) with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivities (up to 97% ee, >20:1 dr).

Abstract
Enantioselective control of the chirality of a tertiary α-carbon in the products of a Nazarov cyclization of enones is challenging because the reaction involves an enantioselective proton transfer process. We herein report the use of cooperative catalysis using Lewis acids and chiral Brønsted acids to control the stereochemistry of the tertiary α-carbon in the products of this reaction. Specifically, with ZnCl2 and a chiral spiro phosphoric acid as catalysts, we realized the first enantioselective construction of cyclopenta[b]indoles with chiral tertiary α-carbons via Nazarov cyclization of indole enone substrates with only one coordinating site. Mechanistic studies revealed that the chiral spiro phosphoric acid acts as a multifunctional catalyst: it co-catalyzes the cyclization of the dienone and enantioselectively catalyzes a proton transfer reaction of the enol intermediate. This new strategy of enantioselective control by means of cooperative catalysis may show utility for other challenging asymmetric cyclization reactions.

Abstract
Nucleophilic catalysts for a 1,6 addition/Nazarov cyclization/elimination sequence were evaluated for their ability to induce enantioselectivity in the electrocyclization step. Of the tertiary amines examined, it was found that a cinchona alkaloid derivative was able to generate substituted 5-hydroxy γ-methylene cyclopentenones with excellent enantioselectivity. The study results suggest that successful cyclization depends upon the ability of the dienyl diketone substrate to readily adopt an s-cis conformation.

Abstract
The first asymmetric metal-catalyzed Nazarov cyclization of N-heterocycles has been developed. The use of a chiral catalyst allows the enantioselective electrocyclization of N-heterocycles under mild conditions and the corresponding products are obtained in good yields with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity. The reaction mechanism and the absolute configuration of the obtained products are explained by means of computational studies.

Abstract
A catalytic asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of an aryl vinyl ketone with 1,3-dienylcarbamate has been developed. Cyclohexenes bearing vicinal amino and aroyl groups in a cis-configuration were prepared in excellent ee (>99%) and endo (single diastereomer) selectivity. The absolute configuration of one DA product was unambiguously confirmed using XRD analysis. The transition state structure was proposed on the basis of DFT calculations.

Abstract
Brønsted acid catalyzed (3(+) + 2) cycloadditions between hydrazones and alkenes provide a general approach to pyrazolidines. The acidity of the Brønsted acid is crucial for the catalytic efficiency: the less acidic phosphoric acids are ineffective, while highly acidic chiral N-triflylphosphoramides are very efficient and can promote highly enantioselective cycloadditions. The mechanism and origins of catalytic efficiencies and selectivities of these reactions have been explored with density functional theory (M06-2X) calculations. Protonation of hydrazones by N-triflylphosphoramide produces hydrazonium-phosphoramide anion complexes. These ion-pair complexes are very reactive in (3(+) + 2) cycloadditions with alkenes, producing pyrazolidine products. Alternative 1,3-dipolar (3 + 2) cycloadditions with the analogous azomethine imines are much less favorable due to the endergonic isomerization of hydrazone to azomethine imine. With N-triflylphosphoramide catalyst, only a small distortion of the ion-pair complex is required to achieve its geometry in the (3(+) + 2) cycloaddition transition state. In contrast, the weak phosphoric acid does not protonate the hydrazone, and only a hydrogen-bonded complex is formed. Larger distortion energy is required for the hydrogen-bonded complex to achieve the "ion-pair" geometry in the cycloaddition transition state, and a significant barrier is found. On the basis of this mechanism, we have explained the origins of enantioselectivities when a chiral N-triflylphosphoramide catalyst is employed. We also report the experimental studies that extend the substrate scope of alkenes to ethyl vinyl ethers and thioethers.
